German Championship Halter Grand Champion - Ole’s Twister & Constanze Schöner Schwarzenbeck After a long Covid break, it was finally time again for the German Championships. It was the 13th time that the championship took place at Josef’s Walkaway Farm in Wemding, Germany. The Show took place June 8th through the 11th, Exhibitors across Germany and the Netherlands made their way to Wemding to show in front of the honorable Judge Leah Boyd from Murfreesboro, TN. 26 Horses made their appearance during the 4 Day Event with overall 287 Entries in the different Classes. Additional to Tennessee Walking Horses the European Foxtrotter Association joined the event during Friday and Saturday for their High Point Show while about 50 Dogs were present for the Landscape Boerboel Show and SABBS Appraisal all 4 days. Probably the greatest thing about the German Championship was that 8 proud youth riders showed their skills. This is the first big Horse Show in Europe to date, where so many youth riders participated. On Thursday morning there was an Exhibitors meeting and a small prep talk with judge Leah Boyd, show management and Announcer Susanne Werner and the participants. Afterwards, it was finally time to start on the oval track with the qualifications in the English Rail classes and after a short break, the evening session of the qualifying Western Rail classes in the Barefoot, All Day, Country and Trail Pleasure divisions began. Friday morning belonged to the Showmanship, Halter and Model classes, where the first Grand Champions were already crowned. Dressage, TWH over Fences provided variety on Friday afternoon, before the evening continued with Youth, Equitation and the first Grand Championship Rail classes under a beautiful sunset on the oval. Above: Obstacle Trail Mariska Hoogesteger Below: Youth Champions Saturday morning provided fun and excitement for spectators and exhibitors in Barrel Race, Pole Bending, Western Dressage as well as the Obstacle Trail which consisted of complete natural trail obstacles and provided great competition for competitors in the sunshine outdoors. In the late afternoon, Grand Champions continued to be crowned in the Rail classes and in the Champagne/Water Glass class and Ride a Buck, the competitors once again showed that Tennessee Walking Horses are the horses with the smoothest gaits in the world. At the final session on Sunday morning, competitors showed up and showed out in the Lead Line, Egg & Spoon, Youth and Western Rail classes Grand Championships and the Grand Championship Canter Stake class. Congratulations to all participants and many thanks to TWHBEA and all supporting helpers without whom, the championship could not have taken place. A Legacy of Triumph Justified Honors and the Baum Family When Dr. Jim and Lisa Baum stepped into the winner’s circle after the final class of the 2022 Celebration, it was not the first time they had won back-to-back world championships. In fact, Lisa had just ridden Strike to the title for the second year in the Owner-Amateur Ponies World Grand Championship on Friday night and Dr. Baum and Do Right had captured the Owner-Amateur Park Performance World Grand Championship on Thursday night for the second time. What more could you ask? How about a second World Grand Championship? By Mary Beth Pruett The crowd roared its approval as Justified Honors, ridden by John Allan Callaway, took the spotlight ride around the big oval, repeating their 2021 victory and joining the rarified ranks of horses winning two World Grand Championships. John Allan became only the eighth trainer in the history of the John Allan Callaway & Justified Honors Celebration to win back-to-back world titles. at the 2021 National Celebration 23 The Voice • August 2023

Originally from the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, the Baums made their way to Middle Tennessee in the early 1970s. Dr. Baum inherited a love for the Tennessee Walking Horse from his parents Leo and Jean Baum. Beginning with trail riding, the family soon developed the itch for showing and bought their first show horse. That one horse led to a whole string of show horses and a strong involvement in the Tennessee Walking Horse business. Jean, who continued showing until the age of 91, served on the Walking Horse Owners’ Association board and was a Walking Horse Report correspondent. She was inducted into the Celebration Hall of Fame in 2008. The family’s love of horses also led son and daughter Jim and Karen Baum into careers as veterinarians, Karen with a practice in Virginia and Jim just outside Shelbyville, Tennessee. The third sibling, Jeff Baum, operates three airports and has an air charter business. Horses also led to Jim’s introduction to Lisa, who showed dressage, hunter-jumpers and Arabians. After being introduced to the Tennessee Walking Horse, she wasted no time becoming a fixture in the walking horse show ring. Justified Honors came into the Baum’s lives in 2020. Bred by Dr. Robert C. Watkins of Chicago Heights, Illinois, sired by Honors and out of Maypine’s Doll Baby, the black stallion was originally named Maypine’s Chauncy. “Dr. Watkins had a really good friend whose name was Chauncy,” Lisa explains. “He died right before this colt was born and that’s where the name came from. Even though Dr. Jim & Lisa Baum The Voice • August 2023 24

“We were so lucky to get that horse,” says Lisa Baum. “We had seen him working, and John Allan and Bill told us that if we wanted him, it was time to buy him.” The purchase was made in the spring with plans for Jim to show him in the amateur division. Those plans changed when they realized they had a potential World Grand Champion on their hands. “Jim showed him for the first time in Columbia,” says Lisa. “It was pouring rain and it was a big class, but Chauncy won in a unanimous decision.” The couple changed course, turning his show ring career over to John Allan. Their confidence was well founded, as he went on to be a three-year-old world champion stallion and a fouryear-old world champion stallion. When it was time to decide between showing in the Junior World Grand Championship in 2021 or going for it all in the World Grand Championship, the Callaways and the Baums met and took a vote. They decided to go for it. In winning the stake class as a four-year-old, he joined the ranks of such horses as I Am Jose, Shaker’s Shocker and Sun’s Delight. “It’s still hard to explain,” Lisa remembers, “how we felt that night. We never the name was changed before we bought him, I still call him Chauncy, out of respect for his breeder’s friend.” Chauncy had limited saddle time as a two-year-old and did not show that year. But his talent and ability caught the attention of Dr. Baum as he was making veterinary visits to Twin Oaks, where the Callaways have their training operation. had dreamed of having a horse win the big stake class. I get shivers just talking about it, even now. I remember sitting there when those lights went out, and I thought he had won. But you just don’t know what was written on those judges’ cards.” The win in 2021 led to a full breeding schedule at Sugar Creek Farm, with the champion making the trip three or four times a week from Twin Oaks, where he continued in training. His championship form only got better during the 2022 show season, as he made numerous appearances in exhibitions. Demand from the crowds grew for the five-year-old to make another Celebration appearance and when the gate opened for the qualifying class for the big stake in 2022, his appearance was greeted with a roar. The last night of the Celebration was a wet one, with on and off rain, lighting and a deluge that delayed the show for over an hour. The wet track was no deterrent to John Allan and Justified Honors, and he once again wore a horseshoe of roses out of the ring. “It was a little strange in the winners circle,” says Lisa. “The owners from the previous year are supposed to present the trophy to the new winners. So they just handed me the trophy and said I would have to present it to myself!” She goes on, “Something that is so special to me is our grandson Bentlee, Jacob’s son, who accompanied the family to the presentation. It brings tears to my eyes to see him – the fourth generation of this family to enjoy horses and horse shows. I’m glad he gets to experience it. After all, how many people ever get to win a World Grand Championship?” Lisa Baum, Justified Honors, trainer John Allan Callaway & Dr. Jim Baum The Voice • August 2023 26

Justified Honors continues his breeding career at Sugar Creek Farm, where his first crops of colts are hitting the ground. Stud manager David Williams says, “We haven’t seen a stallion like Justified in a very long time. The ease at which he performs is enjoyable to watch. His structure is the main reason it’s so easy for him and we are seeing this structure in his foals. The length of leg, the up-right head set and proportional length of neck, his focus in the show ring. With each performance you think he could be no better, but he raises the bar every time he enters the ring. When he won in 2021, he was still an immature horse in structure and attitude. The maturation of his body and mind contributes to the flawlessness of his performances. We are very excited at Sugar Creek to see the development of his offspring. We have high expectations.” The big question in everyone’s mind is whether Justified Honors and John Allan will take a shot at making their repeat win a three-peat. Lisa is cautious but hopeful. “It will be a team decision,” she says firmly. “If the stars line up and he’s feeling good and working good, we may show him,” she said. Time will tell, and the question will be answered on the first Saturday night in September when the organist plays “Flat Walk Boogie” and the horses make their entrance into the big oval. “he raises the bar every time he enters the ring” 27 The Voice • August 2023
