I thank my God, who had mercy on me and gave me a chance
to live even today. I am grateful for the added perspective
my experiences with cancer have brought me.

หากเปรียบตะเกียงเป็นที่กำ�บัง คงต้องกล่าวถึง ตะเกียงเจ้าพายุ
(Hurricane lantern or Storm lantern) ที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะสมกับ
ชื่อ คือ มีความทนทานต่อสภาพอากาศที่รุนแรง โดยมีกระจกที่แข็งแรง
สำ�หรับกันการกระแทกหรือการแตก เพื่อป้องกันเปลวไฟในตะเกียงไม่
ให้มอดดับเพราะแรงลมและฝน ส่งผลให้แสงสว่างจากตะเกียงเจ้าพายุ
นิ่งและสงบ แม้อยู่ท่ามกลางลมพายุและมรสุมที่เลวร้าย1

นี่จึงเป็นที่มาของหนังสือ “แสงตะเกียงท่ามกลางเจ้าพายุ” ที่
ข้าพเจ้าเขียนขึ้นจากประสบการณ์ในชีวิตของข้าพเจ้า ด้วยความ
ปรารถนาที่จะส่งต่อแสงตะเกียงแห่งความเชื่อ ความหวัง และความ

Introduction

The flame represents faith, hope, and love.
The lantern represents a shelter and a place of refuge.
The storm represents the cancer that reappears in our

lives.

Darkness represents a treatment period without knowing

what the future holds in store.
A hurricane or storm lantern has a unique characteris-
tic compared to an open flame. As its name suggests, it is
resistant to extreme weather conditions. It has strong glass
to protect against bumps or breaks, and is carefully designed
to prevent the flame within from being extinguished by the
wind and rain. As a result, the light from the storm lantern
will be still and calm even amid the mightiest monsoons1.
This book “Lantern in The Storm” is named after these
attributes. I wrote this story from my personal experience
with the desire to pass on the lantern of faith, hope, and
love in the Lord Jesus Christ to those who may be facing an
unexpected crisis in life. May God be glorified through this
story. Thank you to all relatives and friends who have always
encouraged and prayed for me.

ณ บ้านคานาอัน ใจกลางเมืองจังหวัดฉะเชิงเทรา ประเทศไทย

แตรรถมอเตอร์ไซด์คันหนึ่ง แทรกเสียงการจราจรที่คับคั่งจากถนน
ใกล้เคียง
“ปี้ด ปี้ด” เสียงออดจากมอเตอร์ไซด์ดังไกลมาจากรั้วประตู
ใหญ่หน้าบ้าน
“แก้ว ใครมานะ” กุ้งถามขึ้น เมื่อเห็นน้องแม่บ้านเดินเข้ามา
ในห้องนั่งเล่น พร้อมซองเอกสารใหญ่ในมือ
“บุรุษไปรษณีย์ค่ะ พี่กุ้ง” แก้วตอบ และยื่นซองสีน้ำ�ตาลให้
“ขอบใจจ้ะ” กุ้งรับมา และเมื่อเห็นว่าเอกสารถูกส่งมาจาก
ที่ใด กุ้งก็นึกขึ้นได้ว่าเมื่อประมาณสองสัปดาห์ก่อน เธออยู่ที่โรง
พยาบาลกับแม่ แล้วภาพในอดีตก็ย้อนกลับมาอีกครั้ง
เช้าวันหนึ่งที่สดใสใจกลางเมืองหลวง กุ้งนั่งอยู่ในห้องพักผู้
ป่วยของแม่ ระหว่างที่กำ�ลังรอการอนุญาตของแพทย์ ให้แม่ของ
เธอออกจากโรงพยาบาลได้
“แม่…อิ่มแล้วหรือ แม่ทานยานี่นะ เป็นยาหลังอาหารจ้ะ”
กุ้งพูดกับแม่ของเธอ พร้อมกับยื่นยาที่พยาบาลได้จัดมาให้ในถ้วย
พลาสติกเล็กๆ ใส่มือของแม่เธอ
“บ่ายนี้เราน่าจะได้กลับบ้านกัน เดี๋ยวเช้านี้กุ้งจะลงไปที่แผนก
ตรวจสุขภาพของโรงพยาบาลนะแม่” กุ้งพูดต่อ พร้อมกับช่วยแม่
ให้เอนตัวลงนอน
ไม่นานนัก กุ้งก็เดินออกจากห้องพักคนไข้ และตรงมาที่หน้า
เคาน์เตอร์พยาบาล “คุณพยาบาลค่ะ ดิฉันฝากคุณแม่สักครู่นะคะ
เช้านี้ดิฉันจะลงไปตรวจสุขภาพที่ชั้นล่างค่ะ”

“ได้ค่ะ” พยาบาลคนหนึ่งตอบพร้อมกับยิ้มให้
ตลอดทั้งเดือน กุ้งยุ่งกับการพาแม่เข้าออกโรงพยาบาลหลาย
ครั้งหลายหน จนลืมคิดถึงสุขภาพของตัวเอง ข่าวดีจากหมอเมื่อ
วานนี้ว่า แม่ของเธอสามารถใช้ยามุ่งเป้าสำ�หรับโรคมะเร็งปอด
ระยะแพร่กระจายได้ ทำ�ให้กุ้งหมดห่วงเรื่องแม่ในระดับหนึ่ง เธอ
จึงเริ่มหันมานึกถึงตัวเองอีกครั้ง
ที่แผนกตรวจสุขภาพ กุ้งนั่งรอพยาบาลเรียกอย่างจดจ่อ “สอง
ปีแล้วสินะ ที่ไม่ได้มานั่งอยู่ตรงนี้ หวังว่าจะไม่มีอะไรนะ” เธอรำ�พึง
ในใจ สักครู่หนึ่งแพทย์ได้ตรวจร่างกายกุ้ง และสั่งให้เธอทำ�การ
ตรวจทางห้องปฎิบัติการ ในตอนบ่ายกุ้งก็พาแม่ของเธอกลับบ้าน
วันนี้ กุ้งนั่งอยู่ที่โซฟาในห้องรับแขกและมองดูรายงานผล
ตรวจสุขภาพเล่มหนาในมือ เธอพลิกอ่านทีละหน้าอย่างตั้งใจ แล้ว
สายตาของเธอก็ต้องหยุดนิ่งที่ตรงบรรทัดหนึ่ง
“ผลตรวจอุจจาระเป็นบวก ควรปรึกษาแพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญ”
คิ้วทั้งสองของกุ้งขมวดเข้าหากัน และสีหน้าของเธอเปลี่ยนไปทันที

At Canaan House, near the center of Chachoengsao, Thai-

land, a motorcycle horn interrupts the steady thrum of traffic
from the nearby roads.
“Beep, Beep!” The horn sounded from the direction of
the front gate.
“Kaew, who was it?” Kung asked her housekeeper, who
walked into the living room with a large envelope in her hand.
“It was the postman,” Kaew replied and handed Kung
a brown envelope.
“Thank you,” Kung said. She immediately recognized
the stationary as belonging to the hospital in Bangkok where
Kung had been with her mother two weeks ago. She recalled
the events from the past two weeks.
On a sunny morning in the capital, Kung had sat in her
mother’s hospital room while they awaited her discharge.
“Mom, are you full? If so, please take these medications,”
said Kung as she placed a little plastic cup filled with pills into
her mother’s hand. The nurse had prepared and brought in
the targeted cancer drugs earlier this morning.
“We should be able to go home this afternoon. I will go
down to the outpatient check-up department this morning,”
said Kung while she helped her mother lie down.

Not long after, Kung stepped out of a patient room and
walked straight down to the nurse’s counter. “I am going
downstairs this morning for a check-up. Could you please
attend to my mom as needed?”
“Yes, certainly,” one of the nurses replied with a smile.
All month, Kung had been in and out of the hospital
many times to take care of her mother. She had forgotten to
think about her health. The news from the doctor yesterday
that her mother could use targeted drugs to treat metastatic
lung cancer had given Kung great relief. She began to think
of herself again.
At the health check-up department, Kung had sat anx-
iously waiting for the nurse to call her. “It has been two years
since I was here. Hopefully, all is well,” she told herself. The
doctor had examined her and ordered some laboratory tests,
and then in the afternoon, Kung had taken her mother home.
Today, sitting on the sofa in her living room, Kung looked
at the thick health reports in her hands. She flipped through
each page intently. Then her eyes fixated on one line.
“Occult blood (stool) - Positive. Please consult a medical
professional.” Kung’s eyebrows furrowed. Shock soured her
facial expression.

“ไมท่ ราบว่าดิฉันจะตอ้ งเตรียมตัวอย่างไรบา้ งคะ” กุ้งถามต่อ เมือ่
พยาบาลระบุวันนัดให้แก่เธอ
“งดอาหารหลังเที่ยงคืนนะคะ เมื่อมาถึงคุณจะได้พบกับคุณหมอ
ก่อน แล้วเราจะอธิบายถึงขั้นตอนให้ทราบอย่างละเอียดอีกทีค่ะ”
พยาบาลตอบกุ้งอย่างสุภาพ
“ขอบคุณค่ะ” กุ้งวางสายโทรศัพท์ลง พร้อมกับถอนหายใจ
การที่แม่ของเธอถูกพบว่าเป็นมะเร็งปอดโดยไม่คาดคิด ทำ�ให้
กุ้งรู้ว่าเธอควรตัดสินใจที่จะส่องกล้องเพื่อให้รู้แน่ชัดในคราวเดียว
คนื ถดั มากอ่ นเขา้ นอน กุง้ ไดโ้ ทรหาพอ่ รอ้ บ สามขี องเธอทีป่ ระเทศ
ยูเครนเพื่อบอกให้รู้ว่า พรุ่งนี้เช้าเธอจะไปโรงพยาบาล เมื่อลูกชาย

เพื่อตรวจดูภายในระบบทางเดินอาหารของแม่นะจ๊ะ” กุ้งตอบ พร้อม
กับเปิดภาพให้ลูกๆ ดูว่าอะไรคือ การส่องกล้องตรวจหลอดอาหาร
กระเพาะอาหาร และลำ�ไส้เล็กส่วนต้น (Esophagogastroduode-
noscopy: EGD)2 และการส่องกล้องระบบทางเดินอาหารส่วนปลาย
(Colonoscopy)3

ที่ผ่านมากุ้งไม่เคยปิดบังเด็กๆ ในเรื่องปัญหาสุขภาพของคุณยาย
และครั้งนี้เธอก็ไม่คิดที่จะปิดบังความจริง เรื่องสุขภาพของตนเองกับ
เด็กๆ ด้วยเช่นกัน กุ้งมีหลักในการเลี้ยงดูลูก คือ ประสบการณ์ใดๆ
ในชีวิตที่ต้องพบเจอและเผชิญ คือ การเรียนรู้นอกห้องเรียนที่สำ�คัญ
ของลูกทั้งสองคน
“เรามาอธิษฐานกันนะ ลูกสองคนอธิษฐานเผื่อแม่ได้ไหมจ๊ะ” กุ้ง
หันมาพูดกับเด็กทั้งสอง
“แด่พระเจ้าที่เรารัก ขอให้พรุ่งนี้ คุณแม่ได้รับการตรวจที่ดีจาก
คุณหมอ อาเมน” แม้จะเป็นถ้อยคำ�สั้นๆ จากลูกในวัยเพียงแปด และ
สิบขวบ แต่มันก็ทำ�ให้คนเป็นแม่อย่างเธอ รู้สึกอบอุ่นหัวใจ
กุ้งหันไปจูบหน้าผากและสวมกอดเด็กๆ ทีละคน “ขอบคุณนะลูก
แม่รักเราสองคนนะ”

“Hello, I would like to make an appointment to see

a gastroenterologist. I also want to schedule an upper GI
endoscopy and a colonoscopy on the same day,” said Kung
as soon as the nurse answered the call.
“Could you please tell me how I should prepare myself?”
Kung asked once the nurse gave her an appointment date.
“No eating nor drinking after midnight. When you arrive,
you will meet the doctor first. Then we will explain the pro-
cedure in more detail.” The nurse answered Kung politely.
“Thank you.” Kung ended the call with a sigh. ฺBecause
her mother’s lung cancer diagnosis had caught them by
surprise, Kung felt the need to do a colonoscopy at once.
The next night before bed, Kung called Rob, her husband
in Ukraine, and told him that she was going to the hospital
tomorrow morning. Her two sons quickly turned to their
mom after hearing her talk with their dad.
“Again? Why? How long will you be there, Mom?” the
boys asked. They disliked the idea of separating from their
mother again. A month ago, Kung had hardly been at home.
She frequently traveled to the hospital, staying at least a
week each time to attend to her mother.

“I will not be there for long, Sons. I will be back in the
evening. I am just going there to see the doctor who will
examine the inside of my gastrointestinal tract,” Kung re-
plied. She showed the curious children pictures of esopha-
gogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)2 and peripheral gastrointestinal
endoscopy (colonoscopy)3.
Kung never hid their grandmother’s health issues from
the children. She also planned to be open about her health
to the children this time. Kung has principles in raising chil-
dren. Any life experiences or difficulties that come our way
are essential lessons for her children outside the classroom.
“Sons, Let us pray. Could both of you pray for Mom?”
Kung turned to the two children and asked.
“Dear God, please let Mom have a good visit with the
doctor tomorrow. Amen.” Although it is a simple prayer from
the children, aged eight and ten, it brought warmth to Kung’s
heart. Kung turned to kiss their foreheads and hugged the
children one by one. “Thank you, Sons. I love you both.”

gastroenterologist.
“How are you feeling?” the doctor asked Kung while
examining her abdomen. “Do you feel pain anywhere? Have
you experienced any constipation? Is there any bleeding
when excreting?”
“No, but at times it will feel exhausting,” Kung replied
with a worried look on her face.
“There might be nothing. It could just be hemorrhoids,”
the doctor said hopefully as if wanting to help Kung alleviate
her anxiety.
Not long after, a nurse took Kung to the waiting room
to prepare herself for the procedure. Kung consumed about
two liters of water mixed with a laxative to help her clear
her intestine and colon.
More than two hours passed, and two nurses brought
Kung a purple liquid in a small cup.
“Take this. It will make you feel drowsy. This way, you
will not feel much pain when you have the colonoscopy,”

one of the nurses told her. Then both of them helped to
support Kung as she walked out of the waiting room.
At the endoscopy laboratory, the doctor explained to
Kung that the procedure would begin by inserting a device
to look at her colon. Then, when finished, a smaller device
would be inserted through her mouth to examine the lining
of your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
Even though Kung felt very drowsy throughout the
procedure, she tried to force herself to stay awake. Kung
wanted to see everything that the doctor and nurses saw
on the monitor screen as clearly as possible.
“There it is!” the doctor’s voice called out amid the
silence of all the nurses in the room.
Kung blinked rapidly at the picture she saw on the screen.
“I think you may have to be here for a while.” The doc-
tor’s serious tone caused Kung to feel dull and confused.

“The colonoscopy results are not good. There is a mass in

my colon, which seems malignant,” said Kung over the phone.
Kung’s husband, who was listening on the other end of
the line, was speechless.
“I will stay at the hospital tonight to prepare myself for
surgery in the morning. The surgeon already came to talk
to me a while ago,” Kung continued. She tried to recall the
things the doctor said to her.
“We will open up your abdomen to remove the tumor
and nearby lymph nodes for biopsy4,” he had begun. “Ten
centimeters from each side of the colon where the tumor
was found will also be removed. The good thing is that the
location of the tumor is far from the rectum, which makes
it possible to connect the colon back together. You won’t
need to have a colostomy bag.”
Kung tried to pass on what she had heard from the
doctor to her husband in Ukraine.
“Could you please call the boys and speak to them for
me? Please tell them their mom will not be able to come
home this evening. Tell them I may have to be in the hospital
for a while. Right now, I’m not ready to speak to the boys

myself. I don’t want them to be shocked.” Kung’s voice
trembled as she spoke about her sons.
“Okay, I understand. I will find a way to talk to the boys
myself,” replied Rob, their father, with a heavy heart.
It was a lightning-fast decision, but Kung was determined
to find out about the mass she saw on the monitor. There
was no reason to delay. If the tissue was malignant, she
wanted it to be removed from her body as soon as possible.
Kung sent out a short message to her loved ones. “Dear
brothers, sisters, relatives, and friends, I will undergo a major
surgery tomorrow. Please pray for me.” She believed in the
power of prayer because she had witnessed the power of
faith when her mother was seriously ill.
Kung began to fear tomorrow, but then she remembered
a Bible verse in Philippians 4:13 (NASB), “I can do all things
through Him who strengthens me.” Kung felt strengthened
to fight.
Kung put the phone beside her and lay on the bed,
feeling exhausted and weak. She had not eaten anything
since midnight and would fast tonight as well. No food was
allowed; she had to prepare herself for surgery the next
day.

“Ms. Saowaphaphan... Ms. Saowaphaphan, can you hear

me?” Kung began to blink slowly upon hearing a voice calling
out her name.
“In a moment, we will bring you up to the patient room,”
said one of the nurses in a clear voice.
Kung blinked to convey a response. At that moment,
Kung felt like a drunken person teetering on the edge of
consciousness.
Kung slept for a long time. She had no idea how long
she had slept, but as soon as Kung woke up, she tried to
open her eyes. Kung felt dizzy and nauseous, so she closed
her eyes again. Finally, Kung tried to use her hand to find
the bedside button to call the nurse. When the nurse heard
the call, she immediately came to the room.
“Nurse, I’m feeling dizzy and nauseous,” Kung muttered.
Now she felt like she was lying in a heavily rocking boat.
When the nurse heard the symptoms, she notified the
doctor.

After a while, an anesthesiologist came to explain to
Kung. “The first few days after surgery, you will be in a lot
of pain, so we gave you morphine for pain relief 5.”
“Can I not take it? I can’t stand this kind of nausea and
dizziness. I would rather endure the pain.”
The doctor was silent as if unsure, but when Kung insisted
on it, the doctor agreed. “If you confirm that’s what you
want, we will switch you to a regular pain reliever instead.”
“Yes, Doctor. I confirm. Thank you very much.” Kung
mumbled. She hardly opened her eyes this time.
The next day, her nausea and dizziness began to sub-
side. Eventually, Kung regained her consciousness and began
to sit up by herself. This morning, a gastroenterologist had
stopped by to check on her in the patient room.
“Doctor, how long will I have to have this nasal tube? It
hurts very much when I speak or swallow my saliva.” Kung
asked curiously. She glanced at the small automatic machine
on the floor beside the bed. It connected to a long tube
inserted into one of her nostrils, deep through the throat
into her stomach. A nurse had told Kung that it helped with
bloating after surgery. The machine sucks out liquid or water
from the stomach.

“You need it until your stomach starts working again,
probably another three or four days. In the meantime,
you have to endure. Right now, you will not be able to eat
anything yet, but you can sip small ice chips, and later take
small sips of water,” the doctor said as he examined Kung’s
abdomen. “There might be some bloody stool coming out
initially, but there’s no need to worry about it.”
“Yes,” Kung replied and thought about the implications
of fasting for seven days. She’d had two cesarean sections
before, but this colon resection surgery was much more
painful and far different than her past surgeries.
