Owen’s Clark’s Watch Trick.

One of the best of the many good things invented by
the late Owen Clark was a device for exchanging a borrowed
watch for a dummy. The exchange was very subtle and
was worked suddenly, when the audience were not expecting
it. There appeared to be a slight accident and, in the
fraction of a second, the borrowed watch was safely
deposited in a servante at the back of the table and a
dummy—which the audience were always convinced was
the borrowed watch—dropped on the floor. It was
impossible to detect the change—unless, of course, one
knew exactly what to expect, and even then the working
of the change was hidden. You saw what you knew had
happened, but not how it happened.

The performer borrowed a watch, wrapped it in paper,
and asked the owner himself to place it on the top of a
candlestick on the table. If the owner wished to do so
he could unwrap the parcel, to make sure that it contained
his watch, before he placed it on the candlestick.

The performer then asked the owner of the watch if
he would have a cigar. A box of cigars was on the table.

The performer leaned over to get the box and then the
“ accident ” happened. The candlestick toppled over and
the audience apparently saw—and heard—the borrowed
watch fall to the floor. But the borrowed watch was safe
enough; the thing on the floor was the “ dummy.”

If the reader will now turn to the diagrams he will see
what really happened. The pillar of the candlestick was
connected with a thread to the box of cigars on the table.
The candlestick was also hinged to the table. Under the
candlestick was a thread which was passed through the
table, round two pulleys and so to a pin. Thus, directly
the performer moved the box of cigars the candlestick fell
over—apparently accidentally—, and as the base was
raised the thread under it withdrew the pin and allowed
a faked packet to fall to the floor.

Simultaneously the borrowed watch fell into a well
in the table and so into a little “ shoot ” which deposited
it safely in a bag servante at the back of the table. The
exchange was made so naturally and so quickly that it
invariably baffled everyone.

Of course, when a magician has secretly exchanged a
borrowed watch for a dummy he can bring his trick to
any conclusion that pleases him—as long as he hands the
borrowed watch to its owner at the end !

branded as a cheap imitator ; fellow magicians treated him
with contempt, and before very long he was content to
appear at second and even third-rate music halls.

Strangely enough, Rowland’s activities on the Continent
only served to enhance Goldin’s reputation. Rowland
copied some of Goldin’s illusions pretty faithfully, but he
failed to perform them in anything like the polished style
of Goldin. When Goldin toured Germany, the public at
once fell to comparing the two men, and to Rowland’s
disadvantage. Even had Rowland been anything like
a worthy magician, Goldin who, as an inventor was capable
of creating new illusions as soon as the old were over­
imitated, need never have feared him.

But apart from establishing himself as a new force
in magic, Goldin’s premiere« at the Palace was of inestim­
able service to the magical profession as a whole. I have
already referred to the “ turn money ” of £20 per week.
This was the sum paid to the world’s finest magicians; the
smaller fry had to be content with money that to-day
would be sniffed at by a stage-hand. The truth was that

The Vanishing Lamp.

Happy the magician who has a comedian in his
company ! An assistant who knows how to extract a
few laughs from an audience will be very useful in the
presentation of this trick. The effect is over so quickly
that the trick will bear a little padding out, if that work
is done nicely.

A lady assistant comes on the stage carrying a lamp on
a tray; she advances to the performer and to his comedian
assistant and the two men hold a large handkerchief in
front of the lamp. The handkerchief is there for about
two seconds ; then the performer snatches it away and
shows that the lamp has vanished.

The explanation is simple enough. The comedian-
assistant stands with his left hand on the lapel of his coat;
he holds the corner of the handkerchief with his right
hand; at least, that is the effect produced on the minds
of the audience, but, as a matter of fact, the left arm is a
dummy. The real arm goes through a slit in the back of
the coat, and thus the comedian is able to snatch the lamp
from the tray and hold it behind his back. Nothing could
be easier !

Chefalo’s Umbrella Trick.

This version of the umbrella trick is so different
from the one known to most conjurers that it is practically
a new trick. The usual plan is to cause some hand­
kerchiefs (belonging to the performer) to change places with
the cover of an umbrella, the handkerchiefs being shown
attached to the end of the ribs of the umbrella. The
next stage of the trick is, to my mind, an anti-climax, for
instead of leaving well alone the conjurer goes on to make
the handkerchiefs and umbrella cover again change places,
when the cover is once more seen on the umbrella and the
handkerchiefs have returned to their original place.
Chefalo does not make that mistake; he is wisely content
with one good effect, and he has worked it up to such a
pitch of perfection that, to an ordinary audience it seems
that the impossible has happened.

Chefalo uses half a dozen handkerchiefs borrowed from
the audience, and he does not use any confederates.
Further, he shows a perfectly sound umbrella to a girl from
the audience (whom he has induced to come on the stage
to help him) and this girl rolls up the genuine umbrella
and hands it to the performer. Yet, although everything
seems to the audience to be perfectly fair, square, and
above board the change takes place.
