Houdini’s Secret Belt.

Houdini varied his methods from time to time, for he
knew that at nearly every performance someone would
try to ferret out some of his secrets ; therefore, he did not
always make use of the same device for getting out of his
difficulties. If he knew that he was not going to be
thoroughly searched by experts before giving his
performance he would use a belt of his own design in
which various fakes were at hand. It will be seen—if the
reader will turn to the diagram—that the fakes were
suspended on a narrow belt running round the top of the
trousers by means of bull-dog clips. The various tools
were then hidden by two flaps, of the same material as the
trousers, and the flaps were kept in position, hiding the
secret belt, by the ordinary trousers-belt; the lower fold
of the shirt helped to hide the secret belt. In this way
Houdini was able to get any fake he wanted in half a
second, and some of his most sensational escapes were
managed in this way.

Buried Alive.

I give two versions—one for stage use and one for
performance in the open air—of the sensational illusion
in which the magician or his assistant is buried alive.

In the former the performer makes use of a glass casket
into which the assistant steps. The casket can be
thoroughly examined and after the assistant is stretched
out inside it and the lid has been placed in position the
Committee from the audience can seal up the casket with
paper. The casket is then air-tight.

The assistant remains in this perilous position for
about twenty minutes, during which time the performer
patters to the audience on the difficulty and danger of the
feat.

As a matter of fact, there is no “ trick ” about it. Note
the size of the casket. The assistant has been trained to
breathe slowly, and there is sufficient air in the casket to
last her for twenty minutes. The feat appears very
difficult and dangerous, but it is really easy and simple.
However, it is the effect that is important—not the method
of bringing it about.

The second version—for performance in the open air—
is explained by the accompanying picture. The performer

reclines in a coffin which is lowered into a grave ; the earth
is filled in.

Now note the details. Before the earth is thrown on
the coffin some planks are laid down. These planks rest
on the sides of the coffin and therefore take the weight of

The end of the coffin is fairly loose. The performer
kicks out the board at the end and also kicks through a
narrow wall of earth. The performer then knows that he
is safe, because on the other side of the little wall of earth
there is a tunnel which leads to a tree, the trunk of which
has been hollowed out and pierced with holes. The
performer may not be very comfortable when he has found
his way to the tree, but at any rate he can breathe !

Shooting Through a Woman.

For this sensational feat the performer uses a cross-bow
and two arrows. To prove that the bow works in the
usual way the performer fires an arrow at the target on
the stage. The lady then steps in front of the target and
the performer fires another arrow which apparently passes
right through the lady and fixes itself into the target.

Is it necessary to explain that the performer does not
do what he appears to do ? The second arrow is retained
in the cross-bow ; this arrow is telescopic ; even the head
folds up. The details of the mechanism of the trigger are
shown in the accompanying illustrations.

The arrow which appears to pass through the lady is
really shot from her belt, worn under the dress. A metal
plate, with a little spring gun, is attached to the belt. The
illustrations show how the assistant releases the arrow and
gives the impression, by means of a piece of ribbon, that
it has passed through her body.
