TWHBEA NEWS TWHBEA Welcomes Tori Hill TWHBEA Supports Western Dressage Association World Championship In mid-July, TWHBEA added a new team member to the fold. Following the retirement of Paulette Ewing, Tori Hill was brought on as the new Graphic Designer and Production Manager. While a great deal of her responsibilities includes the VOICE Magazine, she’ll also provide support to all TWHBEA projects and initiatives. Though new to the Tennessee Walking Horse industry, she is excited to learn more about the breed, our association, and its members. She’s a graduate of Freed-Hardeman University and has nearly a decade of design and marketing experience. She currently lives in Pulaski, Tennessee with her husband and their many furry and feathered friends. TWHBEA is proud to be an alliance partner of the Western Dressage Association of America (WDAA) and a sponsor of their World Championship Show. The sponsorship of the show includes two world champion divisions and the Tennessee Walking Horse breed high score. “This is part of our continuing effort to recognize our members where they are excelling with their horses, and this is definitely a discipline where they are excelling,” says Lyn Montgomery, TWHBEA Vice-President of Trail and Versatility. The WDAA World Championship Show is scheduled for September 26-30, 2023 at Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma. For more information visit wdaaworldshow.org. Steve Smith Inducted Into Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame TWHBEA Past President and Master Breeder, Steve Smith was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 22, 2023. Smith was recognized for his sports achievements in baseball and Tennessee Walking Horses. He’s been a lifelong horseman, winning 10 World Championships as a rider, including the 1992 Amateur World Grand Championship title. His farm, Ravenswood, has bred, foaled, and raised eleven Tennessee Walking Horses that have won a combined 32 World Championships. “Stephen Smith’s connection to Middle Tennessee covers the last six decades, from his time at Battle Ground Academy, to MTSU, to the Tennessee Walking Horse industry, Stephen has made an impact throughout his life,” said Brad Willis, Executive Director of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. “To this day he continues to contribute his time and efforts to athletics, and we are thrilled to be able to honor him as part of our 2023 Class.” Smith has continued to give back to his passions, serving multiple terms as President of TWHBEA, Chairman of the MTSU Foundation, member of the Williamson County Sports Authority, and as board member of Music City Baseball. Maiden Incentive Winners TWHBEA NEWS TWHBEA offered a couple of monetary incentives for this year’s International Maiden Championship, held on July 28 in conjunction with the International Grand Championship Walking Horse Show. “The Maiden” is for two-year-old Trail Pleasure horses that have not been previously shown under saddle. The horses made their showring debut in the preliminary class on Wednesday night. Out of 64 entries, 28 were selected to return for the championship. TWHBEA offered $500 to the breeder of the champion and another $500 to the owner of the highest-placing entry that was already nominated for the National Futurity. Jalapeno and Joe Lester claimed the championship title for owners Kimberly and Perry Walden. Jalapeno is by Jose’ Jose’ and out of Drop Right In. He was bred by Kasey Kesselring, who will receive the $500 incentive check. Although several entries in the class have been nominated since, the highest-placing entry that was nominated for the National Futurity at the time they showed is Sister Rowdy. Owners Jack and Patricia Pirkle will receive the $500 incentive check. Sister Rowdy is part of the Middle Tennessee State University breeding program and is sired by Rowdy Rev and out of Justa Innocent Dare. Board Resignations in Kentucky and Washington The Executive Committee has accepted the resignations of Spencer Benedict, Carrie Benedict, and Linda Arnold. Carrie and Spencer Benedict resigned as directors from Kentucky following their recent move to Tennessee. Carrie’s seat went to the alternate in that election - Sheree Bollinger, who will complete her term through 2024. Spencer’s seat will be filled in this year’s election; his term lasts through 2024. The top three vote-getters in Kentucky will serve full three-year terms and the fourth will serve the remainder of Spencer’s term. Linda Arnold has resigned as director from Washington. There was no alternate in her election so the seat will be filled in this year’s election to serve through 2025. TWHBEA NEWS 2023 Gaited Experience Canada Submitted by: Lisa Adams-Bozak The 2023 Gaited Experience will definitely be one to remember. This year we had Justice Carter from California and Denise Bader from Germany visit. We honestly could not have asked for two better complimented trainers that have never worked together before. Each trainer had a pointed goal with every horse. I know I’m speaking for myself but I have no doubt in my mind that all the riders’ goals were met over the three days. I also know that they learned way more then they ever could have expected. For me personally, I took two youngsters with few rides on them and I came back with new horses. Couldn’t have done it without them We had 21 horses and riders go through the three-day clinic. I know I was tired; I can’t even imagine how Justice and Denise felt. They continued to be knowledgeable and professional every minute. Their uncanny ability to support every horse and rider pair is unmatched. Watching them work together on separate sides of the arena was definitely reassuring and inspiring. None of this would have even been possible without the USLG funding and TWHBEA. I really hope we can have future events like this. I am honoured to have been a part of this and excited to see the growth. 193 The Voice • August 2023

Alabama Walking Horse Ladies Auxiliary Show Jamie Lawrence directed Holyfields My Papa to the championship title for owner Tim Tucker of Cullman, Alabama Photo by Sid Abernathy In recent years the Alabama Walking Horse Ladies Auxiliary (AWHLA) has held their annual horse show in the indoor Celebration Arena in Priceville, Alabama, but the closure of the arena forced them to find a new home. The group selected Baileyton Park in nearby Baileyton, Alabama as the site for their 12th annual show. Traditionally held in May, that was the plan for this year until Mother Nature intervened. Without the luxury of an indoor arena, the show was rescheduled for July 28. Ryan Gannon of McMinnville, Tennessee judged the 31 classes on the schedule. Although temperatures dropped to a comfortable level when the sun went down, unusually hot weather and temperatures nearing 100 degrees during the week caused several exhibitors to make the decision not to show. Thankfully the show was fully sponsored which will allow the AWHLA the continued ability to fund a scholarship and donate to Smile-A-Mile, an Alabama charity that helps those in the State who are affected by childhood cancer thrive during treatment and the years beyond. With wins in Huntsville and Arab so far, Holyfields My Papa and Jamie Lawrence earned their third championship title in their home state this year when they claimed the tri-colors at the AWHLA show. The champion, sired by Holyfield and out of Pasadoble’, by Jose It Ain’t So, is owned by Tim Tucker of Cullman, Alabama. Taking home the reserve honors was Jason Bourne, ridden by Gary Wayne Smith and owned by Barry George. The Voice • August 2023 196

They will also participate in a panel discussion where youth will have a chance to ask them questions. The lunch will be held in the Hall of Fame Club inside of Cooper Steel Arena on The Celebration grounds. Youth Medallion classes will be offered at various horse shows throughout the year. There will be two divisions, performance and pleasure, each division with its own end-of-year award. Riders will receive points determined by their placings in these two divisions, with the rider accumulating the most points in each division receiving an educational scholarship valued at $500.00. Payout for Medallion classes are a medallion and money as follows $100, $75, $50, $40, $30. Guidelines for the Youth Medallion Classes: • Open to all youth riders, age 17 and under (age as of January 1). • Ownership of the horse is not required. Stallions are not allowed. • Classes are for Flat-Shod and padded Performance Show Horses, performing all three gaits - flat walk, running walk, and canter. • The rider, not the horse, accumulates points awarded for placing and participating in the class.
