A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

This will be our seventh magazine and I couldn’t
be more proud. Finishing each edition is truly a
labor of love for me, as well as for our designer
and our editor. Coordinating everyone’s images
and words, then sending them to our designer
on time is a feat in and of itself! Laurie King’s
hard work behind the scenes keeps us on
track and allows us to keep producing these
publications every season.

For our spring magazine, we decided to forgo a
theme. Instead, our photographers and stylists
have chosen a mixture of their favorite shoots
and personal projects that celebrate the things
they’re enthusiastic about. All of their stories
openly represent the talent of the people who
I get to share my days with. Not everyone is so
lucky to have turned a passion into employment
– I’m eternally grateful to my team for making it
possible for me to live my dream every day.

Cheers,

THE BEACH

Most days you can see San Francisco in
the distance from this beach. On this day,
though, the city and foreground scenery
were enshrouded in a light-filled fog. There
was a gentle yet biting breeze dancing on
the surface of the water. We could hear
the surf in the distance even though the
dense fog obscured it from sight. We kept
our hands warm by clutching our morning
brew. We were eager to visually explore
the multiple dimensions of a surf culture
that, for many, still evokes stereotypical
images of blonde Southern California boys
and eternal youth. We were there to let
our cameras bear witness to one surfer’s
journey through her adopted, aquatic
home in Northern California.

TRUE COLLABORATIONS

When my job introduces me to local
craftspeople and artists, I feel like my role
as a stylist is merging with my identity as
an artist.
When collaborating with creatives, I often
get to hear about new, innovative practices.
I’m frequently inspired by the imaginative
and unique methods used to make objects.
Since my role as a prop stylist is focused so
heavily on making objects look beautiful,
it’s always a pleasure to discover a different
process and to appreciate the individual
work that goes into the pieces I use in my
daily job.
Partnering with local artists to create visual
stories that illustrate their passion is the
most genuine way I can use my skills as a
stylist and art director. It was a pleasure
to collaborate with artist Tina Frey for this
particular project, as I’ve admired and used
her pieces in my own work for years. This
project was a way for me to acknowledge
and honor the importance of handmade
objects and the creative process.

WHAT LITTLE GIRLS
ARE MADE OF

It has always been amazing to watch
our daughters find so much meaning in
mundane, little trinkets. They take anything
that can serve as a container, like a purse
or a box, and fill it with as many treasures
as they can. The treasures that they
squirrel away often come from nature,
like leaves, rocks and flowers, but their
stash also includes an interesting array of
random items: hair clips, broken balloons,
ribbons, press-on nails, Shrinky Dinks, gum,
ChapStick, coins, string, candy, figurines,
missing toy parts, rings, necklaces... Every
single thing they collect is very important
to them.
What’s even more incredible to us is just
how well the girls pair their collections
together. We couldn’t help but start to
document their special stockpiles. All
images shot on our girls’ dress-up dresses.

MY QUEST FOR THE

PERFECT BOWL

When asked to participate in Poppy
Creative’s spring magazine, I wondered
what, as a soft goods stylist, I could
contribute beyond what can simply be
seen in my portfolio on our website for a
sample of my work. I hoped for something
more than a generic topic like “101 ways to
make a bed”…

During the wettest season the Bay Area
had seen in years, the rain fell for days.

As I sat in my apartment thinking about
this project, I cooked, baked bread,
made a bowl of soup, grabbed a bowl
of fruit, poured water for the dog… Bowls,
bowls, bowls.
So many of my actions required the use of
a bowl.

“BINGO the light went off” these bowls
now have yet another task.

For their obvious functionality or simply a
thing of beauty, these perfect vessels have
been used in our daily lives for thousands
of years. Indeed, one of the most useful
tools in the home.

Thanks to my evident bowl obsession,
these beauties have become some of my
most cherished possessions, with all their
daily tasks or to simply cradle a tiny pair
of boxing gloves given to me on the day
I was born.
My Tibetan bowls can even sing.

Yes, bowls, but my contribution to the
magazine is more about composition and
the ability to shoot everything in natural
light at home on an iPhone.
(Weather permitting, of course…)
