ON LOCATION

EMERALD LAKE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

N amed by mountain guides who discovered it in the 19th century, Emerald Lake owes its
distinctive green hue to glacial sediment suspended in its waters. Situated in Canada’s Yoho
Natural Park, close to the Trans-Canadian Highway, the lake’s stunning scenery has made it
an irresistable magnet for sightseers.

The lake is over 4,000ft above sea level which results in it remaining frozen from November until
June. The peaks that surround it, along with local prevailing winds, ensure a very moist climate
with heavy rain during summer and large amounts of snowfall in winter. Eagles, wolves, bears and
moose are known to frequent the area, making it a truly magnificent location to connect with nature.

PRAGUE CASTLE, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Recognised by The Guinness Book of Records as the largest ancient castle in the world,
it attracts around two million visitors per year. Getting to the castle can be as enjoyable
and fascinating as the visit itself. Approaching over the bustling Charles Bridge, admiring
the baroque statues and taking in views of the castle in the distance. Once across the river, you
can wend your way along cobbled streets past ornate buildings as you steadily ascend to the
castle itself. The effort that goes into the climb is more than rewarded by the panoramic views of
Prague. Alternatively, take the funicular railway to the top of Petrin Hill and stroll down towards
the castle past the delightful Strahov Monastery, perhaps stopping at the Monastery’s Brewery for
refreshments on the way.

Prague Castle is not a single structure but a ‘castle complex’ consisting of several notable
buildings, the most imposing being St Vitus’ Cathedral which has looked down upon the Vltava
since 1344. Older still is St George’s Basilica, the oldest surviving church building within the castle,
founded in 920, expanded in 973, and rebuilt after a fire in 1142. Also worth a look is Golden
Lane, a row of 16th-century houses which offer a revealing glimpse into the lives of past citizens of
Prague.

CRUISE

CONTROL

Globally, cruising is very much a growing market with an army of
devotees. A significant number of travellers remain immune to

cruising’s charms however and will be quick to offer reasons why
cruising is not for them. We take a look at this buoyant market
sector and attempt to challenge some of those assumptions

86 inspired-travel.co.uk

CRUISING

Between 2009 and 2017, the
number of cruise passengers
increased by almost 45 per cent
from 17.8 million to 25.8 million.
“But why? What does a cruise have to
offer?” I hear you ask. Imagine visiting a
new restaurant and sampling a wide range
of dishes on a taster menu. You’ll quickly
be able to work out what you like and
want to return to, and what you don’t and
know to avoid. Cruising can offer a similar
experience for your holiday - the chance
to see and experience many different
locations during one holiday. You may fall
in love with some and vow to return for
an extended stay, while others may have
less appeal and can be ruled out as future
holiday destinations.

Some people assume that sleeping and
relaxing on a boat for a significant amount
of your holiday restricts the number of
activities you can indulge in and sights
you can see. When you consider that
a single cruise could offer the chance
to visit several Greek islands, a handful
of Caribbean nations, or a selection of
Mediterranean cities in one holiday, this
argument doesn’t seem to hold a lot of
water.

Possibly the most widespread
misconception about cruise holidays
is that they’re only suitable for older
travellers. It is true that the average cruise
passenger is over 50, but research shows
that 1.6 million under 18s set sail with
their families during 2016. With ships
offering a wealth of activities for children,
and kids clubs to keep them occupied
while the adults relax, a cruise can be the
perfect family holiday. River cruises, in
particular, have been increasingly popular
with younger travellers in recent years.
The opportunity to explore secluded

The size and level of luxury offered

Robot ambassador greets
passengers at Munich Airport

From mid-February, passengers arriving
at Munich Airport will be greeted by
Josie Pepper, a 120-centimetre tall robot
that has “sparkling, round eyes and a
pleasant voice”, according to its creators.
Josie will be on duty in terminal 2 to
help passengers, offering directions to a
gate or a specific shop. Initially, English-
speaking Josie will meet passengers as
they head towards the shuttle connecting
the main terminal to the satellite building.

Robots are becoming an increasingly
common sight at airports. In late 2016,
Glasgow became the first UK airport to
recruit a robotic ambassador which was
named GLAdys. As well as greeting and
assisting customers, robots can now be
found cleaning airports, serving drinks,
and even performing security duties.
