A Smoke Mystery.

When the magician lights a Bryant and May’s book
match, holds it under his chin, and then proceeds to expel
smoke from his mouth the audience naturally open their
eyes wide and stare. Perhaps they would not be so curious
if they knew the simple secret of this little trick. A
glance at the illustrations shows what happens. The
magician secretly draws the smoke from the match through
his nose and openly puffs it out of his mouth. And that
is all there is to it.

turned up and the audience see that the bottle has dis­
appeared. If he wishes to do so the performer can leave
the trick at that stage, but I think the better plan is to

Standing on the stage is a four-legged table with a very
thin top; the performer holds a large cloth over the table
for the fraction of a second and then, whisking the cloth
away, shows a large bird-cage on the table.

The trick, of course, is purely mechanical; the cage
packs down into the top of the table and is then covered
with a piece of black cloth. The cloth has a slit in the
centre through which passes the ring at the top of the
cage. The performer merely has to get hold of the ring,
under cover of his cloth, and pull the cage upwards into
position. The cloth which served as a table cover is taken
away under cover of the performer’s cloth.

The simple mechanism of the cage is clearly shown
in the accompanying diagrams.

Goldston’s Weighing Illusion.

The effect of this sensational illusion is shown in the
accompanying illustrations. Suspended in the centre of
the stage is a small trapeze, and hanging to the bar is a
large weighing machine. A girl gets into a net basket and
is hauled up to the trapeze ; the handles of the basket are
then placed over the hook on the weighing machine, and
the audience see the pointer on the machine swing round,
indicating the weight of the assistant.

A small curtain is then dropped from the top of the
trapeze over the basket. When the audience have been
worked up to a proper state of excitement the performer
fires his revolver and simultaneously the front curtain
drops to the stage, the empty basket also falls, and the
hand on the weighing machine swings round, showing that
the girl has disappeared completely.

I now direct the reader’s attention to the diagrams.
He will see that the trapeze is fitted with a curtain at the
back and that this curtain matches the black cloth of the
stage. In the lower part of this curtain there is a slit
which is not noticed, because of the striped pattern of the
curtain. When the front curtain is dropped the girl steps
through the slit and on to a trapeze behind the striped

and assistants work the rest of the illusion—the falling
