Peru may be most famous for its mystical ancient ruins – and there’s no denying that Machu Picchu is its spectacular crown jewel, but its wonders extend far beyond only that. From the breathtaking Inca Trail, Sacred Valley and stunning city of Cusco to the colossal Colca Canyon, the lush expanse of the Amazon rainforest, vibrant cities, vast sapphire lakes, the striking Pacific coastline and much more still, this is a country simply bursting with remarkable sights and unforgettable experiences. But beyond its iconic landmarks and spectacular vistas, it’s Peru’s vibrant culture that truly enchants visitors and cements its place in their hearts. Bustling markets showcasing colourful textiles, the tantalising flavours of the Peruvian cuisine, lively music and dance, and always… the warm welcome of the Peruvian people. This is a place where ancient history meets modern vibrancy, and it leaves an indelible mark on all who visit.

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - 12 | PERU Just three hours south of Lima, Paracas’ stunning coastal scenery, diverse wildlife and UNESCO-recognised marine reserve have made it a favourite Peruvian getaway. Most famous for its proximity to the Ballestas Islands, one of the best wildlife-spotting experiences in the country where you can see the likes of Humboldt penguins, pelicans and sea lions, Paracas also boasts quiet beaches perfect for relaxing, while its rugged coastline and incredible sand dunes offer great adrenaline-pumping opportunities like sand boarding and dune buggy rides. You can also take flights from Paracas to see the famous Nazca lines, the mysterious and iconic pre-Inca geometric images carved into the landscape. Once known as the ‘City of Kings’, Lima is home to stunning colonial architecture and historic monuments that have rightly earned it a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage list and are sure to enthral all culture enthusiasts. As will discovering the museums, galleries, historic charms and modern influences throughout the city’s various neighbourhoods. The famous Malecón de Miraflores, a scenic clifftop promenade that stretches for almost six miles, is another must-visit, and the perfect place to soak up the vibrancy of the city’s personality away from the bustle of the city centre. But it’s Lima’s culinary scene that perhaps makes this city quite so unmissable. Considered one of the top culinary destinations in the world, many of Latin America’s top chefs have set up restaurants here, yet it’s not only world-renowned restaurants that make it such a culinary hotspot; from hip oceanfront eateries and swanky bars to authentic local gems and lively food markets, your culinary senses will be in for a real treat, whatever your style and whatever your budget. PARACAS LIMA One of the least-visited regions of the country, Northern Peru is in fact bursting with treasures that could only be overlooked in a country as culturally impressive as Peru, and it more than rewards those who visit with its remarkable wealth of unique, under-explored treasures of ancient pre-Incan and pre-Columbian civilisations. Set amidst the always-impressive Peruvian landscapes, towns such as Trujillo, Chiclayo and Chachapoyas are worthy of visits in themselves, as well as serving as gateways to archaeological delights such as Chan Chan – the capital of the Chimú culture, the ancient Moche Pyramids, and Peru’s tallest free-falling waterfall, the stunning Gocta Falls. NORTHERN PERU Perched atop dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Peru’s capital is one of South America’s most lively, tantalising and culturally colourful cities.

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - PERU | 13 CUSCO The ancient capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco will have you captivated from the moment you arrive. Narrow cobbled streets, stunning colonial buildings and churches, a buzzing central plaza, vibrant markets and fantastic restaurants all contribute to the charm that Cusco so effortlessly exudes. Plus, of course, there’s the extraordinary Incan history, from the Inca foundations still visible in the city’s buildings to the must-see sites like the nearby Sacsayhuamán fortress and Koricancha temple, which will wonderfully whet your appetite for your onward journey. SACRED VALLEY A picturesque region of lush farmlands surrounded by dramatic Andean landscapes dotted with beautiful villages, hamlets and Incan ruins, the Sacred Valley of the Incas was a key area of settlement to them. Sitting midway between Cusco and Machu Picchu, you can only reach the famous citadel by passing through it – either by train or walking the Inca Trail – but it’s well worth taking some time to explore properly if you can. Charming towns and fascinating Incan sites are scattered throughout the valley, such as the impressive fortress of Ollantaytambo, Moray’s swirling agricultural terraces, and the Maras salt mines – 6,000 salt ponds carved by the Incas that are still in use today. The town of Pisac is well worth a visit for its indigenous handicraft market, and there are also a huge range of activities to enjoy across the valley, from spectacular hiking routes to biking, rafting and climbing. BELMOND ANDEAN EXPLORER For an intimate, luxurious, truly unforgettable journey to the land of the Incas, the Belmond Andean Explorer (p.22) provides a unique Peruvian highlands experience that sets new standards for luxury travel. A luxury overnight sleeper train that runs from Arequipa or Lake Titicaca to Cusco, it takes its 48 passengers on an outstanding journey through the spectacular scenery of the Andes while enjoying exquisite cuisine and impeccable hospitality. They’re not only the gateway to Machu Picchu. Cusco and the Sacred Valley are extraordinary, mystical, utterly unmissable destinations in themselves. CUSCO & THE SACRED VALLEY Private cooking workshop at a Maras community: learn how to make Timp, a delicious local soup, before sharing the table with a Marassina family. Don’t Miss

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - Iconic, inspiring, mesmerising, and everything you dreamed of. This spectacular mist-shrouded citadel will more than live up to your every expectation. 14 | PERU THE LOST CITY OF THE INCAS UNESCO-recognised and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is undoubtedly one of South America’s most impressive sites. Discovered by explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911, this incredible ‘Lost City of the Incas’ is perched atop a mountain deep in the Andean countryside, surrounded by a spectacular landscape that will quite simply take your breath away. Often shrouded in cloud due to its high altitude, the slow reveal of its majesty as the mist clears only enhances its atmospheric setting. REACHING THE CITADEL Due to its remote location among the peaks of the Andes, Machu Picchu is only accessible by foot or a 3.5-hour train ride from Cusco. But this journey is all part of its majestic wonder. The Inca Trail. Perhaps the most well-known and iconic way to reach the citadel, this four-day hike follows ancient Incan pathways through outstanding scenery and past countless centuries-old ruins, before finally reaching Machu Picchu at sunrise – an experience that we guarantee will stay with you forever. While the Inca Trail is the most famous, there are other hikes that offer equally impressive scenery but usually less people, such as the Lares and Salkantay routes. By Train. If hiking doesn’t appeal, the good news is the scenic 3.5-hour train journey from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, the nearest town to Machu Picchu, is just as memorable. Options include the Inca Rail or Peru Rail, or you can upgrade to the luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham (p.22) and enjoy the glamour of a bygone era, gourmet cuisine, delicious cocktails and live music while watching the spectacular scenery pass by. EXPLORING MACHU PICCHU From Aguas Calientes it’s a 20-minute bus ride up the mountain to the citadel. For those wanting time to fully explore, or if your dream is to sit on the serene mountainside and watch the sun rise over this spectacular masterpiece, there’s a small selection of hotels in the town. There is only one hotel located at the actual Machu Picchu site, the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge (p.23), which comes with the great benefit of being able to beat the crowds first thing in the morning. Within the citadel, there are a series of trails that take visitors around its temples, houses, storerooms and sacrificial sites, and there are various hikes to neighbouring peaks such as Huayna Picchu, Huchuy Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, which enable you to enjoy different viewpoints of the magnificent ruins. Lima, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Puno for Lake Titicaca, and Aguas Calientes for Machu Picchu. HOW DID YOU GET AROUND? It varied between flying, trains and by road. All were incredible! The journeys by road can be long, but we always stopped in many places along the way, so were able to see so much more. FAVOURITE LOCATION? Nicole: I loved Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes, they felt so stripped back and authentic. Milly: I absolutely loved Cusco. It was incredibly vibrant and had some amazing restaurants! MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT? Nicole: Climbing Huayna Picchu and watching the sun rise above Machu Picchu. Also trying guinea pig in a Belmond hotel! Milly: Condor’s Cross in Colca Valley one morning – we saw eight condors at once, amazing! BEST HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE? Nicole: I loved the floating island of Uros on Lake Titicaca, and meeting the locals there. Milly: Machu Picchu. It was beyond amazing. FAVOURITE FOOD AND DRINK? Nicole: Peruvian ceviche, it’s incredible! If you’re feeling brave, try ‘cuy’ (guinea pig), the local delicacy. Milly: It has to be the pisco sours! I’d also recommend trying chicha morada, a drink made out of purple corn, it’s a very unique taste! The food and drink in Peru is exceptional both in quality and variety, you can eat very well here! WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND PACKING? Pack layers, as the climate is so different in all areas of Peru! A raincoat is a must, as sudden downpours are common (but shortlived). And definitely don’t forget sun cream! SUM UP YOUR TRIP IN THREE WORDS: Nicole: Adventurous, beautiful, bucket-list. Milly: Exciting, colourful and surprising.

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - 16 | PERU Peru’s second-largest city is an indisputably beautiful one. Known as the White City thanks to the vivid white volcanic rock that was used to construct so many of its buildings, it’s also full of leafy plazas, pretty archways and vibrant colours, not to mention being framed by three volcanoes that loom impressively over the city, adding even more to its striking aesthetics. Dating back to the 1500s, the city’s UNESCO-designated historic centre is packed full of stunning baroque mansions, neoclassical churches and grand plazas. The Monastery of Santa Catalina is definitely not to be missed, but this is a city with many delights to discover – not least of all its wonderfully laid-back vibe, and a thriving gastronomic scene that rivals that of Lima. In southern Peru, a spectacular fourhour drive from Arequipa through a rugged volcano-strewn landscape and the fertile and verdant Colca Valley, lies the magnificent Colca Canyon. One of the deepest in the world and twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, the Colca Canyon is an extraordinary changing landscape of barren steppes, steep green canyon walls, and stillused ancient terraced hillsides built by the Incas for agricultural means. Full of history, traditions and Incan ruins, it offers some exceptional hiking and horse riding opportunities, there are also hot springs that can be enjoyed, and it’s one of the best places to spot the mighty Andean condor in the wild, with viewing points that enable them to be seen at eye level as they ride the warm air currents through the canyon. AREQUIPA COLCA CANYON Bordered by both Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world, the largest in South America, and a sacred place of the Incas. Steeped in culture and history, it’s also a serene and idyllic place to spend some time discovering Peru’s famously friendly indigenous cultures. Visiting the lake’s numerous fascinating islands is a must, such as Taquile with its famed handicrafts, and the remarkable inhabited Uros floating islands, made entirely from reeds. The local communities are known for their welcoming nature and it’s possible to visit and learn about their way of life, both from boat trips or unique homestay opportunities that allow you to really immerse yourself in their fascinating way of life. LAKE TITICACA Remote, vast and free from the crowds, this spectacular steep-sided canyon is also home to incredible history, culture, Incan ruins and centuries of tradition.

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - PERU | 17 PERUVIAN AMAZON The mighty Amazon is most often associated with Brazil, where 60% of its phenomenally vast 2.1 million square miles of rainforest is to be found. But this remarkable jungle spans no less than nine of South America’s countries, and Peru proudly claims the second largest share. GATEWAYS TO THE AMAZON Peru’s Amazon has two main gateways: Iquitos, in the far north of Peru, or Puerto Maldonado in the south, close to the Bolivia and Brazil borders. Both areas provide endless opportunity for wildlife spotting and jungle immersion. In the north, the Amazon River is the main attraction, with opportunity to see the famous pink river dolphin, manatees and river otters. Although there are a few lodges in the region, the most popular option is to take river cruises, which range from wonderfully rustic to gloriously luxurious. The south provides more opportunity to really immerse yourself in jungle life by meeting local communities and seeing what life in this unique setting is like. Plus, of course, immersing yourself in the lush, tropical, magical flora and fauna for which the Amazon is so famous. JUNGLE LODGES Accommodations are typically jungle eco-lodges that give a wonderful sense of immersion and being at one with the nature around you. Some lodges come with extras such as private plunge pools and spas, making for an even more memorable stay as you bask in tranquillity while soaking in the sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest around you. THRILLING ADVENTURE Opportunities to explore are easily done from the lodges and while exact options may vary depending on where you stay, they’ll never disappoint. Think thrilling jungle hikes, kayaking through backwaters, spotting caimans and giant otters while exploring oxbow lakes, visiting vast swathes of parrots and macaws at clay licks, swimming with pink river dolphins, walking through the treetops on canopy tours, climbing observation towers and so much more. Covering a whopping 60% of Peru’s total landmass, the Peruvian Amazon is vast, pristine, sparsely populated by humans, and simply teeming with immense and spectacular biodiversity. INKATERRA RESERVA AMAZONICA Deep in Peru’s lush southern Amazon, this 35 cabana lodge is the most comfortable option around. AQUA NERA Stylish and contemporary, the Aqua Nera is a luxury option for cruising Peru’s northern Amazon.

BOLIVIA

BOLIVIA | 25 Steeped in indigenous traditions and home to some of Latin America’s most dramatic and surreal landscapes, Bolivia is unpolished and authentic, intriguing and spectacular. This is quintessential South America. Nestled in the very centre of the South American continent, landlocked Bolivia is a rugged, secluded and often overlooked destination. But it’s these very things that make it such an exciting country to explore. From its colourful and still-dominant indigenous culture that has largely escaped modernisation to remarkable landscapes and adrenalinefuelled adventures, Bolivia is a compelling combination of untouched authenticity and outstanding scenic splendour. The surreal beauty of the mirror-like Uyuni Salt Flats is deservedly one of its biggest draws, but it’s by no means its only highlight. Discover the striking Valley of the Moon, the lush Bolivian Amazon, the serene shores of Lake Titicaca or the extraordinary high-altitude city of La Paz. Explore vibrant markets and stunning architecture in cities like Sucre and Potosí, follow dinosaur tracks in Torotoro National Park or immerse yourself in local culture and flavours. Bolivia truly promises a richness of sights and experiences that will leave an everlasting impression. May to Oct: Peak season; cooler evenings & dry with temperatures rising in Oct. Best for enjoying outdoor activities. Nov to Mar: Summer, more rain, fewer crowds. Best for Uyuni Salt Flat reflections & cultural events in La Paz. - Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - 26 | BOLIVIA The beautiful and serene Lake Titicaca, with its stunning mountain backdrop, fantastic scenery, historical importance and rich local culture, is quite simply one of Bolivia’s mustvisits. Belonging to both Bolivia and Peru, it’s a lake held sacred by both countries. Sun Island, in Bolivia’s southern part of the lake, was believed by the Incas to be the birthplace of the sun. Full of fascinating Incan ruins, it’s also a wonderful place to witness the deep-rooted cultural traditions of the local communities, who still wear traditional clothing and are famously welcoming to visitors. Homestays provide the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the local culture, but even short visits offer remarkable insight into the lives and history of this important area. LAKE TITICACA Officially the world’s highest capital city, La Paz might also claim the title of the capital with the most dramatic landscape. Snow-capped mountains loom over this sprawling city built across steep hillsides, while nearby Moon Valley on the city’s outskirts, with its fascinating rock formations, is just another element contributing to the city’s uniqueness. A ‘literally’ unmissable highlight is the teleférico – an incredible subway in the sky that not only provides the best means of travelling between the city’s major attractions in record time, but also gives the opportunity to enjoy fantastic views and a different perspective of the city. There’s also historic architecture and museums to admire, the ultimate Bolivian market experience at the ‘Mercado 16 de Julio’, colourful customs, trendy cafes, edgy art scenes and boutique hotels, all of which adds to the charm and appeal of Bolivia’s high-altitude capital. La Paz is a busy, eclectic and somewhat chaotic blend of the modern and the historic. A little rough around the edges, it also has layers of undeniable charm. LA PAZ Set in a mountain valley, Sucre is a beautiful colonial city full of elegant whitewashed buildings with red-tiled roofs, tree-lined plazas, baroque churches and architecture that earned it a UNESCO World Heritage designation. The site of Bolivia’s proclaimed independence, it’s also recognised as the nation’s constitutional capital and therefore considered by many to be the ‘official’ capital city. Boasting wonderful restaurants, excellent museums and a warm and sunny climate, there’s plenty to keep you entertained while walking Sucre’s pretty streets. Just outside the city there’s beautiful countryside providing great hiking opportunities, including a quarry with dinosaur footprints, and just a few hours’ drive away is the historic mining city of Potosí. SUCRE

Located in Southwest Bolivia, a lofty 3,656m above sea level and covering an impressive 4,050 square miles of the Altiplano, you’ll find the Salar de Uyuni – the world’s largest salt flat and one of the most extreme and remarkable vistas in all of Latin America. A MESMERISING SIGHT The remnants of an evaporated prehistoric lake, this thick salt crust that was left behind is a spectacular expanse of white, so vast it can even be seen from space. Embossed with what looks like hexagons, it’s a surreal yet stunning landscape. When dry, the salar is an awe-inspiring expanse of nothingness. Just blue skies juxtaposed against the never-ending whiteness. But a few times a year, nearby lakes overflow and a thin layer of water transforms the surface into a mirror, perfectly reflecting the blue sky and its white clouds, and causing the horizon to entirely disappear. AN ICONIC PLAYGROUND Surreally beautiful to look at, the distorted perspective of this unique landscape means there’s great fun to be had with a camera, something that you’re almost guaranteed to spend a fair bit of time enjoying during your time here. But there’s plenty more to see and do too. A top highlight is Isla Incahuasi, a lonely rocky outcrop sat right in the middle of the salt flats and covered in enormous and ancient cacti. The train graveyard is another – a cemetery of rusted, abandoned locomotives; once a sign of Uyuni’s importance as a transportation hub, now rusted relics, but an impressive site nonetheless. And nearby, in the foothills of the Tunupa Volcano above the village of Coquesa, are caves that are home to six mummies thought to be over 500 years old. UYUNI Tunupa Volcano: Take in the views of this majestic volcano, which towers over the salar and is held sacred by the local people. Don’t Miss

But when you know who its neighbours are, it shouldn’t come as any surprise to hear that it’s simply brimming with extraordinary and unforgettably beautiful natural landscapes. The Uyuni Salt Flats and Lake Titicaca are its best known, but this is a country full of authentic, unique and largely untouched natural marvels, so there are a few other gems you may want to factor into your itinerary. When it comes to natural wonders, Bolivia is definitely one of South America’s best-kept secrets. SILOLI DESERT A barren, windswept valley full of multicoloured hills and strange rock formations, lakes of extraordinary colours, volcanoes, spurting geysers and lagoons filled with flocks of flamingos, the Siloli Desert is surreal in its beauty, and utterly captivating. Often called the Dalí Desert due to its resemblance to the landscapes painted by surrealist artist Salvador Dalí, it’s a stark and remote otherworldly oasis that is definitely one of Bolivia’s most astonishing natural wonders. Located in Southwest Bolivia, the Siloli Desert is ideal to combine with a visit to Chile and the Atacama Desert. BOLIVIA’S NATURAL WONDERS From the Amazon to the Andes and the Uyuni Salt Flats to Lake Titicaca, Bolivia’s natural wonders are remarkable in their variety, their authenticity, and their raw, rugged beauty.

Umajalanta Cave, one of the country’s biggest, offers an adventurous caving experience that rewards those who enter with impressive stalactites, stalagmites, waterfalls and underground pools. But the main attraction of Torotoro is undoubtedly its 3,500 impeccably preserved dinosaur footprints, dating back a mind-boggling 65 million years, to the Cretaceous period. MADIDI NATIONAL PARK Sitting in the Amazon basin, this jungle paradise is home to an extraordinary number of plants and animal species making it one of the most diverse ecological sanctuaries in the world. Known for its medicinal plants, it’s also home to over 1,100 bird species, monkeys, spectacled bears, pumas, jaguars and pink river dolphins. You’ll also find fascinating indigenous communities, Incan archaeological sites, and landscapes that range from snow-capped mountains to cloud forests, winding rivers and rolling grasslands. The best way to explore is on riverboat cruises, or on walking jungle tours with expert naturalist guides.

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - A capital city high in the glorious Andean landscapes, Quito boasts beauty and history, modernity, nature, and much more still… 34 | ECUADOR A couple of hours north of Quito in the Andean highlands is the small city of Otavalo, surrounded by a stunning landscape of snow-capped volcanoes and lush rolling hills. Most famous for hosting the largest indigenous market in South America, you’ll find locals in traditional dress selling an amazing range of handicrafts including colourful textiles, paintings, jewellery and much more. Saturdays and Wednesdays are the biggest market days, but it can be visited any day of the week. Nearby is the pretty town of Cotacachi, famous for its boutique shops selling quality leather wares, or you could head to the dormant Cotacachi Volcano for a hike around the stunning crater lake at its base. The first city ever to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Quito’s stunning historic centre is the largest and best preserved of its kind, with narrow cobbled streets leading to beautiful whitewashed colonial buildings, ornate churches, grand mansions and leafy plazas. Quito’s modern side is then a vibrant mix of sophisticated culinary and nightlife scenes, skyscrapers and commercial buzz. But venture out of the city and there’s plenty to enjoy too. The second-highest capital city in the world with an impressive volcanic backdrop, Quito’s surroundings are stunning. There’s a teleférico (cable car) system running up the surrounding hillsides that provides spectacular views of the city. The active Cotopaxi Volcano is a day trip away, and on a clear day it can be seen from the city. And nearby is the ‘Middle of the World’ monument and the interactive Intiñan Museum, where visitors can stand with one foot each in the northern and southern hemisphere. OTAVALO QUITO Ecuador’s largest city and the gateway to the Galápagos, Guayaquil is a fascinating mix of modern and historic. Having undergone a recent transformation, it has emerged from being a scruffy port to a vibrant and sprawling modern city that is now the commercial heart of the country. With its location on the Guayas River, the ‘malecón’ boardwalk is one of the city’s modern highlights. A gleaming urbanrenewal project, it’s a lovely place to stroll and discover a wealth of great bars, restaurants, museums, monuments and gardens. In stark contrast, the historic quarter of Las Peñas, dating back to the 1530s, is a charming hillside jumble of winding cobbled streets and colourful buildings. Climb to the top of the hill for fantastic views of the city and river. GUAYAQUIL

One of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, this lush green forest smothered in low-lying clouds is the perfect place to reconnect with nature, discover an extraordinary wealth of flora and fauna, and engage in thrilling and unforgettable activities. MINDO CLOUD FOREST RESERVE While the cloud forest stretches much further, the region surrounding the small town of Mindo is one of the best known and most popular, with many lodges located within the Mindo, Mashpi and Bellavista Reserves. Most of the surrounding area has been established as reserves in order to protect this extraordinary ecosystem and its biodiversity while still enabling visitors to enjoy its splendour. INCREDIBLE BIODIVERSITY Home to over 500 different bird species, including an array of hummingbirds, the golden-headed quetzal, toucans and the gloriously flamboyant cock-ofthe-rock to name but a few, the cloud forest is a prime spot for any bird lover. But there’s also wildlife that includes sloths, monkeys, butterflies, bats and, if you’re lucky, pumas and even the Andean ‘spectacled’ bear, not to mention the abundance of beautiful and varied flora, in particular, the 4,500 different species of orchid. EXPLORATION AND ADVENTURE Just being within this rare ecosystem is an adventure in itself, but the wealth of activities on offer means you’ll be spoiled for choice in terms of how you choose to enjoy it. More serene excursions include birdwatching, visiting butterfly gardens, climbing observation towers, or even the Mindo Chocolate Tour at the finca El Quetzal. There are of course lots of wonderful hikes to be enjoyed, often to secluded waterfalls or swimming holes, while those wanting to get their adrenaline pumping will love ziplining through the tree canopies or river tubing down the Mindo River. Just a few short hours north of Quito is what feels like another world entirely: a steamy, sub-tropical, cloud-smothered rainforest bursting with colourful and extraordinary life.

It’s a gloriously picturesque region of lush green valleys, glistening lagoons and emerald crater lakes, and, of course, volcanoes. Dozens of them, in fact, many of which are still active, and many so tall they sit among the clouds with permanently snow-capped peaks. An exceptional hiking location, experienced climbers will want to challenge themselves with the likes of Chimborazo, Tungurahua or the perfectly conical Cotopaxi, one of the tallest peaks in the world. If hiking isn’t your thing there are also opportunities for horse riding and biking, but even those wanting a far more serene experience will be won over by the sheer beauty of the landscapes. There are also remote mountain villages to discover, where llamas wander the streets and deep turquoise lakes are hidden inside volcanic craters, and beautiful cities such as Baños with its abundance of natural hot springs, dozens of waterfalls and all kinds of adrenaline sports on offer. Stretching 200 miles down the spine of the Andes is a chain of towering volcanoes surrounded by spectacular valleys, and it’s every bit as remarkable as it sounds. CUENCA Known as the ‘Athens of Ecuador’ thanks to its exceptional classical architecture and clearly European influence, the Andean city of Cuenca is generally considered to be the most beautiful city in the country, and it’s not hard to see why. With its cobbled streets, colonial buildings with red-tiled roofs and whitewashed facades, baroque churches, magnificent cathedrals, and pretty plazas, this UNESCO-recognised city is a joy to wander around, with many interesting museums, cosy cafes, and markets selling flowers and local handicrafts. Despite the misleading name, the Panama hat also originates from the area, and a visit to one of the local factories continuing this traditional craft is highly recommended. Sitting in the Andean highlands, Cuenca is also surrounded by stunning mountains, no fewer than four rivers, and the scenic El Cajas National Park with its unique páramo landscape and numerous lakes and lagoons. There are also many Incan ruins in the region, the most famous of which is Ingapirca, Ecuador’s largest and most impressive Incan site. Laid-back, quaint and undeniably beautiful, Cuenca is a close contender alongside Quito for being Ecuador’s most important, not to mention picturesque, colonial city.

And while the Amazon is famous for its wealth and diversity of flora and fauna in general, Ecuador’s relatively small portion proudly boasts the title of being one of its most pristine and biologically diverse. YASUNÍ NATIONAL PARK Spanning nearly 4,000 square miles within the Ecuadorian Amazon is the incredible Yasuní National Park, a natural reserve that is home to such a vast array of animal and plant species that it was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1989. Accessible via a flight from Quito to Coca, followed by a two-hour motorised canoe ride along the Napo River – one of the main tributaries into the Amazon River, the journey into this remarkable piece of jungle is all part of the adventure. TEEMING WITH LIFE From parrots to aracari to the prehistoric looking hoatzin, the Yasuní reserve is home to just under 600 different species of bird. Yet it also boasts an extraordinary diversity of mammals, butterflies, amphibians and reptiles, with caiman, river turtles, giant river otters, anacondas, golden tamarin, red howler monkeys, sloths and pink river dolphins just a fraction of the incredible wildlife you can expect to find here. Visiting the park is therefore all about exploring this remarkable diversity, and knowledgeable guides will help you discover its treasures while leading you on excursions such as canoe rides, jungle hikes, visits to observation towers and local communities, and even piranha catch-and-release fishing trips. JUNGLE ADVENTURES There are a variety of remotely located lodges deep in the jungle that offer an authentic and immersive Amazon experience. Ranging from the more rural to the luxurious, they all offer many activities and opportunities for exploring the jungle. Alternatively, one of the most popular ways to experience the Ecuadorian Amazon is on premium cruises down the Napo River aboard the Anakonda or Manatee river boats, allowing you to explore areas rarely visited, meet indigenous communities and kayak along the river, all while enjoying the comfort and luxury of a floating boutique hotel. Teeming with life and wonderfully untouched, the Ecuadorian Amazon is one of the best places to experience the majesty of the Amazon Rainforest is its most raw state. ECUADORIAN AMAZON

Both seasons bring slightly different delights, so you may want to plan based on the things you want to see, do and experience most. DECEMBER TO MAY Although officially the wet season, there’s no need to worry about rain ruining your trip. The tropical showers are at their heaviest from January through March, but even then the rainfall is usually short. Predominantly hot and sunny days paired with clear, calm, warm waters make this one of the most popular times of year to visit, especially if wanting to enjoy calm THE GALÁPAGOS Exceptional all year round, there’s no such thing as a bad time to visit the Galápagos. This makes it a popular time of year for those wanting to enjoy land-based explorations without the heat, but the waters – although cooler and with reduced visibility – are also at their most active, making this prime diving time. This season sees the arrival of humpback whales, large pods of dolphins and whale sharks. Giant tortoises begin to nest, penguins are abundant, marine life is at its most prolific, and flightless cormorants begin their beautiful courtship rituals. This is also the best time to see the famous red sesuvium plant carpeting South Plaza Island.

Ecuadorian Amazon, Quito, Otavalo and the Galápagos Islands. HOW DID YOU GET THERE? From London to Quito, via Miami – with American Airlines/British Airways. FAVOURITE LOCATION? The Galápagos Islands, they are just so unique and so well protected it’s incredible. It felt like we’d gone back in time, everything – the terrain, wildlife, plant life – feels so prehistoric. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT? Arriving in the Amazon. We journeyed down the Napo River by motorboat for two hours, then smaller paddle boats for another two-hour journey down a quiet creek to Napo Wildlife Centre. All I could hear was the sounds of insects, birds in the trees, macaws flying overhead and monkeys calling, then a giant river otter bobbed in front of us as we arrived at the lodge. Just incredible. BEST HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE? There are two. In the Galápagos Islands, swimming with sharks, turtles, sting rays, mobula rays, eagle rays, parrot fish and more – all on one excursion, it was fantastic! The other was horse-riding from Hacienda Zuleta in the highlands, near Otavalo. We rode out to an Andean condor breeding centre, and as if on cue, a wild condor flew overhead. We couldn’t have planned it better. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND PACKING? Pack for all weathers, and be prepared for some early mornings. FAVOURITE FOOD AND DRINK? Potato soup. Ecuadorians eat a lot of soup, and this is lovely, warming, filling and really homely. FAVOURITE PHOTO YOU TOOK? Hard to pick, but probably this one of a lonely blue-footed booby. SUM UP YOUR TRIP IN THREE WORDS: Wildlife + scenery = extraordinary OUR ROUTES IN ECUADOR & THE GALÁPAGOS
