Foreword
Why is literature important? Why should educators, parents and com-
munity members help students develop love and passion for reading?
Giving children access to all genres of literature is extremely important
for a number of reasons. It not only helps in developing cognitive skills
but also exposes children to the wisdom of the ages. It gives students
appreciation about their own cultural heritage as well as those of others.
It fosters emotional intelligence and creativity. It nurtures growth and
development of the student’s personality and social skills. It makes the
students think about, analyse, appreciate, learn from and respond to
various underlying themes and messages of literature.
Wonder is a truly wonderful literature course, with texts gleaned from a
variety of genres and supplemented with engaging activities. As the stu-
dents begin reading the texts, they can no more afford to remain passive
readers. They are constantly questioned and asked to respond. Quality
literature does not tell the reader everything he or she needs to know.
Rather, it allows for some difference in opinion. One reader may take
something completely different away from a piece of literature than the
next reader, based on the two personal viewpoints and experiences. Stu-
dents learn to evaluate and analyse literature, and in the process, they
develop as independent thinkers who can form and express opinions
with clarity.
Through this series, we have attempted to foster the culture of reading.
Well-read children of today will certainly go on to build a more cohesive
society tomorrow.
We would be delighted to receive your feedback. We pledge to assist all
those involved in the teaching and learning of this series. Do use the
resource materials that are provided free and also feel free to contact us.

A Stormy Day
It was a summer day. The day was windy and rainy. Mrs. Tharu
looked out. It was just thundering. She called her children. "You
mustn't go out. It is going to rain. Come in!" she shouted.
Flash and boom! There was thunder and lightening. They heard
a loud noise.
They sat by the fire. 'Knock, knock!, Knock, knock!' There was a
sound at the door.
Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur English Book - 2 17
What could it be?
Was it the wind? Was it an animal? The children came near to
their mother.
Mrs. Tharu opened the door. There was a small baby boy at
her doorstep. “Are you hurt?” Mrs. Tharu asked.
“No, aunty,” said
the boy. “The wind
blew very hard. I
could not go to my
home. My parents
are out of home too.”
“I’m so sorry,” said
Mrs. Tharu. “You
should come inside
with us. We’ll have
warm tea and bread.
After the storm, we
will look for your
parents.”
The baby went in.
Mr. Tharu went
to him and asked,
'What's your name?"
"I am Aman, Aman
Rai," the boy said.
"You look so small. How old are you?" asked Mrs. Tharu.
The baby said, "I'm seven years old."

"Where do you live?" asked Mrs Tharu.
"Down the lane. Some ten houses far from here. We came here
recently." said the boy.
"What do your parents do?" asked Mrs. Tharu.
"My mother is a tailor," said the boy. "My father works in a bank."
The storm ended. There was calm outside. Rain also stopped.
There there came another knock on the door.
Who do you think is knocking on the door? Is it the baby’s
parents?
Mrs. Tharu opened the door. There were worried couple at the
door. Mrs. Tharu looked at them with questioning eyes.
"Is our child in here?" asked the man.
Aman heard his papa speaking. He came out and said, "Hello
aunti, he is my father. This is my mother." Aman caught his
mother.
Mr. and Mrs. Rai were very happy. Their baby was safe and
warm. “Thank you for helping our baby, good neighbour!” said
Mrs. Rai.
Mr. Rai said, “We will be good friends now.”
“It is nice to have good friends,” said Mrs. Tharu.
