292 English Skills Book - 5 Lesson 8 Good morning, students! Today we are going to talk about a beautiful palace in Palpa. Have you ever heard of the Rani Mahal? The Rani Mahal means the Queen’s Palace. It lies on the bank of the Kali Gandaki River. The white building with red roof constructed in European style has three storeys and stands with tall blue columns. You might wonder who might have built this beautiful palace. Well, it was built by Khadga Shamsher Rana. Khadka Shamsher was a brother of Bir Shamsher Rana. You know Nepal had a family rule of the Ranas as the Prime Ministers for 104 years. Khadga Shamsher actually helped his brother Shamsher to be the Prime Minister after killing his uncle Ranodip Singh in 1885. Two years later, in 1887, Khadga tried to remove his brother Bir Shamsher to become Prime Minister himself. But he failed to do so. Thus, his brother sent him to Gulmi. The following year, in 1888, he was sent to Palpa, where he lived with his wife Tej Kumari. In 1892, his wife Tej died. He was sad. To make his wife immortal he started to build a palace on the bank of the Kali Gandaki River in 1893. It took four years to complete the construction of the building. After the construction of the building, he named it Rani Mahal. He also named the nearby forest Rani Ban and the cremation ghat, the Rani Ghat. After a few years in 1902, Khadga Shamsher left the palace and went to India. It is one of the famous tourist destinations now. It has been turned into a museum by the government. Lesson 9 Hello everyone, today we’re going to learn about an amazing animal that lives in the cold and snowy mountains of Central Asia - the snow leopard. First of all, let’s talk about the snow leopard’s size. These big cats are typically around 4 to 5 feet long, with a tail that can be up to 3 feet long. They weigh anywhere from 60 to 120 pounds. The snow leopard’s fur is a beautiful grayish-white colour, which helps it blend in with the snowy mountains where it lives. This fur also keeps them warm in the cold temperatures. Now, let’s talk about the snow leopard’s diet. These big cats are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They mostly hunt for mountain goats, sheep, and ibex, but they will also eat smaller animals like marmots and hares. The snow leopard’s habitat is in the high mountains of Central Asia, such as the Himalayas, the Karakoram, and the Hindu Kush. They prefer to live in rocky and snowy terrains, where they can hide and hunt.
English Skills Book - 5 293 Finally, let’s talk about some of the snow leopard’s peculiar habits. One of the most interesting things about these cats is that they are very good climbers. They can climb up steep cliffs and rocky terrains with ease. They are also very good at jumping, and can jump up to 50 feet in a single bound! In conclusion, the snow leopard is a fascinating animal that lives in the cold and snowy mountains of Central Asia. It is known for its beautiful grayish-white colour, its diet of mountain goats and sheep, and its ability to climb steep cliffs and jump long distances. However, it’s an endangered species, and we should take care of them and preserve them for future generations. Lesson 12 Once upon a time, there was a wise and noble King who ruled a prosperous kingdom. This King took great care in governing his people and always sought to do what was right. One day, a group of citizens came to the King’s court and asked for his assistance. They explained that they wanted to expand their fields to harvest a larger crop, but they needed permission from the King to do so. The King thought for a moment and then asked why they wanted to expand their fields. The citizens replied that due to the increased population in their area, the current amount of land was not enough to sustain them. The King was deeply moved by the citizens’ plight, so he agreed to let them expand their fields. He also declared that anyone who wished to do the same must come before him and give him good reasons for doing so. This way, the King could ensure that the land was used responsibly. The King’s order was met with approval from his people, who were thankful for his wise decision. The King’s rule endured for many years, and the citizens of the kingdom never forgot the wise King’s insistence on giving good reasons for their actions. Playing music is such a great way to express yourself and share your passion with others. Lesson 16 All should not be vegetarians Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen. We are debating the resolution, All should be vegetarians. I am a member of the negative team and I strongly disagree with it. Before I keep my points here let me answer my opponents. They oddly brought the issues of health, and animal rights here. Their first reason was health. They said that it is not healthy to eat meat because it is high in fat and difficult to digest. We have two responses. First, it is not true that meat is difficult to digest. Our bodies are made to digest both meat and vegetables. Second, it is not always true that meat is higher in fat than vegetables. Some vegetables, such as avocados have a lot of fat and some kinds of meat, such as turkey, have very little fat. Their second reason was animal rights. They said that animals have a right not to suffer. We have two responses. First, it is not true that animals have rights. Rights come from our country’s constitution, and our constitution says nothing about animals. Second, animal rights are not as important as human rights. If we stop raising animals and stop fishing, millions of people in the food industry would lose their jobs. Now let me put forth my points. I have three points to support my ideas: health, economy, and taste. Scientists have proved that meat has a lot of protein. Protein helps us to build our bodies. So eating meat is healthy. Moreover, fish have iodine which is necessary for us to be healthy. My second point is the economy. Meat production is a big business. Millions of people are working in this field. If everyone stops eating meat, millions of people will lose their job. Thus, we must be eating meat. Our last point is taste. Meat tastes good. Meat is an important part of our culture. For example, our Dashain loses its charm if there is no meat. Therefore, I beg your attention to our arguments based on evidence that we all do not need to be vegetarians. Thank you!
