USEFUL INFORMATION

USEFUL INFORMATION

A Brief History of the Maldives

The Maldives is an archipelago of over 1190 islands forming 26 coral atolls spread over the equator
off the south-west tip of India. With a population of over 300,000 people living on 202 islands, the
Maldives is a melting–pot of many cultures. The earliest inhabitants came from south India and Sri
Lanka, followed in the 12th century by sailors from Arabian countries and East Africa, who deeply
influenced and had a profound effect on the culture that is very much evident today. The Portuguese
once ruled the Maldives, but the country was liberated in 1573 by Muhammad Thakurfar Al-Aaam,
who was offered the throne and ruled the country, later becoming the country’s national hero. A
British Protectorate was established in 1887 and lasted until July 26th 1965, when the Maldives
celebrated its independence.

Today, the Maldives is a republic, butithas not always been as such. According to Maldivian legend,
the Sultanate began with the arrival of Sinhalese prince who was stranded in a lagoon with his bride,
the daughter of a Sri Lankan king. The Sinhalese prince then decided to settle in the Maldives and
proclaimed himself Sultan. It was only as recently as 1968 that the Sultanate was finally abolished,
and the fledgling Republic was given official status.

History of Giraavrau Island

According to tradition and the
claims of the Giraavaru
people, they were the ancient
owners and rulers of the
Maldives. Then a visiting
foreign prince (Koimala Kalo)
and his entourage asked for
and were given their
permission to settle on the
neighboring island of Male''.

Giraavaru island was much
bigger, housing magnificent
buildings and temples in
those days, as the
surrounding lagoon still
testifies. Changing weather
patterns gradually eroded the bulk of the island, which was once the capital of a proud and
civilized people.

Giraavaru island is on the western side of the lagoon of North Male'
Atoll. It is not clear whether or not Giraavaru was its original name.
Giraa means 'eroding' in the Maldivian language. It was thought that
the island was called Giraavaru because it was gradually being eroded
away into the sea. It is quite possible that the name proceeded the
word. Indeed the word 'giraa' may have been coined as a result of the
natural calamity that was claiming an important island.

Overtaken by Immigrants Giraavaru woman
The descendants of the foreign settlers soon took advantage of the
environmental plight of the Giraavaru people and subjected them to
their rule. Until the twentieth century, the Giraavaru people displayed
recognizable physical, linguistic and cultural differences to the rest of
the Maldives islanders.

Social Differences
The most celebrated difference was that while the rest of the Maldives islanders were polygamous
according to Islamic custom, and boasted the highest divorce rate in the world, the Giraavaru
people were strictly monogamous and did not permit divorce.

The Giraavaru dialect was very unusual for a community that lived only a few kilometers from
Male'. They had a slightly different vocabulary and some consonants were different from the
standard Maldives language. For instance, they used the sound r instead of the sound lh.

They put the accent on different syllables and because of this, the other Maldivians thought they
had shrill voices. Their folklore was preserved in song and dance. Their music was audibly different
from that of the other islanders.

Giraavaru Attire
The attire of the women was similar to the rest of the Maldives islanders, particularly that of the
Male' middle classes. However there were visible differences. They tied their hair in a bun on the

left hand side, while most of the other Maldives islanders tied theirs on the right hand side or the
back. They wore unusual jeweler.

The most distinct items were necklaces of tiny blue beads which no other Maldives islanders wore.
They also wore a number of silver bangles on both wrists. These were made of strips of metal
about 8 millimeters in width bent into circular bangles with the ends left without being soldered
together. They wore four to five per wrist.

Political System A feMale'-dominated monogamous culture in a
The Giraavaru people were a community world of Male'-dominated polygamy
headed always by a woman. It was the only
island in the Maldives where the sultan's civil
authority was deputized always to a woman.

The sultans of the Maldives seemed to recognize the autonomy of the Giraavaru people and did
not apply quite the same laws on them as they did on the rest of their realm. The Giraavaru people
never seemed to fully recognize the sovereignty of the sultans.

In the presence of the Male' nobility, the Giraavaru people were self-assured and never showed
any signs of intimidation as did the lower classes of Male' and the other Maldives islanders. The
Giraavaru people had ready access to those who were in power and thought of themselves as
equals with the ruling elite.

Language Status
Ordinary Maldivians were required to address the Male' nobility in a different level of speech. The
Giraavaru people did not observe this custom and addressed the Male' nobility as they would
address themselves. The nobility did not challenge this attitude and always chose to ignore it. Any
other lesser Maldivian who displayed this type of self-assured confidence would have found him or
herself in deep trouble.

Common citizens of Male', who regarded the Giraavaru people as an inferior race, seemed to
resent the apparent privileges enjoyed by them under the sultans, and mocked them mercilessly. It
was believed that the Giraavaru people were mortally scared of frogs. In order to tease and
victimize them, Male' folk would throw frogs at them.

Final Change Dr Abdullah Waheed MD offered the following

prayers. The Giraavaru people were ferried across the lagoon to Hulhule' island. When the airport

there was extended they were shifted across to Male' and housed in a few blocks in newly

reclaimed areas in the Maafanu district.

Irreversible Extinction
The proud Giraavaru elders tried very hard to preserve their culture, but their youth very quickly
lost their sense of identity and were soon assimilated into the Male' culture. The former
headwoman (Fooruma-dhaita) of Giraavaru lamented to me when I was visiting Male' in 1977, that
the first ever Giraavaru divorce was registered recently. She was appalled. An ancient and proud
culture was thus wiped from the face of the earth in the latter years of the twentieth century.

The island of Giraavaru is now a tourist resort managed by Centara Hotels & Resorts

JETLAG RECOVERY

Jetlag is actually caused by disruption of our “Body Clock”, a small cluster of brain cells that controls
the timing of biological functions (circadian rhythms), including when you eat and sleep. The body
clock is designed for a regular rhythm of daylight and darkness. When we experience “wrong”
daylight and darkness times in a new zone we get the jetlag effects.

The symptoms of jetlag often persist for days while the internal body clock slowly adjusts to the new
time zone. By following a timed programme of light and dark around the time, our body clock is
more responsive to these signals, and we can quickly reset it, instead of taking a week or more to
adjust to the new time zone.

Light up your Jetlag Jetlag Eliminator Guide

The best thing you can do to adjust to a new time zone is to expose yourself to natural light as soon
as possible. Natural light acts as a powerful cue, telling your body clock where you are and what
schedule to keep.

Watering your Jetlag

Flying is extremely dehydrating, which means the eight glasses of water a day rule will not help you,
for this reason you must add a glass of water for every hour travelled. Limit the consumption of
alcohol and coffee and replace with herbal teas (peppermint) or seltzers.

Feeding Your Jetlag

Moderate your intake of carbohydrates (breads, pastas, fruits and veggies): as they induce sleep
and eat high-protein, low-fat products (poached eggs, low-fat dairy products, and grilled fish) to
boost alertness. Reverse these strategies if you are arriving at night to the Resort.

Power Nap

In case you need to catch some sleep, take a nap but limit it to maximum 30 minutes. Research has
shown that this amount of time will improve alertness. Longer naps will leave you groggy when you
wake up.

Treating your Jetlag at SPA Cenvaree

Aromatherapy massage for JETLAG 60 mins
Ease the symptoms of Jet Lag with our Aromatherapy for JETLAG Massage using specially chosen
blend of rosemary oil, lemon and ylang-ylang oil to soothe your body & mind.

DIVE SITES & MARINE LIFE

There is an amazing diversity of marine life in the Maldives, with corals and over 2,000 species of
fish, ranging from colorful reef fish to reef sharks, moray eels, and a wide variety of rays: Manta ray,
Stingray, and Eagle ray. The waters around the Maldives are abundant in rare species of biological
and commercial value, with Tuna fisheries being traditionally one of the main commercial resources
of the country, with shells.

Our spectacular house reef is located right next to our Deluxe Water Villas. Here, the rare, strange
and oddly wonderful take up residence on the atoll's southwest corner. Psychedelic flatworms,
batfish, stealthy leaf scorpion fish all chill out in slow motion under clouds tiny reef fish.

Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa Maldives is perfectly located to enjoy some of the Maldives’ most
sought-after diving spots with Giraavaru Cave and Kuda Haa 10 minutes away from the resort, and
Lion’s Head, Kiki Reef (Hans Haas Place) and Shark Point approximately 20 minutes away from the
resort; complemented by a PADI Dive Centre and a myriad of water sports on offer.

Dive Sites around Centara Ras Fushi

Kuda Haa

Because of its biodiversity, KudaHaa has been announced as one of the marine protected areas by
the government of Maldives. KudaHaa appears like a back of two-humped camel. One peak is at 8
meters deep down, and the other is at 14meters. On the reef top, there is a diversity of species of
damselfish and parrotfish. You can also see bass, blue stripped snapper, and scorpion fish. In the
shallow reef, you may find plenty of fishes patrolling the area. At the end of the north side, there is
a cave at 25 meters to 30meters deep. This cave is full of black coral trees covered by oyster shells.
Overall, Kuda Haa offers gratifying diving experiences to intermediate and advanced divers.

Giraavaru Coves

This is situated on the North West edge of our small atoll. At very shallow depths we have swam
through caves spotting Napoleon Wrasse and Turtles.

House Reef

We have 2 shallow wrecks both on a clear day has plenty of Black, White Tip Reef Sharks, Napoleon
Wrasse, Eagle Rays and even some Devil Ray if you lucky.

Night Dives on the house reef can be arranged with the team which is splendid to hunt for fish life."

Fish

Anemonefish

The black finned anemonefish, also known as Maldives anemonefish,
is a kind of clownfish found among the coral reefs of the Maldives
and Sri Lanka. It is often associated with the magnificent sea anemone
and typically lives in small groups. This clownfish is characterized by
its rusty and orange color with a single white stripe running vertically
just behind the eye. It can attain a maximum length of 11 centimeters.

Angelfish

14 species of angelfish can be found around the Maldives. They
are small diurnal reef fish that you can often see during your
Snorkeling trips. Most of them feed on a diet consisting of algae
and small invertebrates. The easiest way to differentiate a
n angelfish from a butterfly fish is by the presence of a cheek
spine: angelfish have them, and butterfly fish do not.

Parrotfish

There are 23 species of parrotfish around the Maldives. They are easy
to be recognized due to their large size and bright colors. They play
an important role in reef building because they feed on algae,
hard coral, seagrasses, and invertebrates. The adults can be s
een schooling together either on the shallow reef flat or on the reef edge.

Surgeonfish

Around 30 species of surgeonfish are commonly seen around
the Maldives. Although they come in many different color variations,
they all share the same basic structure. The name “surgeonfish”
comes from their hard spines at the base of their tail. They
graze the algae from the sea bottom and swim in small schools.

Honeycomb Moray Eel

The Honeycomb Moray Eel has a light-colored body and distinctive
honeycomb markings. They can grow up to 300 cm in length, and
as such are one of the larger species of moray eel. They feed mainly
on small fish and cephalopods and are prone to be aggressive in the wild.
You can usually find them in dark holes, deep coral caves and rocky reefs.

Saddled Puffer Fish

The Saddled puffer fish is easy to be identified. It has the ability to
inflate its body to almost twice its normal size then threatened.
Its unique color and pattern give ample warning to predators.
The adult Saddled puffer fish usually swim in pairs, while the juveniles
swim alone and stay in the shelter of the reefs. This species can
grow up to a length of 10cm.

White Lined Lionfish

White lined lionfish prefers a habitat without corals. You can usually
encounter white lined lionfish in the surge zone and along
rock walls. Armed with poisonous barbs/quills, it is well-equipped
to protect itself from predators. Lionfish is not considered safe to
the reefs since it is fond of eating shrimps and crabs.
When you dive, you can see them along the 25 meters line.

Clown Trigger Fish

The is a vividly colored fish whose upper body is dark with small
yellow spots bedecking it. Large and white spots cover the lower
part of the body. You can easily recognize them owing to its yellow
lips and a yellow band under its eyes. Its body is oval and looks
compressed. It swims along steep slopes and walls. When feeling
threatened, it usually retreats into caves.

Titan Trigger Fish

With a length of up to 75 cm (30 in), this is the largest species of
triggerfish found in our lagoon and reefs. It feeds on sea urchins,
molluscs, crustaceans, tube worms and coral by turning over rocks,
stirring up sand and biting off pieces of branching coral.
Titan triggerfish have been observed being aggressive to other fish
and humans who enter their territory, especially during the
reproduction season. They will guard their nest and attack anything
or anyone coming to close. Although bites are not venomous, the
strong teeth can inflict serious injury that may require medical
attention.

Sharks, Rays and Turtles

Sharks have earned a bad reputation as fierce killers of the sea over the years due to the movie.
Nevertheless, these thoughts are misconceptions. Sharks are just another type of fish.

Sharks and rays have a body made entirely of cartilage, which is the same material between the
bones in your knee joints. A shark’s primary sense is its smell, so it is able to detect blood from a
wounded fish over 0.4km away. On top of that, a shark has good color vision as well. Jelly filled
canals on its head allow it to sense the small amount of electricity emitted by other animals. Thus,
it can sense the vibrations from a fish as it moves through the water.

We respect that the sea is the home of the marine life, and we shall do our best to protect sea
creatures.

Whitetip Reef, Grey Reef and Silvertip Sharks

These sharks are the most commonly seen sharks in Maldives. They can reach
lengths of up to 180cm. They usually rest on the sandy bottom during the day and
prepare for the nightly hunting along the reef. Baby Blacktip reef sharks can be seen
in our lagoon.

Hammerhead Sharks

Hammerhead sharks are rare in the Maldives. If you are lucky enough to see one,
you will be astonished by their breath-taking beauty. Up to 4meters in length, they
feed on herring, mackerel, sardines, and sometimes other sharks. Keeping a safe
distance is the best way to appreciate these awesome creatures.

Turtles

Loggerhead, Green and Hawksbill turtles are the common species you can find in
the Maldives. The loggerhead sea turtle has a low reproductive rate. It is

considered an endangered species and is protected by the International Union for
the Conservation of Nature. Green turtle commonly inhabits shallow lagoons, and

feeds mostly on various species of seagrasses. Hawksbill turtles’ shells slightly

change colors, depending on water temperature. While this turtle lives part of its life
in the open ocean, it spends more time in shallow lagoons and coral reefs.

CENTARA'S GREEN PROGRAM

The Coral Project

Best Dives Maldives together with Centara Ras Fushi have created a coral garden wherein all replanted
coral fragments are steadily growing. Best Dives team have been monitoring the coral garden and
together with Centara Ras Fushi team regularly conducts replanting event with the guests. The coral
garden is easily accessible by snorkeling from the shore.

Coral may break due to many different threats as: large storms and waves or irresponsible divers and
snorkelers. Corals are organisms that reproduce primarily asexually to grow larger or repair damaged
areas. Thanks to this feature, it’s possible to grow new coral colonies from fragments (smaller or
broken pieces of coral).

These broken corals, when rolling around the sand, have almost no chance of survival, and usually
die. But, by securing these fragments in good growing conditions they can be rehabilitated and become
a mature colony. The coral fragments will be attached on the structures by using cable-tie or
underwater glue.

Active restoration is not a MAGIC BULLET: we have to consider restoration as an ongoing process over
a timescale of 10 – 30 years or even more. Each restoration site and project have its own unique set
of circumstances to consider. All risks can never be fully avoided or mitigated. Studies show that the
ability to recover for a reef already under stress, undoubtedly, takes a long time. Our long-term goal

is to provide a sustainable regrowth project that can be monitored and maintained for years to come.

Why is littering bad for the environment?

Trash that ends up in the sea is often eaten by animals that live there, which can harm or even kill
them. It is also a problem for us humans. We are at the top of the food chain, which means we end
up eating OUR trash! It also ruins the beauty of the sea, stops tourists from coming back, damages
boats, and carries diseases.

GREEN FINS
Guidelines for Environmentally Friendly
Diving and Snorkeling

“As divers and snorkelers, you are the ocean’s partners in conservaƟon.”

Do not step on the coral
Watch your feet and fins at all times. Corals are very fragile and
take a long time to grow. Stepping on the corals can break it,
damage its surface, or cut your feet.

Do not stir the sediment
If you are not careful, the flipping of your fins can stir the sediment
and debris to upset small habitats and cover corals. This reduces
the ability of the coral to photosynthesize and could cause it to
die. This can also lead to small animals being washed away or
increase their chance of predation.

Do not chase or touch marine life
This can cause great stress to any animal. This can also transmit
diseases or remove protective coatings of fish, mammals,
invertebrates, and other species. Look, but never touch or try to
get too close.

Do not feed the fish
Feeding fish or any other species can cause them to rely on that
food source. This also makes fish more aggressive towards divers
because they expect to be fed. It can even lead to corals getting
smothered in algae, as the fish no longer eat the algae.

Do not throw trash into the sea
There are many problems with marine pollution, ranging from
animals eating plastic bags and cigarette butts, to chemicals in
the waste contaminating the water and entering the food chain.
Marine pollution can be dangerous for humans too; after all,
whatever we put in the ocean goes back to us.
we put in the ocean goes back to us.

www.greenfins.net

GREEN FINS
Guidelines for Environmentally Friendly
Diving and Snorkeling

“As divers and snorkelers, you are the ocean’s partners in conservaƟon.”

Do not buy corals or marine life as souvenirs
This encourages people to remove tons of marine life, dead or
P alive, from marine ecosystems to sell as souvenirs. If the buying
stops, the killing and collecting can too.

Do not support shark finning

Green Fins is against the shark fin trade that causes 70-100 millions
sharks to be killed each year. Sharks are primarily killed for their fins,
which are used for soup. In the Philippines, shark liver oil is believed to
be a skin-whitening product and a cure for certain illnesses.
Removing these top predators can mean the imbalance of our seas.
Don’t eat in restaurants that sell shark products.

Do not spearfish
This method of fishing removes the largest and slowest
reproducing species, which can change the balance of the
ecosystem and upset the food chain dramatically. It is also likely to
injure a species if it is not speared correctly, leading to a slow
death. Spearfishing can also be dangerous to divers, snorkelers,
and swimmers.

Do not anchor on coral reefs
Anchors are heavy and often have a long chain attached. When
dropped onto a fragile coral reef, anchors cause great destruction. If
the boat changes direction with wind or currents, the anchor will
drag and cause more damage. Coral takes hundreds of years to
grow and are very important for our seas.

Do not get marine life – dead or alive
Removing species that would normally break down and be
recycled into the sea leaves other animals without nutrients and
elements that they need for growth. Even empty shells on the
beach play an important role. Take nothing but pictures, leave
nothing but bubbles.
