Sky Gazing Have you ever stared at the clouds and tried to see pictures in them? Well, this is very similar to how ancient astronomers named the constellations. Constellations are groups of stars, and today there are 88 officially recognised constellations. Each is named for a figure or object that astronomers saw when they viewed the star group. Most of the constellations are named after characters in mythology. Hercules,

English Skills Book - 5 159 Draco, Orion, and The Great Bear are just a few. Others are named after the signs of the zodiac, like Sagittarius, Capricorn, and Scorpio. But the way they were named is very similar. Just like we look at clouds today and see figures and other objects, astronomers looked at the stars and saw things. But if you’ve ever played this cloud gazing game with your friends, you’ve probably noticed that different people see different things in the clouds. You may see a bear, while your best friend sees a lion in the very same cloud. This was also the case with naming the constellations. And as a result, the same constellation can be known by different names across the globe. One of the best-known constellations is the Big Dipper. If you’ve ever seen it in the sky, then you know it looks like a scoop or a dipper. But the ancient Greeks called the ‘Big Dipper’ Ursa Major or ‘Big Bear’ and Hindus called it ‘Saptarishi’. The ancient Irish and French called the ‘Big Dipper’ the ‘Chariot’ and the British referred to it as the ‘Plough”. Another example is ‘Orion’. The Orion is named after a hunter. The ancient Greeks saw it like a hunter ready to shoot an arrow. However, Hindus saw it like a deer and named it the Mrigashiras. So you can see how star gazing and studying

160 English Skills Book - 5 the constellations to find shapes in the pattern can cause a single constellation to have multiple names. Another thing that contributes to these differing names is the expansion of the universe. The stars are moving and changing positions in the sky, which can make them look less like what they were originally named and more like something completely different. The constellation Cassiopeia originally looked like a W, but today it appears to be a squiggly line. Astronomers believe that the Big Dipper will look like number five in fifty thousand years. Imagine what you will see the next time you look at the stars. Comprehension 21 Answer the following questions. a. How many officially recognised constellations are there? b. What are the constellations named after? c. What are the zodiac signs? d. Why do different people see different things in the clouds? e. How does the expansion of the universe affect the appearance of constellations? Cite an example. f. Why is the Saptarishi referred to as Ursa Major by ancient Greeks and the Big Dipper by the British? g. Where does the part of moon go after full moon night for some days? c. How do you think calendars are made? d. Do you think the Moon can be used to calculate dates? Do you know any example of the Moon being used to calculate dates and time? 9 Read and learn. The Phases of the Moon Can you see the calendar here? Each box has at least three different pieces of information? What do you think they are? You might have observed, Dashain, the greatest festival of the Hindus, falls on different dates each year. Similarly, the date of Eid, another great festival, falls on different dates in our school calendar. The dates of Lhosar also do not match exactly each year. However, the festivals like New Year and Martyrs’ Day in our calendar are fixed. Why do you think this happens? Well, it is all because we follow different calendars. Our school calendar is based on the movement of the Earth and the Sun. As our school calendar calculates the relations of the Sun, it is called a solar

168 English Skills Book - 5 calendar. Our festivals like Dashain, Eid, and Lhosar are calculated based on the Moon. To understand it better, we need to study the Moon and its phases. As we know, the Moon itself doesn’t emit any light like the Sun does. What we see when we see the Moon is sunlight reflected off the Moon. The phase of the Moon is how much of the Moon appears to us on the Earth to be lit up by the Sun. Half of the Moon is always lit up by the Sun, except during an eclipse, but we only see a portion that’s lit up. This is the phase of the Moon. Around once per month, every 29.53 days to be exact, the phases of the Moon make a complete cycle. As the Moon circles the Earth, we can only see a portion of its lit-up side. When we can see 100% of the lit-up side, this is the Full Moon. When we can’t see any of the lit-up side, this is called the Dark Moon or New Moon. What are the different phases of the Moon?

English Skills Book - 5 169 As the Moon orbits or circles the Earth, the phase changes. We’ll start with what is called the New Moon phase. This is where we can’t see any of the lit-up side of the Moon. The Moon is between us and the Sun (see the picture). As the Moon orbits the Earth we can see more and more of the lit-up side until finally the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun and we get a full moon. As the Moon continues to orbit the Earth we now see less and less of the lit-up side. The New Moon and Dark Moon are pretty much the same phase happening at almost the same time. Waxing or Waning? As the New Moon begins its orbit and we see more and more of the Moon, this is called Waxing. After the Moon gets to its full phase, we start to see less and less of the Moon. This is called Waning. Lunar Calendar A lunar calendar is one based on the orbit of the Moon. A lunar month (29.53 days) is slightly shorter than an average standard month (30.44 days). If you only had 12 lunar months then you would end up around 12 days short of a year. As a result, very few modern societies use a lunar calendar or month. However, many ancient societies measure their time in lunar months or “moons”. Eclipse A lunar eclipse is when the Earth is exactly between the Moon and the Sun so none of the Sun’s rays can hit the Moon. A solar eclipse is when the Moon exactly blocks the Sun’s rays from hitting the Earth. A lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere on the dark side of the Earth. A solar eclipse can only be seen from certain places on the Earth as the Moon only blocks the Sun for a small area. Solar Eclipses always happen during the New Moon phase.

English Skills Book - 5 195 My dad often went to mountains. He worked as a mountain guide. After a long break, last summer my dad wanted to go to the mountain again. This time he was taking nobody but our family only: my mother, my brother and me. We wanted to go to the Annapurna Base Camp, which is popular as ABC. We started our journey from Pokhara early morning. After five hours of walk, we reached a small village. We stayed in a tea house and we had a great time. Reading 6 Read and learn.

196 English Skills Book - 5 The second day began with tea at the tea house. Then, we followed a narrow path through a meadow. There were lots of flowers and there were goats with bells around their necks. The bells tinkled when the goats moved. After that, the path went through a forest. It was shady and quiet. I remembered of Red Riding Hood but I didn’t see any wolf. After the forest, the path climbed steeply towards the mountain peaks. It led us between huge rocks and then, the walk became a real adventure. We walked into a deep, narrow ravine or river valley. We could hear the river splashing over the rocks at the bottom. While we were walking we heard a distant roar. Gradually, it got louder. We walked round a massive boulder and there was the most amazing sight. Water was falling straight down the mountain and crashing onto the rocks below us. The sound was incredible. A waterfall really does roar. It sounded like an angry beast. We couldn’t hear each other at all. Dad signaled to us and we followed him. The path led us behind the waterfall. It was amazing. On the left of the path was the mountainside and on the right was falling water. I thought it was fantastic but it was a bit scary, too. It was quite dark and very noisy. The path came out from behind the waterfall but round the corner, it stopped at the edge of a high cliff. There was a short wooden bridge with rope at the sides and it was swinging in the breeze. It looked terrifying but Dad knew it was safe. Anyway, it was the only way to cross the river. The bridge swung even more when we walked on it. We walked slowly. My brother and I thought it was fun but it was not the case for Mum. Dad had to help her. She is afraid of high places. She walked with her eyes closed and dad holding her!
