Asia Pacific’s Premier
Maritime Defence Show

The International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference
(IMDEX Asia) is the Asia Pacific’s premier international
maritime defence show. Now in its tenth edition, IMDEX
Asia, organised by Experia Events with the support of the Republic
of Singapore Navy and the Defence Science and Technology Agency
(DSTA), is a must-attend event in the international naval and maritime
security calendar.

Catering to Asia’s Growing Naval Market

IMDEX Asia 2015 has received a strong vote of confidence through
early sign-ups with more than 80 per cent of the exhibition space
already booked six months ahead of the show. This reflects the growing
naval market in the Asia Pacific region, which has surpassed Europe
as the world’s second largest naval market, after the United States of
America. According to market analyst firm, AMI International, the
Asia Pacific region is expected to spend around US$200 billion on
new ships and submarines by 2032, making up roughly 25 percent of
the global projected new ship market.

High-Level Conferences

In addition to the exhibition, warships and static display components,
IMDEX Asia 2015 will once again feature a holistic programme of
strategic and technical conferences that will enable participants to
keep abreast of the latest developments in the naval and maritime
security industry and address challenges facing its future. Notably,
the 15th Asia Pacific Submarine Conference (APSC) will be held
in conjunction with IMDEX Asia 2015. The APSC fosters mutual
understanding and cooperation between regional submarine operating
navies, and other navies and organisations with an interest in
submarine safety. Aside from APSC, IMDEX Asia 2015 will also see
the return of two strategic conferences – the International Maritime
Security Conference (IMSC) and the Asian edition of the prestigious
International Naval Engineering Conference (INEC@IMDEX Asia).
These conferences will see the gathering of leading players from
navies, commercial and military ship operators, designers, shipbuilders,
manufacturers, defence-related organisations and academia to discuss
new developments and challenges faced by the naval and maritime
security industry.
What this means for IMDEX Asia is another very exciting show
ahead. IMDEX Asia is well-placed to take advantage of Singapore’s
strategic location at the heart of this flourishing region, providing
a springboard for exhibitors and trade visitors to tap into the vast
opportunities available here. ■

Unlock Singapore

The ‘Unlock Singapore’ programme was crafted piece by piece to offer delegates a chance to experience the different sides of Singapore
that many business travellers rarely get to see. By integrating business tasks, cultural tasks and a unity task, groups were able to learn,
experience and come together in a fun and interesting way. Bringing together 320 participants from over 25 countries to engage with
one another is no easy feat. The ‘Unlock Singapore’ programme required weeks and months of trial and error, research and precise crafting.
With only a few hours on one afternoon, the programme had to run like clockwork to ensure that all groups had the opportunity to experience
Singapore’s different facets.

Challenges

• Time constraints as the group only had three hrs to conduct the activity.

• Sourcing of 30 camcorders for rental.

• Location selection – as the activity constitutes business, cultural aspects and a moment of
unity, the selection of 10 different districts where these three components will fit in was a
challenge as our locations are either very cultural or very business centric.

• Manpower to run logistics as there will be 30 groups.

• Selecting an activity that will showcase a moment of unity amongst the group with an Asian
touch to be done on different districts.

Solution

A creative team from East West Planners was formed to come up with cultural activities that can
be brought into a very business-centric area as well as a business task to be done at cultural
enclaves such as Arab Street, Little India and Chinatown.

Due to a wide network of suppliers, East West managed to outsource 30 camcorders of different
models. With the help of a freelance video artist, we conducted a camera familiarisation session
for all the coordinators for them to get familiarised with the different sets of cameras.

East West engaged university students taking up Events Management to assist in the logistics.
East West conducted site inspections, training and briefing for these students to get them to
understand the flow of the programme and individual tasks.

As a highlight activity, a taichi performance was proposed to the client and East West managed to
get 10 taichi instructors to be assigned on each district.
Result

As the activity was captured on camcorders per group, the guests all got together for an evening
programme wherein one of the highlights of the evening was viewing the day’s activities, especially the video on the taichi. This “act” alone
brought these senior executives a recall of the fun, camaraderie, laughter and all could see and view the different and interesting experiences
in Singapore that they and their colleagues enjoy. The room was charged with a bonding of all in one spirit and to this the key objective of

From Flop To Fabulous: Essential Tips
For Hiring Speakers For Your Next Event

We asked three of the Certified Speaking Professionals (Global) based in Singapore
about their thoughts regarding how an event planner can add impact and value to a
conference. Sharing their views from decades of speaking experience, these three experts
