Beautiful towns full of opulent mansions, baroque churches, grand plazas and colourful buildings have each since developed their own unique characters, and they’re some of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities in Mexico to visit today. SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE Full of grand mansions, pretty churches, narrow cobbled streets and a towering pink neo-Gothic church, the UNESCO World Heritage city of San Miguel de Allende is an attractive and relaxed city that’s known for its thriving art scene and cultural festivals. You can also indulge in Mexico’s chocolaterich history here on a city chocolate tour, while just outside there are vineyards and wineries where you can enjoy some wine tasting. MORELIA Full of grand 17th- and 18th-century architecture built from the region’s characteristic pink stone, Morelia has a distinctly European feel with its wealth of outdoor cafes, wide leafy boulevards and impressive Baroque cathedral, all of which earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Nearby, on the shores of Lake Patzcuaro, is a traditional and charming town that’s home to the indigenous Purépecha community. And in the fir-forested hills between Morelia and Mexico City you can witness the amazing migration of monarch butterflies from November to March. GUANAJUATO One of Mexico’s most beautiful colonial cities, this colourful university town is a maze of cobbled streets, tunnels and churches, tree-filled plazas and small but fascinating museums, including the house that Diego Rivera once shared with Frida Kahlo. The pedestrian-only centre makes this city, which is a hub for music, theatre and dance, a joy to wander around. THE SILVER ROUTE It’s also possible to travel along a portion of the historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, known as the Silver Route. Stretching for 1,590 miles between Mexico City and New Mexico in the USA, it was used as a trade route for silver for 300 years, and can be explored starting from either San Miguel de Allende or Guanajuato. Mexico’s colonial past is a distinctive part of its character, with cities and towns across the country bearing witness to the 300-year period in which the Spanish ruled.
