LAJIWIN @ JOVINIA BT KUDUN PENGGUNAAN KIT “KEK BPKRLD” DALAM MENINGKATKAN PENGUASAAN KATA GANDA SEPARA DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 2 ABSTRAK Penyelidikan tindakan ini dijalankan bertujuan untuk membantu meningkatkan penguasaan kata ganda separa dalam kalangan murid tahun 2. Tindakan awal melalui analisis dokumen mendapati murid-murid mempunyai masalah apabila diminta mengisi dengan kata ganda separa berdasarkan kata dasar yang diberi. Hal ini menyebabkan murid-murid sering keliru semasa menulis sesuatu perkataan dalam penulisan. Sebuah kit yang bertajuk Kek BPKRLD yang melibatkan pengandaan kata dasar b, p, k, r, l dan d telah digunakan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kemahiran tatabahasa iaitu kata ganda separa. Data dikutip dan dianalisis menggunakan dua instrumen iaitu analisis dokumen dan ujian formatif. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan penggunaan kit “ Kek BPKRLD” dapat membantu meningkatkan penguasaan kata ganda separa dalam kalangan murid. Kesimpulannya, penggunaan kit “ Kek BPKRLD” dapat membantu meningkatkan kata kata ganda separa dalam kalangan murid. NICOLE HII CHIANG HEE NAMA PENYELIA: DR. CAROLINE @ LORENA DAVID KEBERKESANAN KIT MUKA TANDA BACA DALAM MENINGKATKAN PENGGUNAAN TANDA BACA DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 3 ABSTRAK Penyelidikan tindakan ini dilaksanakan untuk mengkaji keberkesanan Kit Muka Tanda Baca dalam meningkatkan penggunaan tanda baca dalam kalangan murid tahun 3. Masalah tersebut dibuktikan melalui kajian yang dilaksanakan oleh Anne dan Saidatul mendapati 196 kesalahan koma dan 103 kesalahan noktah daripada 66 hasil karangan (Anne & Saidatul, 2020). Tambahan pula, kajian yang dilaksanakan oleh Fitri, Indah dan Rama mendapati bahawa peratusan kesalahan tanda noktah dalam penulisan adalah sebanyak 80% (Fitri, Indah & Rama, 2018). Kedua-dua kajian tersebut menunjukkan bahawa penguasaan tanda baca yang lemah semasa sekolah rendah menyebabkan kekeliruan sehingga tahap pengajian tinggi. Selain itu, murid sekolah rendah menghadapi kekeliruan tanda baca dari aspek nama, fungsi dan pengaplikasian dalam penulisan dapat dibukti melalui tinjauan yang dijalankan dengan kumpulan sasarannya dari Sarawak, Negeri Sembilan dan Pahang yang menunjukkan punca adalah murid-murid keliru tentang pengetahuan asas membaca dan menulis, persekitaran dan kaedah pengajaran guru (Abdul, 2011). Reka bentuk kajian ini menggunakan penyelidikan kuantitatif dengan menggunakan Sampel Rawak Mudah melalui instrumen Ujian Diagnostik, Ujian Pra, Ujian Intervensi, Ujian Pos dan Borang senarai semak untuk pemerhatian. Oleh itu, kit Muka Tanda Baca merupakan sesuatu alat yang memerlukan murid menyusun tempat tanda baca sebagai pancaindera muka selepas mendengar cerita yang diselitkan unsur tanda baca untuk mengukuhkan ingatan dan pemahaman murid terhadap pengaplikasian tanda baca dalam penulisan. Data yang dianalisis menunjukkan kit dan teknik tersebut berkesan dalam mencapai objektif kajian. Tuntasnya, peserta kajian lebih mudah mengingat dan memahami penggunaan tanda baca dalam penulisan melalui pengaplikasian Kit Muka Tanda Baca melalui Teknik Bercerita. CAROLINE @ LORENA DAVID PENGGUNAAN KIT IBU JARI UNTUK MEMBANTU MURID TAHUN 1 MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN MENGENAL HURUF B DAN D ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini dijalankan untuk mengatasi masalah kekeliruan dalam membezakan huruf b dan d menggunakan Kit Ibu Jari. Kit Ibu Jari ini dipilih kerana ia mudah digunakan, tidak menggunakan kos yang tinggi, bersifat maujud dan lebih berkesan. Kajian ini melibatkan 8 orang peserta kajian Tahun 1 yang mempunyai tahap pencapaian akademik yang rendah dan sederhana, dari sebuah sekolah di daerah Tamparuli, Sabah. Data kajian ini dikumpulkan melalui ujian diagnostik, pemerhatian, temubual, analisis dokumen, ujian pra dan ujian pos. Pengkaji telah menggunakan kaedah bercampur untuk menganalisis data kajian ini iaitu, kaedah kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Sebelum intervensi dilaksanakan, data ujian pra yang dikumpul menunjukkan kelapan-lapan peserta kajian sukar membezakan huruf kecil b dan d semasa menulis. Selepas intervensi dijalankan, peserta kajian menunjukkan peningkatan yang positif semasa menulis perkataan yang mengandungi huruf b dan d. Kesimpulannya, hasil analisis data-data yang dikumpul membuktikan bahawa penggunaan Kit Ibu Jari dapat membantu dalam mengatasi kekeliruan membezakan huruf b dan d dalam kalangan murid Tahun 1. CAROLINE @ LORENA DAVID MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN PENGGUNAAN KATA SENDI NAMA ‘DARI’ DAN ‘DARIPADA’ MENGGUNAKAN KIT MATBOS DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 2 ABSTRAK Kemahiran aspek tatabahasa perlu dititikberatkan sebagaimana kemahiran yang lain kerana ia melengkapkan lagi kemampuan dan kecekapan seseorang murid dalam berbahasa. Pengajaran tatabahasa bahasa Melayu perlulah mengikut prinsip yang betul bagi mengelakkan kekeliruan penggunaan kata sendi nama. Hal ini kerana kebanyakan murid masih tidak ada pengetahuan tentang penggunaan kata sendi nama yang tepat. Kajian tindakan ini berfokus kepada meningkatkan kemahiran penggunaan kata sendi nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’ dengan menggunakan kit MATBOS. Kajian ini tertumpu kepada enam orang murid sebagai peserta kajian di salah sebuah sekolah rendah jenis kebangsaan Cina yang terletak di daerah Tuaran. Tinjauan awal mendapati murid keliru tentang penggunaan kata sendi nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’ dengan betul. Kit MATBOS yang dihasilkan berfungsi sebagai bimbingan dan panduan untuk murid menggunakan kata sendi nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’ dengan betul dalam pembinaan ayat. Kaedah pengumpulan data adalah melalui beberapa instrumen, iaitu analisis dokumen, temu bual, pemerhatian serta ujian pra dan ujian pos. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahawa berlaku peningkatan dalam kemahiran penggunaan kata sendi nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’ setelah kit MATBOS diperkenalkan. CAROLINE @ LORENA DAVID KIT ‘MATAPO’: MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN MEMBEZAKAN KATA SENDI NAMA ‘DARI’ DAN ‘DARIPADA’ DALAM KALANGAN MURID SJK(C) ABSTRAK Kajian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemahiran murid di SJK(C) dalam membezakan Kata Sendi Nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’. Kumpulan sasaran kajian ini melibatkan 5 orang murid Tahap 2 dari SJK(C) di daerah Tuaran, Sabah dan di Kuching, Sarawak. Fokus kajian saya adalah menilai sejauh mana penggunaan bahan bantu mengajar, iaitu Kit “MATAPO” dapat membantu dalam mengurangan kesalahan penggunaan Kata Sendi Nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’ serta merangsang minat dan keyakinan murid dalam mempelajari Kata Sendi Nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’. Tinjauan awal mendapati majoriti murid di SJK(C) mengalami kekeliruan dalam penggunaan Kata Sendi Nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’ dan mereka kurang berminat untuk mempelajari Kata Sendi Nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’. Instrumen kajian ini menggunakan markah pencapaian ujian pra dan ujian pos, pemerhatian serta borang soal selidik. Pengkaji menggunakan teknik deskriptif untuk menganlisis item-item daripada senarai semak pemerhatian, borang soal selildik yang diedarkan kepada peserta kajian dan keputusan yang diperoleh daripada ujian pra serta ujian pos. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan prestasi peserta kajian dalam ujian pos lebih baik dengan perolehan min purata 100 peratus berbanding dengan ujian pra yang mendapat min purata 42 peratus. Implikasi dapatan kajian ini membuktikan bahawa penggunaan Kit “MATAPO” telah berjaya membantu murid SJK(C) dalam membezakan Kata Sendi Nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’ serta merangsang minat dan meningkatkan keyakinan mereka dalam mempelajari Kata Sendi Nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’. Oleh itu, disarankan supaya penggunaan Kit “MATAPO” diteruskan pada masa akan datang sebagai bahan bantu mengajar untuk mengajar penggunaan Kata Sendi Nama ‘dari’ dan ‘daripada’. CAROLINE @ LORENA DAVID MENINGKATKAN PENGUASAAN HURUF BESAR DAN TANDA TITIK MENGGUNAKAN TEKNIK BETIK BULAT BAGI MURID TAHUN 4 ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini dijalankan bertujuan untuk memperbaiki kelemahan murid dalam menguasai kemahiran penggunaan huruf besar pada awal ayat dan tanda titik pada akhir ayat bagi penulisan bahasa Melayu menggunakan teknik BETIK BULAT. Pengkaji telah menggunakan teknik ‘BETIK BULAT’ yang melibatkan penggunaan bulatan bagi mensifarkan kesalahan menulis huruf besar pada awal ayat dan tanda titik. Peserta kajian terdiri daripada lima orang murid Tahun 4 di salah sebuah sekolah rendah daerah Tuaran yang memperoleh markah yang terendah dalam ujian diagnostik bahasa Melayu yang dijalankan. Model kajian tindakan yang digunakan adalah berdasarkan model Kurt Lewin (1946). Data dikumpulkan melalui pemerhatian, ujian penilaian iaitu ujian diagnostik dan ujian pencapaian, analisis dokumen dan soal selidik. Data-data yang diperoleh telah dianalisis secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan teknik BETIK BULAT dapat meningkatkan penguasaan huruf besar pada awal ayat dan tanda titik pada akhir ayat. Kesimpulannya, keputusan analisis datadata yang telah dikumpul membuktikan bahawa penggunaan teknik BETIK BULAT dapat meningkatkan penguasaan huruf besar pada awal ayat dan tanda titik pada akhir ayat. CHIN SATT FUNG MENINGKATKAN PENGGUNAAN HURUF BESAR, KOMA DAN NOKTAH MENGGUNAKAN LAMPU 3 WARNA ABSTRAK Kajian Tindakan ini dijalankan untuk membantu murid Tahun 3 bagi meningkatkan penggunaan huruf besar, koma dan noktah dengan menggunakan Lampu 3 Warna. Kajian ini telah dilaksanakan terhadap lima orang murid Tahun 3 di salah sebuah sekolah yang berada di daerah Tamparuli, Sabah. Peserta kajian ini telah dipilih berdasarkan pemerhatian yang dilakukan terhadap beberapa hasil tugasan mereka. Tinjauan awal mendapati bahawa peserta kajian boleh membina ayat namun mengabaikan tanda baca huruf besar, tidak mengetahui dimana perlu meletakkan koma dan mengakhiri ayat tanpa noktah. Pengkaji telah menjalankan kajian ini dengan berorientasikan kepada Model Penyelidikan Model Kurt Lewin (1948). Model kajian ini telah dipilih oleh pengkaji berdasarkan beberapa faktor. Data bagi kajian ini telah dikumpulkan oleh pengkaji melalui beberapa kaedah seperti ujian penilaian iaitu ujian pra dan ujian pos serta pemerhatian. Pengkaji juga telah menganalisis data-data yang dikumpulkan secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Hasil dapatan kajian telah menunjukkan bahawa terdapat peningkatan kemahiran dan prestasi bagi semua peserta kajian selepas tindakan dijalankan. Peserta kajian dapat mengenalpasti kesalahan tanda baca dalam petikan dan menyalin semula petikan dengan tanda baca yang betul. Kesimpulannya, keputusan daripada analisis data-data yang telah dikumpulkan telah membuktikan bahawa penggunaan Lampu 3 Warna ini berkesan dalam membantu murid dalam menghasilkan penulisan ayat dengan betul bagi mata pelajaran Bahasa Melayu. CHIN SATT FUNG MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN MEMBINA AYAT BERDASARKAN GAMBAR DALAM KALANGAN MURID-MURID TAHUN 3 DENGAN MENGGUNAKAN KIT ZOOM IN ABSTRAK Penyelidikan tindakan ini dilaksanakan untuk mengkaji keberkesanan penggunaan Kit Zoom In yang berdasarkan rumus “Subjek + Perbuatan + Keterangan” dalam meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar dalam kalangan murid-murid Tahun 3. Pengkaji memperkenalkan rumus ini sebagai satu panduan kepada muridmurid dalam menghasilkan ayat berdasarkan gambar yang lengkap dan betul. Modal Tindakan Kurt Lewin (1948) digunakan dalam kajian ini. Terdapat lima orang peserta kajian dikenal pasti dalam kajian ini yang terdiri daripada seorang murid lelaki dan empat orang murid perempuan. Terdapat dua kaedah pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam kajian ini iaitu kaedah analisis dokumen dan pemerhatian. Pengkaji menjalankan kajian dengan memberikan tiga intervensi untuk meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar dengan kaedah ansur maju secara berperingkat. Reka bentuk kajian ini ialah menggunakan kaedah kuantitatif melalui instrument Ujian Pra, Ujian Pos dan borang senarai semak untuk pemerhatian. Data-data yang diperolehi telah dijelaskan secara deskriptif dan dapatan kajian pula dianalisis dalam bentuk penjadualan dan graf. Oleh itu, data yang dianalisis menunjukkan Kit Zoom In dan rumus yang diterapkan telah memberikan kesan yang baik serta mencapai objektif kajian. Kesimpulannya, peserta kajian mampu menguasai dan meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar selepas didedahkan dengan Kit Zoom In. Kajian tindakan ini bertujuan untuk membantu murid Tahun 2 meningkatkan kemahiran menulis huruf besar dan huruf kecil C, K, O, P dan S dengan Kit Dotted Line dengan menggunakan teknik latih tubi. Kajian ini melibatkan lima orang peserta kajian yang terdiri daripada murid Tahun 2 di sebuah Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJKC) di Sabah. Terdapat murid sebanyak 10 orang menduduki Ujian Diagnostik dan murid yang mendapat keputusan sederhana dan lemah dikenal pasti sebagai peserta kajian. Kajian tindakan ini bersandar kepada Model Kurt Lewin (1948). Instrumen ujian dan pemerhatian dikumpulkan sebagai data dan dianalisis secara kuantitatif. Melalui analisis data, terdapat peningkatan pencapaian dalam kemahiran menulis huruf besar dan huruf kecil bagi huruf C, K, O, P dan S dalam kalangan peserta kajian.Melalui kaedah pemerhatian, peserta kejian berjaya meingkatkan motivasi dalam kemahiran menulis huruf besar dan huruf kecil bagi huruf C. K, O, P dan S. Kepentingan kajian tindakan ini dapat membantu menguasai kemahiran menulis huruf besar dan huruf kecil bagi huruf C, K, O, P dan S dalam kalangan murid Tahun 2. Tuntasnya, Kit Dotted Line dengan menggunakan teknik latih tubi dapat membantu murid Tahun 2 membezakan dan menguasai kemahiran menulis huruf besar dan huruf kecil bagi huruf C, K, O, P dan S. CHIN SATT FUNG MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN MEMBINA AYAT BERDASARKAN GAMBAR DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 3 MELALUI KT PIZASAH ABSTRAK Kajian yang dijalankan ini bertujuan untuk menguji keberkesanan penggunaan Kit PizaSAH yang berasaskan dengan rumus teknik “SAH”, iaitu teknik “Subjek + Aktiviti + Huraian” bagi meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar dalam kalangan murid Tahun 3. Kajian ini juga bermatlamat untuk meningkatkan motivasi murid Tahun 3 bagi membina ayat yang lengkap berdasarkan gambar melalui Kit PizaSAH. Kajian ini merupakan satu kajian tindakan yang melibatkan lima orang murid Tahun 3 sebagai peserta kajian. Hasil tinjauan awal, peserta kajian yang dikenal pasti tersebut didapati menghadapi masalah dalam kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar. Semasa menjalankan kajian ini, pengkaji menggunakan dua kaedah pengumpulan data, iaitu ujian pencapaian dan pemerhatian. Bagi kaedah ujian pencapaian, pengkaji menggunakan Ujian Pra dan Ujian Pos untuk mengumpul data tentang tahap penguasaan peserta kajian terhadap kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar. Bagi kaedah pemerhatian pula, pengkaji menggunakan borang senarai semak bagi menilai tahap motivasi peserta kajian sebelum dan selepas Kit PizaSAH diperkenalkan dan tindakan dijalankan. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh menggunakan kaedah ujian pencapaian, pengkaji mendapati bahawa penguasaan peserta kajian dalam kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar semakin meningkat. Sehubungan itu, analisis pemerhatian melalui borang senarai semak juga mendapati bahawa berlakunya perubahan yang positif terhadap tahap motivasi peserta kajian dalam kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar. Secara keseluruhannya, Kit PizaSAH berjaya membantu murid Tahun 3 untuk meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar, seterusnya meningkatkan lagi motivasi murid untuk membina ayat yang lengkap berdasarkan gambar. CHIN SATT FUNG KEBERKESANAN KIT ATMBOS DALAM MENINGKATKAN PENGUASAAN KATA SENDI NAMA “DARI” DAN “DARIPADA” MURID TAHUN 3 ABSTRAK Kekeliruan membezakan penggunaan KSN “dari” dan “daripada” merupakan salah satu punca yang menyebabkan sesuatu ayat yang digunakan tidak lancar dan gramatis. Kajian tindakan ini dijalankan untuk meningkatkan tahap penguasaan murid terhadap penggunaan KSN “dari” dan “daripada”. Selain itu, kajian ini juga dilaksanakan untuk meningkatkan motivasi peserta kajian belajar KSN “dari” dan “daripada”. Penggunaan Kit ATMBOS telah diaplikasikan dalam kajian ini bagi memastikan objektif kajian tercapai. Kajian tindakan ini dijalankan secara kuantitatif yang melibatkan seramai 5 orang peserta kajian yang terdiri daripada murid Tahun 3. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam kajian ini ialah ujian dan borang senarai semak. Ujian pra dilaksanakan bagi mengenal pasti tahap penguasaan peserta kajian terhadap KSN “dari” dan “daripada” sebelum intervensi dilaksanakan. Ujian pencapaian dilaksanakan bagi mengenal pasti peningkatan peserta kajian selepas Kit ATMBOS diperkenalkan kepada peserta kajian. Terdapat enam soalan telah disediakan dalam kedua-dua ujian tersebut. Peserta kajian perlu menjawab soalan berstruktur yang telah disediakan oleh pengkaji dalam ujian. Malah, terdapat lima item telah ditetapkan dalam borang senarai semak untuk memerhatikan motivasi peserta kajian sebelum dan selepas intervensi dijalankan. Dapatan kajian telah menunjukkan bahawa penggunaan Kit ATMBOS dapat meningkatkan tahap penguasaan murid terhadap penggunaan KSN “dari” dan “daripada” serta meningkatkan motivasi peserta kajian untuk belajar. Justeru, guru Bahasa Melayu perlu mengambil kira penggunaan alat bantu mengajar untuk menyampaikan ilmu pengetahuan agar murid dapat memahami, menerima dan mempelajari ilmu tersebut dengan jelas dan mudah. TIONG HONG KHIONG PERANAN GURU BAHASA MELAYU DALAM PENGURUSAN PEMBELAJARAN MURID BERMASALAH PEMBELAJARAN DI BILIK DARJAH INKLUSIF ABSTRAK Pengurusan pembelajaran murid berkeperluan pendidikan khas sangat penting bagi menentukan keberkesanan proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran (PdP) di bilik darjah inklusif. Namun begitu, guru aliran perdana kurang pengetahuan, kemahiran dan keupayaan dalam pengurusan pembelajaran murid sedemikian. Menyedari masalah ini, satu kajian kualitatif dijalankan bagi mengenalpasti peranan guru Bahasa Melayu (BM) dalam mengurus pembelajaran murid BP di kelas inklusif. Dua orang guru BM yang mengajar kelas inklusif di sekolah rendah Daerah Kudat dan Kota Marudu telah dipilih sebagai informan kajian melalui pensampelan bertujuan. Temu bual dan pemerhatian digunakan sebagai instrumen kajian ini. Data dianalisis secara tematik dan serentak semasa pengumpulan data. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa murid BP mempamerkan tingkah laku bermasalah dalam kelas inklusif. Pada masa yang sama, mereka dapat melibatkan diri secara aktif dalam bilik darjah inklusif dengan adanya pengurusan pembelajaran yang terancang. Dapatan kajian juga mendapati guru BM berperanan sebagai perancang, pengawal, rakan pembimbing, pendorong dan penilai dalam pengurusan pembelajaran murid. Keseluruhannya, dapatan kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa guru BM memikul pelbagai peranan dalam pengurusan pembelajaran murid bermasalah pembelajaran. TIONG HONG KHIONG PENGAPLIKASIAN TEKNIK HUKONOHU BAGI MENINGKATKAN PENGUASAAN PENGGUNAAN HURUF BESAR, KOMA DAN NOKTAH MURID TAHUN TIGA ABSTRAK Penyelidikan tindakan ini dijalankan untuk memperbaiki kelemahan murid dalam menggunakan tanda baca yang melibatkan huruf besar, koma dan noktah dalam penulisan bahasa Melayu melalui Teknik HuKoNoHu. Peserta kajian terdiri daripada lima orang murid di sebuah sekolah rendah di Sabah. Reka bentuk kajian yang dilaksanakan adalah berdasarkan Model Kemmis dan Mc Taggart (1988) yang mengutamakan empat proses kajian tindakan berdasarkan gelungan (circle), iaitu mereflek (reflect); merancang (plan); bertindak (action) dan memerhati (observe). Tinjauan awal telah dilaksanakan melalui pemerhatian berstruktur, analisis dokumen, ujian dan soal selidik. Hasil tinjauan awal menunjukkan murid tidak menguasai penggunaan ketiga-tiga tanda baca tersebut dalam penulisan. Melalui Teknik HuKoNoHu, pengkaji telah melaksanakan beberapa tindakan dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran bagi membantu murid menguasai penggunaan ketiga-tiga tanda baca berkenaan dengan baik. Dapatan melalui pemerhatian berstruktur dan soal selidik menunjukkan bahawa murid berminat dengan teknik yang diperkenalkan. Data analisis dokumen dan pencapaian murid dalam ujian akhir turut menunjukkan peningkatan penguasaan murid dalam menggunakan huruf besar, tanda koma dan tanda noktah dalam penulisan. Kesimpulannya, Teknik HuKoNoHu merupakan satu wadah yang mampu membantu murid-murid menguasai ketiga-tiga tanda baca tersebut dalam penulisan. Penggunaan tanda baca merupakan salah satu aspek yang dititikberatkan dalam kemahiran menulis. Kajian ini sememangnya bermanfaat kepada pengkaji bagi mencari tahu punca masalah ini berlaku dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran serta dapat mencari, seterusnya menguji penyelesaian atau kaedah terbaik bagi mengatasi masalah ini. TIONG HONG KHIONG MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN MEMBINA AYAT BERDASARKAN GAMBAR DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 3 DENGAN MENGGUNAKAN KIT CHECK-IN ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini bertujuan untuk menilai keberkesanan penggunaan Kit Check-In dalam meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar dalam kalangan murid Tahun Tiga. Kit Check-In yang dihasilkan dalam kajian ini adalah berdasarkan penerapan rumus “Subjek + Perbuatan + Keterangan”. Rumus ini digunakan dan diperkenalkan kepada murid-murid adalah untuk membantu murid-murid mengatasi masalah kelemahan membina ayat berdasarkan gambar. Rumus ini juga menjadi satu panduan kepada murid-murid untuk menghasilkan ayat yang lengkap dan betul berdasarkan gambar. Model yang digunakan dalam kajian ini ialah Model Tindakan Kurt Lewin (1948). Kajian ini melibatkan lima orang peserta kajian yang terdiri daripada seorang murid lelaki dan empat orang murid perempuan. Kaedah pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam kajian ini ialah keadah analisis dokumen, ujian pencapaian dan pemerhatian. Dalam pelaksanaan kajian, peserta kajian diberikan tiga intervensi untuk meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar dengan kaedah ansur maju secara berperingkat. Pengkaji menggunakan kaedah kualitatif dan kuantitatif untuk menganalisis data yang diperolehi. Data-data yang diperoleh telah dijelaskan secara deskriptif. Dapatan kajian yang didapati pula diterjemahkan dalam bentuk penjadualan dan graf. Berdasarkan data yang diperolehi, hasil pencapaian peserta kajian dalam dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa kesemua peserta kajian berkeupayaan menguasai dan meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar selepas pengenalan Kit Check-In. TIONG HONG KHIONG MENINGKATKAN PENGUASAAN AYAT TUNGGAL DENGAN PELUASAN PREDIKAT MELALUI KAEDAH SI BUDI BIJAK DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 6 ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini adalah mengenai penggunaan Kaedah Si BuDi Bijak dalam meningkatkan penguasaan murid Tahun 6 dalam ayat tunggal dengan peluasan predikat. Kajian tindakan ini dirancang dan dilaksanakan apabila pengkaji mendapati bahawa kebanyakan murid Tahun 6 menghadapi masalah dalam ayat tunggal dengan peluasan predikat. Peserta kajian bagi kajian tindakan ini adalah terdiri daripada 10 orang murid, iaitu enam orang murid lelaki dan empat orang murid perempuan yang mempunyai tahap pencapaian akademik yang berlainan. Sepuluh orang peserta kajian yang dipilih tersebut merupakan murid daripada sebuah sekolah rendah di daerah Tuaran, Sabah. Kajian tindakan ini dilaksanakan berasaskan Model Kurt Lewin (1948) yang merangkumi empat peringkat pelaksanaan kajian, iaitu perancangan, tindakan, pemerhatian dan refleksi. Kaedah pengumpulan data bagi kajian ini merupakan ujian diagnostik (Ujian Pra dan Ujian Pasca), analisis dokumen, pemerhatian dan soal selidik. Justeru itu, data yang dikumpul melalui keempat-empat kaedah tersebut diteliti dan dianalisis untuk membuktikan keberkesanan intervensi dalam mengatasi isu kajian. Berdasarkan data yang dianalisis, dapatan kajian telah membuktikan bahawa Kaedah Si BuDi Bijak dapat meningkatkan penguasaan ayat tunggal dengan peluasan predikat. Kajian selanjutnya dapat dibuat penambahbaikan melalui penambahan bahan digital seperti gamifikasi, elemen video dan elemen audio untuk memastikan intervensi yang dijalankan lebih menarik dan berkesan. TIONG HONG KHIONG PENGARUH SIKAP BAHASA TERHADAP PENCAPAIAN BAHASA MELAYU DALAM KALANGAN MURID SEKOLAH RENDAH DI SJK(C) ST PHILLIP, TAMPARULI ABSTRAK Kajian ini dilaksanakan bagi melihat pengaruh sikap bahasa terhadap pencapaian bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan murid sekolah rendah di SJK(C) St Phillip, Tamparuli. Objektif utama dalam kajian ini adalah mengenal pasti sama ada terdapat hubungan sikap bahasa yang terbahagi kepada tiga aspek iaitu afektif, tingkah laku dan kognitif dengan pencapaian bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan murid Tahun 4. Kajian ini yang dilakukan adalah kuantitatif melalui kaedah tinjauan. Maka, seramai 30 orang murid Tahun 4 di SJK(C) St Phillip, Tamparuli telah diambil sebagai sampel kajian ini bagi menjawab borang soal selidik dan ujian bahasa Melayu yang disediakan untuk mengumpul data-data berkenaan kajian ini. Kemudian, data-data yang diperolehi telah dianalisis dengan menggunakan statistik iaitu secara statistik Min, statistik Korelasi Pearson dan Regresi Linear Berganda. Dapatan kajian ini mendapati bahawa aspek-aspek dalam pemboleh ubah tak bersandar iaitu sikap kognitif, sikap tingkah laku dan sikap afektif mempunyai hubungan signifikan yang positif dengan pemboleh ubah bersandar iaitu pencapaian bahasa Melayu. Justeru, kajian ini juga membuktikan bahawa sikap bahasa murid mempunyai pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap pencapaian bahasa Melayu murid. Hal ini dapat dilihat di mana terdapat sebanyak 33% pengaruh sikap bahasa murid terhadap pencapaian bahasa Melayu mereka. CHIN SATT FUNG MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN DALAM MEMBINA AYAT MAJMUK BERDASARKAN BAHAN GRAFIK MENGGUNAKAN TEKNIK SI BATER DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 5 ABSTRAK Kemahiran menulis merupakan salah satu kemahiran yang sangat penting dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Melayu di sekolah rendah. Hasil daripada ujian pra yang dijalankan dalam pengumpulan data awal, murid-murid tahun 5 didapati mengalami masalah tidak dapat membina ayat majmuk berdasarkan bahan grafik dengan gramatis. Bukan itu sahaja, murid-murid tahun 5 mengambil masa yang lama untuk membina ayat majmuk. Mereka juga tidak dapat membina ayat majmuk tanpa bimbingan dan bantuan daripada guru. Oleh sebab itu, kajian tindakan ini dijalankan untuk meningkatkan tahap penguasaan kemahiran murid-murid tahun 5 membina ayat majmuk yang gramatis dan tidak mengambil masa yang lama serta yakin dalam membina ayat majmuk berdasarkan bahan grafik. Seramai lima orang murid tahun 5 telah dijadikan sebagai peserta kajian sepanjang tempoh kajian ini dilaksanakan. Data-data bagi kajian tindakan ini telah dikumpul melalui tiga jenis pengumpulan data, iaitu analisis dokumen, pemerhatian serta ujian diagnostik dan ujian pencapaian. Berdasarkan masalah yang dihadapi, teknik Si BATer telah digunakan untuk meningkatkan tahap penguasaan kemahiran murid-murid tahun 5 dalam membina ayat majmuk berdasarkan bahan grafik. Hasil dapatan kajian menunjukkan tahap penguasaan kemahiran dan keyakinan murid-murid tahun 5 dalam membina ayat majmuk berdasarkan bahan grafik meningkat setelah menggunakan teknik Si BATer. CHIN SATT FUNG TINGKAH LAKU DAN FAKTOR PENGARUH MEMBACA DALAM DIRI SEORANG MURID SEKOLAH RENDAH: SATU KAJIAN KES ABSTRAK Amalan membaca merupakan aspek yang amat penting dalam mempengaruhi pembentukan diri murid yang berilmu pengetahuan. Kajian kes ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji tingkah laku dan faktor pengaruh membaca dalam diri seorang murid sekolah rendah. Peserta kajian merupakan seorang murid tahun satu dari Sekolah Kebangsaan Tamu Darat, Kota Belud. Kajian dikendalikan di tempat tinggal peserta kajian dan latar belakang peserta kajian yang berkaitan digunakan untuk analisis kajian. Terdapat tiga objektif kajian iaitu memahami kaedah membaca yang digunakan oleh peserta kajian dalam mempelajari kemahiran membaca Bahasa Melayu, memahami faktor luaran dan faktor dalaman yang mempengaruhi tingkah laku dalam membaca Bahasa Melayu, dan memahami faktor-faktor lain yang mempengaruhi tingkah laku dalam membaca secara menyeluruh. Kajian ini dijalankan secara kualitatif dengan menggunakan kaedah pemerhatian, analisis dokumen dan temu bual. Pemerhatian dan analisis dokumen dijalankan secara holistik terhadap tingkah laku peserta kajian dalam aktiviti membaca dan terhadap pelbagai faktor yang mempengaruhinya. Temu bual pula dijalankan terhadap peserta kajian dan pihakpihak yang berkait rapat dengan peserta kajian dalam konteks membaca. Terdapat juga analisis kesalahan bacaan dan ejaan yang dilakukan. Hasil dapatan kajian mendapati bahawa peserta kajian menggunakan kaedah fonetik sebagai kaedah asas membaca. Antara faktor yang mempengaruhi tingkah laku membaca ialah faktor jenis buku, ruang yang kondusif, tempoh membaca, konsistensi, peluang membaca, motivasi intrinsik, ganjaran, cita rasa buku, keyakinan diri, emosi, faktor pembimbing, rakan sebaya, status sosioekonomi, budaya sekolah, dan teknologi. Oleh itu, hasil kajian diharapkan dapat menawarkan perspektif tentang tingkah laku dan faktor membaca dalam diri murid menerusi situasi sebenar. KONG NGUK FONG NAMA PENYELIA: PN. CHIN SATT FUNG KAEDAH MEKUHI MENINGKATKAN PENGUASAAN HURUF BESAR, HURUF KECIL DAN TANDA NOKTAH DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 2 ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini dijalankan untuk membantu murid Tahun 2 bagi meningkatkan kemahiran penggunaan huruf besar, huruf kecil dan tanda noktah dalam ayat dengan menggunakan kaedah MeKuHi. Sebanyak sepuluh orang daripada 36 orang murid telah dipilih secara bertujuan sebagai peserta kajian berdasarkan ujian diagnostik di sebuah sekolah Daerah Kota Marudu. Hasil tinjauan awal mendapati bahawa peserta kajian menghadapi masalah dalam kemahiran penulisan huruf besar, huruf kecil dan tanda noktah dalam ayat. Hal ini terjadi kerana peserta kajian tidak memiliki asas yang kukuh. Oleh itu, kaedah MeKuHi telah diperkenalkan sebagai intervensi bagi meningkatkan kemahiran peserta kajian yang lemah. Bagi memastikan kajian ini memiliki kebolehpercayaan dan kesahan yang baik, triangulasi data dapat dilaksanakan menerusi kaedah analisis dokumen, ujian, pemerhatian, soal selidik dan temu bual. Analisis kualitatif dan kuantitatif dilaksanakan sepanjang kajian ini. Setelah kaedah MeKuHi didedahkan, keputusan peserta kajian menunjukkan peningkatan menerusi menerusi ujian pasca. Persepsi peserta kajian adalah baik melalui soal selidik dan temu bual. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa kaedah MeKuHi berkesan untuk membantu murid Tahun 2 yang lemah dalam penggunaan huruf besar, huruf kecil dan tanda noktah dalam ayat. Pengkaji juga membincangankan cadangan kajian lanjutan pada masa akan datang. Diharapkan kaedah MeKuHi dapat dijadikan bahan bantu mengajar yang efektif kepada para guru Bahasa Melayu secara meluas. CHIN SATT FUNG PENGETAHUAN DAN KEMAHIRAN TEKNOLOGI MAKLUMAT DAN KOMUNIKASI GURU TERHADAP APLIKASINYA DALAM PENGAJARAN DAN PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA MELAYU ABSTRAK Tidak dapat dinafikan bahawa taraf hidup masyarakat semakin meningkat seiring dengan kemunculan dan kemajuan teknologi. Sungguhpun demikian, masih didapati kebanyakan guru jarang mengaplikasikan Teknologi Maklumat dan Komunikasi (TMK) bagi menghasilkan proses pembelajaran yang kreatif. Dengan itu, kajian ini dilaksanakan untuk mengenal pasti tahap pengetahuan dan tahap kemahiran TMK dalam kalangan guru Bahasa Melayu. Dalam kajian ini, pengkaji juga menganalisis hubungan antara tahap pengetahuan dan tahap kemahiran TMK guru terhadap aplikasinya dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran (PdP) Bahasa Melayu. Reka bentuk kajian ini adalah bersifat kuantitatif di mana soalan-soalan dikemukakan dalam bentuk Google Form telah diedarkan ke 75 buah sekolah rendah di Daerah Tuaran. Seramai 180 orang daripada 318 orang guru Bahasa Melayu telah menjawab soalan-soalan telah dijadikan sebagai responden dalam kajian ini. Hasil dapatan telah dianalisis secara statistik deskriptif dan statistik inferensi dengan menggunakan perisian Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Dapatan kajian menunjukkan tahap pengetahuan dan tahap kemahiran TMK bagi guru Bahasa Melayu sekolah rendah Daerah Tuaran adalah tinggi iaitu (min=3.93) dan (min=3.77). Seterusnya, dapatan kajian ini juga melaporkan bahawa terdapat hubungan yang tinggi antara tahap pengetahuan TMK guru (r=0.775) dan tahap kemahiran TMK guru (r=0.821) dengan penggunaannya dalam PdP Bahasa Melayu. Diharapkan kajian ini dijadikan salah satu sumber rujukan kepada pihak yang berkenaan untuk merencana tadbir urus yang lebih berkesan pada masa akan datang. LAM RONG RONG NAMA PENYELIA: PN. CHIN SATT FUNG FAKTOR SIKAP, RAKAN SEBAYA DAN AHLI KELUARGA TERHADAP PENGUASAAN BAHASA MELAYU DALAM KALANGAN MURID-MURID BERBANGSA CINA ABSTRAK Pengkaji mendapati bahawa terdapat banyak murid berbangsa Cina tidak dapat menguasai Bahasa Melayu (BM) dengan baik. Oleh itu, kajian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidik faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi penguasaan Bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan murid-murid berbangsa Cina pada tahap Tahun 5 di Daerah Sibu. Faktor-faktor yang diteliti termasuk sikap murid terhadap Bahasa Melayu, interaksi dengan rakan sebaya, dan pengaruh ahli keluarga. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah kajian tinjauan di mana data diperoleh melalui soal selidik Google Form yang diedarkan dan dijawab oleh 1,010 orang responden iaitu murid-murid berbangsa Cina di sekolah rendah Daerah Sibu. Data dianalisis menggunakan Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) versi 29.0 untuk pemerihalan data deskriptif dan inferensi. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa nilai purata min bagi faktor sikap murid berada pada tahap yang rendah (min=1.94). Dapatan yang diperolehi bagi dua lagi pembolehubah lain iaitu faktor rakan sebaya (min=2.08) berada pada tahap sederhana manakala faktor ahli keluarga (min=1.93) berada pada tahap rendah. Selain itu, analisis Kolerasi Pearson, r menunjukkan tiga faktor iaitu sikap (r=0.648, p=0.001), rakan sebaya (r=0.494, p=0.001) dan ahli keluarga (r=0.496, p=0.001) mempunyai hubungan signifikan yang positif dengan penguasan murid berbangsa Cina dalam mata pelajaran BM. Dapatan kajian ini diharapkan dapat dijadikan panduan kepada murid sendiri, rakan sebaya, ahli keluarga dan guru terhadap peranan mereka dalam meningkatkan penguasaan BM dalam kalangan murid berbangsa Cina. CAROLINE @ LORENA DAVID PENGETAHUAN DAN KESEDIAAN GURU BAHASA MELAYU TERHADAP PENGGUNAAN BAHAN BANTU MENGAJAR BERASASKAN MULTIMEDIA INTERAKTIF DI SEKOLAH RENDAH DAERAH TUARAN ABSTRAK Dalam abad ke-21 ini, sektor pendidikan telah berkembang mengikut peredaran zaman dengan wujudnya pelbagai jenis bahan bantu mengajar (BBM) berasaskan multimedia interaktif. Oleh itu, kajian tentang pengetahuan dan kesediaan guru bahasa Melayu terhadap penggunaan BBM berasaskan multimedia interaktif di sekolah rendah daerah Tuaran telah dilaksanakan. Reka bentuk kajian adalah berbentuk kuantitatif dan juga persampelan bertujuan digunakan dengan memilih guru Bahasa Melayu sebagai responden kajian. Instrumen kajian iaitu borang soal selidik telah diedarkan kepada 75 buah sekolah rendah di daerah Tuaran. Seramai 187 orang guru Bahasa Melayu terlibat dalam kajian tersebut. Data yang dikumpul telah dianalisis dengan menggunakan IBM SPSS versi 29 untuk pemerihalan data deskriptif dan inferensi. Analisis statistik deskriptif digunakan untuk memaparkan keputusan min, kekerapan dan peratusan. Hasil dapatan kajian menunjukkan kedua-dua pemboleh ubah tidak bersandar mempunyai purata min yang tinggi iaitu pengetahuan BBM berasaskan multimedia interaktif guru bahasa Melayu (min=4.18) dan kesediaan guru Bahasa Melayu (min=3.85). Penggunaan BBM berasaskan multimedia interaktif dalam pengajaran juga mendapat nilai min yang tinggi (min=3.89). Selain itu, analisis inferensi menggunakan korelasi Pearson juga digunakan untuk mengkaji hubungan antara pemboleh ubah bersandar dan tidak bersandar. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan pengetahuan BBM berasaskan multimedia interaktif guru Bahasa Melayu mempunyai hubungan yang sederhana kuat dengan penggunaan BBM berasaskan multimedia interaktif dalam pengajaran (r=0.656, p<0.01). Kesediaan guru Bahasa Melayu juga mempunyai hubungan yang kuat dengan penggunaan BBM berasaskan multimedia interaktif dalam pengajaran (r=0.745, p<0.01). Implikasi kajian tersebut terhadap beberapa pihak berkepentingan tentang keperluan meningkatkan penggunaan BBM berasaskan multimedia interaktif dalam PdP Bahasa Melayu juga dibincangkan LAW YIEN HUA NAMA PENYELIA: DR. CAROLINE @ LORENA DAVID PENGETAHUAN DAN KEMAHIRAN GURU BAHASA MELAYU TERHADAP AMALAN PEDAGOGI TERBEZA DI SEKOLAH RENDAH DAERAH TUARAN ABSTRAK Kajian tinjauan ini dijalankan secara kuantitatif dengan menggunakan borang soal selidik bagi mengenal pasti tahap pengetahuan, tahap kemahiran dan tahap amalan guru Bahasa Melayu dalam melaksanakan pedagogi terbeza di sekolah rendah daerah Tuaran. Kajian ini juga dijalankan untuk menentukan hubungan antara pengetahuan dan kemahiran guru Bahasa Melayu terhadap amalan pedagogi terbeza. Responden terdiri daripada 184 orang guru Bahasa Melayu di sekolah rendah daerah Tuaran. Sampel kajian ini ditentukan berdasarkan persampelan bertujuan. Data dikumpul dan dianalisis secara statistik deskriptif dan statistik inferensi melalui perisian Statistical Package for the Social Sciences versi 29.0. Analisis statistik deskriptif dibuat dalam bentuk kekerapan, min dan peratusan, manakala statistik inferensi dalam bentuk ujian Spearman Rho. Kajian mendapati bahawa tahap pengetahuan, tahap kemahiran dan tahap amalan guru BM dalam melaksanakan pedagogi terbeza berada pada tahap yang tinggi di mana skor min keseluruhan bagi tahap pengetahuan adalah 4.04, tahap kemahiran adalah 4.00 dan tahap amalan adalah 4.10. Dapatan juga menunjukkan terdapat hubungan signifikan yang positif antara pengetahuan dan kemahiran guru BM dengan amalan melaksanakan pedagogi terbeza dengan p <0.001 dan nilai r masing-masing adalah 0.660 dan 0.693. Dapatan ini memberi implikasi bahawa perlunya usaha yang berterusan untuk menggalakkan amalan pedagogi terbeza dalam kalangan guru Bahasa Melayu agar mereka dapat mengamalkan strategi pembelajaran yang lebih efisien dan dapat memenuhi keperluan pendidikan kini. CAROLINE @ LORENA DAVID MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN PENULISAN HURUF BESAR DAN NOKTAH DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 2 MENGGUNAKAN KIT SHARK FISH ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan penulisan huruf besar pada permulaan ayat dan tanda noktah pada hujung ayat dengan menggunakan Kit Shark fish (KSf) dalam kalangan murid Tahun 2. Punca masalah yang utama ialah sikap murid yang ingin menyiapkan kerja yang diberi dengan cepat sehingga mengakibatkan kecuaian. Kajian ini dijalankan di sebuah sekolah yang terletak di daerah Kota Belud, Sabah. Peserta kajian terdiri daripada 5 orang murid Tahun 2 iaitu seorang murid perempuan dan empat orang murid lelaki kajian. Kajian ini menggunakan Model Kurt Lewin (1948). Pengkaji telah menggunakan tiga instrumen bagi mengumpul data kajian iaitu ujian (ujian pra dan ujian pos), analisis dokumen dan pemerhatian. Intervensi telah dijalankan bagi meningkatkan tahap penguasaan peserta kajian dalam menulis huruf besar pada permulaan ayat dan tanda noktah pada hujung ayat. Berdasarkan dapatan kajian, didapati bahawa peserta kajian menunjukkan peningkatan yang ketara dalam ujian pos. Hal ini membuktikan bahawa KSf berjaya membantu peserta kajian dalam meningkatkan penguasaan penulisan huruf besar pada permulaan ayat dan tanda noktah pada hujung ayat semasa menulis ayat. CAROLINE @ LORENA DAVID SIKAP DAN CABARAN GURU PELATIH TERHADAP PENERAPAN KEMAHIRAN BERFIKIR ARAS TINGGI DALAM PENGAJARAN DAN PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA MELAYU ABSTRAK Kajian ini adalah untuk mengetahui sikap dan cabaran guru pelatih major Bahasa Melayu (BM) terhadap penerapan Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi (KBAT) dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran BM. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah tinjauan iaitu menggunakan borang soal selidik sebagai alat instrumen dalam kajian bagi mengumpul data. Data yang dikumpul telah dianalisis dengan menggunakan perisian Statistical Package for Science Social (SPSS) versi 29.0 untuk pemerihalan data deskriptif dan inferensi. Pengkaji dapat mengetahui min, sisihan piawai, kekerapan dan peratusan items melalui statistik deskriptif. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa nilai purata min bagi sikap guru pelatih terhadap KBAT berada pada tahap yang tinggi (min=3.32). Manakala purata min bagi cabaran guru pelatih terhadap KBAT pula berada pada tahap yang serdehana (min=2.75). Dapatan yang diperoleh dari pembolehubah penerapan KBAT dalam Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran (PdP) adalah pada tahap yang tinggi juga (min=3.47). Selain data deskriptif, analisis inferensi yang menggunakan pekali Korelasi Pearson turut digunakan bagi mengenal pasti hubungan antara sikap dan cabaran guru pelatih dengan penerapan KBAT dalam PdP. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan pemboleh ubah tidak bersandar iaitu sikap guru pelatih terhadap KBAT (r=.52, p<.01) mempunyai hubungan yang signifikan dengan pemboleh ubah bersandar iaitu penerapan KBAT dalam PdP. Bagi pemboleh ubah tidak bersandar iaitu cabaran guru pelatih terhadap KBAT pula tiada hubungan yang signifikan dengan pemboleh ubah bersandar iaitu penerapan KBAT dalam PdP. Berdasarkan kepada dapatan yang diperoleh, terdapat beberapa cadangan telah dikemukakan bagi meningkatkan lagi mutu-mutu pengajaran guru pelatih yang berasaskan KBAT. MASPI BIN PERAN MENINGKATKAN PENGUASAAN KATA GANDA PENUH DAN SEPARA DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 5 DENGAN MENGGUNAKAN PERMAINAN PAPAN ULAR ABSTRAK Penggunaan permainan papan ular merupakan intervensi yang digunakan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kata ganda penuh dan kata ganda separa dalam kalangan murid tahun lima. Intervensi permainan papan ular ini diaplikasikan untuk membantu murid mengenal pasti konsep kata ganda penuh dan separa seterusnya meningkatkan pencapaian dalam mata Pelajaran bahasa Melayu. Sebanyak enam orang murid tahun lima menghadapi masalah pembelajaran sedemikian di salah sebuah Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJKC) sekitar Tamparuli, Sabah telah terlibat. Dalam kajian ini, pengkaji menggunakan kaedah pemerhatian melalui borang senarai semak, ujian dan soal selidik untuk mengumpul data. Penilaian keberkesanan permainan papan ular ini diukur berdasarkan analisis tahap pemahaman murid berkaitan kata ganda penuh dan separa melalui pemerhatian menggunakan borang senarai semak. Tahap pencapaian murid dalam kata ganda penuh dan separa dinilai menerusi kaedah triangulasi data menggunakan ujian pra dan pasca serta borang soal selidik. Hasil dapatan melalui kaedah pemerhatian mendapati bahawa murid yang terlibat dalam kajian menunjukkan pemahaman yang jelas berkaitan kata ganda penuh dan separa. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh dalam ujian dan maklum balas soal selidik, terdapat peningkatan yang ketara dalam pencapaian murid menguasai kata ganda penuh dan separa. Natijahnya, permainan papan ular berjaya membantu murid memahami konsep kata ganda penuh dan separa seterusnya meningkatkan pencapaian mereka. MOHD ZULFADLIE BIN ABD SAMAD PENYELIA 1: DR. MASPI BIN PERAN PENGGUNAAN SET “INA & SAAD” DALAM MENINGKATKAN PENGGUNAAN KATA PEMERI DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN LIMA ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini dijalankan adalah untuk membantu murid-murid lemah dalam mempertingkatkan penguasaan aspek tatabahasa untuk kata pameri tahun 5 Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menambah baik amalan pengajaran guru di dalam kelas sekaligus dapat membantu murid untuk menguasai sistem tatabahasa yang difokuskan Kata Pemeri dengan mengaplikasikan set “iNa & SAad”. Set “iNa & SAad” ini disediakan dalam bentuk bahan bantu mengajar (BBM) agar lebih mudah difahami dan dilihat oleh murid-murid. Peserta kajian melibatkan 6 orang murid Tahun 5 dari sebuah sekolah rendah di Tamparuli. Pengkaji telah merancang menggunakan set “iNa & SAad” dan menggabungkan ia bagi mewujudkan satu set yang dapat memudahkan peserta kajian untuk memahami sambil bermain dengan teknik didik hibur ataupun permainan bahasa. Menurut Shamsudin dan Abdul Rasid (2013) , walaupun pelajar seronok, namun objektif pengajaran dan pembelajaran masih dapat dicapai seperti yang ditetapkan oleh sukatan pembelajaran. Pengkaji menggunakan pemerhatian, soal selidik dan ujian sebagai kaedah pengumpulan data. Data yang diperolehi kemudiaan dianalisis menggunakan analisis kuantitatif dan dihuraikan secara kualitatif. Hasil analisis data mendapati semua peserta kajian merekodkan peningkatan pencapaian dalam tajuk kata pemeri. Kesimpulannya, set “iNa & SAad” dapat membantu murid menguasai kemahiran dalam menggunakan kata pemeri “ialah” dan “adalah” tidak kira dalam kemahiran menulis mahupun kemahiran bertutur. MASPI BIN PERAN PENGGUNAAN KAEDAH SIBUA BAGI MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN MEMBINA AYAT MAJMUK DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN 2 ABSTRAK Kajian Tindakan ini dijalankan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan murid tahun 2 dalam kemahiran membina ayat majmuk dengan betul menggunakan Kaedah SIBUA. Kaedah SIBUA merupakan singkatan daripada Siapa Buat Apa. Penguasaan dalam membina ayat terutamanya ayat majmuk amat penting dalam kalangan murid khususnya murid tahap 1. Penguasaan murid terhadap pembinaan ayat majmuk amat penting terutamanya dalam bidang Bahasa Melayu kerana ianya merupakan asas dalam kemahiran penulisan. Kajian Tindakan ini telah dijalankan bagi membantu murid tahun 2 membina ayat majmuk dengan susunan ayat yang betul. Peserta kajian dalam kajian Tindakan ini terdiri daripada enam orang murid tahun 2 di salah sebuah sekolah yang terletak di daerah Tuaran, Sabah. Peserta kajian mempunyai masalah dari segi susunan ayat majmuk yang dibina daripada dua ayat Tunggal. Model Kurt Lewin (1948) telah digunakan dalam kajian ini. Data telah dikumpulkan melalui ujian (pra dan pasca), pemerhatian dan soal selidik. Hasil dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa semua peserta kajian Berjaya meningkat dalam penguasaan membina ayat majmuk dengan betul dalam ujian pasca berbanding ujian pra. Teknik ini digunakan bagi membantu murid membina ayat dengan susunan struktur ayat yang betul menggunakan rumus yang mudah untuk diingati sekaligus meningkatkan minat murid untuk membina ayat selepas mempelajari intervensi Si.A.Di.K. Seramai empat orang murid tahun lima di sebuah sekolah rendah di daerah Tuaran, Sabah telah terlibat dalam kajian ini. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui kaedah ujian pra, ujian intervensi, ujian pasca, pemerhatian dan soal selidik. Penilaian keberkesanan Kaedah Si.A.Di.K ini dibuat berdasarkan analisis peningkatan sebelum dan selepas intervensi diperkenalkan kepada murid melalui dapatan kajian yang diperoleh. Hasil tinjauan awal yang dilakukan melalui ujian pra dan pemerhatian mendapati murid boleh membina ayat ringkas. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh juga murid menunjukkan sikap bersemangat dan minat untuk membina ayat selepas intervensi diperkenalkan. Secara keseluruhannya, Kaedah Si.A.Di.K berjaya membantu meningkatkan keupayaan murid membina ayat. MASPI BIN PERAN MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN MENGEMBANGKAN IDEA DALAM PEMBINAAN AYAT MENGGUNAKAN KAEDAH “KATAK” DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHAP 2 ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini dilaksanakan adalah untuk membantu murid-murid yang lemah dalam proses mengembangkan ayat mengikut gambar bagi murid tahap 2 dengan mengaplikasikan kaedah “KATAK”. Kaedah ini telah disediakan dengan Bahan Bantu Mengajar atau BBM yang menjadi pemudah cara bagi murid untuk memahami dan dilihat oleh murid-murid. Fokus kajian adalah untuk melihat sejauh mana penggunaan kaedah “KATAK” dapat membantu meningkatkan kefahaman dan kemahiran mengembangkan huraian pembinaan ayat berdasarkan gambar tunggal untuk murid-murid. Kajian ini turut melibatkan sebanyak 6 orang murid tahun 5 dari Sekolah Kebangsaan Pekan Tuaran sebagai subjek tinjuan masalah. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah senarai semak, analisis dokumen, ujian pra dan ujian pos. Kajian ini diharapkan dapat membantu murid dalam meningkatkan kefahaman mereka tentang cara untuk membina ayat yang matang dan kritis. ROHAINI HAIROL PENYELIA 1: DR. NG LEE FONG MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN MEMBINA AYAT MENGGUNAKAN TEKNIK LOLLIPOP ‘SIBUATHURAI’ BAGI MURID TAHUN EMPAT ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini dilaksanakan di sebuah sekolah di daerah Tuaran, Sabah. Kajian tindakan ini dijalankan untuk meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar dengan menggunakan teknik Lollipop ‘SiBuatHurai’. Teknik Lollipop ‘SiBuatHurai’ merupakan gabungan daripada Si untuk Siapa (kata nama), Bu untuk Buat apa (kata kerja), at untuk tempat (lokasi), hu untuk Kata Hubung dan akhir sekali ialah rai untuk hurai (huraian melengkapkan ayat). Model Kajian Tindakan Kurt Lewin telah dipilih untuk melaksanakan kajian ini. Peserta dalam kajian ini terdiri daripada 10 orang yang mana daripada 10 orang peserta kajian yang dipilih dan terdapat 5 peserta yang memperlihatkan pencapaian yang kurang memuaskan dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Melayu. Data kajian ini dikumpul melalui ujian diagnostik, pemerhatian, analisis dokumen dan ujian penilaian (pra dan pos). Pengkaji menggunakan kaedah bercampur untuk menganalisis data kajian ini iaitu dengan menggunakan kaedah kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Keputusan analisis data-data yang dikumpul daripada peserta kajian dibandingkan untuk mengetahui sama ada penggunaan Teknik Lollipop ‘SiBuatHurai’ dapat membantu meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar dalam kalangan peserta kajian. Antara cadangan penambahbaikan yang dapat dilakukan pada masa hadapan ialah menambahkan intervensi yang menarik agar dapat menarik minat murid untuk kekal memberikan tumpuan dalam menyiapkan tugasan yang diberikan oleh guru serta membuat aktiviti latihan berkumpulan yang mana murid diberikan peluang untuk saling bantu-membantu dalam menyelesaikan aktiviti yang diberikan. NG LEE FONG PENGGUNAAN LAGU “KGNDO123” UNTUK MEMBANTU MURID TAHUN 5 MENGUASAI PENGGOLONGAN KATA GANTI NAMA DIRI ORANG ABSTRAK Kajian tindakan ini dijalankan untuk membantu murid Tahun Lima menyelesaikan masalah dalam penggolongan kata ganti nama diri orang dengan menggunakan teknik nyanyian lagu “KGNDO123”. Murid mudah keliru dengan penggolongan kata ganti nama diri orang dan mereka tidak dapat membezakan antara kata ganti nama diri orang pertama, kedua, dan ketiga. Sampel seramai 10 orang daripada 37 orang murid telah dipilih secara bertujuan sebagai peserta kajian berdasarkan ujian diagnostik yang dijalankan di sebuah sekolah daerah Kota Marudu. Tinjauan awal telah dilakukan melalui analisis dokumen dan hasil tinjauan menunjukkan murid-murid kurang mahir dalam penggolongan kata ganti nama diri orang. Sehubungan dengan itu, teknik nyanyian lagu “KGNDO123” telah diperkenalkan sebagai intervensi untuk meningkatkan penguasaan murid yang lemah dalam penggolongan kata ganti nama diri orang. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpul dan menganalisis data adalah analisis dokumen, ujian, pemerhatian, soal selidik, dan temu bual. Setelah intervensi diperkenalkan, keputusan ujian pasca peserta kajian menunjukkan peningkatan yang positif. Selain itu, hasil dapatan daripada soal selidik dan temu bual juga menunjukkan bahawa semua peserta kajian memberi persepsi yang positif terhadap penggunaan teknik nyanyian lagu “KGNDO123” dalam membantu murid menggolongkan kata ganti nama diri orang. Secara keseluruhannya, teknik nyanyian lagu “KGNDO123” dapat membantu murid Tahun 5 menguasai penggolongan kata ganti nama diri orang. SITI HAZIRA BINTI HAMID PENYELIA 1: DR. NG LEE FONG PENGGUNAAN TEKNIK KENA (KENAL DAN WARNA) UNTUK MEMANTAPKAN PENGUASAAN MURID TAHUN EMPAT BERKAITAN HURUF BESAR ABSTRAK Penyelidikan tindakan ini dijalankan bertujuan untuk memperbaiki kelemahan murid dalam menguasai kemahiran menulis yang melibatkan huruf besar bagi penulisan bahasa Melayu melalui “Teknik KeNa”. Peserta kajian terdiri daripada enam orang murid tahun empat di sebuah sekolah di Tuaran. Reka bentuk kajian adalah berdasarkan model Kurt Lewin (1948). Hasil tinjauan awal menunjukkan murid kurang peka terhadap kepentingan penggunaan ketiga-tiga tempat dalam menulis huruf besar iaitu pangkal ayat, selepas noktah dan pada kata nama khas. Dengan menggunakan “Teknik KeNa”, pengkaji telah menjalankan sesi intervensi yang melibatkan penggunaan pensel warna bagi mengurangkan kesilapan murid dalam penggunaan huruf besar ketika menulis. Dapatan pemerhatian dan soal selidik menunjukkan bahawa murid berminat dengan teknik yang diperkenalkan. Data analisis dokumen juga menunjukkan peningkatan penguasaan murid dalam penggunaan huruf besar. Rumusan kajian membuktikan bahawa “Teknik KeNa” dapat membantu murid yang kurang mahir menggunakan huruf besar pada tiga tempat yang perlu ditulis dengan huruf besar dalam penulisan. Bagi cadangan kajian tindakan yang seterusnya, kelemahan murid dalam menulis huruf besar dengan betul boleh digunakan dalam kajian seterusnya dengan menggunakan teknik yang sama iaitu “Teknik KeNa”. NG LEE FONG PENGGUNAAN KIT MAGIC GLOVES UNTUK MENINGKATKAN MURID MENGUASAI PERTUKARAN AYAT AKTIF KE AYAT PASIF SEKOLAH RENDAH ABSTRAK Kajian Tindakan ini dilaksanakan apabila pengkaji mendapati majoriti murid Tahun 5 yang ditemui semasa menjalankan Praktikum Fasa Satu membuat kesilapan dalam menjawab lembaran kerja berkaitan dengan penukaran ayat aktif ke ayat pasif. . Murid juga kelihatan bosan dan kurang berminat untuk menulis jawapan. Masalah ini telah memberikan inspirasi kepada pengkaji untuk menghasilkan Kit Magic Gloves bagi membantu murid menguasai konsep tersebut serta meningkatkan tahap minat murid. Miskonsepsi murid yang terdapat bagi konsep penukaran kata aktif ke ayat pasif juga akan dihuraikan oleh pengkaji agar pengkaji dapat mengetahui punca masalah murid. Seramai 10 orang peserta kajian telah terlibat dalam kajian ini. Bagi pengumpulan data, pengkaji telah menggunakan gabungan kajian kualitatif dan kuantitatif yang melibatkan menganalisis data ujian pra dan pos, pemerhatian serta borang soal selidik. NG LEE FONG MENINGKATKAN KEMAHIRAN MEMBINA AYAT BERDASARKAN GAMBAR DALAM KALANGAN MURID TAHUN EMPAT DENGAN MENGGUNAKAN RUMUS “SUPREME ABSTRAK Kemahiran membina ayat merupakan kemahiran yang amat penting dan perlu dikuasai oleh murid sejak Tahun satu. Oleh itu, kajian ini dilakukan bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar dalam kalangan murid Tahun empat dengan menggunakan Rumus “SuPreMe”. “SuPreMe” adalah akronim daripada perkataan Su (Subjek), Pre (Perbuatan), Me (Menerang). Seramai lima orang murid Tahun empat dari sebuah Sekolah Kebangsaan daerah Kota Belud telah dikenal pasti sebagai perserta kajian untuk kajian ini. Model Penyelidikan Tindakan Kurt Lewin (1946) dan pendekatan kualitatif serta kuantitatif telah digunakan dalam kajian ini. Hasil tinjauan awal daripada data kajian yang dikumpul melalui instrumen semakan dokumen, pengalaman sendiri dan temu bual mendapati semua peserta kajian menghadapi masalah dalam pembinaan ayat yang lengkap. Dengan itu, terdapat tiga intervensi telah dijalankan berdasarkan kaedah ansur maju secara berperingkat. Kajian ini juga menggunakan analisis dokumen, ujian pencapaian dan soal selidik bagi mengumpul data. Ujian pra telah digunakan untuk mengesan jenis kesilapan yang dilakukan oleh peserta kajian dalam menjawab soalan membina ayat. Seterusnya, peningkatan ujian pencapaian dianalisis menggunakan kaedah kuantitatif melalui perbandingan markah ujian pra dan ujian pos. Soal selidik pula dijalankan sebelum dan selepas intervensi bagi memastikan peningkatan minat dan keyakinan murid Tahun empat dalam pembinaan ayat. Berdasarkan dapatan kajian, Rumus “SuPreMe” dibuktikan berjaya membantu peserta kajian dalam meningkatkan kemahiran membina ayat berdasarkan gambar dan dijadikan sebagai panduan murid untuk menghasilkan ayat yang gramatis. Secara keseluruhannya, kajian tindakan ini dapat membantu guru dan murid menyelesaikan masalah pembinaan ayat seterusnya menjadi garis panduan untuk kajian lain pada masa akan datang. SOPHIA TSEN MOTIVATION IN LEARNING ENGLISH AMONG NON-TESL STUDENTS AT IPGK KENT English plays an essential part in tertiary education because of its global reach, significance in accessing knowledge and opportunities, and role in facilitating internationalization, employability, and cross-cultural understanding. Motivation is regarded as a stimulant for action, assisting individuals in overcoming hurdles on their path to success and fulfillment, especially in learning a language. This quantitative study aims to investigate the level and factors of motivation among non-TESL IPGK Kent students as well as how gender, school year and field of study bring differences to their level of motivation in English language learning. The participant of this study includes 164 foundation and fourth-year students from Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Kent Campus, Tuaran which were selected through purposive sampling method. The instrument of the study was a questionnaire called Survey of Motivation in Learning English (SMILE) adapted from Ugla (2021). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software Version 26. The findings indicate that the students exhibited a high motivation in learning English, displaying higher level of integrative motivation. The study also examined some aspects that influence students’ motivation such as gender, school year and field of study. The study shows that school year and field of study had a significant influence on students’ motivation in English language learning. Reasons contributing to varying levels of student motivation were also discussed. Several recommendations were provided to enhance the students’ motivation in learning English. SOPHIA TSEN CHALLENGES ON TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN LOW ENROLMENT SCHOOLS AMONG TRAINEE TEACHERS IN IPGK KENT ABSTRACT Previous studies found out teaching English as a second language has a significant level of difficulty for educators, especially when it is done in rural settings where the English language has been used for minimal purposes, mainly only in school during English lessons. It was measured through teachers' challenges in teaching English language in that particular setting. Nevertheless, this study has narrowed the scope to the low-enrolment schools which located in rural areas. This study sheds light on the challenges and the impacts of teaching English as Second Language (ESL) in rural areas specifically in low-enrolment schools focusing on trainee teachers in from Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Kent Campus, Tuaran. The data collected was based on the experiences of trainee teachers in previous practicum through semi-structured interview. There were only four participants since the populations to fit in with the objectives of the study. The use of the Social Interaction Model by John (2018) guided this study to find out the challenges in term of cultural, structural, materials and individual aspects. Therefore, the Social Interaction model used in this study helped to discover the real challenges and the impacts of teaching the English language in low-enrolment schools faced by trainee teachers during practicum. SOPHIA TSEN A CASE STUDY ON THE UTILIZATION OF GAMIFICATION ELEMENTS IN ENGLISH LEARNING AMONG TRAINEE TEACHERS AT IPGK KENT The use of technology-based learning media is generally considered better than the traditional according to experts. Government even introduces games as one of the channels in self-directed online learning model to integrated technology-based learning media in learning. For examples, applications such as Quizizz, Quizlet and Kahoot have been gradually integrated in higher education as they offer a personal and learner-centred learning opportunity by employing ubiquitously flexible and accessible practices. Respondents consisted of 6 trainee teachers from Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Kent Campus, Tuaran selected through purposive sampling. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis and semantic approach was employed. The research findings shows that most of trainee teachers prefer using gamifications in learning English specifically the Quizizz learning applications. Through the research, the most useful elements are the media use that captivate respondents’ attention and increase their motivations to learn English. By uncovering the advantages, challenges and the most useful gamifications elements for IPG Kent students in utilizing gamifications in learning English, this study aims to expose valuable information about gamifications in learning English. Ultimately, this project is to support the development of ESL instruction in the digital era while making a significant contribution to the larger educational conversation on the incorporation of ICT in modern teaching and learning. A well-chosen method facilitates students' understanding of the subject matter and fosters their active engagement and motivation in the learning experience. While conventional teaching methods have been a mainstay, modern instructional approaches that integrate electronic media, particularly audio-visual methods, hold practicality and offer enhanced learning outcomes. This article delves into the significance and effectiveness of utilizing audiovisual media methods in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. In addition to conventional teaching approaches, leveraging electronic media, such as audio-visual aids, offers a dynamic platform to engage learners and instill a sense of motivation and curiosity. This study engaged 61 TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) trainee teachers enrolled at the Institute of Teaching Education Kent Campus, located in Tuaran, Malaysia. SOPHIA TSEN ICT INTEGRATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING AMONG TRAINEE TEACHERS AT IPG KENT ABSTRACT The Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025 emphasized the importance of integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education to improve teaching and learning. By employing a quantitative research methodology, this study was conducted to explore trainee teacher’s level of ICT knowledge, frequency, and challenges in ICT integration in ELT based on their previous practicum. Respondents from Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Kent Campus, Tuaran were selected through purposive sampling. A total of 60 trainee teachers completed the online questionnaires that were distributed through Whatsapp. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 26 was used to analyze the data using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that trainee teachers of IPG Kent have a relatively high level of ICT knowledge. Despite various challenges, with lack of equipment, technical support, and time constraints as the most prominent issues, trainee teachers frequently employ ICT for certain aspects of their teaching, such as resource searching, preparing presentation slides, and developing teaching aids. This indicates that trainee teachers of IPG Kent are ICT literate and prepared to integrate it into their teaching. Hence, the development of practical guidelines to aid teachers to overcome the difficulties of adopting ICT would be a key outcome of this study for educators, researchers, and school administration. NURATIQAH MARUKAU CASE STUDY: ANIMATED VIDEOS INTEGRATION AND STRATEGIES BY TESL PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS DURING PRACTICUM ABSTRACT The use of animated videos in teaching English as second language is an advance approach which considered essential to stimulate young learners’ intrinsic motivation to develop English language skills. This Qualitative study was conducted to investigate the integration and pedagogical strategies in maximizing the effectiveness of animated videos in English as Second Language (ESL) teaching and learning. Respondents consists of five Teaching English as Second Language (TESL) pre-service teachers who were selected via purposive sampling. Collected data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that TESL pre-service teachers often integrate animated videos among the three stages which are induction, presentation, and closure. The participants revealed that student-centered activities and Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) were among the pedagogical strategies best employed with animated videos to maximize its efficacy in ESL lessons. TESL pre-service teachers were able to encourage English language skills development through integration of animated videos with suitable pedagogical strategies. NURATIQAH MARUKAU A CASE STUDY: ENGLISH TEACHERS' USE OF GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD IN PRIMARY ESL CLASSROOM The Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is a commonly used approach to language acquisition in rural Malaysian primary schools and it is widely used in middle schools, representing a classic approach to language instruction. The main objectives of the research were to investigate English teachers’ implementation of GTM in the English language classroom and to find out the advantages of GTM implementation in the English language teaching and learning practice. The research also sought to explore the integration of alternative teaching techniques with the GTM in English classrooms, in enhancing the effectiveness of the English language instructions. Four English teachers teaching in a rural primary school located in the Tuaran district were chosen as the participants. Data collection included the use of interviews and classroom observations. Meanwhile, the thematic analysis was used to examine the study’s outcomes. It is essential for ESL learners to use both L1 and the L2 appropriately to enhance the effectiveness of English language instruction. Therefore, the Grammar Translation Method is deemed appropriate. Consequently, this study was undertaken to establish the dependability of the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) within the dynamic context of the current educational system. It encompasses of various skills including recognising letters and words, understanding grammar and syntax, comprehending context and making inferences. This skill greatly aids pupils in advancing their educational journey. This case study investigates the common reading problems that pupils with reading skills face in the lower primary English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom, as well as the reading strategies that teachers employ in improving the pupils reading proficiency. Additionally, the study also explores the various factors that influence teachers in choosing reading strategies for their pupils. Data for the study were obtained through interviews with lower primary English teachers from SK Guakon, Tuaran, Sabah. The findings reveal that reading strategies yields noteworthy improvements in the pupils’ reading proficiency. This study contributes to the broader conversation surrounding language acquisition and literacy development, shedding light on the challenges faced by Level 1 ESL students and teachers’ vital role in fostering their reading skills.

NURATIQAH MARUKAU TESL TRAINEE TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF TECHNOLOGY USE IN PROMOTING SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING AND COLLABORATIVE LEARNING ABSTRACT This research study explores the perceptions of TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) trainee teachers regarding the integration of technology in English language classrooms to foster self-directed and collaborative learning. As technology continues to permeate educational settings, understanding how future language educators perceive its role in language acquisition and pedagogical approaches is crucial. This research employs survey research design, incorporating questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale to gather insights from 90 of the TESL trainee teachers. The data obtained was analysed using descriptive analysis technique with the assistance of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) Ver. 26 software. The instrument's reliability score of 0.77 indicates that the instrument used in this study is at an acceptable level of reliability. The findings suggest that the trainee teachers hold generally positive attitudes towards the use of technology in the classroom. They perceive technology as a valuable tool for enhancing self-directed learning. Furthermore, the study reveals that TESL trainee teachers also acknowledge the potential of technology in promoting collaborative learning through platforms that facilitate communication and cooperation among learners. This research underscores the importance of preparing future TESL educators to effectively utilize technology to meet the diverse needs of English language learners. CLAIRE LESLIE SYLVESTER ESL TRAINEE TEACHERS’ READING HABITS AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS ENGLISH LANGUAGE READING Reading is frequently regarded as an essential skill in the context of learning English as a second language. The Malaysia Standard Curriculum for Primary School (KSSR) and the English language curriculum in Malaysia also place emphasis on its importance. This study seeks to comprehend the reading habits and attitudes of ESL trainee teachers in English Language Materials in Institute Teacher Education (ITE) Kent Campus Tuaran, Sabah, Malaysia. The information for this study was gathered via a survey. This study utilised Smith's (1991) Adult Survey of Reading Attitude (ASRA) and Pandian's (1997) Reading Habit questionnaire where both survey and questionnaire were adapted by Edward et al. (2022). The sampling method used Krejcie and Morgan Sampling Method. The data was analysed using SPSS Version 27.0 software and descriptive statistics was used to determine the respondents’ reading habits and attitudes. The questionnaire was sent to 90 trainee teachers. The result shows that majority of the trainee teachers spend time on reading for an average amount of time in a day. The study also revealed that the participants have keen interest in reading comic and novel materials. The trainee teachers attitudes interpreted as having a moderate reading attitude.

CLAIRE LESLIE SYLVESTER A CASE STUDY: TRAINEE TEACHERS' PERCEPTIONS TOWARDS STUDENTS COLLABORATIVE LEARNING AS THE ENGLISH TEACHING STRATEGY ABSTRACT An effective teaching strategy among trainee teachers is fundamental to determining the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process (TnL) of the English language. In the context of this study, the teaching strategy, which is collaborative learning among students, has been identified as one of the teaching strategies that trainee teachers often use during the TnL English language process. This qualitative study was carried out to identify the perceptions, strengths, and challenges of trainee teachers in the implementation of collaborative learning among students. The respondents consisted of six TESL teacher trainees of the PISMP June 2020 intake who had undergone Phase 1 practicum. Data was analysed using thematic analysis based on semi-structured interview questions that were adapted from Long et al. (2016) and Abahussain (2020). Based on Lev Vygotsky's theory of the Zone of Proximal Development Model, collaborative learning among students clearly shows the effectiveness of this teaching strategy in increasing the student's engagement in their learning. It highlights the importance of social interaction in the learning of the English language. Therefore, through this theory, the research gained a valid and reliable result of findings in the implementation of collaborative learning among the students through the trainee teachers’ perceptions and experiences of the strengths and challenges of collaborative learning. This theory shows the importance of selecting a suitable teaching strategy for trainee teachers to adapt according to the needs of the students and improve the TnL competence of trainee teachers. Recent research focuses on pre-service English teachers in Tuaran, Malaysia. The study aims to investigate these educators' views on utilizing augmented reality (AR) as a tool for teaching vocabulary to primary school students. It also explores the potential impact of AR integration on the teaching and learning (TnL) process. The study's participant pool comprises four pre-service English teachers, all sourced through a purposeful sampling method. To gather data for the research, a semi-structured interview approach was employed. Data analysis used the thematic analysis method by Braun and Clarke in 2006. The findings show various participant perspectives on using AR to teach vocabulary to primary students and its impact on the teaching and learning process. Favorable perspectives underscore AR's ability to captivate students' interest, enhance engagement, and encourage active participation in lessons. Conversely, unfavorable views center on worries related to time usage, technological limitations in certain regions, and the financial circumstances of students when introducing AR in education. DAISY CONSTANCE ANAK BANTA THE USE OF LANGUAGE ARTS IN TEACHING SPEAKING SKILLS: A CASE STUDY OF TRAINEE TEACHERS ABSTRACT A key component of language teaching and learning is the development of language skills, especially speaking proficiency. Teaching speaking skills through Language Arts is an innovative approach that integrates language learning with the study of literature, writing, and other language-related disciplines. With a growing emphasis on holistic language learning, this study investigates how Language Arts strategies can enhance speaking proficiency in the classroom. The research draws on qualitative data collected from 6 ITE Kent Campus TESL trainee teachers as participants, examining their experiences and perceptions of incorporating Language Arts strategies into teaching speaking skills. In-depth data was gathered through interviews. Findings reveal that the integration of Language Arts strategies has a positive impact on trainee teachers' ability to develop and deliver engaging speaking lessons. Utilizing drama, storytelling, singing, and role play not only fostered a more engaging and dynamic learning environment but also facilitated the development of students' speaking abilities. Trainee teachers reported improved student engagement, confidence, and communication skills. This research contributes to the ongoing dialogue about innovative pedagogical approaches in language education. It highlights the significance of integrating ELA strategies into speaking instruction, equipping trainee teachers with valuable tools to cultivate effective speaking skills in their future classrooms. DAISY CONSTANCE ANAK BANTA ESL TRAINEE TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION TOWARDS THE USE OF LITERATURE IN PRIMARY ESL CLASSROOM: A CASE STUDY ABSTRACT This study aimed to explore ESL trainee teachers’ perception towards the implementation of literature in the primary ESL classroom. The case study were conducted qualitatively using semi-structured interview questions as the instrument. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 6 ESL trainee teachers to investigate their perceptions on the use of literature, their motivation to use literature in their lessons and also the challenges they faced during the integration of literature in the primary ESL classroom. The interviews included questions about the sample’s opinion on the relevance of literature in the ESL classroom, the challenges they faced and how they overcame the challenges, pupils’ respond towards the literature lesson and also how likely are the trainee teachers to use literature in their lessons. The results of the interview revealed that the trainee teachers mostly enrolled literature in their lessons and they are motivated to use literature. However, a few of the participants mentioned that their pupils find literature as not entertaining and another mentioned about the difficulty in choosing appropriate literary texts for the pupils. This draw the study to conclusions on how these pre-service teachers see the implementation of literature in their lessons in primary ESL classroom.

DAISY CONSTANCE ANAK BANTA THE USAGE OF DIGITAL STORYTELLING AMONG TRAINEE TEACHERS TO IMPROVE LISTENING SKILLS AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS ABSTRACT Teaching primary school pupils using traditional storytelling is not considered as a negative way to spread knowledge. Yet, making use of technologies nowadays is crucial as a modern-day teacher. Therefore, digital storytelling is a new approach that gives the pupils and the teachers modernized learning experience by putting themselves in a futuristic teaching and learning environment. This case study focuses on how the use of digital storytelling in the ESL classroom benefits both teachers and pupils. A total of five TESL trainee teachers from IPG Kent Campus who had experienced practicum were selected as participants in this study. A semi-structured interview was conducted to obtain data from the participants. The data collected from the interview was recorded. My research findings indicate most teachers agreed that digital storytelling does motivate the pupils to learn English based on several factors. This can clearly be seen when most of the participants reported that the engagement of the pupils in the classroom increased when this approach is being used. This approach can be the alternative for the teachers in schools to improve their teaching skills and strategies. MUHAMMAD SHUKRI BIN SALLEH SUPERVISOR: MS. DAISY CONSTANCE ANAK BANTA EXPLORING PERCEPTIONS AND CHALLENGES OF MULTIMEDIA TOOLS IN LEARNING VOCABULARY AMONG ESL PRE – SERVICE TEACHERS ABSTRACT The fundamental of acquiring a language is through learning its vocabulary. In recent years, Multimedia tools have been integrated with language learning to ease up the process. This qualitative research explored ESL pre service teachers perceptions and challenges towards multimedia tools in learning vocabulary. Therefore, ESL pre-service teachers’ choice of multimedia tools , the factors behind the choices and challenges were investigated. Random sampling was used to select the respondents from TESL June 2021 Intake. The research’s instrument consisted of semi-structured interview questions and the findings were analysed thematically. The results revealed the participants have their own perceptions , factors and barriers on using multimedia tools in learning English Vocabulary. The findings suggest that multimedia tools facilitate vocabulary learning by providing visual cues which helps in acquiring English words. It is hoped that this research would help trainee teachers better grasp the importance of integrating multimedia elements in learning vocabulary.

This helps develop listening, phonemic awareness, and early reading skills. Therefore, this research intends to investigate trainee ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers’ view in using nursery rhymes to teach vocabulary. The study focuses primarily on how teachers view the value and effects of utilizing nursery rhymes as a pedagogical technique for vocabulary acquisition. A survey questionnaire that was intended to gauge trainee teachers’ perceptions on using nursery rhymes to teach vocabulary was used as the main tool for gathering data for the study. 60 ESL trainee teachers from ITE Kent Campus made up the study's participants, offering a variety of perspectives and experiences. The collected data was analyzed through descriptive analysis using SPSS Version 26 software. According to some researchers, young pupils appear to use cognitive, social learning strategies more frequently. Learning English as a second language requires constant, conscious effort in order to achieve the goals. In relation to that, this research has been carried out purposely to study and have better insight of English Language trainee teachers’ perceptions, the challenges and the effects on the use of language games in the ESL classroom. In order to achieve this goal, a qualitative study using a case study design. Based on data collection through semi-structured interview questions and trainee teachers’ lesson plan. The findings of semi-structured interview questions and trainee teachers’ lesson plan is analysed through thematic analysis and document analysis. Meanwhile, the validity and reliability of the research findings were achieved through the triangulation technique and re-checking of the data by the study participants and the experts. In order to do this, a case study has been taken in which TESL trainee teachers of ITE Kent were identified to be the respondents. The results of the research revealed that the trainee teachers have strong beliefs on the effectiveness of language games in ESL classrooms. Trainee teachers who have experience in teaching English language in the classroom also believe that the use of language games gives so much benefits to the pupils and the teacher as well.

DARAINI BINTI OYOT ESL TRAINEE TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF USING SONGS IN TEACHING ENGLISH IN AN ESL CLASSROOM ABSTRACT The art of teaching ESL has evolved significantly over the years, moving beyond traditional methodologies and embracing innovative approaches to enhance the language acquisition experience. The integration of songs helps to increase young learners’ memorization as it provides a variety of mnemonic codes including repetition as well as rhyme and melody. The use of songs in learning English helps to boost young learners’ motivation as the lesson is supported by catchy lyrics as well as colourful visuals. The research employs a quantitative approach where data is collected via survey questionnaires in the form of Google Forms, and distributed to 60 ESL trainee teachers in the Institute of Teacher Education Kent Campus, Tuaran via purposive sampling. A descriptive analysis was used to analyse the quantitative data using the SPSS Version 26 software. The findings of the study revealed that ESL trainee teachers have confidence in the pedagogical value of using songs, a positive attitude toward using songs, and agreed on the advantages of using songs to teach English. The study recognises the significance of understanding preservice teachers' viewpoints and ideas because they are future educators who will affect ESL students' learning experiences. This study aims to improve ESL instruction and the quality of vocabulary teaching tactics in the classroom by investigating their beliefs. Data for the study will be gathered through interviews. Semi-structured interviews with preservice teachers will be undertaken to acquire insights into their beliefs about vocabulary teaching strategies. Thematic analysis will be utilised as a data analysis tool to uncover patterns and themes in the beliefs of the participants. The researchers will acquire a better grasp of the underlying factors that determine preservice teachers' attitudes about vocabulary teaching strategies in ESL classrooms by analysing the data thematically. The findings of this study have the potential to inform ESL teacher education programmes, curriculum creation, and professional development activities. Therefore, a variety of strategies are employed to aid enhance listening skills, including the utilization of YouTube videos as online learning resources. This qualitative study aims to examine trainee teachers' perceptions on the importance of enhancing listening skills, their perceptions on utilizing YouTube videos as online learning resources and the implications of using YouTube videos to enhance listening skills. Convenience sampling was used to select the respondents from the TESL June 2020 Intake at the IPG Kent Campus Tuaran, Sabah. The research's instrument consisted of semi-structured interview questions, and the findings were analysed thematically. According to the findings, trainee teachers have their own perceptions on using YouTube videos for listening purposes. The use of YouTube videos has also greatly affected their capacity to listen. Additionally, it is hoped that this research would help trainee teachers better grasp the importance of enhancing listening skills and utilizing YouTube videos to aid their learning. It has emerged as an educational approach that aligns with Malaysia's education transformation agenda. In this context, understanding how teachers perceive this approach and the obstacles they face is of paramount importance for effective implementation. This study endeavors to provide valuable insights into the integration of blended learning within the Malaysian primary school context, shedding light on its potential to enhance education in Malaysia and contribute to the broader global discourse on innovative pedagogical approaches. It seeks to answer two research questions; 1) What are English teachers' perceptions of blended learning in primary ESL classroom? and 2) What are the challenges do English teachers face when implementing blended learning in primary ESL classroom? This quantitative study employed a modified 5-point Likert scale survey to gather data, and the collected information was processed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. DARAINI BINTI OYOT EXPLORING THE USE OF GAMIFICATION AMONG PRIMARY ENGLISH TEACHERS: A CASE STUDY ABSTRACT The incorporation of gamification in education has emerged as an influential approach to reform traditional learning spaces and effectively involve students. This study analyses teachers’ perceptions and the impact of gamification on student motivation, diverse learning styles, achievement of learning objectives, and the fostering of Higher-Order Thinking skills (HOTs) in primary English classrooms. The research included the participation of three primary English teachers who were selected through purposive sampling. Each participant underwent semistructured interviews and observations. The collected data was subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis methods. Preliminary results indicate that teachers hold positive perceptions regarding the integration of gamification into their English lessons. Moreover, these findings suggest that gamification not only affects motivation but also facilitates the development of higher-order thinking skills, accommodates diverse learning styles, and contributes to the attainment of learning objectives. This research enhances our understanding of how teachers perceive gamification and offers practical guidance for educators seeking to optimize the advantages of implementing gamification in primary English education. Therefore, this research aims to describe the strategies of enhancing pupils' speaking skill in using the English language based on the trainee teachers’ perception. The study found that there was a wide gap between low proficiency pupils and highlevel proficiency pupils in communicating using the English language. Although there are many obstacles to improving speaking skills in English, there are also solutions to these problems that can be applied. Therefore, the trainee teachers’ perceptions on various strategies for them to accommodate the pupils' lack of fluency in speaking English are playing a major role in this study. This research used interview questions and reflective journals as the instruments. The subjects of this research were three trainee teachers who majored in TESL from June 2020 intake at Institute of Teacher Education Kent Campus, Sabah. The data were collected by conducting one-to-one interviews sessions and reflective journals with the trainee teachers. Results have indicated that strategies used by the trainee teachers to enhance a better English-speaking skill among pupils such as role plays, questioning strategy and incorporating English media is shown to be beneficial to increase pupils’ speaking proficiency. The implications of this research were that strategies employed by the trainee teachers have a significant impact on the pupils' proficiency in speaking which were their motivation to learn and their pronunciation. CLAIRE LESLIE SYLVESTER PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVES TOWARDS THE INTEGRATION OF 21ST CENTURY SKILLS IN ESL CLASSROOM ABSTRACT I21st century skills are one of the major elements in 21st century learning, including in language teaching and learning. Emphasis has been put on integrating the 4Cs (Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creative Thinking) in the lesson as a preparation for the students to face the 21st century challenges. However, these skills are unable to be fully implemented in the classroom due to some constraints, such as the environment and practicality. This study aims to explore pre-service teachers’ views and challenges that they have encountered in integrating 21st century skills in their ESL classroom. The study was qualitatively conducted as a case study by involving 5 pre-service teachers among PISMP TESL June 2020 Intake who have gone for their first phase of practicum. The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and the results indicated that the preservice teachers have ample knowledge and positive views toward the integration of 21st century skills in ESL classrooms. The challenges were also discovered, such as students’ acceptance, teachers’ dedication and lack of resources in integrating 21st century skills, especially in the English lessons. The findings of this study are expected to bring insights to teachers and pre-service teachers to prepare themselves with ample knowledge and relevant skills in encountering those challenges to deliver effective and engaging lessons.

CLAIRE LESLIE SYLVESTER THE IMPLICATIONS OF USING GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD DURING ENGLISH LESSON ABSTRACT This case study aims to investigate the impacts of using the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) during English lesson among trainee teachers who had undergone Practicum Phase 1 in primary school. When undergoing Practicum Phase 1, the researcher had observed several methods to teach English lesson. As the researcher was doing initial research on what to look for study based from past study, the researcher had noticed that it was quite challenging to find similar research based on our country education in the recent years. The researcher focus on the study of GTM to discover trainee teachers’ opinions on using this method as well as its strengths and weaknesses. The researcher had used thematic analysis approach to acquire proper data for this qualitative research. There were 5 participants that had been interviewed to obtain data that were needed. The researcher had indicated that there are more disadvantages of using this method. Based from the research findings, the study has concluded that by the trainee teachers should know on how to use this method wisely during classroom in order to make this method work. Plus, the trainee teachers should use this method only for certain time in order to maximize effective results. Thus, the research based on this method hopefully can be contribute for our education. CLAIRE LESLIE SYLVESTER PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVE ON DEDUCTIVE AND INDUCTIVE METHODS IN TEACHING GRAMMAR: A CASE STUDY ABSTRACT Although grammar is a fundamental part of English, it is also undoubtedly one of the most difficult English abilities for learners to master. The two primary pedagogical approaches for teaching grammar—inductive and deductive— each have advantages and drawbacks of their own. Due to its simplicity and clarity of application, deductive technique is more frequently used by teachers than inductive approach. However, because they are unfamiliar with the inductive method, the majority of pre-service teachers only employ deductive method while instructing grammar. This study intends to investigate pre-service teachers' viewpoints on deductive and inductive approaches to teaching, to identify the most effective approach for teaching grammar, and to investigate preservice teachers' practical experience with applying inductive and deductive approaches to teaching grammar. In this study, we will evaluate the responses provided by a sample of pre-service teachers who are enrolled in the Institute of Teacher Education Kent Campus using interview sessions as our method for data collection.

CLAIRE LESLIE SYLVESTER EXPLORING THE REASONS BEHIND TRAINEE TEACHERS’ CODE-SWITCHING DURING THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE ABSTRACT Teaching English to non-native speakers requires understanding why teachers sometimes use both English and their students’ native languages in the ESL classroom. This study explores why trainee teachers do this, what they think about it, and how they make it work. Three main questions guide: (1) What motivates trainee teachers to code-switch? (2) How do trainee teachers perceive the impact of code-switching on ESL student engagement and comprehension? (3) What strategies do trainee teachers use to integrate code-switching effectively? The participants consisted of 5 trainee teachers who are majoring in TESL. The data were analysed by one-to-one interviews and reflections. The study found that trainee teachers have different reasons for code-switching. Some do it to make sure students understand, while others use it to manage class behaviour. Trainee teachers see both good and bad effects of implementing it. Students are able to engage more, but there can be downsides to it. To make it work, trainee teachers use various tricks, like switching at the right times and in the right ways. This study helps us understand when and why trainee teachers code-switch in ESL classes. It also gives us ideas for how to teach trainee teachers to use this technique effectively. By exploring trainee teachers’ views and methods, we learn how to make ESL classes more engaging and effective for students. JOCELYN MARIANNE ANAK JUNNY SUPERVISOR: MS. SHELEN ADERINA KOK IMPACTS OF USING AUTHENTIC MATERIALS ON THE SPEAKING SKILL OF PUPILS: PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVE ABSTRACT While quite a number of researches on the impacts of using authentic materials on English language skills exist, little emphasis was put on the impacts of authentic materials on the speaking skill of pupils. The present study was carried out to gain a profound insight on the perspective of pre-service teachers towards the impacts of using authentic materials on pupils’ speaking skill and the strategies pre-service teachers utilise in selecting authentic materials to teach speaking skill. This qualitative study was conducted on five pre-service teachers of Institute of Teacher Education Kent Campus through purposive sampling with the criteria of being a TESL pre-service teacher, having practicum experience and having experience of utilising authentic materials in the teaching of English language subject. Data were collected through valid and reliable open-ended interview questions and reflective journal. Results are discussed in terms of the impacts of using authentic materials on the speaking skills of pupils which are vocabulary mastery, pronunciation and fluency, as well as the strategies pre-service teachers utilise in selecting authentic materials to teach speaking skill. The study suggests that using authentic materials in the English language lesson does strengthen the pupils’ vocabulary mastery, improve and correct their pronunciation, as well as enhance their English-speaking fluency.

SHELEN ADERINA KOK IMPACT OF USING DIRECT METHOD TO IMPROVE SPEAKING SKILLS AMONG PRIMARY ESL LEARNERS ABSTRACT English language is considered as a foreign language in Malaysia. Thus, there are few methods that are used to teach English Language to ESL learners. Direct method is a teaching method that fully uses the target language in the teaching and learning process (Sitorus & Silitonga, 2018). This method focuses on training the learner’s oral skill which are speaking and listening skills (Ali, 2020). Due to the absence of native language when using this method, learners are more exposed to the target language and getting familiar to it. As English is not the first language for the pupils, this resulting in them having a low proficiency in English. One of the factors affecting their proficiency is the influenced of their mother tongue. Previous studies focuses on the impact of direct method on adult learners while this research focuses more on primary ESL learners. In this study, data were collected through semi-structured interview and document analysis with five TESL trainee teachers. One-on-one interview was conducted also reflective journal and teacher’s diary entries were distributed to the participants. Findings discussed about the impact of using direct method to improve pupils’ speaking skills in term of confidence, fluency and participation in the classroom. This result suggests that using direct method in the classroom does have a positive impact on pupils’ speaking skills. KHAIRUL AZIM BIN ROSLAN SUPERVISOR: MS. SHELEN ADERINA KOK THE INFLUENCE OF ENGLISH-SPEAKING MEDIA ON ENGLISH SPEAKING CONFIDENCE AMONG IPG TESL TRAINEES ABSTRACT Speaking skill is an integral part when it comes to communicating with others. On an international level, speaking skill is crucial to allow a verbal communication that will be our daily language. Teacher who needs to teach student to speak plays a critical role to help them create a foundation on how to use speaking skill. The objective on this study is to investigate on the influence that English-speaking medias can do towards speaking confidence. As English-speaking skill will be main skill to teach English in the classroom, the IPG TESL trainees will be the focus group for this research. A quantitative method of data collection is applied, collecting responses by participants of the research through questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 8 items that uses Likert Scale that was developed by Rensis Likert. The research helps to identify the motivating and demotivation factors from EnglishSpeaking medias towards speaking confidence. It stresses on how the word pronunciation, accent, slangs that were imitated, copied, and studied from the English-Speaking media effects their speaking confidence. This can help future researchers to create an imitable media for the learners to practice on for their speaking skill.

SOPHIA TSEN CHALLENGES IN USING ENGLISH AMONG SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS ABSTRACT Dual-Language Programme (DLP) requires Science and Mathematics teachers to teach the subjects in Malay and English. Extensive research has focused on the implementation and perceptions of DLP. However, there is a gap in research involving pre-service teachers’ perspectives. This includes the challenges and strategies used in using the English language in learning. Thus, this research aims to understand the challenges and pedagogical strategies in using English in learning teaching and learning methodology among Science and Mathematics preservice teachers. The mixed-method design was chosen for this research. A survey was administered to 87 Science and Mathematics pre-service teachers to examine their English language grades. Then, unstructured interviews were carried out with six participants chosen based on the survey data to explore the challenges and the pedagogical strategies that they applied in using the language to learn teaching and learning methodology. The interview data were interpreted and analysed thematically. This study may help future Science and Mathematics pre-service teachers to find appropriate strategies that can be implemented and is significant as it may help stakeholders to provide intervention programmes in overcoming the challenges of using the English language in the learning process. SHELEN ADERINA KOK CASE STUDY: TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS ON THE IMPACTS OF VOCABULARY SIZE TOWARDS PUPILS' SPEAKING PROFICIENCY ABSTRACT According to the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025, there are 11 shifts of transformations; one of them is to be proficient in both the Malay language and the English language. Malaysian primary pupils were not able to understand some words which hindered their ability to build sentences using that particular words. There is a wide gap between the high and low-speaking proficiency pupils due to having different vocabulary sizes. Low speaking proficiency pupils can improve their speaking skills by increasing their range of vocabulary knowledge. Teachers encourage pupils to speak while the pupils are not yet prepared and the teachers expect the pupils to use vocabulary that the pupils have not yet mastered, leading to the pupils’ inability to communicate appropriately (Kashinathan & Aziz, 2021). This study aims to identify the teachers’ perception of the effect of vocabulary size towards the pupils’ ability to communicate in English. Three English teachers from the same primary school were involved in this research as the participants. The main instruments of this research are interviews and document analysis. The findings of this research support that sufficient vocabulary size can assist the primary pupils’ speaking proficiency. The results of this research are advantageous to teachers as it might expose them to the importance of having a broad vocabulary size among primary pupils. Hence teachers would naturally increase their pupils’ vocabulary knowledge so that the pupils are more proficient when speaking English during and outside of the classroom.

However, not all pre-service teachers have been implementing digital gamification in class as they find comfort with the traditional way. The purpose of the study is to understand TESL pre-service teachers’ opinions toward the usage of digital gamification in English lessons. This includes 1) understanding TESL pre-service teachers’ prior experiences, 2) detecting the challenges of digital gamification, and 3) gauging the benefits of digital gamification. This mixed-method study included a questionnaire for the quantitative phase while semi-structured interviews and reflective writing were applied for the qualitative phase. The questionnaire was administered to forty pre-service teachers and five of them were chosen to be interviewed and to write their reflective writing. Data from the questionnaire were analysed descriptively while data from the semi-structured interviews and reflective writing were analysed thematically. The findings of this study may help TESL pre-service teachers widen their perspectives towards digital gamification. Thus, this study is significant as it may motivate educators to implement digital gamification in their lessons.

SOPHIA TSEN PROJECT-BASED LEARNING IN TESL COURSES FOR PRESERVICE TEACHERS ABSTRACT Project-based learning is implemented to encourage students’ performance by accomplishing self-acquiring projects involving real life problems. Past researchers broadly presented the results of teaching gains, motivations, and experiences, but there is limited research on students’ voices in project-based learning. In the learning of core TESL courses of the ‘Program Ijazah Sarjana Muda Perguruan’ in Institutes of Teacher Education, the vision on student-centred learning still appears unclear particularly where it is only documented rather than practised which hinders the application of project-based learning in its curriculum. Without it, the aim of creating future teachers to be self-inquired, imaginative, and creative by the end of courses will not be accomplished. Therefore, a case study which aimed to explore the practices and challenges on project-based learning from pre-service teachers’ point of view was implemented. The participants consisted of six TESL pre-service teachers who had implemented projectbased learning in their courses. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflections. All the data collected were analysed through thematic analysis. The findings from this study may provide in-depth insights on the implementation of project-based learning among pre-service teachers on tertiary level. SOPHIA TSEN PRACTICUM CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED BY TESL PRESERVICE TEACHERS ABSTRACT The practicum is extensively recognised as an impetus in creating professional pre-service teachers. Despite a well-defined English language teaching curriculum pertaining to practicum, there is a significant gap in the transmission of learnt theory into practice. It has ultimately challenged the pre-service teachers to execute real lessons through reflective practice. Thus, this study aims to: 1) identify the challenges of TESL pre-service teachers during practicum, 2) explore the strategies used to overcome the challenges, and 3) discover their opinions on the learnt theories in managing the practicum. Ten TESL pre-service teachers who are undergoing practicum were chosen as the participants of this case study. Qualitative data were collected through semistructured interview questions, daily lesson plan reflections and reflective writing prompts. The collected data were analysed thematically to identify the emerging themes. Acknowledging the challenges in authentic teaching classrooms provide information for educational policymakers to support pre-service teachers’ professional development and impart valuable insights for the TESL pre-service teachers towards practicum. It is necessary for pre-service teachers to fully apprehend the actuality of real-life teaching in schools so appropriate measures can be taken in the face of obstacles during practicum.

It is believed that speaking language anxiety is a combination of fear and hesitancy one feels when speaking the language. Oral anxiety is one of the factors that hinders students' speaking ability and can create an unpleasant learning experience, especially in the context of English as a second language (ESL). Past studies revealed that speaking anxiety has a lot of impacts especially towards their performance. This study is based on educational research focusing on factors that cause oral anxiety and the action that ESL trainee teachers took after experiencing speaking anxiety. A total of 5 trainee teachers participated in this study which are selected through survey. This qualitative study was based on interviews which were later transcribed and analysed in relation to the research questions which are (i) what are the challenges that trainee teachers encountered during their speaking anxiety in classroom and (ii) what are their solutions to overcome their speaking anxiety. Thus, students in Level 2 must master simple sentences appropriate to their level. Hence, the research objectives are to: 1) find out TESL trainee teachers’ recommended strategies to teach simple sentences, 2) discover how TESL trainee teachers’ conduct the strategies they recommended to teach simple sentences, and 3) discover the advantages of using the recommended strategy to teach simple sentences. The case study involves four TESL pre-service teachers chosen by purposive sampling. These participants have undergone practicum and have taught simple sentences to Year 4 pupils. The data is collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. This study may provide pre-service and in-service teachers recommended strategies that are successful to teach simple sentences for Year 4 pupils, at the same time gaining multiple benefits from utilizing strategies in the classroom.

The research participants who have just gone through their first practicum encountered problems in adapting textbooks because they are still considered as beginners. This research presents TESL trainee teachers’ (i) most effective textbook adaptation strategies, (ii) reasons for choosing the textbook adaptation strategies, (iii) effects of the textbook adaptation strategies towards Malaysian primary school pupils. Research questions: (i) What are the most effective textbook adaptation strategies used by TESL trainee teachers during practicum phase 1? As English majors it is compulsory for TESL trainee teachers to have a good command of the language, thus the lack of utilizing the English language during TSLB course group discussions was deemed a concerning issue as TESL trainee teachers rarely use the target language to communicate among each other. According to Carless (2007) the use of mother tongue in the English task based classroom was concerning as the lack in adequate usage of English leads to no improvement of the language. The research questions for this study are (i) What are the factors that influence TESL trainee teachers’ usage of other languages in communicating during TSLB group discussions? and (ii) How the factors affect TESL trainee teachers’ usage of English during TSLB group discussions? Therefore, vocabulary is a knowledge that all language learners need to have a wide range on to ensure they are not left behind from their peers. It is also one of the first steps of language learning especially for young learners. Though enhancing vocabulary is essential in language learning, many pupils struggle with it, especially non-native speakers of English. Pupils with a low range of vocabulary display meager academic accomplishment in the four skills of English language which are listening, speaking, reading and writing. This study aims to investigate the strategies, benefits and challenges of using jazz chants among trainee teachers in improving vocabulary acquisition among their pupils. However, the implementation of DGBL in the teaching and learning process depends on the trainee teachers' willingness to use this innovative learning tools. Thus, the aim of this study is to qualitatively explore the perceptions of TESL trainee teachers' towards the use of DGBL in teaching vocabulary. This includes 1) TESL trainee teachers' experiences with the usage of DGBL, 2) identifying the challenges of DGBL, and 3) discovering the potential benefits of DGBL. The participants were composed of a total of four TESL trainee teachers of PISMP June 2020 intake who had undergone practicum Phase 1. Data are collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective writing which were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings of this study may provide in-depth insights on the perceptions of trainee teachers using DGBL to teach vocabulary in the primary ESL classroom. DARAINI BINTI OYOT A CASE STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF SCAFFOLDING TO PROMOTE HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILL ABSTRACT In the present study, the socio-cultural learning theory and scaffolding are used as the theoretical basis to study the effect of scaffolding in teaching the primary school pupils. After nearly two years of online learning declared by the Malaysia’s Ministry of Education, some students have lost their chance to properly develop their HOTs ability as teachers unable facilitate any lesson accurately through the screen (Kum et al., 2021). Hence, the focus of the study was on the effects of scaffolding on the pupils’ higher order thinking skills ability. Three participants which are teachers within the teaching experience range of 5-15 years and are from TESL educational backgrounds. The teachers’ opinions and responses were gathered through interview and questionnaire to determine the effects as well as the extent of scaffolding have towards the development of higher order thinking skills, then observations were conducted to strengthen the data collected. Most of the participants found the activities conducted through scaffolding technique supportive toward the lesson goals and learning objectives. Nearly all of them reported positive improvements in HOTs element, which resulted from the implementation of scaffolding technique in the lesson. VICTOR VINCENT SUPERVISOR: MS. This study is conducted by focusing around students’ perception of online games, students’ communication experience in online games as well as their motivation to learn English through online games. There are 6 objectives of this study which are to determine the difference between daily time spent based on gender, difference between reasons playing online games based on gender, difference between students’ perception on online games based on gender, difference between students’ communication experience in online game based on gender, correlation between students’ perception and motivation to learn English through online games and lastly correlation between students’ communication experience and their motivation to learn English through online games. This study is a descriptive survey research which will use questionnaires to acquire data regarding students’ gender, daily time spent, reasons playing online games, perception, communication experience and motivation to learn English through online games among form 2 secondary schools’ students from 3 different school around Kota Belud town area. There will be 125 students of form 2 participate in this survey from all the schools that have been chosen for this study. The learning method has outspread throughout schools around Malaysia since the 2020 pandemic. Design of mixed methodology is used in providing extensive of trainee teachers’ perceptions about blended learning in the matter of effectiveness of its usage. Results from questionnaire revealed that 82.7% (N=29 participants) intended to use online learning approach but mostly clings up with accessibility issues such as internet connectivity. The case study aims on beholding the suitability of this method associating with trainee teachers’ experiences.

As English is one of the pivotal courses in compulsory education, Chinese Malaysian students are liable to produce error during their language acquisition phase. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the language interference especially on exploring the effects and the reasons of the language interference in speaking English as a second language among Chinese undergraduate students of Institute Teacher of Education Kent Tuaran of Malaysia. The study employed snowball sampling and involved 6 participants that speaks Mandarin as their first language. This study implemented a qualitative approach to gather data in which semi-structured interview and observational fieldnotes were utilized. Qualitative findings were supported by the data triangulation. The effects and reasons of L1 interference is explored through thematic analysis. From the findings, the L1 interferences committed by the students has been classified into four themes which are phonological, syntactic, semantic, and morphological interferences. Moreover, the study also unveils the major reasons behind these interferences were lack of opportunities for practice and limited vocabulary repertoire. SOPHIA TSEN MENTORING EXPERIENCES OF PRACTICUM MENTORS IN A PRIMARY SCHOOL ABSTRACT During school-based practicums, pre-service teachers are regularly mentored by experienced teachers. Despite the fundamental role mentors play in moulding future teachers, existing research has predominantly focused on the practicum experiences of pre-service teachers, particularly in TESL. To fill in the gap, this case study addressed three research objectives: 1) to explore the practices employed by TESL mentors, 2) to expound the challenges encountered by TESL mentors, and 3) to gauge the solutions proposed by TESL mentors. Three TESL mentors at a primary school in the district of Tuaran were selected through purposeful sampling to participate in this research. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and autobiographical narratives. The collected data were then analysed thematically. The findings illustrated that mentors consistently adopted effective mentoring practices to elevate the teaching competencies of their mentees. Despite the internal and external challenges encountered, mentors remained steadfast in their commitment to their mentoring role as they proposed solutions that may streamline the mentoring process at both the micro and macro levels. The findings may be valuable for programme administrators seeking to optimise mentorship. Therefore, the research is significant as it may offer an in-depth understanding of how TESL mentors navigate the complexities of school-based practicums.

This issue should be treated seriously because capitalisation errors bring about numerous negative effects. Nevertheless, limited studies have treated English language teachers’ perspectives on causes and solutions to capitalisation errors in much detail. This qualitative case study bridges the gap by discovering the causes of capitalisation errors and exploring the solutions to minimise capitalisation errors from the perspectives of primary school English language teachers. Five National-type Chinese Primary School English language teachers from Tuaran took part as the participants. The data was collected through one-on-one interview and reflective writing with the use of one-on-one interview questions and reflective writing prompts. Thematic analysis was utilised to analyse the data collected. The findings discovered that carelessness, unfamiliarity with capitalisation rules, weak letter recognition, neglecting the importance of capitalisation and overgeneralisation are the causes of capitalisation errors. To minimise capitalisation errors, the participants posited ten solutions including different methods, various classroom activities and several teaching materials. Therefore, the discovery of the causes and solutions to capitalisation errors from the perspectives of English language teachers can bring rich insights to educators. SOPHIA TSEN MULTIMEDIA INTEGRATION IN TEACHING ENGLISH AMONG TESL PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS ABSTRACT The advancement in technology has brought significant transformation in 21st-century education, specifically multimedia that aims to create a rich and engaging experience for pupils by providing abundant information, ideas, or messages in the combined power of various media formats. Nonetheless, abundant research has established the low integration of multimedia among in-service teachers, but limited research has been presented on the TESL pre-service teachers’ multimedia integration. To fill in the gap, this case study explored three research objectives which encompass the frequency of multimedia integration, challenges and strategies for improvement in integrating multimedia by TESL pre-service teachers in teaching English. The frequency of integration was collected from 60 respondents through a questionnaire and the data were analysed through descriptive analysis. Besides, the data pertaining to the challenges and strategies for improvement in multimedia integration were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective writing from five participants who were selected through purposive sampling. The data collected were analysed thematically and presented in the findings. The findings may provide beneficial insights for educators to incorporate multimedia-assisted teaching in schools. Therefore, the research is significant as it enriches educational stakeholders’ understanding of multimedia integration from the view of pre-service teachers.

Recognising that vocabulary plays a pivotal role in achieving proficiency in the English language, this qualitative research study explores the English vocabulary learning with a specific focus on the pupils’ preferable vocabulary learning strategies within the context of a rural primary Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) located in north of Sabah, Malaysia. In this study, five high-proficiency Year 6 pupils are purposively sampled to uncover their nuanced preferences and practices in vocabulary acquisition. This study projects the research objectives of (i) To explore the preferred vocabulary learning strategies applied by pupils in learning new vocabulary words, and (ii) To gauge the reasons of pupils applying the preferred vocabulary learning strategies in learning new vocabulary words. This research has employed the data collection methods of individual semi-structured interviews and diaries writing. SOPHIA TSEN THE USE OF TIKTOK IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING AMONG MALAYSIAN PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS ABSTRACT TikTok provides real-world language use and context-rich nuances for English language learning. The application offers language learning knowledge through concise and creative videos and personalised algorithms. This research is conducted to determine the percentage of pre-service teachers who use TikTok for English language learning, to discover the strategies, and to explore their perceptions of using TikTok in English language learning. The study used an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. The quantitative sampling consisted of 675 students from an institute of teacher education in Sabah, and the qualitative data involved five participants selected from the quantitative phase using criterion sampling. The quantitative data were analysed descriptively, while the qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis. The study found that the use of TikTok in English language learning is relatively high among pre-service teachers, and most participants reported improvements in their English language skills since using TikTok for language learning. Besides, the qualitative data also revealed that the students engage with local and native contents and creators on TikTok to learn English, and they perceive TikTok as a valuable language learning tool. Thus, TikTok has the potential to be a highly beneficial resource for enhancing proficiency in the English language.

However, recent APTIS test results show that the listening test has the lowest average score among other skill tests. This contribute to the inefficiency of other skills. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore (i) the factors that cause low listening comprehension competency during the APTIS listening test and (ii) ways for improvement. The research questions include: (i) What are the factors affecting the low listening comprehension competency in the APTIS test among TESL trainee teachers? (ii) What are the strategies that can improve the low listening comprehension competency in the APTIS test among TESL trainee teachers? A total of five trainee teachers at an institution in the west coast division of Sabah were involved in this study. Semi-structured interview and document analysis methods is used to collect data. The identification of factors that result in low listening comprehension is based on the analysis of TESL trainee teachers' experiences during the APTIS listening test through reflective diary and semi-structured interview using thematic analysis. SOPHIA TSEN TLEARNING STRATEGIES AMONG CEFR BAND C TESL PRESERVICE TEACHERS ABSTRAK The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has been introduced in the Roadmap for English Language Education 2015-2025 blueprint by the Ministry of Education Malaysia. TESL pre-service teachers are required to attain a Band C in selected government-approved English proficiency tests in order to graduate and teach English in school. However, some TESL pre-service teachers struggle to achieve a CEFR Band C despite their academic training. Previous studies have indicated that effective learning strategies may significantly enhance English proficiency. Therefore, a case study was employed, aiming to investigate: 1) different learning strategies, and 2) how the strategies help improve linguistic competencies. An in-depth exploration was done on five TESL pre-service teachers who have achieved a Band C. Data were collected through semi-structured interview using online medium, and reflective writing. The data collected were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings highlight the effectiveness of varied learning strategies, and the importance of tailored strategies for learners aspiring to attain advanced language proficiency levels. Ultimately, a comprehensive understanding of the learning strategies utilized by pre-service teachers at elevated language proficiency levels may contribute to the cultivation of competent and proficient TESL educators.
