Members of the Student 2
Leaders Organization raised Q

the curtain on a new scene cn
this fall. They wrote the CD
script of events and set the (D
mood for the year. Students
played the lead roles, but Mr. A. Corcoran, Mr. W. Inglis, T.
without the proper planning,
the year wouldn't have been

quite the success it was!
At one corner of the

scene was the Discipline
Board, made up of four stu
dents and five faculty mem
bers. Their purpose was to
instill a sense of personal

responsibility in students
and maintain good order.

Their time and effort paid
off, creating a brighter at

mosphere at MHS.

Student Body Senate

The 1979-80 Student
Body Senate was the lead
ing force in what turned
out to be a year of
changes. The Senate
worked long hard hours
during the summer evalu
ating the MHS constitu
tion and making the nec
essary changes. These
modifications improved
communications not only
between students and stu
dents but also students
and teachers. The Senate
was also responsible for
the election of homeroom
officers, lunch line su
pervision, and daily an
nouncements .

JAPANESE CLUB: Pres. D. Chow,
Sec. T. Ishikawa, Treas. M. Mau,

Hawaiian Club

Living in Hawaii, we

are fortunate to be sur tn

rounded by so many dif

ferent and exciting cul

tures. However, we

should also be aware and

appreciative of our own

unique culture. The o
Hawaiian Club brought to

life our rich heritage

and shared it with the

entire student body.

They were actively in Q

volved in the spectacular

Aloha Week program, which

was just another way of Q
showing their Hawaiian

spirit. The Hawaiian

Club carried on the tra

dition of "aloha".

and exotic place. The
members of the Japanese

to experience the true
Japan without actually
being there. With many

O projects to keep them
busy, the members "lived"
Japan. The entire school
also became involved with

8 the Japanese Club through
their hot dog sales and
their performance during

residence, MHS can proud

Spanish/German Clubs

Hawaii--the "melting
pot" of the Pacific--what
better place to bring to
gether the cultures of
the world? The German
and Spanish Clubs took
advantage of their unique
location and encouraged
students to explore the
diverse backgrounds and
customs of Spain and Ger
many. By giving Mary
knoll students a taste
of these exciting foreign
cultures, the German and
Spanish Clubs helped to
make this blend we call
Hawaii a little richer.

Liturgy Committee

The feeling of being

close to God is an expe

rience that not everyone

has shared. The Liturgy

Committee's main purpose

was to bring spiritual

light into the lives of

MHS students. Members

tried to do this by plan

ning school liturgies,

organizing retreats, and

scheduling masses for

clubs and homerooms in

the Upper Room. By let

ting their lights shine cn
on Maryknoll’s entire

student body, Liturgy

Committee members helped

to spark other flames

othroughout the school.

"Do a good turn for

the sake of being help

ful." This saying best

describes the caring

piembers of Hui Kokua.

They gave of themselves

unselfishly, devoting

their time and energy to

lending a helping hand.

Members did their best

to reach out to the poor

and the handicapped.

o Among the many projects
that Hui Kokua sponsored
were the Halloween Can
dy Drive, the Christmas

HARC party, and the Wai

With good intentions and
hard work, Hui Kokua

This year's Assembly z
Committee has broadened <D
its horizons. During the u
school year they concen o
trated their efforts on o
improving our school as
semblies. They wanted to
make the assemblies in
formative but at the same
time entertaining. They
made their debut with a
career motivation talk by
Andy Bumatai which kept

every student roaring
with laughter. This was
only the beginning of the
Assembly Committee's in

novative handiwork.

Getting the presses

rolling and keeping them

rolling were the major

objectives of the Chi Rho

Knoller staff. These

young journalists were

able not only to develop

their writing abilities,

but to experience the

trials and tribulations

of being on a newspaper

staff. Working under

pressure, they gained a

tn sense of responsibility
and the importance of

time. Staffers also

gained practical experi

ence in writing and using

Who said the big CH ___
band era was dead? At
Maryknoll the love and and

appreciation of music 3
lives on in the high
tJ
school band. Composed of
both high school Q

grade school students, —
the band met during
rt
eighth periods to prac-
tice and play. They made Q

their debut during the
annual Christmas assem-
bly. Their performance
reflected the long hours

of practice and patience,
proving that the spirit
of music is very much
alive.

Band

Glee Club

The MHS Glee Club
started the year off
right on key! Their per
formances in Rogers Hall
and at Arcadia were only
the barest indications of
their promising talent.
As the year progressed,
their self-confidence
grew. This was due to
the practice they put in
and the positive re
sponses they received
from their audiences.
Their poise and stage pre
sence were definitely to
their advantage, as the
Glee Club ended their an
nual run on a high note.

brella,
Civil Air Patrol

Maryknoll's Civil
Air Patrol program has
always prided itself in

saying that it's been
responsible for producing

quite a collection of
responsible young adults.

This year was no excep
tion. CAP'S twenty-three

members learned a lot a-
bout themselves and about

working with others.
Cadets also developed a
sense of leadership and
grew in self-respect and

self-discipline. CAP
helped to lay the founda

tions for the firm char
acters of mature and con

scientious individuals.

Representing Mary
knoll was a hard task to
take on, but it was a
challenge. The Inter
school Committee accepted
the challenge and tried
to promote better rela

and private schools all
over the island. Members
shared information about
the different schools,
comparing and exchanging
notes which shed some in
teresting light on the
strengths and weaknesses
of Maryknoll.

was proud to entertain
MHS by providing monthly Q

dances throughout the W
year. Members showed G
their dedication by giv-
ing up numerous lunch- •

hours in order to plan
action-packed fun-filled
nights. Planning in-

eluded advertising
through posters, printing

this committee, MHS stu-

Prom Committee

Creativity, imagina
tion, and the ability to
handle the last-minute
rush are characteristics
that every Prom committee
member should have. The
designing of the Winter
Ball and Jr./Sr. Prom
took many long hours at
the drawing board. The
drafting of these
projects involved reserv
ing a room and choosing
favors, bids, and center
pieces. The final events
were completed success
fully only because of the
Prom Committee.

a new image this year.
They accepted the privi
lege and responsibility
of being a standing com
mittee. The fun-loving
members had the task of
being the public rela
tions "firm" of MHS.
They promoted school
spirit by selling ribbons
and T-shirts and adverti

posters, television and
radio, they informed the
student body of all

Maryknoll's Math
Club soared to new
heights this year. Their
success was due mainly to
their intense prepara
tions prior to each meet.
Three times a week mem
bers met during first
period. They worked out
sample problems to im
prove their basic skills
and to cultivate speed
and accuracy. Although
these exercises took
time, they really paid
off in the end--as the
Math Club's rankings at
the many meets proved.

197-9-80 KA MCjf ' |ANE STAFF: head editor Lisa Ishikawa, assistant
editors Haioe- ristol and Corinne Wong, advisor Miss Ch. Lee.

"Eat yearbook, breathe yearbook, and live yearbook!" That was the
motto of the 1979-80 Ka Moe' Uhane Staff. Dedicated members of the
staff discovered that yearbook was not only painstaking, unending work,
but also a time to get to know new and old friends better. Yearbook
meant getting a group of people together for a year to work as a unit.
Many people don't realize the hardships this staff endured m order to
get a yearbook out on time and still have a presentable finished pro
duct. They gained a sense of ultimate accomplishment with every little
task they performed. Their deepest satisfaction and pride came,
however, whenever a smile resulted from their handiwork. It's been
said that a book lasts forever, but in this.case, it's the feeling of

friendship that grew between staffers that is timeless.
