Remaining versatility classes began on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. A new event took place Saturday evening, created by the Maiden Championship Committee. The All-Day Pleasure Challenge was designed as a test of skill and correctness of the Junior All Day Pleasure horse. Twentyone entries competed in the inaugural event, which was divided into three parts: pleasure, precision pattern, and conformation. As an added twist, each piece of the competition was officiated by a separate judge, and the other two judges were sequestered. A $1,000 purse was paid out to the top five in the competition. Manna Pro and Farm Vet provided extra incentives with gifts for exhibitors in these classes. Myers Caudill won the WHOA Academy 11 and Under Championship, while Virginia Caudill took home top honors in the 17 & under division. The Academy program was started by WHOA and TWHBEA in 2003 to encourage more instructors to offer lessons to beginner riders and to help beginners get a taste of showing without immediately buying a horse. Academy shows are held in the early spring, with the championships held at the International each year. A full slate of halter classes was held throughout the show, showcasing weanlings, yearlings, and mature horses. The Weanling Championship was won by Lynn Womack and Sweet Georgia Brown J&R, sired by Master of Jazz. Yearling champion was Josephine’s Time, by Walk Time Charlie, and shown by Robert Nelms. Robert Nelms was also the winning handler of the Model Championship with Back in the Saddle Again, while Keegan Meadows took home the championship in the In Hand division with Carolina Chrome. 2023 was the fifth year for the Trail Pleasure Maiden Championship, a class for two-year-old trail pleasure making their first appearance in the show ring. Sixty-four young horses were entered, leading to a four way split on Wednesday to determine the 28 finalists. The championship itself was held on Friday night to the cheers of a big crowd, who The Voice • August 2023 142

The International also included classes for Spotted Saddle Horses and Racking Horses. One of the most exciting classes of the week was the nine horse speed racking class, held on Thursday and won by Highways Wild Rose and Finley Grace Brooks. Youth Best of Show winners were Tucker Johnson and Kool Vibes, owned by Tucker and Tanner Johnson. Amateur Best of Show went to He’s Off the Wall and Patty Gibb, and Joe Lester rode She’s Charlie’s Girl to Best of Show for Anne Evans. In his first year as WHOA’s executive director, Mark Taylor was pleased with the 2023 International. “The show was a great success with 1917, entries which is up 6% over last year. And the number of horses, 510, participating was up 20% over last year. Also, all stalls and camper spots were sold out this year for the first time.,” he said. “To say we are grateful is an understatement. We couldn’t have done this without all the great Sponsors, Owners, Trainers and the many volunteers that make this show possible each and every year. Thank you to everyone who participated!” 143 The Voice • August 2023

Koen Morris World Versatility Championship Feature: By Mary Beth Pruett It’s a bit like something out of a storybook. A fourteen-year-old boy and a treasured horse compete for the first time in the TWHBEA World Versatility Championship and walk away with a cluster of blue ribbons, the Youth High Point Belt Buckle and the Overall High Point Championship, beating out the adults for the custom saddle. That was the story of Koen Morris, of Lawrenceville, Virginia, and Allen’s Danni Delight at the 2023 World Versatility Championship. “It was a weekend he will never forget,” says mom Tori Morris. “It was his first buckle and his first trophy saddle. We can’t describe how excited we all are.” Koen caught the eye of everyone at the World Versatility Championship with his show ring presence and the quiet focus he displays with his horses. on his own, to being in the room last night to hear all his hard work pay off was amazing and well deserved,” she said. Koen’s parents found a horse for him, Lined Up Jade, in 2020 and they made their show ring debut in 2021. Koen had participated in several sports over the years – a little golf, some basketball – but the horses became his laser focus. “It’s a 24-hour, 7 days a week passion now,” says the show not only in the youth division, but also proved he was not afraid to take on the adults in Western riding, basic reining and dressage, where he consistently was in the top ribbons. Growing up on a farm, Koen has always loved animals. He first sat on a horse when he was just able to sit up but did not start taking lessons until four years ago. After his third lesson with Jaimee Clary of Walkin’ with Faith Farm, the instructor told his parents, Kendall and Tori, that riding was what he is meant to do. From that moment, his hard work has brought him to be the calm, confident rider he proved to be. Jaimee was present at the awards presentation at the World Versatility Championship. “Very proud of Koen and all his hard work he has put in over the years! To see his journey unfold from day one, take his passion and start working hard at home Koen on Lined Up Jade with ???? at his first horse show Koen & Lined Up Jade Koen & Allen’s Danni Delight preparing for their WVC performance The Voice • August 2023 146

his mom. His early experiences reinforced Koen’s passion for horses and he began to think about a young horse to bring along himself. It was love at first sight when he saw a two-year-old mare at the Tarheel Classic at Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina. Jennifer Batts was working She’s Taking Daddy’s Cash (Bella) in one of the outside rings. “He said this is the horse I want,” says Tori. “When we called Jennifer, she wanted us to come visit before deciding if she was a good fit for him.” They did purchase Bella, but Jennifer had another idea for Koen. “She wanted to put Koen on Allen’s Danni Delight so he could get experience on a seasoned horse, especially in versatility classes.” Pairing Danni and Koen turned out to be a master stroke, leading them on a whirlwind of blue ribbons and championships in 2022. “Success with Danni has improved his skills so much,” says Tori. “He had never even cantered a horse until he started riding her. And now it has changed the way he works with Bella on his own.” He is now working on Bella’s canter with an eye toward versatility events with her. Good placings in the 2023 World Versatility Championship and the International indicate that his work and experience is paying off. For three weeks in summer, Koen helps Jaimee Clary with her Walkin’ with Faith summer horse camp, passing on skills he has learned to other young riders. He is also an honor roll student and class president at Brunswick Academy in Lawrenceville. In his spare time, he likes to wake surf at nearby Lake Gaston. Behind the scenes, Koen has the support of both parents, who seem almost astonished by his accomplishments. “We can’t thank Jennifer and Gary Batts enough,” says Tori, “for trusting us with Danni. We owe it all to all the people who have helped him become a horseman.” Koen helping a younger rider at the Walkin’ with Faith summer horse camp Koen & Allen’s Danni Delight with Gary and Jennifer Batts 147 The Voice • August 2023

TWHBEA World Versatility Championship Below: All of the 2023 TWHBEA World Versatility Championship High Point Champions and Reserve Champions The TWHBEA World Versatility Championship began in the mid 1990’s, the brainchild of longtime pleasure vice president Marietta Gambrell. She envisioned the best horses in the country gathering in Tennessee to compete for championship honors in all the divisions offered by TWHBEA’s versatility program. The 2023 edition of the show kicked off at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro at 8:30am on July 20 with trail classes and continued for two days, finishing on Friday night with the always exciting speed events. Newcomers and seasoned exhibitors competed in 61 classes for more than $8000 in money and prizes. Exhibitors and their families were treated to dinner in the Miller Room on Friday night, served by Rowdy Ranch Catering, followed by the high point awards. First time exhibitor Koen Morris took top honors in the youth division with Allen’s Danni Delight. Reserve was Jalynn Evans and Believable Teen. Jennifer Batts and I Noah Man took the elite division high point buckle while Tracy Pinson and Tuff Night at the Ritz were reserve. High point buckles were provided by the Andy Rippy family and each champion received a check for $500. Reserve champions were awarded $250. By a margin of only two points, the Overall High Point Championship was awarded to Koen Morris, who took home a custom saddle from Walk N Style and $500. Versatility and Trail Vice President Lyn Montgomery was pleased with the show this year. “There was lots of energy in the air,” she said, “and we had the most interest in trail and Tracy Pinson A competitor navigates the gate in the Trail Obstacle class 149 The Voice • August 2023

Marshall County Horseman’s Association Horse Show The Marshall County Horseman’s Association proudly donates the gate proceeds to TWHYA. Pictured: Mark Farrar, Edwina Thomas, Jessica Ozburn, Freda Dean, Barbara Civils, and Carol Wakefield The 47th Annual Marshall County Horseman’s Association Horse Show was held on Friday, July 21, 2023 in Lewisburg, Tennessee. By the time a torrential rainstorm came through late that afternoon, burgers were already on the grill and volunteers were ready to greet the exhibitors and spectators. Even in the rain, people started to arrive and it was “on with the show!” Proceeds from the show benefit several scholarships and other initiatives while donations collected at the gate are donated to the Tennessee Walking Horse Youth Association. Members stood in the rain and collected almost $2,000 in donations that will help fund the scholarships for Youth Medallion winners. After a 45-minute delay, Koufax and Blaise Broccard made their way to the ring to present the colors for the opening ceremony. Thankfully once they made their way through the muddy conditions in the parking area, exhibitors were greeted by a show ring that was in remarkably good condition thanks to the work of Mike Floyd’s crew during the week. With 33 classes and 145 entries, Ross Campbell had a tough job picking the winners, which in several cases included multiple world champions competing against each other. In the final class of the night, Drew Graves made his show ring debut about Mr. Magnifico to claim the championship title. The Two, Three, and FourYear-Old World Grand Champion in 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively is sired by Jose’ Jose’ and out of She’s Lined & Toxic. The stallion is owned by Judy Case of Madison, Alabama. Reserve in the class was Kobe 24, the 2021 Three-Year-Old World Grand Champion, with Chris Helton in the irons for Jimbo Conner of Sevierville, Tennessee. A Big Honor and Ryan Blackburn rounded out the top three for owner Dwight Hopper of Corbin, Kentucky. 155 The Voice • August 2023

Red Carpet Show of the South The 83rd Annual Red Carpet Show of the South was held in Pulaski, Tennessee on July 22, 2023. This historic show, produced by the Pulaski Rotary Club, is a favorite of fans and competitors alike. Earning the support of both this year, the well-attended show featured 149 entries in 28 classes. This support allowed the Rotary Club to raise almost $20,000 that will be used to serve their community through charitable projects in the coming year. The show is considered a proving ground for World Grand Championship contenders. In the past decade, four future World Grand Champions first won a class in Pulaski – sometimes with an amateur rider and other times in the stake class. Honors, Master’s Razzel and Jazz, I’m Mayhem, and I Am Jose’ were all winners of this show in recent history who went on to win the WGC title. With only one entry in the class, it was an easy decision for judge Layne Leverette to Dixie Road and Link Webb were the final winners of the night The Voice • August 2023 156

TWHBEA Summer Sizzler Halter Show The first class of the afternoon, the Mare & Foal class, filled half the ring For the first time since the 1947 Celebration a horse show was held on the field behind the former Shelbyville Central High School. Known as Tate Athletic Field at the time, the property was the site of the first nine years of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. Strolling Jim, Haynes Peacock, Melody Maid, Black Angel, City Girl, Midnight Sun, and Merry Go Boy all won the “Big Stake” there. Merry Go Boy was the last World Grand Champion crowned on this showgrounds and was the first crowned on the new (present) Celebration Grounds. On Sunday, July 30, 2023, 76 years after Merry Go Boy made his championship victory pass on the historic site, Whoopin’ It In Command and The Smooth Criminal were the next ones to make a victory pass as the Mare & Foal winners in the first class of the Summer Sizzler. Ironically Merry Go Boy is the fifth great grandsire of The Smooth Criminal. In addition to some of the industry’s top halter horses, the day was filled with a lot of nostalgia. Many came to be a part of history and enjoy the beautiful afternoon, have some homemade ice cream and get a peak of this year’s halter contenders. Among those in attendance was Amie Boyd Marks, who is the only exhibitor from the first Celebration still living. On The Sly, ridden by Jerry Harris and led by Jerry Williams were second, and Josie And The Pussycats, ridden by Bobby Joe Jones and led by Dr. Roger Richards were third. The show featured 66 entries in 17 classes and was generously supported by many sponsors. Dr. Doyle Meadows judged the two showmanship classes and Mike Carpenter marked the cards for the rest. Then imagine that the new owner went out and used that car in an irresponsible way – accumulating parking tickets and traffic violations. You go to your mailbox one sunny morning a year or so later and are surprised with a court summons resulting from those unpaid tickets and violations for which you, as the owner of record on that car, are now responsible. Your insurance rates on the vehicles actually in your possession skyrocket, your name appears in the local police blotter and you’re faced with miles and miles of red tape that must be straightened out. Of course, they are designed to prevent this from happening, at least when it comes to vehicles. And, even if there weren’t laws, most informed and responsible people would make sure that a car that they sold was transferred out of their name. However, in the horse industry, there are numerous cases of horses remaining in a seller’s name for years to come after the sale. This practice of buyers not transferring horses into their names makes sellers vulnerable to various scenarios that mirror the example above. Therefore, it is in the best interest of all sellers to take care of the transfer themselves. This is the best way to protect their interests and prevent future entanglements involving Horse Protection Act violations, unpaid fees and anything else that may be impacted by inaccurate ownership records. Proactive sellers who take the initiative to transfer sold horses out of their names are taking a huge step toward protecting their interests. Surely it is worth a little bit of paperwork and a reasonable fee to protect one’s name and to keep from having to mount a defense against violations incurred without your actual involvement. Horses are large investments with significant risks; it only makes sense to do everything in your power to protect yourself by ensuring that your responsibilities are limited to horses that are actually in your possession. –Sarah Gee Transfering Your Horses Registration
