ตีสองแล้ว แต่กุ้งก็ยังลุกไปเข้าห้องน้ำ� เธอถ่ายท้องหลาย

รอบตั้งแต่หัวค่ำ�จนแทบไม่ได้นอน แม้เธอจะกินยาช่วยแก้อาการ
ท้องเสียที่หมอเคยสั่งไว้ให้ แต่มันก็ไม่ได้ช่วยให้อาการทุเลาลง
ตลอดทั้งวันตั้งแต่ฟ้าสาง จนกระทั่งเวลาเย็น กุ้งได้แต่นอนซม
อยู่บนเตียง เธอรู้สึกพะอืดพะอมมาก จึงรีบหยิบยาที่ช่วยอาการ
คลื่นไส้และช่วยเคลือบกระเพาะมากิน แล้วดื่มน้ำ�อุ่นตามลงไป
“อย่างน้อยเราก็ไม่ถึงกับอาเจียน เอาน่า อดทนๆ” เธอพยายาม
ให้กำ�ลังใจตัวเอง พร้อมกับสูดหายใจลึกๆ
บนโต๊ะอาหาร กุ้งพยายามกินข้าวต้มที่วางอยู่ตรงหน้า แต่กิน
ได้ไม่กี่คำ�ก็ต้องหยุด เพราะเมื่อมันตกถึงกระเพาะ เธอก็รู้สึกปวด
แสบปวดร้อนขึ้นมาทันที เธอวางช้อนลง และเดินตัวงออย่างช้าๆ
มานั่งลงที่โซฟา
ยาหลังอาหารสำ�หรับเคมีบำ�บัด ยังวางอยู่ตรงหน้าเธอเป็น
เวลานาน กุ้งมองมันด้วยสายตาที่เย็นชาปนเกลียดชัง เธอเมิน
หน้าหนีแล้วหันมาเห็นแม่ที่กำ�ลังมองเธออยู่
“แม่ กุ้งไม่อยากกินมันเลย กินยานี่ทีไร กุ้งรู้สึกว่าข้างในมัน
ร้อนไปหมด มันรู้สึกแย่จนบอกไม่ถูก คล้ายกับว่ากุ้งได้กินยาพิษ
เข้าไป ยังไงยังงั้น” เธอพึมพำ�กับแม่ และเริ่มจะมีน้ำ�ตาคลอ
“แล้วหนูไม่กินยานี่ได้ไหมล่ะลูก” แม่ถามด้วยความสงสาร
จับใจ
กุ้งไม่รู้จะตอบว่าอย่างไร จึงได้แต่นิ่ง

พลบค่ำ� ฟ้ามืดลงแล้ว แต่กุ้งยังคงนอนขดตัวอยู่ที่โซฟาชั้นล่าง

It was two in the morning, but Kung still got up to go to the

bathroom. She had gone to the toilet several times since
early evening, so she had not slept much. Kung had already
taken medicine that her doctor had prescribed to help with
the possible side effects of diarrhea. However, it did not help
to alleviate symptoms.
All day from dawn until evening, Kung could only lie
sleepless on the bed. Then, finally, her insides began to turn,
so she quickly took out a pill that helps with nausea and a
drug to coat the stomach before meals. She washed them
down with a cup of warm water. “At least I didn’t vomit. I
must endure.” Kung tried to lift her spirits. She took a deep
breath.
At the dining table, Kung tried to eat some porridge in
front of her. However, after eating a few bites, she had to stop
because Kung felt a sudden burning pain when the food fell
into her stomach. Kung dropped down her spoon and nearly
crawled to the sofa.
Post-meal pills for chemotherapy sat on the table in front
of Kung for a long time. Then, finally, she looked at it with
cold, hateful eyes. Kung ignored the medicine, then turned
toward her mother, who was looking at her.

“Mom, I don’t want to take these pills at all. Every time
I took them, I felt burning hot inside of me. It felt so bad
that I couldn’t explain it. It was as if I had ingested poison.”
Kung muttered to her mother and began to tear up.
“Can you not take them?” Kung’s mom asked with sym-
pathy.
Kung didn’t know what to answer, so she just kept silent.
It was dusk, the sky had darkened, but Kung was still
curled up on the sofa downstairs of the house. Her stomach
ache grew more intense, and she began to suffer. Kung tried
to turn her body around and hoped this would reduce the
pain. However, no matter what she did, she felt as if someone
was mercilessly twisting her intestines repeatedly. Every part
of her abdomen now seemed to be in open rebellion.
“Please take me to the hospital. I cannot take it any-
more.” Kung said to her sister in a whisper.
Not long after, a car rushed out of the house.

“ตอนนี้ระบบทางเดินอาหารของคุณ มันพังไปหมด กระเพาะ
ลำ�ไส้ทุกส่วนของคุณ ตอนนี้สภาพแย่เอามากๆ” หมอด้านระบบ
ทางเดินอาหาร พูดกับกุ้งแบบตรงไปตรงมาในวันแรก ที่เธอย้ายออก
จากโรงพยาบาลในต่างจังหวัด เพื่อเข้ามารักษาต่อที่โรงพยาบาลใน
กรุงเทพฯ
เจ็ดวันผ่านไปโดยที่ไม่มีอาหารใดๆ ตกถึงท้องของกุ้งเลย แม้
กระทั่งน้ำ�เปล่าที่กลืนลงไปแต่ละอึก ก็ทำ�ให้เธอปวดกระเพาะเหลือ
จะทน ในแต่ละวันกุ้งจึงได้แต่มองดูพยาบาล ที่เข้ามาเปลี่ยนยาและ
น้ำ�เกลือให้ขวดแล้วขวดเล่า เพื่อแข่งกับการสูญเสียน้ำ�ในร่างกาย
เนื่องจากกุ้งขับถ่ายเป็นน้ำ�ไม่หยุดหลายวันติดต่อกัน
แล้ววันที่กุ้งจะต้องรับเคมีบำ�บัดรอบที่สามก็มาถึง
“คุณอยากจะเปลี่ยนสูตรยา เป็นสูตรฟอลฟอกอย่างที่ผมเคย
บอกไว้ก่อนหน้านี้ไหม ผลข้างเคียงจากยาสูตรนี้จะน้อยกว่านะ” หมอ
ด้านมะเร็งถาม เมื่อเห็นสภาพที่อ่อนระโหยโรยแรงของกุ้ง
“ค่ะ คุณหมอ ตกลงค่ะ ดิฉันจะเปลี่ยนสูตรยาค่ะ”
“ถ้าอย่างนั้น หมอจะให้สารอาหารที่มีวิตามินและแร่ธาตุ (Olicli-
nomel N-4 550 E) แก่คุณทางเส้นเลือดนะ จะได้ช่วยให้คุณมีเรี่ยวแรง
ขึ้น หลังจากนั้นก็จะเริ่มให้ยาสูตรใหม่เลย” หมอมะเร็งพูดต่อ
“ขอบคุณมากนะคะ คุณหมอ” กุ้งตอบด้วยเสียงแผ่วเบา

In the patient room of the gastroenterology wing, Kung

watched as the saline slowly dripped out of the IV bottle
hanging by her body.
“Right now, your digestive system is devastated; your
stomach and all of your intestines. Your condition is severe,”
a gastroenterologist told Kung bluntly on the first day she was
transferred into this hospital from another hospital in Kung’s
province.
For the past seven days, Kung had been unable to eat
anything because even each sip of water caused unbearable
pain to her stomach after she swallowed. Day after day, Kung
could only watch the nurses come in and out to change the
medicine and IV. Bottle after bottle compensated for her
water loss due to her non-stop diarrhea for several days.
Then came the day Kung had to undergo the third round
of chemotherapy.
“Would you like to change the regimen to FOLFOX, the
other regimen I mentioned? The side effects will likely be
reduced,” the oncologist asked Kung when he saw her dete-
riorating condition.
“Yes, doctor. I will change the regimen.”

“All right then, I will give you an intravenous vitamin and
mineral supplement (Oliclinomel N-4 550 E). It should help
boost your stamina. After that, you will receive new chemo-
therapy drugs,” the oncologist explained.
“Thank you very much, Doctor,” replied Kung in a weak
voice.
Not long after, the nurse entered the room with a large
opaque bag she had never seen before. Kung watched as the
nurse hung it on the bedside pole and then closed her eyes
in exhaustion. At this moment, Kung’s body was no different
from a skeleton covered with skin. Her arms and legs were
atrophied. Her pale skin lost even more color. How would this
latest regimen affect her?

“I know, Lord, that You are always with us,
No matter how dreadful the situation we face.
I should have hope and be confident
That You will carry me through until the end.
But now I’m so tired that I can’t handle it any longer.
Inside, my heart is so fragile and feels uncertain.
I know this challenging time will pass,

มาก กุ้งทานอาหารได้โดยไม่มีอาการปวดแสบปวดร้อนที่กระเพาะ
เหมือนครั้งก่อน อาการบวมแดงของมือและฝ่าเท้าก็เริ่มทุเลาลง แต่
ทว่า ยาสูตรใหม่ก็ใช่ว่าจะไม่ส่งผลกระทบกับเธอเสียทีเดียว ทุกครั้งที่
สระผมและเป่าผมให้แห้ง กุ้งจะต้องคอยกวาดเก็บผมที่ร่วงออกมาเต็ม
พื้นห้องน้ำ� แขนทั้งสองข้างของเธอเริ่มปรากฏรอยไหม้ตามแนวเส้น

Since the change in her chemotherapy regimen, Kung’s

stomach pain had improved significantly. Kung could now
eat without most of the issues that plagued her for weeks.
Also, the swollen redness of her hands and soles began to
subside. However, the new regimen wasn’t entirely without
drawbacks. Every time she washed and blew dry her hair, Kung
had to sweep up hair off the bathroom floor in increasingly
large volumes. In addition, the skin of both arms began to
show burning tracks along the veins from the chemo drugs
coursing through them. It had become increasingly difficult
to access her vein for each round of chemotherapy as the
veins were very fragile and thin.
One night Kung and her children were preparing for bed.
“Ouch!” cried Kung when the youngest child jumped in
and hugged her, as he did, every night before bed.
“Sorry, Mom,” said the youngest child.
“Oi…, please touch me gently. I am in so much pain,
Son,” Kung said. Each time after returning home from che-
motherapy, Kung ached throughout every area of her body.

Her body will be like cracked glass, ready to be shattered with
just the touch of a finger.
“Mom, can I still hold your fingers like this? Are you hurt?”
asked the eldest child. Since he was little, he liked to stroke
Kung’s fingers until he fell asleep; it helped him relax.
Kung sighed heavily. The new regimen acutely affected
the nerves at the tip of her fingers and toes.
“Okay, but be gentle,” replied Kung.
Upon hearing that, the youngest child had his question.
“Mom, can I sleep while hugging you like I used to?” He liked
to wrap around Kung’s neck and lay his head down on her
shoulder until he fell asleep each night.
“How about letting me hug you instead?” Then Kung
spread her arms across the two children’s chests like a bird
spreading its wings. Her teasing tone and manner made the
children laugh. As a result, the initial tension eased.
“Mom, when will Dad come here?” asked the eldest child.
“I miss Dad a lot,” said the youngest son. It had been
five months since the two children had seen their father.

“It won’t be long, about two months,” Kung replied in
a cheery tone. However, when she saw the children’s sad
faces, Kung felt sympathy for them.
“Boys, let’s pray.” Kung invited the children.
“Dear God, please heal Mom and Grandma from cancer
and don’t let them die. Please let no one else die of cancer.
May You be with Dad while he is by himself in Ukraine.” The
two children prayed like this every night.
She turned, kissed the boys softly, and held each child’s
hand beside her until the children fell asleep.

ขึ้นที่ปอด และมีรอยโรคหรือก้อน (leisons) เกิดขึ้นใหม่ที่ตับ ซึ่ง
ก่อนหน้าที่คุณจะรับเคมีบำ�บัดนั้น ยังไม่มีก้อนเล็กๆ เหล่านี้” หมอ
ด้านมะเร็งอ่านผลที่อยู่ตรงหน้าโดยไม่สบตากุ้ง แล้วเริ่มอธิบายต่อ
ถึงขนาดและตำ�แหน่งของก้อนเล็กๆ เหล่านั้นที่พบ
“ก้อนเล็กๆ ที่ว่านี่ มันเกิดจากอะไรคะหมอ” กุ้งถามด้วยน้ำ�

“ก็มีได้หลายกรณี อาจเป็นก้อนเล็กๆ ที่เกิดจากการกระจาย

“แล้วคีโมที่ได้รับมาตลอดหลายครั้ง ไม่ได้ช่วยหยุดการกระ
จายของมะเร็งหรอกหรือคะ” กุ้งเริ่มรู้สึกเสียใจ
“มันก็แล้วแต่กรณี ตามสถิติแล้วคนไข้ส่วนใหญ่จะมีการตอบ
สนองที่ดีกับยาคีโมสูตรนี้ แต่บางคนก็อาจจะไม่”
“แล้วเราจะรู้ได้อย่างไรคะว่ามันเป็นมะเร็งที่แพร่กระจายมา
หรือเปล่า” กุ้งถามต่อ ขณะเดียวกันก็พยายามควบคุมสติให้มาก
ที่สุด
“มะเร็งลำ�ไส้ใหญ่ เวลาที่มีการแพร่กระจาย มันจะเริ่มไปที่
ตับก่อน ฉะนั้นหมอจะให้คุณทำ�เอ็มอาร์ไอที่ตับ (MRI : Magnetic
Resonance Imaging)13 จะได้รู้ชัดขึ้น ถ้าหากว่าผลออกมาไม่ดี
หมอแนะนำ�ว่า คุณควรจะผ่าตัดเอารอยโรคนั้นๆ ออก และเลื่อน
การเดินทางออกไปนะครับ”

Five months after Kung received chemotherapy treat-

ments, the oncologist asked her to do another CT scan to
compare with the previous results before Kung received
chemotherapy treatment. So today, she came to see the
doctor for the results.
“The radiologist found new nodules in the lung and lesions
in the liver which were not there before your chemotherapy
treatment.” The oncologist read the results in front of Kung
without making eye contact. Then he began to describe the
size and location of those nodules.
“What causes them to show up, Doctor?” Kung asked in
a trembling voice.
“There are many reasons. It could be the proliferation
of the cancer, or it could be something else,” the doctor
replied.
“Wasn’t the chemo I had received multiple times able
to stop the spread of cancer?” Kung began to sadden.

“It depends on the situation. Statistically, most patients
will respond well to this chemotherapy regimen, but some
people might not,” the doctor said.
“So, how do we know whether the cancer has spread or
not?” Kung continued the question while trying to keep as
much of her sanity as possible.
“Generally, colorectal cancer will first spread to the liver.
Therefore, I will write an order for you to have an MRI13 on
your liver to see it more clearly. If the result is not good, I
recommend you undergo surgery to remove those nodules
and postpone your overseas trip,” the doctor explained.

บนหน้าจอ
“มันใช่มะเร็งหรือเปล่าคะคุณหมอ” กุ้งถามด้วยความอยากรู้
ตาทั้งสองจ้องเขม็งที่จอคอมพิวเตอร์ซึ่งมีภาพเอ็มอาร์ไอที่ตับของกุ้ง
ปรากฏอยู่
“จากผลรายงานของแพทย์รังสี และภาพที่เห็นตอนนี้ มันก็มีแนว

Kung and her husband sat waiting in the examination

room of a surgeon specializing in the liver.
“Hello, Doctor. I was referred by my oncologist to discuss
a liver resection (Hepatectomy)14.” Kung introduced herself
and Rob, who had just flown in from Ukraine.
The surgeon sat and read the report’s results, then began
to look at the images on the screen.
“Is it cancer, Doctor?” Kung asked curiously. Her eyes
stared at a computer monitor on which the MRI image was
displayed.
“Based on the radiologist’s report and the images, it is
very likely so. If you feel ready and want to move on with the
surgery, we could do so,” said the doctor. He then began to
explain the principle of liver resection to remove lesions.
“To do this properly, we need to cut a reasonable distance
away from the surface of the lesions. At the moment, there
are three visible lesions. The most difficult bit is the lesion
near the vein. To avoid the vein, we may increase the risk of
touching the lesion’s surface, which will render the resection

ineffective. So, another option is to remove the small lobe of
the liver where the lesions are located,” the doctor explained,
showing concern.
“And if the small lobe of the liver is removed, how will it
affect my body, Doctor?” Kung asked.
“In general, your liver can regenerate itself. If your
remaining liver lobe is healthy, it’ll grow to its former size.
Long-term, however, patients may have a shortened life ex-
pectancy.”
“If I need to have such a major surgery, I want to be
100% sure that it is cancerous.”
“The only way to know for sure is to do a biopsy, but
because the size of the lesions found is tiny, it is not appro-
priate to do that yet.”
“What if the lesions found are cancerous and no surgery
is done? How much time do I have left?” Kung asked with a
heavy heart.
“If left untreated, most patients would have about
twelve to eighteen months to live.”

“Kung, why don’t you seek a second opinion from another

doctor? I have contact with a top-level liver surgeon from
Siriraj Hospital. You can try to make an appointment with
him,” the voice of Kung’s cousin-in-law came along the line.
“Thank you very much. I will go to consult the surgeon
you recommended,” Kung replied with gratitude. Since Kung’s
mother was sick, her cousin had been giving her a lot of in-
formation, including when Kung herself got ill.
Kung met a second liver surgeon with her husband a few
days later.
“We could do surgery for you. First, however, I would
like you to consult with your oncologist again to see if other
treatment methods could be effective, including simply con-
tinuing with chemotherapy. There are cases of patients who
received chemo and had their liver lesions disappear from
the chemo alone. So there’s a chance that you won’t even
need to have surgery,” said the surgeon after he asked for
some comprehensive information and examined the MRI.

“Yes, thank you, Doctor, for recommending it. From the
MRI image, would you be able to tell if the lesions are likely
to be dangerous?” Kung asked directly.
The surgeon returned to the screen and enlarged the
picture. This time, he seemed to consider it longer. He then
turned towards Kung and Rob. “Yes, they look pretty serious.”
That afternoon, Kung came home with a heavy heart. Her
brain alternately reconsidered the words of the two surgeons.
“The MRI results arrived, and there is a tendency for the
lesions to metastasize to the liver.” Kung sent a message to
a Brother in Christ who had always encouraged her.
“God can definitely heal you. Sister, a doctor informs you
of the result, but God can heal you. Keep fighting. The good
news is that God will be with us. Be strong as we depend on
God. God will be faithful to you for sure. Let the encourage-
ment come from God.”
“Thank you,” Kung said, feeling invigorated.
“May God grant you healing and miracles.”

“กุ้งขอร้องนะแม่ ให้กุ้งได้กลับไปทำ�หน้าที่ของแม่... เป็นครั้ง
สุดท้าย..นะแม่นะ” กุ้งพูดอ้อนวอนแม่ของเธอ เวลานี้ กุ้งไม่อาจกลั้น

Six months had passed since the day Kung’s mother

became ill and was treated with targeted therapy drugs for
stage IV lung cancer. Now, Kung’s mother was much more
potent. She no longer needed an oxygen machine and could
help herself like a healthy person.
“Kung, how was your visit with the surgeon yesterday?
What did the doctor say?” Kung’s mother asked with concern
and curiosity.
“The doctor suggested that I should move on with liver
resection if I am ready. However, if I have surgery, I will
need some time to recover, so I won’t be able to travel as
scheduled next month.”
“Well, I think you should first stay in Thailand for this
treatment. Then, you can fly after your sons and husband
when you recover.”
“No, Mom. The three of them needed me at this time.
Our family is in a transition in life. Having to start living in a
new country with a new home, with new people and languages,
and with a new environment is not easy, especially for my
husband, who will be very busy because it is his first year at
this new school. Of course, he would be able to adjust quickly,

but if he has to care for two children simultaneously, I am
afraid it will be a significant burden on him.”
“Most importantly, without their mom, the children will
lack emotional stability. Moving to Montenegro, the two chil-
dren will have to make big adjustments. I am worried about
their mental state,” Kung explained. She wanted to help her
mom understand her decision.
“I will not have surgery yet. When everything over there
settles down into place, and the children can adjust well, I
will fly back for liver resection and stay with you,” said Kung
to ease her mom’s worries.
Half a year ago, the two boys had to face the changing
circumstances of life many times. They’d first flown out of
Ukraine suddenly and were quarantined in a Thai government
hotel for fourteen nights to visit their sick grandmother. Then,
they did not have the opportunity to fly back to see their
father or play with their close friends at school, all because
their mother had also fallen ill.
“Please, Mom. Let me go with them so I can at least
complete a mother’s duty for one last time,” Kung pleaded
with her mother. At this moment, Kung could no longer with-
hold her tears.

“I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to have surgery or

chemotherapy anymore. I’m tired of it,” Kung told her long-
time friend. She wanted to let it all go.
“Either way, you need to be treated. You have a lot of
burdens and responsibilities. Who will care for your mom,
your mother’s business, and your children?” This close friend
admonished Kung not to give up easily.
“Well, you’re right,” replied Kung, as she thought it
through. She was her mother’s only daughter by blood;
if anything happened to her, who would take care of her
mother? Moreover, her boys were young, and her husband
was a foreigner.
Since Kung’s friend in America learned about her cancer,
she has been checking on her and giving advice. This time,
she also helped Kung find a second opinion from a doctor.
“A friend of mine who is an oncologist at America’s top
cancer hospital had a look at your case. She suggested that
you consult your oncologist in Thailand about a PET scan
(Positron Emission Tomography)15 to get an overview of the

cancer throughout your body. It will also help to establish a
base for future follow-ups,” said Kung’s friend in a serious
tone.
“What about the liver surgeon’s recommendation for
me to do an MRI with a special contrast agent (Primovist)16,
which will help to see the lesions clearly if it is cancer or not?
What was your friend’s opinion?”
“My friend said, for now, it wouldn’t help much because
it will only help to see just a little clearer. It would be better
to wait and do the MRI in the next three months as it will
give a clearer result. Next time I see her, I will video call you
so you can talk to her directly if you have other questions.”
“Thank you very much. I will consult my oncologist in
Thailand as she suggested. I have another appointment with
him in a few days,” Kung replied.
That night, Kung studied PET scan for cancer from many
websites until late.
