The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award for Extraordinary

Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses - Mary Washington Healthcare

Nurses is sponsored by the DAISY Foundation and MWH. The DAISY Foundation,
a
not-for-profit group, established the national Daisy Award in memory
of J. Patrick
Barnes, a married father who died at age 33 of the autoimmune
disease idiopathic
thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Barnes’ caregivers
had shown such compassion
and clinical skill during his final weeks that
his family launched the foundation and
award to recognize extraordinary
nurses in the United States and abroad.

The program honors special nurses who are outstanding role models of
compassionate,
exceptional care and clinical excellence. The DAISY Award
program has
been in place at MWH since 2009, giving patients and their family
members,
other Associates, and physicians the opportunity to formally recognize
those nurses who serve as role models while performing their direct patient
care
activities. Nominations are reviewed monthly by members of the Shared
Governance Performance Excellence Council, and winners are selected based
on
DAISY Award criteria.

Daisy Award winners are formally recognized and presented with the award
and
certificate in a special department-based ceremony. Their nursing
and professional
colleagues are invited to attend the ceremony where the
Senior Vice President and
Chief Nursing Officer presents the awards. DAISY
Award recipients sign a banner
that hangs on their units until the next
winner is selected. Photographs of all DAISY
Award winners are displayed
in the hospital atrium for all Associates, physicians,
and community members to see.

Melissa Hall has devoted much of her career to fostering strong
partnerships
with EMS and trauma care. As a program manager
for the Mary Washington
Hospital Trauma Center, she has
developed many partnerships with regional
agencies to
coordinate EMS and trauma outreach for area providers. With
the support of her staff, she has implemented and overseen
many educational
events for the EMS community throughout the Rappahannock
region, in addition
to organizing educational opportunities at individual EMS
agencies. She
has recently strengthened Mary Washington’s Trauma Center
collaboration
with the Rappahannock EMS Council and the Trauma System
Committee. At
the state level, Melissa has supported and coordinated several
Virginia
Office of EMS EMSAT educational videos to enhance EMS patient care
across
the Commonwealth. Her work with the implementation of the State Field
Trauma Triage Guidelines has been tireless. Melissa Hall’s significant
contributions
to Virginia’s local, regional and state EMS system
are exceptional and greatly valued
by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Our Mission at Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) and our Vision set the
direction for the Health System. The Vision clarifies our desire to focus

The Nursing Division

The overall mission of the nursing division is to provide high quality
evidence based patient care. As nurses
we have the autonomy and accountability
to structure our professional practice and performance to meet
the mission
and vision of the health system. Performance improvement is continual
to ensure continuity of

care through implementation of the Nursing process,
evidence-based guidelines, and collaboration with
other disciplines.

Vision: The Nursing Vision creates the direction for the Nursing Division’s
Strategic Plan: World-class
nurses in magnet environments where Quality,
Innovation, Knowledge, and Leadership define our Nursing
culture. The
Nursing Strategic Plan which is reflective of the organization’s
Strategic Plan guides nursing's
professional direction incorporating
the ANCC Magnet components.

Nursing Leadership is responsible and accountable to select and provide
competent staff, to continually
develop clinical expertise and competence,
and to demonstrate professional accountability for evidence-
based practice,
quality, research, and safe, effective patient care. We use our Shared
Governance Model
to create professional accountability with the Nursing
Associates and interdisciplinary team members.

The Advancing Clinical Excellence (ACE) program, designed for nurses working
in clinical settings, allows
these nurses to advance professionally while
remaining at the bedside. The Professional Nursing Practice
Board provides
oversight for the program. The Board is accountable to review and approve
nursing
advancement of professional registered nurses at MWHC according
to designated criteria in each of the
four levels of the ACE program;
to support the philosophy, vision, and goals of MWHC professional nursing
by maintaining oversight of the nursing advancement process and review
performance across the hospital
clinical services set forth in the Professional
Nursing Practice Standards; to provide a path for career
promotion for
nurses through mentoring and development; and to provide a consistent
structure for
evaluating nurse performance within the MWHC Human Resources
performance appraisal system.

As Nurses, our professional accountabilities are to provide evidence-based
care, high quality patient care,
participate in research and quality improvement
initiatives, engage in professional development activities to
enhance
our practice, and monitor compliance within our practice to continually
improve patient and staff
outcomes.

employed physicians).
A total of 267 nurses were hired in our health system in 2015.

Shared Governance
The professional nursing shared governance structures at Mary Washington
and
Stafford Hospitals are the mechanism by which nurses, in collaboration
with our
colleagues in the organization, execute the principles of shared
governance and
decision making in processes that impact daily clinical
practice and goal setting with
MWHC. The professional nursing shared governance
structure is designed to
engage nurses at all levels of the organization
in an equitable fashion so that the
decisions made reflect the needs of
both patient and staff and provide for quality
outcomes.

Clinical Practice Council - Mary Washington Hospital

Mission


Clinical Practice Council (CPC) is accountable to the Coordinating Council
(CC) for
development, implementation and evaluation of nursing practice
guidelines,
procedures, documentation and standards.


2015 Accomplishments

Improved process for liquid protein supplement administration documentation
thereby increasing compliance with documentation.
Completed central line policy review and provided recommendations for
revision
Hypoglycemia protocol.
Reviewed and made revisions to Ticket to Ride process to ensure ongoing
communication of patient status/needs between departments.
Created Electronic Chart Check policy.

Nursing Quality Council - Mary Washington Hospital
