The One Big MisTake
“Time is your friend; impulse is your enemy. Take advantage of compound interest and don’t be captivated by
the siren song of the market.”
– Warren Buffett
by FREDERICK R. MACLEAN
If you had invested $10,000 in global stocks 50 years ago, how much money would you have now? Come up with an estimate, then check out the answer at the bottom of this article. Now, let that number sink in for a minute. The sheer scale of this growth in wealth over five decades is difficult to comprehend, but it is not the result of astute stock picking, successfully timing the ups and downs of the market, or some other form of

financial wizardry; it represents an annu- alized return of 11%, which is the return you would have earned if you had bought a global stock portfolio, automatically rein- vested the dividends, and never touched it for 50 years.
It is a simple mathematical fact that the power of compound interest is enormous,
and its benefits are available to anyone who would like to participate. Yet, tragically, few investors experience returns of this magni- tude over time. You can make the correct initial investments and have a high degree of confidence in the long-term reward, but making even one false step along the way can ruin the math.
The One Big MisTake
Harnessing the power of compound returns is simple in theory: Invest your money, leave it alone, and wait. Simple in theory, but not easy in practice because the road to riches is beset by the distractions of “get rich quick” investment fads and crisis-driven panics. In order for the power of compounding to work, you need to remain committed and fully invested despite the noise around you. Pulling out of the market - the one big mis- take - can significantly derail your progress.
For example, what if you remain mostly disci- plined but sometimes pull out of the market when current events are not to your liking? Missing only a few days or months will not
have a significant impact on returns, right? Actually, the results can be startling. If you were fully invested most of the time, but missed out on just the one best week of the past 25 years, your overall wealth would be reduced by 16.6%. Missing out on the best three months of that 25-year period would reduce your wealth by a sobering 29.5%.
Why are these numbers so dramatic? Because a high percentage of the market’s gains are concentrated in short bursts, which tend to occur soon after the most dramatic negative events; if you miss these bursts, the compounding opportunity is significantly diminished.

The ImporTance of avoiding
The One Big MisTake
IT’s DifferenT This TiMe
Armed with this knowledge, the correct course of action is clear: Leave your investments alone. Yet avoiding that one big mistake remains difficult because you have to deal with each market crisis as it occurs, and each crisis brings a renewed feeling that it is somehow different this time and the world is coming to an end.
Over the past 50 years, the stock market has been plagued by a wide variety of calamities, including the Arab oil embargo in the 1970s, skyrocketing inflation in the 1980s, the dot- com crash in the early 2000s, 9/11, the 2008 global financial crisis and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. But the proper response to any crisis is the same: Stay calm and, when it comes to investing, leave your money alone. Investors who made the mistake of exiting the markets in response to these events likely missed out on the dramatic unannounced rebounds that follow-
ed. In the 12 months following the end of the dot-com bust, global stocks were up by 45%. After the global financial crisis, the 12-month return was 53%, and after the pandemic, it was 55%. Missing out on any of these returns would have been an enormous mistake. Investors who endured these crises rather than reacting to them were able to capitalize on the full benefits of compound- ing over time.
Woody Allen once claimed that 80% of success is showing up. As it relates to investing, his claim is an understatement. If you merely show up – and make a commit- ment to staying in the market – the forces of capitalism and compounding can make you wealthy without requiring you to take any further action. Just be sure to avoid the one big mistake.

Endangered Species
FINLESS PORPOISES
by ROBERTA B. TURNER
Finless Porpoise
This finless porpoise is the world’s only fresh- water porpoise and it is critical to save this species from extinction.
The Yangtze River, the longest river in Asia, used to be one of the only two rivers in the world that was home to two different species of dolphin – the Yangtze finless porpoise and the Baiji dolphin. However, in 2006 the Baiji dolphin was declared functionally extinct. This was the first time in history that an entire species of dolphin had been wiped off the planet because of human activity. Its close cousin, the Yangtze finless porpoise, is known for its mischievous smile and has a level of intelligence comparable to that of a gorilla.

Endangered Species
FINLESS PORPOISES
Xiling Gorge Of The Three Gorges Of The Yangtze River In China
Finless porpoises are primarily found in shal- low, coastal waters and some rivers in the Indo- Pacific region. They prefer waters with sandy or soft bottoms and often inhabit estuaries, bays, and mangrove swamps.
The Yangtze river’s finless porpoise is one of the very few porpoises (relatives of dolphins and whales) that live in fresh water. Its small size and cute ‘smile’ make it much loved in China and beyond.
10 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025
Finless Porpoise Waving

The finless porpoises are the only porpoises to lack a true dorsal fin. Instead, there is a low ridge covered in thick skin bearing several lines of tiny tubercles. In addition, the forehead is unusually steep compared with those of other porpoises.
The finless porpoise is light blue-gray or gray-white in color and with a lifespan of around 20 years.
They have been observed to eat a variety of bottom-dwelling fish, crabs, shrimp, octopus, squid, and even cuttlefish. Their diet may vary depending on location and prey availability.
After years of rapid decline, the latest census shows that the population of the critically endangered Yangtze finless porpoise has remained almost stable in recent years – dropping very slightly to 1012 individuals from 1040 in 2012.
The porpoises are at risk from the same threats that the Baiji faced – including loss of food sources and boat collisions.
Porpoises are a good indicator of the health of their environment – if the river is over- fished or polluted, the porpoises struggle to survive.
By protecting these porpoises we’re helping preserve healthy rivers and lakes – which a lot of people heavily rely on for food, provision of clean water and as a source of livelihoods.

One Thing We Cannot
Conceive Of Living Without
by LARRY TURNER
For several months I have had a strong desire to explore why people feel so close to, and express so much love for, animals be it a rab- bit, lizard, cat, dog, or whatever else qualifies as a pet. I suspect my reason for this feeling is that our last remaining canine pet is ap- proaching 15 years of age and is beginning to show that fact in her irregular coughing, bathroom breaks, and eating habits and
preferences. Even accepting those develop- ments cannot prepare us for the inevitable day when she will breathe no more.
What drives humans to such intense feelings about animals? I read several articles about this phenomenon and have found the follow- ing to be nearly unanimous explanations for the existence of this passion in most human beings:
12 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025

• Since birth, most people crave things that are soft and fuzzy, like blankets, toy animals and real animals.
• Just the presence of animals can provide a calming influence on the young and old alike.
• Unlike other humans, animals will not reject our offers of love.
• Animals in many ways are like children in that they need us.
• Animals make us feel good and we can express ourselves openly to them without getting a negative reaction in return.
• In the end, animals, including human beings, require companionship.
For all these reasons, and many others that will come to your mind after reading this ar- ticle, we love our animals and cannot con- ceive being left in our homes without them, although that is inevitable at some time.
I can almost hear the silence! It’s deafening.
The inevitable happened on, of all days, May 11, Mother’s Day. God called Lucky Lou to be by His side and she joined Him that day. My soul feels a terrible void, but I hope to be with her one day .....if I am lucky.
Celebrate freedom.

LegisLaTive sessiOn UpDaTe
by CHIP LAMARCA
Florida State Capitol Building, Tallahassee
As of the time you are reading this, we may or may not have completed the 2025 Legislative Session and the Florida state budget. This is due to the debates back and forth between the Florida House and the Florida Senate. Our goal this year has been to lower the tax burden on Floridians, so agreement on a specific plan has caused the delay. This session was different than normal and was filled with many twists and turns. However, Team 100 was able to still accomplish meaningful work while in Tallahassee and I was proud to be able to pass multiple bills this session.
14 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025

Hillsboro Lighthouse, Pompano Beach
THELIGHTMAG.COM 15

LegisLaTive sessiOn UpDaTe
This session has brought forward several note- worthy proposals from leaders across the state. Among them are efforts to raise the homestead exemption in order to reduce the property tax burden on Floridians. There was also a proposal
to permanently lower the sales tax rate, which would also reduce the business rent tax. Both of these initiatives are strong steps toward eas- ing the financial pressures on Florida families and businesses.
I’m especially proud to have spon- sored HB-797, a bill that supports our veterans by expanding access to nurs-
ing home beds. HB-797 would allow
a 501(c)(3) nonprofit retirement com- munity - one that serves veterans,
their spouses, and surviving spouses -
to create “Veteran and Spouse Designated Nursing Home Beds” within a skilled nursing facility. The bill also permits the transfer of nursing home beds within 100 miles if there is
not a facility currently available, ensuring that our veterans receive the care they deserve. Supporting our veterans has long been a priority of mine.
16 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025

I was also proud to be a part of HB-999, a bill that allows gold and silver to be classified as le- gal tender in Florida. The bill also eliminates the sales tax on the purchase of gold and silver. This bill makes the process easier between parties to make a trans- action. I am proud to say that the Governor has already signed this bill, making gold and silver legal tender in Florida.
Two other bills that I think are
going to make our community
a better place is HB-205 and HB-593; they both have to do with dogs. HB-205, aka “Troopers Law,” does not allow you to aban- don your dog. This issue came to light when someone left Trooper tied to a fence poll when Hurricane Milton hit the west coast.
HB-593 requires a dog that is the subject of a dangerous dog investigation because it has killed a human being or left a bite mark that scores 5 or higher on the Dunbar bite scale to be immediately confiscated by an animal control authority.
I begin each session with the goal of helping to make Florida a better place for every resident. Every bill that I file and every appro- priation that I pursue is done with that mission in mind. I also want to thank all the constituents who made the trip to Tallahassee this year to share their priorities and advocate for the issues they care about. Your voices make a difference, and I truly believe the best way to influence the process is to show up and speak up.
As always, it is an honor to serve you as your State Representative.

When Your
Heat Is Cold
It’s Time
To Change
The System
by LARRY TURNER
In the past it could honestly be stated that the “culture” of a team like the Heat could lead it to championships. That statement is no longer valid, probably because kids are no longer brought up by strict parents who create nearly a military atmosphere in the home. The result was that when the kids became adults, they were responsive to that type of atmosphere, especially in the work environment. So, when a coach drilled a play or a response to an opponent’s play into the players’ heads, they reacted as instructed no matter the situation. That mindset no lon- ger exists and teams like the Heat need to
18 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025
Bam Adebayo

Devion Mitchell Tyler Herro Kel’el Ware
promote talent over culture and talent over temperament. An example of this difference was seen in a recent Heat game when a Heat player had a clear path to the basket on a fast break but instead pulled up and launched a long three, which missed. The “culture” was not strong enough in the player’s mind to dissuade him from attempting a long three-point effort instead of accepting a sure “two”.
The talent levels are higher today, as are the confidence levels. Most players are very good at their profession and want to be able to display their talents on the court. The principal difference between players today is in their ability to be recognized by their teammates as team leaders. Players are more likely to respond to one of their own who has assumed the role of leader before they will accept playing within a manfactured culture.
Today’s Heat team appears to be without an accepted leader, as a result of which players have a tendency to react on their own and not in line with a leader’s direction. There are excellent players on the roster, including Herro, Bam, Mitchell and Ware, but no “take-charge” guy who has earned the respect of the team on the court and is therefore able to provide direction in executing a game plan. To possess this talent, the team will probably have to acquire it by trade, and that will undoubtedly involve more than a few existing players.
In any event, it should be an interesting off- season watching management rebuild what had at one time promised to be a champion- ship quality group of players. Having failed to achieve that level of performance, the Heat will have to try again. The fans will be watch- ing....intently!

The Beautiful
Red Cardinal
At Easter I saw a beautiful red cardinal in our backyard. I thought it was a quick visit, but the same cardinal came by every day for over a month and stayed longer and longer. I thought that was so unusual and it was a special time looking out and find- ing him. He even came to sit on our chairs on the covered porch. After a few weeks, a second cardinal came at a similar time with a different color and I realized it was a female. We really enjoyed them for the entire time. He still visits from time to time but not as often.
I had always heard there was a special mean- ing when you see a cardinal, so I decided to research the cardinal further.
20 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025 20 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025
The northern cardinal is a mid-sized perching songbird with a crest on the top. Females are a reddish olive color and have a gray mask around the beak, while males are a vibrant red color and have a black mask on the face, as well as a larger crest. Juvenile cardinals do not have the distinctive red- orange beak seen in adult birds until they are almost fully mature.
Seeing cardinals in your yard can be a message of love, hope, and connection, especially if you’ve recently experienced a loss or are going through a challenging time. In many cultures, cardinals are believed to be spiritual messengers, and that their appearance can bring comfort and reassurance.
by ROBERTA B. TURNER

I lost an important family member over the Easter season many years ago, and this past Mother’s Day I lost my beloved yorkie Lucky Lou. So, some can say it was a coinci- dence, yet I would like to believe it was a special message from heaven.
The northern cardinal, also generally
known as the common cardinal, red cardinal, or simply cardinal, is a bird
in the genus Cardinalis. It can be found in southeastern Canada and throughout the United States. Its habitat includes wood- lands, gardens, shrublands, and wetlands. It is the state bird of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The diet of the adult cardinal consists mainly (up to 90%) of weed seeds, grains, and fruits. It is a ground feeder and finds food while hopping on the ground through
trees or shrubbery. It will also consume snails and insects, including beetles and grasshoppers, and the young are fed almost entirely on insects. Other food items include corn, oats, sunflower seeds, the blossoms and bark of elm trees, and drinks of maple sap from holes made by sapsuckers.
So, if you are lucky enough to see a cardi- nal on a special day, you may be receiving a message from above.

When Does
A Dream Become
A Prediction
Of The Future
by LARRY TURNER
Over the many years I have survived life, I have experienced hundreds of dreams, the most vivid of which seemed to be alerting me to what may exist in the future life. Yes, I believe there is a future life, and recently my dreams seem to have attempted to explain what to expect.
In a recent dream, there was a group of women dressed as we might see maids in a luxurious hotel, with colored uniforms accented by white blouses. This particular
group seemed to have one dominant female who, unexpectedly during the dream, ex- per-ienced a sudden change in the color of her uniform. After that occurred, the uni- forms of the other women also changed to match the new color.
22 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025

To someone like me searching for clues to the future life, that transitioning of a uniform color had meaning. It suggested that when one dies their “world” will change, i.e., the uniform color, but the existence of the deceased in some form will remain. So, my interpretation of the dream, is that the dominant woman in the group died but her “being” continued in some form in a future life.
In a previous dream, I was on a bus with my sister waiting for its departure back to my home. Nature called and I exited the bus to use the bathroom in the bus station. When I returned, the bus had left with my sister on board. She died by choice shortly there- after, and I believe I would have joined her had I not taken a short break from our bus. I believe that the message of my dream was not to follow her.
Maybe I am simply hoping that there will be a future life, but I think if we are alert to evidence that “appears” in our life about the future after death, we can wit- ness particles of evidence of what that future may have in store for us.
I’ll let you know if I ultimately discover that I am wrong!

Some Important
Ways To Make
The Most Of
Your Summer
by ROBERTA B. TURNER
I love summer. I am not sure why because I am not a fan of the hot weather but to me summer seems a bit more relaxed and it tends to have a slower pace than the rest of the year. It seems like the per- fect time to make changes. Summer is the right time to spend a little more time fulfilling your bucket list. How to make the most of your summer all depends on what you like and don’t like. But most of us have many things in common. Here are some of our suggestions for you to consider this summer.
24 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025

THELIGHTMAG.COM 25

Some Important Ways To Make The Most Of Your Summer
Take A Vacation
Yosemite National Park, California
Americans take the least amount of vacations of any civilized nation. We have so many excuses. I am too busy, I need to work to get ahead, I really can’t afford it right now, and I plan to go next year. Those are excuses. Vacations are important and research actually shows that people who take vacations will live twenty percent longer. Other important benefits of a vacation include increasing your energy on a daily basis and most people come up with their best ideas when they are on a break. A vacation doesn’t have to be super expensive. There are many places to see and enjoy and many travel deals worth looking into. Remember you only live once and you are not young forever.
26 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025

Plan Weekend Getaways
Try One New Thing
Do something you have always wanted to do but never found the time or courage to do. It can be a new sport, a new look, a new hobby, a new place to live or making a career change. It should be the one new thing you want to do. When contemplating what the one new thing is you will do this summer make sure it is realistic. Don’t set yourself up to fail. Some new things to consider are taking an art class, buying seasonal theatre tickets, changing your hair color, playing golf, taking two weeks in a row off from work, or spending a weekend with an old friend. Doing one new thing should be fun and adventurous.
Maybe your life is too hectic to take a traditional vacation so plan “staycations” instead. We are so fortunate to live in Florida and have so many places to visit in and around the state. You can experience a lot in just a few days. If you have never been to Africa, then plan a trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom or Busch Gardens. You will see magnificent creatures in natural settings. You can do this in one day but why not plan an overnight stay and enjoy the international culture of these exciting cities. Love the Caribbean? Grand Bahama is only 56 miles away and this island still has its local culture along with beautiful beaches and relaxing resorts. There are many places perfect for a one or two night stay.
Grow Your Own Vegetables
Summer is the perfect time for planting certain types of vegetables. You can do this in the ground or in outdoor pots. When determining what you would like to plant make sure you consult with a knowledgeable pro. Tomatoes are one of the more popular and easy to grow vegetables during the summer. There is a large variety of tomatoes; however, if you are a novice like me I would recommend you start with cherry tomatoes because they are easier to grow and take less time to ripen. Other vegetables to consider include beets, bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, squash and zucchini.

Some Important Ways To Make The Most Of Your Summer
Create An Adventure
Adventures come in all shapes and sizes. You can do something as simple as camping or maybe some- thing with a bit of a challenge like rafting down a river. Have you ever visited Peace River? It is located in Arcadia in Southwest Florida. Peace River is truly a unique experience as you weave your way through a glimpse of old Florida with the landscape covered with huge cypress trees and water oaks draped with Spanish moss. There are over 400 species of animals that include fresh and saltwater fish, birds, reptiles, whitetail deer, bald eagles and the Florida alligator. You can camp overnight in the Peace River camp-grounds, book an airboat ride to enjoy all the scenery, take a canoe or kayak down the river, hike and even go fossil hunting. This is certainly something different and so close to home. The Peace River is approximately three hours away from South Florida.

Everglades National Park, Florida
Spending Some Time With Nature
In Florida we have many beautiful parks and places to visit.
When is the last time you visited Everglades National Park?
The Everglades is a World Heritage Site and the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. The park sits on over 1.5 million acres and this international treasure is home to many endangered species including the American Crocodile and the Florida Panther. Another option is to get out of town and go to the mountains. There isn’t anything better during the summer months than a visit to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The air is so fresh and the views so breathtaking it will be a refreshing change for you to enjoy. We live in a beautiful world and within twelve hours you can experience some of the best of it.
Give Something Back
Find the right charity and volunteer. There are so many worthwhile organizations in today’s world. It is important to use your passion to benefit something important to you like animal welfare, helping the homeless, building homes for the poor, assisting with healthcare issues, local children’s clubs, and other important causes. The best part of giving something back is the fact that doing good will make you feel good. Get involved, voice your opinion, volunteer and get involved. Giving back is more than writing a check; it is about making the world a better place for everyone.

hOW The DOLphIns fareD In The nfL DrafT
by LARRY TURNER
Some analysts regarded the recent draft
as warranting a “B” grade for the Dolphins;
others thought it felt more like a “C”. What-
ever your thoughts on the matter, it is way
too early to come to a decision on how the
draft picks may or may not help the Dolphins
My personal reaction to the draft is that the 2025 team will have too many new faces, and it always takes players several games to learn the game plans and, more importantly, the moves of their teammates. It is quite un- likely that this or any other team can com- pletely rebuild in one year. And having a rookie on the OL is rarely a prescription for immediate success.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa
return to being the competitive team we are used to supporting.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa
30 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025

And then there is the continuing saga of our fragile quarterback. Ewers would not appear to be an immediate answer should the need arise, so the pressure will be on the OL to keep Tua healthy, even if it means giving up on certain plays to protect him.
We can also assess the performance of man- agement in developing the team’s plans for the draft. It was refreshing to see them go straight for the longtime weakness in the offensive line and to strengthen the defen- sive line after the departure of some reliable starters. Grant and Savaiinaea should answer those calls, and the addition of Phillips will add a needed spark to the DL. All three should be fun to watch, if healthy.
New Defensive Tackle Kenneth Grant
Now we must sit back, follow the pre-season contests and the performance of the hew play- ers, as well as the continuing contributions of existing stars like Tyreek Hill. His determination to play well will go a long way to determining the future success of this team.

2025 FORD BRONCO SPORT
The 2025 Ford Bronco Sport is loaded with open road character. It has easy-to-use controls, decent handling agility, and a cabin that is roomy for a model that is categorized as a member of the small SUV class.
It may not be able to go all the same places the bigger Bronco can, but the Bronco Sport is still the most adventurous in the compact SUV class.
The 2025 Ford Bronco Sport offers five distinct trim levels: Big Bend, Heritage, Free Wheeling, Outer Banks, and Badlands.
If you are looking for a small SUV with off-road capability, the one with the most to offer is the 2025 Ford Bronco Sport. It borrows its name – and its adventurous spirit – from the larger, mid-size Bronco, but this is more than a mere style item.
The 2025 Ford Bronco Sport offers a Terrain Management System with up to seven avail- able G.O.A.T. Modes: Goes Over Any Type of Terrain.
The Bronco Sport’s base model is powered by an 180-hp turbocharged three-cylinder engine that’s borrowed from the Ford Escape. The asphalt street resident, although smaller than its big brother Bronco, comes in other flavors with standard all-wheel drive and better clear- ances for easier trail riding. While every model
can manage a bit of off-roading, there are editions that are more capable than others thanks to the packages like the Sasquatch (more about that further down) which are avail- able on the Outer Banks and Badlands trims. While its main use is not for off-grid adventures, the Bronco Sport is an easy SUV to live with as an everyday driver.
The Bronco Sport rides on the same platform that underpins the compact Escape crossover, and every model has an all-wheel drive. A 250- hp turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder is also available. Both pair powerplants with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but the more powerful engine brings steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and upgraded cooling components. The top-tier Badlands trim packs an assortment

of exclusive equipment, including a twin-clutch rear-drive unit with a differential lock (also available on the Outer Banks Sasquatch). The Badlands and Sasquatch-equipped models also have all-terrain tires mounted on 17-inch wheels, a 1.0-inch suspension lift for added ground clearance, and stouter dampers. Its knobby tires make the highway ride a bit louder than the standard models, but it’s otherwise just as nimble as other Bronco Sports. The 2.0-liter engine makes the Badlands quick, while the base 1.5-liter engine in the lower trims is a bit air hungry at higher speeds.
Inside, the Bronco Sport boasts an attractive design and a plethora of popular features. The little ute also has an impressive amount of space and numerous innovations. While its wheelbase is shorter than the Escape, the baby Bronco has an upright seating position and a decent amount of rear-seat legroom. Its roofline rises in the rear, providing ample headroom and
enough cargo volume to fit two outdoor bikes. The cargo hold can have a slide-out table for work, a 400-watt power inverter, and LED lights in the rear gate for overhead lighting. The rear gate features a glass hatch and a built-in bottle opener. The Badlands model comes with wash- able, rubberized flooring and upholstery that is easy to clean, but the floor material looks unsightly. Another neat trick is the storage bin that is found under the back seats.
Every Bronco Sport features a 13.2-inch touch- screen that supports Ford’s Sync 4 software; a 12.3-inch digital gauge display is also standard. Sync 4 features wireless Apple CarPlay and An- droid Auto, in-dash navigation, and SiriusXM satellite radio. A six-speaker stereo is standard, but a 10-speaker B&O sound system is an op- tion on the Outer Banks and Badlands models.
2025 Ford Bronco Sport models MSRP start at $30,995 and go up to $40,115. Well priced for the various combinations of features.

The Marlins Have Shown
Some Winning Ways
by LARRY TURNER
Expectations for the new Marlins organization and team were
tempered going into their
initial season, but to most
everyone’s surprise the team
came hot out of the box at
the season’s start. Whereas
effective pitching had been
expected, hitters outdueled those on the mound for the first several games.
The team continues to display great energy and effort even though wins have been more difficult to achieve as the season wears on. Speaking of wearing, baseball at the pro- fessional level continues to be somewhat
boring even when the home team is winning. There is sim- ply too much inaction when compared to other seasonal sports like basketball and hockey. The commissioner’s office needs to continue to find ways to speed things up
and create more exciting activity.
There is unquestionably talent on the roster on which to build a competitive group. At the present though, management and the players are to be congratulated for their respective performances. We look forward to continued improvement and excitement.

Summer Foods
For A Smaller Waistline
by ROBERTA B. TURNER
Summer is the time to really enjoy being out- doors. For those of us in South Florida, that translates into a day at the beach, relaxing by the pool, enjoying our outdoor parks and playing your favorite sport be it tennis, golf or volleyball.
It is also a time when we can indulge in some unhealthy eating and drinking habits. You know
the kind of stuff that appeals to you that is simply not good for you. I can name a few like a cheeseburger, fried shrimp, a mojito and, even worse, a frozen daiquiri. Talk about bloat.
With the large variety of fresh fruit at its peak over the summer, there are lots of waist-friendly foods and drinks that are just as delicious and much healthier for you.
36 THE LIGHT JULY / AUGUST 2025

Entrees
Chicken Kebabs
Skewers and summer seem to go together, so a healthy choice when thinking of cooking outdoors would be chicken with a variety of differ- ent vegetables. A combination of chicken breasts and thighs with sweet potato, onion, mushrooms and your favorite green vegetable, will provide you with fiber, vitamins and antioxidants, along with your protein.
Grilled Salmon
Instead of another burger on the grill, lighten up your summer fare by enjoying wild-caught salmon. Salmon is full of protein and omega-3, and is a heart-healthy choice. Wild salmon has lower levels of inflammation promoting omega-6 and has higher omega-3 levels.
Maine Lobster
There is nothing more delicious than
a freshly-cooked lobster, and you’ll be treating yourself to better health. A one- pound lobster packs just about 260 calories but contains more than 50 grams of filling protein, as well as bloat-fighting potassium. Lobster is also a great source of omega-3, making it a great addition and
a healthy choice.
Shrimp
This coral-colored
crustacean is also a
good source of inflam- mation-fighting omega-3,
which may help speed up
your weight-loss efforts. Steamed shrimp are also a low-calorie source of protein. They are easy to clean and take just minutes to cook. They can be served hot or chilled.
Vegetables Or Side Dishes
Spinach
Whether you enjoy spinach as a salad or simply sautéed as a veg- etable, spinach is rich with vitamins A and C as well as folate. Another popular use of this vegetable is to toss it into your breakfast shake or smoothie for an added dose of nutrients and fiber.
Portobello Mushrooms
The portobello mushroom is a flavorful, low-fat substitute for meat, as well as a good choice for a side dish that pairs well with heart-healthy ingredients like garlic and olive oil. The portobello is as good for your taste buds as it is for your waistline. Researchers have found portobello mushrooms ef- fective at minimizing insulin spikes, staving off cravings and keeping those unwanted pounds at bay.
Corn on the Cob
Making corn part of your summer- time menu is an easy way to make your meals healthier in an instant. In addition to packing nearly 2 grams of fiber in every 60-calorie ear, corn is a good source of lutein and zeaxanthin, which
have been linked to lower rates of age-related macular degeneration.
Tomatoes
There are so many ways to eat tomatoes, and they are a great way to load your diet with antioxidants while also making the meal more filling. You can enjoy them in an omelet, soup, salad, salsa, and as a excellent side dish by drizzling them with olive oil and tossing
them on the grill.

Summer Foods
For A Smaller Waistline
Fruit
Cherries
Cherry-picked for their health ben- efits, these tasty summer superfoods do more than just satisfy your sweet tooth. Cherries are loaded with resver-atrol, an antioxidant that packs some serious body-transform- ing powers. Research has shown that cherries can increase metabolism and help you burn more calories. They have also found that resveratrol supplementation reduced weight gain and bone demineralization.
Blueberries
Going blue is a good thing, and blue- berries are plentiful. Each time you grab a handful of these sun-ripened berries, you’re steering a course to- ward better health. While they don’t share the same reddish hue as many sources of resveratrol, blueberries are still loaded with it, making them a great choice for anyone trying to transform their body. They’re also a low-glycemic food which means they don’t result in drastic insulin spikes brought about by other sweet treats.
Hummus
This is one of the best slimming summer foods because chickpeas are full of protein, fiber and vitamins. They blend well with tahini and lemon juice, and dipping crunchy vegetables in hummus saves calories and
Guacamole
Avocados are a good source of healthy monounsaturated fat, while add-on ingredients, like jalapeños, lime juice, and quercetin-rich onions, have all been linked to weight loss. When you think guacamole
you automatically think chips, but this health food can be used with various vegetables, eaten as a side dish and is often paired at breakfast with eggs.
Strawberries
A cup of strawberries has just 47 calories and packs nearly 3 grams of gut-health-promoting fiber, vitamin C, and plenty of energiz- ing B6. Strawberries are also a vegan-friendly source of iron, which can help fend off anemia-related fatigue and weight gain.
Peaches
Peaches are a good source of vita- min C and beta-carotene, both of which have been linked to improve- ments in immune health and lower weight. Peaches are delicious plain, and they blend easily so you can make them into a no-sugar added dessert by blending them and freezing them.
Snacks
Artichokes
One medium artichoke packs in almost 7 grams of fiber, and the veggie is as versatile as it is delicious. Marinate and chop artichoke hearts and toss them over a salad, fold them into a veggie omelet, or boil or broil them whole and drizzle with lemon juice, for a quick and satisfying snack.
Cucumbers
The super-hydrating cucumber is low in calories, loaded with inflam- mation-fighting antioxidants, and can even reduce your risk of hyper- tension. Some research indicates that cucumber juice may reduce blood pressure. Cucumbers are great when dipped in hummus.
loads up on extra fiber.

Watermelon
Sparkling Watermelon Cocktail
This bubbly and refreshing watermelon cocktail is ready in just 5 minutes.
Watermelon is made up of more than 90 percent water. This sweet treat is a great way to stay cool and hydrated, even on the hottest summer days. Even better, research has shown those who consumed watermelon lowered their cholesterol, decreased the amount of plaque in their arteries, and lost more weight than a group given a non-watermelon carbohydrate solution.
Prep time: 5 mins Total time: 5 mins Serves: 2 drinks
INGREDIENTS
• 4 cups watermelon cubed • 2 limes
• 11⁄2 cups ginger ale
• 3 oz tequila
• Lime wedges for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
