- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - 54 | GALÁPAGOS THE GALÁPAGOS: CRUISE VS LAND CRUISING THE GALÁPAGOS One of the biggest benefits of cruising is the ability to go further afield, with the ships having both the time and ability to access places and wildlife that are otherwise out of reach. They also tend to navigate at night, meaning you’ll wake up to a new island each day, immediately ready to discover a new part of this paradise. Small group excursions, lots of water activities and the opportunity to see an abundance of wildlife is a given. As is wonderful food, spectacular views and getting to know other like-minded travellers. Carrying anywhere from 14 to 100 passengers and ranging from the ultra-luxurious to the more laidback, there is a huge range of ships available, to suit all tastes and budgets – including many solotraveller options. Smaller ships often have a convivial sociable feel, although larger ships tend to offer more communal areas to relax in, and offer more stability if you’re concerned about your sea legs. LAND-BASED ADVENTURES The greatest benefit of land-based Galápagos holidays is the flexibility. Unrestricted by a ship’s itinerary, you can explore the islands as and when you choose, and spend more time getting to know individual islands, their wildlife and their communities more intimately. Island-hopping holidays can easily be arranged with a few nights on a few different islands, which is well worth considering as a way to see even more. Inter-island flights are also possible if you’d rather avoid open-water crossings. There’s a range of accommodation across a number of islands, from upmarket ocean-view hotels to safari-style camps in the highlands, plus an everexpanding array of activities to keep you busy, from hiking to mountain-biking, wildlife-safaris, kayaking and snorkelling trips. And of course, just because you’re staying on land doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a day trip sailing out to other islands. From luxury yachts to safari-style camps in the volcanic highlands, the Galápagos has the perfect base from which every type of traveller can explore.

The country’s diverse geography, with its varying microclimates and soils, contributes to the uniqueness of its wines, while Chilean winemakers then combine traditional techniques with modern innovation to create the dynamic industry that has garnered international acclaim. Central to the Chilean wine scene is the Maipo Valley, renowned for its cabernet sauvignon. Moving north, the Casablanca Valley’s cool climate is conducive to excellent chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, while the Colchagua Valley, also known for its colonial architecture and scenic beauty, boasts a wide range of fullbodied wines, including carménère, merlot and malbec. Travelling between regions along the open stretches of scenic roads is a popular choice for self-drive visitors and a great way to experience, and taste, the diversity found here. But discovering the Chilean wine region goes beyond just the glass, as vineyard accommodations offer enchanting escapes. Set amidst the rolling hills and majestic landscapes, these lodgings provide a unique opportunity to live the wine experience. Embark on horseback rides or leisurely cycles through the vineyards, and absorb the tranquil beauty of the surroundings while getting an up-close look at the winemaking process. For a touch of culture, nearby museums offer insights into the region’s viticultural heritage or, to truly unwind, indulge in wellness activities, from yoga amidst the vines to rejuvenating spa treatments that harness the healing power of the surroundings. Vast swathes of rolling vineyards and world-class wineries provide a stunning setting for one of Chile’s most tranquil, enjoyable and tantalising escapes. WINE REGION

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - Often referred to as one of the driest places on Earth, the Atacama Desert presents a stark yet captivating landscape. Extending over 40,000 square miles across the entire northern third of the country, the desert stretches out between the Andes Mountains to the east and the Chilean Coast Range to the west, and its unique blend of geographical and climatic conditions has created an otherworldly landscape that is often likened to that of Mars. INCREDIBLE LANDSCAPES Despite its extreme conditions, the Atacama Desert is far from barren. In fact, it’s home to a variety of fascinating ecosystems. You’ll find the renowned salt flats of the Salar de Atacama – vast expanses of coral-like salt crusts beautifully contrasting against the deep blue sky and home to flocks of flamingos; steaming geysers giving evidence of the region’s underlying geothermal activity; and the eroded rock formations of Moon Valley that give rise to a truly breathtaking lunarlike ambiance, and which become especially mesmerising when bathed in the reddish glow of sunset. AN ASTRONOMICAL HAVEN Human history is also etched into the desert’s tapestry, with remnants of ancient civilisations such as the wellpreserved mummies found in the dry caves of the region. But perhaps one of the most awe-inspiring aspects of the Atacama Desert is its role as an astronomical haven. Its high elevation, clear skies and minimal light pollution make it a prime location for some of the world’s most advanced telescopes and observatories, and scientists and stargazers flock to the desert to explore its celestial wonders. The desert’s rich history, unique landscapes and desolate beauty truly make it an unmissable destination for those wanting to experience one of the Earth’s most extreme environments. 60 | CHILE ATACAMA DESERT Vast, desolate, barren, spectacular. From lunar-like valleys to flamingo-filled lagoons, the Atacama is like nowhere else on Earth, and full of surprises. Devil’s Throat bike tour: an outstanding & surprisingly easy ride, cycling through the incredible scenery of this dramatic canyon. Don’t Miss

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - CHILE | 61 LAKE DISTRICT PUERTO VARAS & PUCÓN Easily accessible via a two-hour flight from Santiago to Puerto Montt, most people stay in the beautiful town of Pucón in the north, or pretty Puerto Varas on the shores of Lake Llanquihue. These scenic and laid-back towns are often likened to ski resorts due to their buzzy atmospheres and wide range of bars and restaurants to enjoy of an evening, while serving as ideal bases from which to engage in the plethora of activities the Lake District offers during the day. They also provide easy access to other highlights, such as the Petrohué River Falls – beautiful waterfalls that flow over dark volcanic rock, Osorno Mountain, or Chiloé Island with its iconic stilt houses and UNESCO-recognised wooden churches. SCENIC ADVENTURES With 12 major lakes and dozens of smaller ones, mountains, volcanoes and acres of forest, it’s no surprise that the activities on offer are wide ranging. From hiking to biking, rock climbing, skiing, horse riding, kayaking, fishing, sailing, rafting and much more, the adventurous and the active are genuinely spoiled for choice, but this is a landscape that just as easily lends itself to passing the days in tranquil serenity. A wonderful self-drive area, the scenery alone is worth visiting for, while the traditional villages, many of which have distinct German influences, are also a delight to explore. The region is also home to the indigenous Mapuche culture, whose traditional dwellings can be visited, where you can learn more about their culture. THE THREE LAKES CROSSING Chile’s Lake District also provides a unique opportunity to cross the border over to Bariloche in Argentina (p.82) on the famous Three Lakes Crossing: a full-day journey crossing the Andes Mountains via boat trips across three beautiful lakes, with overland connections in between. Vast sapphire lakes, snow-capped mountains, emerald-green forests and charming lakeside villages. This is a region of spectacular scenery and incredible outdoor adventure.

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - 62 | CHILE EASTER ISLAND One of the most remote and isolated places on Earth, Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, is a mysterious and enigmatic destination located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 2,300 miles off the coast of Chile. MYSTERIOUS STATUES Easter Island is renowned for its mystifying moai statues – colossal stone figures that stand proudly across the island as a testament to its unique history and culture. These monolithic statues, carved from volcanic rock, vary in size and intricacy. Some are positioned on ceremonial platforms called ahu, while others are scattered across the island’s landscapes. The mystery surrounding the construction and transportation of these incredible moai statues continues to intrigue archaeologists and visitors to this day. UNIQUE CULTURE Easter Island’s isolated location has allowed it to develop a distinct Polynesian culture, and the island’s history is reflected in its art, language and traditions. Visitors can immerse themselves in this unique culture through the enjoyment of local performances, crafts and interactions with island inhabitants. NATURAL BEAUTY Aside from its historical significance, Easter Island also offers stunning natural beauty. Pristine beaches, crater lakes, rugged coastlines and volcanic landscapes create a diverse and picturesque environment. The small island is easily explored, and the numerous hiking and biking routes all reveal incredible panoramas, along with clues to the intricately woven stories of the island’s past. Beautiful scenery, surprising secrets and remarkable history, this tiny island is like an open-air museum of incredible culture, archaeology and nature.

Santiago, Easter Island, Atacama Desert, the Winelands and Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia. HOW DID YOU GET THERE? I flew direct from London Heathrow to Santiago, and was lucky enough to fly Business Class which was a lovely treat. FAVOURITE LOCATION? I struggle to choose a favourite as they were all amazing, but if I have to then I’d say Patagonia. It’s just stunning – wide-open spaces and epic landscapes, and the mountain ranges really blow your mind, they’re much bigger than you imagine. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT? I have two that were equally as memorable: watching the sunrise over the moai statues on Easter Island was a really beautiful moment. And watching the sunrise over the Moon Valley in the Atacama Desert was equally incredible – cold, but incredible. Seeing the salt mountains change colour as the sun rose over the Andes is really something pretty special. BEST HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE? Horse riding through the beautiful vineyards of the Central Valley region and then heading straight on to an amazing wine-tasting experience. It was all just idyllic. WHAT DO YOU MOST RECOMMEND PACKING? Make sure you pack for all seasons! You can go from hot weather in the north and central regions to the cold and ice of Patagonia in the south. FAVOURITE FOOD AND DRINK? The wine in the Central Valley was lovely. My favourite was a pinot noir from Matetic Vineyards. My best meal was in Patagonia, the lamb was absolutely gorgeous – so tender and tasty. FAVOURITE PHOTO YOU TOOK? Easter Island moai statues. SUM UP YOUR TRIP IN THREE WORDS: Exciting – Epic – Incredible!

Although smaller than its Argentinian counterpart, Chilean Patagonia boasts just as many iconic and spectacular sites, and there’s certainly never any doubt that it’s just as beautiful. In the north is the Lake District, where emerald lakes, snow-capped volcanoes and lush forests create a serene natural retreat. Moving southward along the Austral Highway, adventurers are then treated to a remote and untamed experience, where dramatic fjords, glaciers and pristine rivers unfurl in an epic journey. At the heart of Chilean Patagonia lies Torres del Paine National Park, a world-renowned haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Its iconic granite spires, the Torres, command the skyline, while glaciers, lakes and windwhipped plains form a mosaic of natural wonders. Hiking trails cater to all skill levels, with treks ranging from leisurely strolls to challenging multiday adventures. The W Trek and the O Circuit Trek are particularly renowned, leading intrepid explorers through awe-inspiring terrains. Chilean Patagonia is also synonymous with pristine waterways, offering thrilling opportunities for expedition cruising, kayaking, canoeing, and even CHILEAN PATAGONIA A realm of untamed beauty and rugged icy landscapes, Patagonia beckons adventurers with its extraordinary and breathtaking wilderness.

ice kayaking through glacier-carved fjords. The Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the world’s third-largest freshwater reserve, feeds numerous glaciers, including the impressive Grey Glacier. The region’s epic landscapes serve as a magnificent backdrop for observing wildlife such as guanacos and foxes to elusive pumas and soaring condors. In addition to its natural splendours, Patagonia harbours a sense of isolation that encourages a deep connection with the environment. Remote lodges and cosy estancias provide rustic yet comfortable accommodations, allowing travellers to immerse themselves in nature’s raw beauty while enjoying warm Chilean hospitality. Those not wanting to stay within the bounds of the national park can enjoy the convenience of the charming gateway town of Puerto Natales. The region’s unpredictable weather adds to its mystique, with rapid shifts between sun, wind and rain shaping both the landscape and visitor experiences. This unpredictable climate accentuates the need for careful planning and preparation, enhancing the sense of adventure that defines a journey to Chilean Patagonia. - Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - CHILE | 65

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - 66 | CHILE THE AUSTRAL HIGHWAY The Austral Highway, or Carretera Austral, is a legendary road that winds through the remote and stunning landscapes of Chilean Patagonia. Spanning approximately 770 miles, this gravel and paved route traverses some of the most pristine regions of southern Chile, offering travellers an unparalleled journey through nature’s marvels. A REMARKABLE JOURNEY Starting from Puerto Montt in the Lake District, the Austral Highway cuts through dense forests, follows the contours of fjords, and skirts along glistening rivers. The road’s rugged charm and wild beauty make it a magnet for adventurers seeking an off-thebeaten-path experience, and the charming villages and settlements that the route passes through offer fascinating insight into the lives of those who call this remote region home. Highlights along the Austral Highway include the awe-inspiring Queulat National Park. Here, the Ventisquero Colgante (hanging glacier) captivates visitors with its icy mass suspended precariously on a mountainside. Continuing south leads to the mesmerising turquoise hues of the Marble Caves in General Carrera Lake, a natural wonder formed by centuries of water erosion, which has created a breathtaking and surreal visual spectacle. EXTRAORDINARY LANDSCAPES The region’s numerous glaciers, dense forests and pristine lakes showcase the raw power of nature in its most unfiltered form. This extraordinary journey passes through a variety of landscapes, including the vast Patagonian Steppe and towering mountains, often shrouded in mist, while the experience of crossing rickety wooden bridges and taking ferries that navigate the fjords further enhances the sense of adventure and remoteness. Travelling the Austral Highway demands a sense of independence and adaptability due to its changing conditions and the scarcity of amenities along the way. However, this very sense of adventure is part of what makes the journey so remarkable. A self-drive along the Austral Highway promises an unforgettable expedition through the heart of Chilean Patagonia’s spectacular landscapes. Passing dramatic, ever-changing and always beautiful landscapes, a journey down this extraordinary highway through lesser-seen Patagonia is an experience unlike any other.

- Contact our Latin America Travel Specialists on 0208 546 6222 or visit your local travel agent - CHILE | 67 A PATAGONIA GUIDE A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THIS JOB? I’ve always loved the outdoors – being in the mountains, climbing, skiing, anything outside! I’m from Northern Chile, so being in such an extreme latitude and so far from home was exciting, but more than anything I wanted to see these amazing landscapes that had attracted so many explorers before me. HOW DOES A TYPICAL DAY START? It always starts by looking at the beautiful Almirante Nieto Mountain. Then after breakfast I meet my day’s guests. I get to know everyone a bit first, do a briefing, then lead them on an amazing excursion!! FAVOURITE THING ABOUT PATAGONIA? It has to be the people I meet – so many different life stories, backgrounds and experiences. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT The wildlife encounters; they can make your whole week. Seeing pumas for example, or deer that jump right into your path. BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF YOUR ROLE? Meeting guests’ expectations. Sometimes the weather, or even their fitness, can make it hard to ensure they get the experience they imagined. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE WOULD-BE VISITORS? Bring layers! You can get all four seasons in one day, so be prepared. I also recommend training/getting fit for the hikes; some are quite demanding. Hiking poles are a great help too. FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR, & ANY TIPS FOR WHEN TO VISIT PATAGONIA? For sure the end of March/ beginning of April. The colours as the seasons change are breathtaking. The weather is also more predictable, and less windy. It may be a bit colder than summer, but it’s worth it. Plus there are fewer tourists and more chances of seeing wildlife in a silence that only Patagonia can provide. Gabriel Mazuelos works as a hiking and horse riding guide in the mighty Torres del Paine National Park. He talked to us about what it’s like living and working in this incredible stretch of wilderness in Chilean Patagonia.

Buenos Aires, Iguazú, Puerto Madryn, Gaiman, El Calafate, El Chaltén HOW DID YOU GET THERE? A direct British Airways flight to Buenos Aires, then domestic flights with Aerolíneas Argentinas. FAVOURITE LOCATION? Everywhere was so different but I loved exploring the hiking trails of El Chaltén. The drive there from El Calafate was almost worth the visit alone, with spectacular scenery of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT? So many! One highlight was visiting the Welsh town of Gaiman. Being Welsh, I’ve always wanted to see this unique part of Argentina, and it was fascinating to see how much of the Welsh language and traditions have been preserved from the 19thcentury settlers. I was there for the annual Eisteddfod (Welsh cultural festival), which was a wonderful and very memorable experience. BEST HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE? The wildlife experiences on Peninsula Valdes were incredible. I saw so many southern right whales and their calves, hundreds of nesting penguins, as well as elephant seals, Patagonian rheas, armadillos and guanacos in abundance. It was definitely the most surprising destination I visited! WHAT DO YOU MOST RECOMMEND PACKING? Definitely pack for all weather! Layers are key for Patagonia. FAVOURITE FOOD AND DRINK? As a vegetarian, I was surprised how well I could eat in Argentina – the land of hearty steaks! I loved Fogón Asado (p.78), it’s a traditional asado experience with a modern twist, and it was excellent. As for the drinks, I’ll never get bored of the country’s excellent malbec. FAVOURITE PHOTO? Photos never seem to do the scenery justice, but my favourites are those from Los Glaciares National Park, where I spent a day on a boat visiting the spectacular Upsala and Spegazzini Glaciers. SUM UP YOUR TRIP IN THREE WORDS Diverse, surprising, beautiful.

WHEN TO GO FALKLAND ISLANDS Lying 300 miles east of Patagonia, surrounded by the South Atlantic, are the 700+ islands that make up the Falkland Islands archipelago, also known as the Islas Malvinas. Commonly visited as part of an Antarctic cruise expedition, these rugged, remote, wildlife-rich islands are well worth seeing on their own. With spectacular coastlines that range from deserted, pristine beaches to striking rugged cliffs, bleakly beautiful interior landscapes, enthralling history, multiple shipwreck and plane wreck sites and, of course, extraordinary and abundant wildlife, this remote and ruggedly beautiful wilderness has a lot to offer. Home to less than 4,000 people, most of whom live in the charming and colourful capital Stanley, these remote islands are instead ruled mostly by nature. And undeniably, wildlife is the Falklands’ biggest attraction, with dolphins and orcas that play offshore, bountiful and varied birdlife and vast colonies of penguins, elephants seals and blackbrowed albatrosses all to be easily found. But exploring these remote and isolated islands is equally rewarding, and with excellent walking and hiking trails, 4WD tours, fishing and visiting fascinating war relics, there are many ways to enjoy unravelling the wonder of these islands. If you want to get off the beaten track, the Falkland Islands are about as far as you can venture. And they won’t disappoint. With an average 1,500 cubic metres of water per second thunderously cascading down vertical drops of up to 80 metres, the 275 separate waterfalls that make up Iguazú Falls form as impressive a sight as you’d expect, easily earning its spot among the top three waterfalls in the world. AWE-INSPIRING VISTAS Around 75% of the falls are on the Argentinian side (p.80), which means the Brazilian side is where you’ll get the iconic and breathtaking panoramic views. There’s a network of walkways providing countless incredible viewpoints of this remarkable spectacle, which you’ll often find framed by rainbows – just for that further touch of magic. It’s also well worth crossing over to the Argentinian side where there are walkways that take you excitingly close to these powerful falls. You can easily do day trips over to the Argentinian side and return to Brazil, or continue your holiday from there. SUBTROPICAL SURROUNDINGS While the falls are the main attraction, the surrounding subtropical rainforest that makes up the larger part of the Iguazú National Park is no less impressive. Home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, it’s simply teeming with birds and butterflies as well as a wealth of other wildlife, including rare and endangered species such as the giant otter and giant anteater. For the ultimate Iguazú immersion, you can stay in the iconic Belmond Hotel das Cataratas (p.106) – one of only two hotels in the national park, and the only one in Brazil’s side. Another must-visit nearby is the Parque des Aves, one of the best bird sanctuaries and shelters in Latin America where you can meet the likes of toucans, parrots, scarlet ibis, harpy eagles and owls. SALVADOR One of Brazil’s oldest cities, Salvador is the undoubted centrepiece of this fascinating and beautiful state. Once the centre of Portugal’s African slave trade, there’s nowhere in the world that reflects this heritage quite so well. It’s the African influence that undoubtedly dominates, but the result is a vibrant melting pot of Brazilian, African and Portuguese heritage and culture that give the city an energy and historic beauty that few Brazilian cities can match. Full of brightly coloured buildings, historic churches and colonial architecture that line cobblestone streets, the city’s pretty backdrop is an undeniable part of its charm, but it’s the city’s culture that really brings it to life. Food, music, carnivals, not to mention capoeira – a traditional dancestyle martial art originally developed by slaves – all play a very big part in life here, and between the laid-back cafes, atmospheric restaurants, lively bars and bustling plazas where you’ll see it all play out, it’s easy to pass a number of days happily soaking in the unique atmosphere of this vibrant city. IDYLLIC COASTLINE Head beyond the city and you’ll find over 550 miles of glorious tropical coastline, much of it remarkably empty but for nodding palm trees and the occasional nesting turtle. Sleepy fishing villages, livelier beach towns or upmarket resorts with boutique hotels can all be found along the coast, offering great opportunities to relax and enjoy a taste of laid-back Brazilian life. Praia do Forte, Trancoso and Itacaré are all popular options, all of which have a good selection of places to stay. CHAPADA DIAMANTINA Inland, a short flight or longer drive from Salvador, you’ll find the spectacular Chapada Diamantina National Park, with its dramatic canyons, flat-topped mountains, forested valleys, crystalline lakes, beautiful waterfalls and caves hiding exquisite iridescent pools. A wonderful hiking destination, you can explore on day trips from Lençóis, a laid-back old mining town that is the main access point and which provides a great base, or venture further into the park on an overnight camping trip. BAHIA Don’t Miss Take a capoeira class: learn the basics of this traditional, regionally important and hugely popular dance-like martial art.
