Lazy Jack
Once upon a time, there lived a boy. His name was Jack. He lived
with his mother. They were very poor. His mother worked hard to
earn a living. But Jack did nothing. He was very lazy. So everyone
called him Lazy Jack.
One day, his mother became very angry with him. She said, “If you
don’t start to work, I will throw you out of the house.”
So, the next day, Jack went out looking for a job. He worked at a farm
for whole day. The farmer gave him some money for his work. But
when he was returning home, he lost it.
“You stupid boy,”
said his mother,
“you should have
put it in your
pocket.”
“I will do that
another time,”
said Jack.
The next day, he
went out again.
That day, he
worked for a cow-
keeper. The cow-
keeper gave him a
jar of milk for his day’s work.

Jack took the jar and put it into the large pocket of his jacket. The
milk spilt before he reached home. “Dear me!" said his mother, "you
should have carried it on your head."
"I’ll do that another time," replied Jack.
This time, Jack went to work for an old farmer. The old farmer gave
him a cream cheese for his work. In the evening, Jack took the cheese.
How will Jack carry the cheese to his home?
He carried it on his head and went home. By the time he got home,
the cheese was all spoilt.

When he got home, his mother said to him, "You silly fellow, you
should have tied it with a string and dragged it along after you."
"I’ll do that another time," said Jack.
Do you think Jack will go back to work again?
Another day, Jack found a job at the butcher’s. The butcher gave him
a great big piece of meat. Jack took the meat and tied it to a string.
Then he dragged it along after him in the dirt. When he reached
home, the meat was completely spoilt. His mother became very much
angry at him.
"You idiot," said she to her son, "you should have carried it on your
shoulder."
"I’ll do that another time,"
replied Jack.
The next morning, he
went out once again. He
went to work for a cattle-
keeper. Jack had been
working for a week. But
he had brought nothing
useful. So he was tired of
working. That day, he did
not work properly. So, the
cattle-keeper gave him an
old donkey.

laughed in her life. So the man was very worried. The doctors had
said that if she laughs, she will be able to speak.
The girl was looking out of the window. Just then, she saw Jack
carrying a donkey on his shoulder. He looked so funny that she
began to laugh. She recovered from her sickness. She began to speak.

Literature
Fairy tales are stories that people have told again and again.
Most fairy tales are very old. No one knows who told them first.
Fairy tales tell us about kings and queens. The stories often have
fairies or magic animals.
Many fairy tales usually begin with “Once upon a time.” This
tells that the story took place long ago in a place that is not real.
Many fairy tales end with “They lived happily ever after.” This
means that the people in the story do not have problems anymore.
They are happy and the story is over.
Which of the above features do you find in the story of Lazy Jack.

God, Moon God, Fire God, Water God, and many other gods. The
angels brought fruits and juice for the gods. The gods were talking
to each other. Just then, someone came to the palace.
He was Indra’s teacher, Vrihaspati. All the gods stood up. It is the

He went back to his palace.

People started celebrating Gai Jatra from the time of King Pratap
Malla. There is an interesting story behind the festival. Do you
know the story?
Many years ago, Nepal had a lot of small kingdoms. There were
many kings in Nepal. At that time, there was a Malla king in
Kathmandu. His name was King Pratap Malla.
What do you think the King did to make the Queen happy?
Discuss with the class.
The king’s son had
died. This made the
queen very sad. She
stopped laughing.
She always cried. The
king wanted to make
her happy again.
So the king ordered
his people to take
out a parade. The
king also ordered
them to make it look
funny. But there was
a condition. Only the
family who had lost someone that year could take out the parade.
Many people took out the parade from their houses. They had
lost someone they loved.

Some brought out a decorated cow. Some brought out children
ressed as a cow. People also made them look funny. The queen
saw the parade. There were many people. Everyone had a cow
or a child dressed as a cow.
Queen did not feel alone anymore. She knew other people had
also lost their loved ones. She stopped crying.
The children looked very funny. So, the queen started to laugh.
This made the king very happy. From that day, Gai Jatra is
celebrated every year.
On Gai Jatra, people also do a special stick dance. This dance is
called ‘Ghintang Ghisi’. It is celebrated like a street festival.
But Gai Jatra is only celebrated in the Kathmandu valley. People
in other parts of Nepal do not celebrate it. And they do not get a
holiday.
