The Devil’s Stove.

This illusion was invented by Chefalo, who has presented
it many times and always with great success.

The effect of the illusion is shown in the accompanying
illustrations. The performer opens the door of the stove
and shows flames burning brightly within it. (This first
effect is produced by means of red electric lamps).

The door of the stove is closed and the fun begins.
From a small aperture in the top of the door emerge ducks
and fowls. After they have been shepherded out of the
way the door of the stove is opened and the stove is seen
to be empty. Then the door is opened again, revealing
the devil himself! (To save misunderstanding, I may
say that that statement is not to be believed, but the
figure who appears is a lifelike representation of the
“ original.”)

Now for the working, which is shown in the diagrams.
The assistant is in the stove at the beginning of the
performance, and he is concealed behind an inner lining
which revolves. The livestock are hidden in the top of
the stove. To cause the appearance of the fowls and
ducks the performer merely has to release the trap in the
top of the stove and the birds fly out of the little door at
