MENU BAR: it is normally below the tittle bar.
It consists of a list of items such as file, edit, view, format tools each option
has drop down list that the user can make selection to execute command on the
spreadsheet. The 2003 excel menu bar has 9 options.

FORMATTING TOOL BAR; it is a tool bar that contains items such as Bold (B),
Underline (U) and Alignment which helps to change the appearance of a text.

Standard toolbar is a toolbar that contains items such as Cut, Undo, Redo, Save and
paste which helps the user to execute command by single click

Name box; it is the rectangular area above the top-left corner of a worksheet in which
excel displays the cell reference of the active cell. E.g. A1, D8, G4 etc.
Active cell; is a selected cell in which new entries appears in. OR active cell it is a cell
where data is entered and it is noted with a thick border.
CELL; it is the intersection of rows and columns.
Cell selector; is the heavy border that around a cell. It also helps to see the active cell.
Cell referencing; is made up of the column letter and the row number. Example A2, B3
etc.
ROW; it is the horizontal line of cells and a number is used to identify each row. (1-
65,536)

COLUMN; it is vertical line of cells and a letter is used to identify each column.(A-Z,
AA, and BA-BZ…. IA-IV)

Formula bar; it helps to enter formula into the active cell. It also displays all the entries
on the active cell.

Task pane; it is a window that appears automatically the right hand side on the office
window. It is used to perform tasks such as creating a new document, printing and for
searching.

Note;

- Worksheet is the single document of spreadsheet made up of little boxes
arranged in rows and columns.

- Workbook is the collection of two or more worksheets. Or workbook is a
file containing worksheets.

- A letter representing column and a number representing row and combine
to form a new cell. E.g. cell A1, B4, and H10.

- Range; is a spreadsheet formula which select a block of cells for equal
similar treatment. A range of cells can extend across a row, down a
column, or over a combination of the two, but all cells in the range must be
contiguous, sharing at least one common border.

- Graph: a graph is a visual or pictorial representation of data. It can also be
defined as a chart that represents a data.

ENTERING DATA IN A WORKSHEET

You can enter four types of data on in a worksheet cells.

1. LABELS: it is text or numbers not used in calculation.
2. VALUES: these are numbers that can be used in calculation.
3. DATES: a necessary part of most worksheets which helps to identify the time

Program was created.
4. Formula: these are commands to perform calculation numbers or formula.

WORD PROCESSING APPLICATION

At form one; we learnt the features of word processing document. At this stage we will
consider the toolbars in the word processing document and the functions of items located on
the toolbars.

TOOLBAR is row of icons that are clicked on to perform a specific task or A toolbar is row,
column, block or group of screen icons or buttons just below the menu bar that when clicked
on allows you to perform commands much more easily.

EXAMPLES OF TOOLBAR

1. Standard toolbar
2. Formatting toolbar
3. Drawing toolbar

The standard toolbar and the formatting toolbar are the ones frequently used and therefore by
default they are always displayed.

THE STANDARD TOOLBAR

The standard toolbar is the toolbar that contains shortcuts to major commands used in word
processing document. Eg: save, open, new, etc

FUNCTION OF SOME USED BUTTONS ON STANDARD TOOL BAR

COLUMNS: It changes the number of columns in document.

ZOOM: Enlarge or reduce the displayed of active document.

THE FORMATTING TOOLBAR

Is a toolbar which contains icons such as Bold, Italics and Font which helps to change
appearance of the text in a document.

Font colour Used to specify the font colour.

SCROLLBAR: Is an object that is used to navigate from one end of window content to
another.
TYPES OF SCROLLBAR

1. Horizontal scrollbar: It is used to scroll to the left or right of a document.
2. The vertical scrollbar: It is used to scroll up and down. The vertical scroll bar is the

most frequently used.

THE HELP FACILITY
It is used to find solutions or answers to any related topics in the word processing document

HOW TO USE THE HELP FACILITY

- Click on the Microsoft word help button on the standard toolbar to open the Word
Help wizard screen.

- Click ‘Table of content’ and go through the content to view those that meet what
you want to do.
When the help facility is opened it displays 3 TABS namely;

1. CONTENT: content have two icons, book, and question marks. Double click on the
book to see more options or double click on questions marks to read a topic.

2. INDEX: index allows you to search for information using the key words. In some
programs, index is replaced with FIND. In index, click in the white text area, and
begin typing the words you seek.

3. FIND: more options are available in HELP find feature but windows must take a few
minute to create a help data base the first time you use it.

Search engines are special site on the web that is designed to help people find
information stored on other sites. Or search engines are software programs used to
search for information on the internet.

TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES

There are many types of search engines that one can use to search for some
information on the internet Popular among them are:

 Google www.google.com
 Yahoo www.yahoo.com
 Ask Jeeves www.ask.com

Other examples of search engines are; ask.com, powerset.com, popmail.com, msn.com,

Go.com, sapo.com, hotbot.com and livessearch.com.

SKILLS IN USING SEARCH ENGINES

 Your keyboard or topic should be short and very specific. Avoid using long topics or
typing a whole sentence.

 Relevant information always appears at the top of the search result.
 Check your spelling all the time.

ACCESSING INFORMATION USING THE SEARCH ENGINE

 Go to the website of the search engine that you want to use.
 Type the keyboard or search topic in search button.
 Press the enter key or click on the search button.
 A list of links of search result containing the keyboard you entered would be

displayed.
 Click on any of the link to go it location.
 Continue till you get what you are looking for.

FINDING FILES AND FOLDERS USING THE SEARCH TOOLS

The search tool is a program in the operating system that allows you to search for missing or
misplaced files and folders.

HOW TO FIND FILES AND FOLDER USING THE SEACH TOOL

-. Click on search on the start menu displayed to open the search dialogue box.

-. Click on All Files and folders in the Task pane.

-. Type the file name in the all or part of the file name text box.

-. Select where you want the file to be searched from in the LOOK IN text box.

- click the search button to begin searching for the file and wait till search results are
displayed.
