Manasvi Lingam Hope of our future Educational Background I was born in Hyderabad, and was educated at a nearby small school all the way from kindergarten until my 10th grade. I studied Engineering Physics at IITBombay, and graduated in May 2009. During my undergrad, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a couple of months in SISSA (Trieste, Italy) thanks to a summer undergraduate research fellowship sponsored by the Italian government. I left India for the US in August 2010, where I pursued my doctoral degree (PhD) in Physics at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in May 2015. My dissertation was at the interface of plasma physics and applied mathematics; I was attracted to plasma physics because of its potential to revolutionize our access to clean energy via nuclear fusion, as well as by its mathematical elegance and sophistication. I was subsequently a postdoctoral scholar at Princeton University (2015-16), where I worked on the application of plasma physics to nuclear fusion and astrophysics. Next, I moved to Harvard University (2016-17), where I was a postdoctoral fellow studying biological physics and fluid mechanics in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Finally, I held a postdoctoral fellowship in the Institute for Theory and Computation at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (2017-19), where I researched astrobiology and planetary science. Since August 2019, I am based at the Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) as an Assistant Professor of Astrobiology in the Department of Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science, and the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. In addition, I am a Research Fellow in the Department of Physics and the Institute of Fusion Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. What is the field I work on? I primarily work in astrobiology, one of the newest and fastest growing disciplines in science, although I also conduct interdisciplinary research in astrophysics, plasma physics, and aerospace engineering in parallel. In a nutshell, astrobiology seeks to answer three fundamental questions in the Universe: 1. Where did we come from? How did life originate and evolve on planet Earth? 2. Are we alone? Is there life on other worlds in the Cosmos? 3. Where are we going? What is the future of humankind? The chief appeal of astrobiology is the pursuit of science for science's sake. This is because the field strives to understand and contextualize humanity's place in the grand scheme of things: how the Universe came to be, how life on Earth was initiated, how life evolved and eventually gave rise to sentient conscious beings (humans), and how the future of life on our planet (including humans) will play out. In addition to its intrinsic appeal of answering the above Big Questions, astrobiology offers us a number of tangible benefits. For example, discovering First Indian Professor of Astrobiology 23e ‘êHê düuÛÑ\ C≤„|üø£ dü+∫ø£ 143

organisms that survive in extreme conditions (one of the areas within astrobiology) has the potential to revolutionize fields like biotechnology and molecular biology. Likewise, responsible space exploration could grant us sustainable access to certain non-renewable resources (e.g., rare Earth elements) that are becoming scarce on Earth. My specific research Astrobiology is a vast and multidisciplinary field, which suits my own diverse background in engineering, physics, astronomy, planetary science, and applied mathematics. A select few of the major research areas in astrobiology that I have worked on thus far are sketched below: 1. Developing sophisticated fluid models (using NASA supercomputing facilities) to understand how planetary atmospheres, a requirement for habitability, could get rapidly eroded by high-speed winds emitted by the star. 2. Seeking to understand whether there exist universal physical principles underlying biological phenomena. For instance, I am particularly interested in resolving whether photosynthesis could operate on planets around other stars, what properties it may exhibit, and how it might be detected via telescopes. 3. Studying novel propulsion systems such as light sails and electric sails that do not carry on-board fuel. These spacecraft would enable us to explore the Solar system and beyond not only at lower costs but also much faster (e.g., Pluto can be reached in just a couple of years). 4. Identifying and searching for novel signatures of intelligent life (called technosignatures) like the presence of industrial pollutants in planetary atmospheres. This group of researchers, to which I belong, were awarded the first NASA funded research on technosignatures in the 21st century. In addition, I have carried out research on geothermal energy and sustainability; the evolution of humans from primates; plasma instabilities that affect our capacity to realize nuclear fusion; and gravitational interactions of supermassive black holes. Achievements and future plans I am not only the first Telugu person to be appointed as a professor of this subject (i.e., astrobiology) in the world, but also the first Indian. I have published nearly 100 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, and wrote the first and only graduate-level textbook in astrobiology published by Harvard University Press, Life in the Cosmos From Biosignatures to Technosigna-tures, which is nearly 1100 pages in length. In addition, I am currently working on two books that will be published by Cambridge University Press in the coming year(s). For my collective achievements, I was elected to be a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS) in 2022, which is a prestigious learned society establi-shed more than two centuries ago (in 1820) in the UK. In addition, I received the Dean's Excellence Fellowship in 2011 (University of Texas) and the ITC postdoctoral fellowship in 2017 (HarvardSmithsonian Center for Astrophysics). Last, but not least, I enjoy teaching at multiple levels, ranging from the introductory undergraduate to advanced graduate levels, because it fulfills the vital duty of transmitting knowledge to the next generation of scientists and engineers. In several of my courses, I received a perfect score of 5.0/5.0 in my teaching evaluations. In the academic year 2021-22, I was ranked among the top 5 faculty by average teaching score in the entire College of Engineering and Science at Florida Tech. In the future, I intend to pursue astrobiology further, simultaneously interfacing with related fields like physics, astronomy, and aerospace engineering. Some of the questions that I hope to grapple with include: 1. What is life from the perspective of information theory? How was the origin and evolution of life shaped by information processing and information flow? 2. How can we utilize mathematical models to predict the future of humankind, given the manifold challenges it is facing (e.g., climate change)? Equipped with this knowledge, how could we mitigate these risks? 3. How can multiple facets of space exploration (e.g., navigation) be optimized by utilizing rapid advancements in artificial intelligence such as deep learning and reinforcement learning? Apoorva Charan Hope of our future Oscar nominated Joyland Movie Producer You come from a different background, diagrammatically opposite to American culture. Most Indian kids in the US are inclined toward the computer field or medicine; what motivated you to choose films? I'd like to interrogate this question and ask who is defining American culture. Culture, no matter where we are it associating with, is constantly evolving. South Asia has such a strong filmmaking and cinema-going culture, and even beyond filmmaking, storytelling is passed down to us from generations above. It feels like the most natural instinct to be drawn towards filmmaking. I guess what perhaps feels a little different is that I was really encouraged to find what I love doing and to sculpt that into a career path. I'm grateful that I was guided towards a passion-driven profession. We spend so much time working and with our colleagues that our work often becomes interchangeable with our purpose. It feels really nice to have your passion, purpose, and profession align. It is challenging for anyone to get into Hollywood. Apart from your interest in the movie field, why did you choose to be a producer? Why not other areas like script writing or direction or something else? I was drawn towards producing because of the balance between creativity and business. I like the process of finding new voices to elevate, finding new stories to tell. I love working with writers & breaking story - I love the collaborative process but screen writing in itself can be isolating. Directing is a calling and it isn't for me, right now. I'm pretty happy with my role as a producer where I can manage and shepherd multiple films and projects. Tell us about the picture Joyland, your team, accolades around the world and the obstacles if any in this journey. Joyland is about a married man from a lower middle class family in Lahore who gets a job at a mujra theater, falls in love with a trans dancer, and the effect of that relationship on his wife & the rest of his family. It's an Urdu and Punjabi language film that brought together cinephile & arthouse cinema audiences, the LGBTQIA+ community, and South Asians from across the world. It takes a village to make a film and we had a wonderful team. Some of the core members of the team were Saim Sadiq, the writer & director, our producing partners Sarmad Khoosat & Lauren Mann, our magnetic cast Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq, Alina Khan, Sarwat Gilani, Sania Saeed, Salmaan Peerzada, and Sohail Sameer. We were lucky to have a team that was so passionate about the film. Our journey for sharing the film with the audience started at Cannes 2022. Joyland was the first film from Pakistan to ever play at Cannes in Official Competition and won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize & the Queer Palm. The film then went on to win many awards around the world including the Independent Spirit 23e ‘êHê düuÛÑ\ C≤„|üø£ dü+∫ø£ 145

Award for Best International Film, Sutherland Award's Honorable Mention at London Film Festival, Best Film From the Subcontinent at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, a Special Jury Prize for the Best Ensemble at Bangkok World Film Festival, and Bets Actor for Ali Junejo at the Palm Springs International FIlm Festival. Joyland also played at Toronto International Film Festival, AFI Fest, Sundance, and New Directors New Films. Joyland is also the first film from Pakistan to be shortlisted for the Oscars. The role of a producer in the Indian film industry is not fully visible except in funding the film. When you compare Hollywood with Indian Film Industry, what is the role of a producer? Why the producer plays a vital role in filmmaking, especially in Hollywood? For me, the role of a producer is to help the film find the right resources so it can be born into the world. Resources can be in the form of talent (finding the right creative partners, writers, directors, cinematographers, production designers, etc.), financial, and even emotional. I really enjoy being the writer/director's creative partner, from doing deep development on the story, to helping build out the team & our vision for the film. The script your team has chosen is an unconventional one with a mainly - religiously traditional background? What are the obstacles you faced during film production and releasing it in other countries? I don't think our film is about religion at all. It deals with patriarchy, which stems from culture, regardless of which religion you are referring to. Our director, Saim Sadiq, speaks about this extensively in his interviews. And the film is about a traditional, conservative family in Lahore so I'm always amused when people tell me it's unconventional. Perhaps what is unconventional is the honesty with with we showcase the everyday struggles of patriarchy that women, men, and the trans community face. We had a very strong producing partner in Sarmad Sultan Khoosat who made production very smooth for us. We have had great theatrical releases in France and the US. We did have a ban temporarily in Pakistan but the cast & crew organized a grassroots campaign and Joyland became the first film to have a ban removed and went on to be in theaters in Karachi and Islamabad for over three months. Getting an entry into the Oscars is not an easy proposition; What are your obstacles or experiences getting to that stage? Financing and the systemic challenges that make it hard to reach the voter base. An Academy campaign is often about the marketing spend and the muscle of the folks behind it. As an independently financed film, we had to be really scrappy and strategic in the race to getting our film in front of the right voting audience. There is only a certain community of voters that are eligible to vote for the category we were competing in. What are your next projects in the years to come? Any plans to produce a film in Bollywood or Tollywood? We have some exciting films in development set in different countries. I will always be open to Bollywood, Tollywood, and any other way in which we tend to define a film industry or a genre of films. I hope to allow good scripts and good stories to lead me to my work. Roni Akurati Hope of our future Film Actor & Standup Comedy Artist Roni Akurati is an American actor of Indian descent. His parents, Rajani and Ramesh Akurati, are immigrants from India, and both he and his older brother Ramhith were born in Chicago. When he was the age of five, his parents saw he had a flare for dancing and performing and encouraged him to pursue entertainment opportunities. His earliest performance experiences included doing Bollywood songs for the local Indian community in the Chicago area. Roni’s first few professional jobs were in theater, playing the Indian Changeling Boy in, “A Midsummer Night's Dream,” and Tiny Tim in, “A Christmas Carol.” Soon thereafter, he landed the lead role of Mowgli in a Disney production of “The Jungle Book” at the prestigious Goodman Theater in Chicago and the Huntington Theatre in Boston. “At about the age of nine, Roni’s acting career turned towards film and television with roles in NBC’s ‘Animal Practice’ and Nickelodeon’s ‘Dead time Stories’ and ‘Henry the Danger.’ He also made appearances in several television/online series for Yahoo and Amazon, and most recently starred opposite Ben Stiller on ‘Another Period,’ which Stiller also produces. “With regard to casting for GROWING UP SMITH, Roni was in India when he received the call to audition for the movie. While auditioning for the filmmakers via Skype, unfortunately the power kept going in and out at the hotel he was staying at. What was meant to be a quick interview dragged on for a few sessions over several days. Ultimately, the producers flew him to Los Angeles for a screen test opposite Brighton Sharbino ('Amy') who had already been cast and he finally got the job.“He is currently at University of chicago, IL majoring in economics and film studies.
