Static skills
The skills of exercise which we practice without changing our
position are known as static skills. These skills help in warming
up before starting a game. In this, we learn different skills to
move our hand, head, body, shoulder and hip. You can perform
these exercises as individual or in a group. You have to do this
exercise in presence of your teacher or instructor.
Activity 1: Body bending
This exercise involves
the bending of a body
in front, backside and
sideways. You need
to follow the following
steps.
Step 1: Stand at ease with your hand side wise along the body.
Step 2: Bend your body at hip and try to touch toes in the front
with hands.
Step 3: Come back to step 1 position.
Step 4: Put your hand at your hip.
Step 5: Bend your body back with your chest up and head down.
Do not move from your place.
Step 6: Come back to the position in step 4.
Step 7: Bend your body sideways. First towards the left and
come back to the position in step 6.
Step 8: Bend your body sideways right and again come back to
the position in step 1.
You can repeat this process three times.

Do not
bend your
knees. Move your hip left and then front and rotate it
clockwise.
Step 3: Come back to the position in step 1.
Step 4: Rotate your hip from right side anti-clockwise three
times.
Step 5: Come back to step 1 position.
Quick Test 1: Doing activities

Activities 3: Flap the legs (Butterfly)
It is fun to flap legs. Students love doing
this. You need to follow these steps.

commander. The function of the commander is to command the
team to perform activities together.
Here we will practice some basic commands like Attention,
Stand at ease, Rest and Cover up etc.
Attention
In this command, student should stand keeping
the body straight. Their hands should be
sideways along the body. You must keep your
legs together. Both heels should touch each
other and toes should be at the opening of
approximately 45 degree (forty five degree).
Stand at ease
When this command is given, you should
move your right leg and land approximately
one foot away from your left. Remember
you are not supposed to move your left leg.
Further, you should move your both hands behind and lock them
up. You need to grip your right hand with the left hand. You have

Instruction to teacher
Make students aligned in different lines in a group. Show them what they should do
in each command. Now students are commanded to perform “Attention,” “stand
at ease” and “Rest”. The task can be repeated unless students do it together.
Cover up
Players should be in lines. There should
be same number of players in each line.
Players to be in “attention” position initially.
When the command “front cover up” is
given, all the players should move their
hand straight forward above the chest up to the shoulder of the
front player. But they should not touch the front players. Players
can move back to adjust the position.
When “front cover up” is accurate, players are commanded to

of their neighbouring friends. They can adjust the position to
make comfortable gap.

with small metal ring.

Simple games are easy to play, and they do not need more apparatus
and rules. These games can be played both indoor and outdoor.
Some games look similar; but they have different rules to play in
different localities. Such games reflect the culture and creativity of
the locality. These types of games are known as local games.
Local games are many, and they differ from society to society.
Both the local games and simple games help students to
increase team spirit, leadership quality and co-operation. Games
also teach disciplined work habit, ability to think and tackle
instantly. Hence game is useful to kids for overall development
both mentally and physically.
Some simple games which students at this age can play are
chase in chain, capture the thief and pair chasing. Here, let’s
read how we can play these games.
Game 1: Chase in chain
All the players should come to the
ground. They do some warm-up
exercises like bending of body,
hip rotation and skipping for
5 minutes. Players must be
scattered within the boundary of the play area. Amongst them
two players are chosen to make chain. Now the players, in chain
start chasing others. As they touch any other they along with
the newly touched player make chain of three players, and they
again start chasing the untouched players.
As the game proceeds, number of members in the chain
increases. The last one who remains untouched will be the
winner. Remember you should not cross the boundary while
running, otherwise you will be disqualified.
216 MY WAY
Science, Health and Physical Education - 3
Game 2 : Capture the thief
To play this game, players are divided into two groups with equal
number of members. One will be the group of runner (thieves).
Another group will be the group of chaser (police).
The chaser should capture the runner. When a chaser catches
a runner both of them should be out of the play boundary. Here,
the chaser is said to capture the runner and he/she should grab
the runner, till the game ends. When the game proceeds, number
of players within the play boundary decreases whereas pairs of
runner and chaser outside the boundary increases. After all the
pairs are formed, the role is inverted i.e. previous chasers will
be runner group and the previous runner will be the chaser.
Teacher should record the time of both of the groups. Then the
chaser group which makes all possible pairs in less time will be
the winner.
Game 3 : Pair chasing
First of all players must be scattered within the play-boundary.
A pair of chasers is fixed by the teacher/instructor. When
the command is given, the pair starts to chase the students.
When they touch the new players he/she must wait outside
the boundary until another is touched. After that a new pair is
also formed. As the game proceeds, number of pairs within play
boundary increases. Finally, the player who remains untouched
will be the winner.
Quick Test 1: Doing activities
Practice the following minor games among friends.

Local games
Local games are different from locality to locality. You can play
your own local games on the playground as well. Some of our
local games are Dandi-Biyo, Gatta, Bagchal and Skipping with
rope, etc.
Games 1 : Dandi-Biyo
Before playing this game, you must
understand the words used here.
Dandi is a stick of around 2 feet in
length.
Biyo is a small stick of approximately
half a foot, sharpened at both ends in
opposite sides.
The square pit is the place where Biyo
is kept on its mouth horizontally. Remember the Biyo should not
go deep into the pit while placing horizontally. The Biyo is thrown
with the help of dandi as far as possible.
To play this game, players must be divided into two groups. A
group will throw the Biyo while other group members try to block
the Biyo such that the Biyo does not move away from the pit. The
distance between the Biyo and the pit is measured and marks
are awarded.
If any other players happen to catch the Biyo with the stick (dandi)
with their hand, then the player will not be awarded the mark.
The thrower will be eliminated and next player should throw the
Biyo. If the Biyo crosses the end line during its throwing, the
player throwing the Biyo will get certain highest marks.
218 MY WAY
Science, Health and Physical Education - 3
When all the members in a team finish throwing the Biyo turn by
turn, they collectively get a combined team marks.
Now the role is changed. Another group who tried blocking the
Biyo will throw it turn by turn, and they try to get marks as much
as they can.
At last the team scoring the greater marks will be the winner.
You have to remember that it is a local game. Hence its rules
and regulations may differ from place to place.
Game 2 : Gatta
Playing gatta (pebbles) is fun for
children. Most common gatta game
is played at least between two
members using five pebbles.
In the first step, the Gattas are dispersed in a small region. Then
one is chosen to be thrown up in the air.
You should throw one and try to catch another on the ground at
your hand along with the thrown pebble. Remember you should
not let the pebble in the air strike the ground, otherwise, you will
lose your chance and it will be new turn for the other player.
In the first step, you will throw one in air and catch other one by
one in four successive throwings.
In the second step, you will throw one and Did YOU know ?
