Welcome to Home Tour

Dear Neighbors and Friends:
Please join the Pacific Palisades Woman’s Club on Sunday, November 12, 2017

to celebrate, enjoy and learn from the diverse ways we live in our community.
The members of PPWC have been working for months to organize an inspiring
and educational day at three special Pacific Palisades homes. These homes include
one of the earliest and most prominent homes built in the Palisades, a mid-Century
modern with whimsical updates and an AIA award winning home that incorporates
green technology. The furnishings, gardens and outdoor entertaining spaces at
each home are delightful and sure to spark ideas for your own home. And what
is Southern California living without cars? Tesla will be offering test rides and
the Auto Gallery will be showcasing Italian cars. Maybe you have room in your
garage for a new car? We invite you to come and enjoy the day with us.

Proceeds from this annual event support our
community. Over the years, PPWC has donated
over $1 million to support educational, recreational,
beautification and community service projects in the
Palisades. The funds donated are raised primarily
from this joyful event, which has brought community
members together each year for 32 years.

Help us make a difference by starting your holiday gift shopping at the Boutique
at Palisades Charter High School. Parking is complimentary at Pali High and you can
pick up your Home Tour tickets at Will Call in front of Mercer Hall. A complimentary
shuttle service will take you to and from each home on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m. Plan to come to the Boutique at 10 a.m. or return to Pali High for shopping
and eating at one of our fantastic food trucks. Proceeds from the Boutique and Home
Tour will be invested in the Palisades community through the PPWC grant process.

We could not accomplish this event without the generous help of our sponsors,
homeowners, patrons, volunteers and members. We want to extend our heartfelt
thanks to each of them. Please take your time to admire the results of the designers’
hard work, the beautiful custom-designed floral arrangements, the cars on display,
the musicians, the food and, above all, enjoy your neighbors. We are fortunate to
live in this community, among people who share their time and assets to make
this a better place.

Join us in this celebration of community!

Gratefully,

Catherine Ruddy Robin Weitz
President Vice-President and Home Tour Chairman

About Us

This year the Pacific Palisades Woman’s Club celebrates its 92nd Anniversary
of fun, friendship and philanthropy. The PPWC is a non-profit organization that
brings together energetic and socially-minded women in friendship to serve others
and our community and to preserve the distinctive character of the Palisades. We
are dedicated to making this a community-centered town where family and
businesses thrive. Through the club’s diverse programming, philanthropic efforts
and community outreach, the members make a difference, have fun, create new
vibrant friendships, and learn a great deal while enjoying themselves and the
company of fellow members.

Over the past decade, the PPWC has distributed nearly $1 million to over 75
community organizations. Our charitable recipients include area nonprofits, public
and private schools, our local fire stations, the elderly, heath-related causes, and
various environmental organizations. The PPWC sponsors numerous annual
community events which include the 90th Birthday Party, Annual Free Influenza
Vaccination Clinic for Seniors, Halloween Window Painting, the Pacific Palisades
Home Tour, Grant Giveaway Night and many other community programs.

The PPWC Annual Holiday Home Tour and Boutique is not only a delight to
all community attendees, but the most significant means of PPWC’s philanthropy.
Our membership joins together to plan, produce and promote the event, including
hosting and guiding guests through the homes on the day of the Tour. Local
homeowners, designers, florists, merchants, artists, and musicians donate their
services to enhance the homes’ decor and beauty.

In addition to the important philanthropic ventures of the organization, the
additional goal is to revitalize the clubhouse as a community treasure by renovating
its facility located at 901 Haverford Avenue and to continue using the facility for
educational, cultural and social programs for the community and its members.

As a result of the hard work and foresight of the civic-minded founding members
of the PPWC, we are the custodians of this historic clubhouse that most assuredly
would be impossible to duplicate in today’s dollars. Your support is your vote to
maintain this landmark treasure, support its members in their pursuit of the
organizations’ philanthropic endeavors and to provide enriching programs for
the club’s members and community.

With over 120 members, the PPWC is a strong, committed group dedicated to
serving our community and building the bonds that help it thrive. We invite
women in the area to learn more about us at www.ThePPWC.org.

before moving to Oakland to start Umé Studio with her partner. You will find
their offerings of unique and high-design home accessories here.

On the fashion side, making their Palisades debuts will be Marina del Rey-based
fashion designer and former Elite model, Connie Robersen, whose chic and elegant
jackets are sold through the Opera League of L.A. at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
You will also find Studio City-based designer Jane Mohr, a graduate of Art Center
College of Design and former stylist and editorial fashion photographer for
some of the top European fashion magazines.

What’s a fun day without delicious food and
entertainments? Joining us this year will be three food trucks: The Beignet Truck,
ranked by DineLA as one of the top 10 food trucks in L.A.; Mapuche, a native
Argentinian food truck with Patagonian flavors that was written up in the L.A.
Times; and one local favorite, Cousin’s Maine Lobster Truck.

Providing entertainment throughout the day will be some of our favorite local
performers. Enjoy the Fancy Feet Dancers from 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Greg Alper’s

Pacific Palisades’ historic “Castle by the Sea” will open its doors
to the Home Tour to share many of its lovingly restored rooms.
The Beaux Arts-style palazzo, often wrongly thought to be the
Getty Villa, was built in 1927 for Leon Kauffman and his wife,
Clemence, by architect Kenneth MacDonald, Jr. It was furnished
with Victorian furniture and custom Persian carpets running the
length of the ballroom and hallway. Despite the fact that the style
was then considered somewhat old-fashioned for Los Angeles, the
magnificent home was featured in Architectural Digest in 1928. At
that time, the home had an organ, a car-wash, topiary gardens and a
funicular down to the beach, all of which are now gone.

The exterior driveway wall is topped with four female forms inviting
visitors to enter through the ornate gates. Kauffman was a wealthy
wool merchant and the sculptural decorations on the exterior and
interior incorporate rams’ heads to reflect that background. The
current owners, who lost a similar home in Poland during WWII,
knew the house was meant for them because their family crest also
included sheep.

The Kauffmans spent $1 million bringing in the finest old-world
craftsmanship in creating a lavish home that includes a 67-foot tall
grand entry hall with a spiral stairway, ornate balustrade and gold

13

bordered mosaic. The living room/ballroom boasts mahogany paneling on the
floors and walls, imported from Thailand. The 35-foot high ceilings are hand-
painted. Surprisingly, the crystal chandeliers were from the historic Los Angeles
furniture store, Barker Brothers. The current owner has lovingly located antiques
that make the enormous room warm and inviting while keeping the sense that
you will be joined momentarily by European nobility.

A patio runs the length of the ballroom offering a chance to step through the
arched doors to enjoy the ocean along with an iconic statue or sit at a table.

The circular dining room looks over Pacific Coast Highway, which did not
exist when the home was built. A fireplace cleverly hides fire damage the current
owner found to the oak walls when the home was most recently purchased. The
Venetian-domed ceiling has been restored to its original state.

The kitchen and butler’s pantry have been renovated recently but blend in
seamlessly with the rest of the historic home, with custom cabinets made in
Mexico to match the rich carving on an antique found by the owner.

A majestic hallway leads from the kitchen to an oak paneled library with a
coffered ceiling.

Upstairs, the hallway has an early form of a skylight. The bedrooms are ornately
decorated with antiques that carry on the palatial theme. A round sitting room
adjoins the master bedroom, offering an ocean view. The bathrooms have the
original tile and fixtures and extra-long bathtubs.

15

After the deaths of the Kauffmans in the early 1930s, the home was vacant
except for a caretaker for 20 years. It was then auctioned off for $71,000. By
then, the construction of Pacific Coast Highway or the widening of Porto Marina
had weakened the hillside. The house has recently been stabilized with 30 caissons
reaching down to bedrock. More work is planned for the grounds.

The home has been featured in numerous photo shoots and videos. Celebrities
such as Lady Gaga, Heidi Klum, Angelina Jolie, Robert Downey, Jr., Rod Stewart
and Robert Pattinson have been photographed here.

At the end of a cul-de-sac that long-time Palisadians have
never heard of, sits a mid-century post and beam home that
seems a little different than the rest. First, there’s an Eames
inspired play house on a side yard. And then, there’s the wall and
garage that are wrapped in the commissioned work of a well-respected
L.A. street artist. Something creative is going on here. The front gate
opens onto a courtyard of drought resistant plants and stones that
lead to the glass-door entryway to the house. The first piece of art,
Summer Love by Andy Davis hangs at the entryway across from a
metal abstract sculpture. The front part of the house is one big open
space . . . divided only by a fireplace wall. The space hosts a kitchen,
den, living and dining area. And it’s here that you’ll find the home’s
most talked about piece of art: The Pour by Hy Farber, a piece that
defies gravity with its clever use of layer upon layer of plywood to
form a constant stream of coffee that spills onto the base of the piece.

The kitchen is clean and simple. The cabinetry is from one of the
first LEED Certified companies in Italy. And the use of drawers as
well as high cabinets makes this kitchen easy to use. The Caesarstone
island comfortably seats four and was intentionally built a few

23

inches taller than standard islands to make it easier on the back. The oven will
immediately catch your eye because of its unique look. It will win your heart
when you hear that you can cook and carve Thanksgiving dinner in about an
hour. Three knotted light pendants in maple line the length of the island.

Like the entire house, the den is a mix of old and new. New shelves house flea
market finds collected over the past 20 years. The couches are new, but are separated
by a Charles Hollis Jones coffee table. A black and white art collection features
three Thurston Hopkins prints. And black and white art from flea markets fits
nicely right beside. The vintage pieces throughout the house add an undeniable
charm and individuality as they pay homage to the era in which the house was built.

Whimsy is a recurring theme and is expressed most prominently in the kids’
bedrooms. Wallpaper shouts out “fun” in both rooms. Color and patterns and art
(some hung at a child’s height) adorn each space and while they share wallpapers,
(but in different colors) they are different enough to reveal a lot about both
personalities. Look closely in the “Jack-and-Jill” bathroom and you’ll find an
elephant mosaic surrounding the tub.

The master bath and suite are open and airy and both invite nature right in.
A sitting wall, inspired by Charles Kratka’s LAX mosaic tunnels, was built right
outside the bath tub window to add color to the mostly white bathroom. Modern

25

taupe glass sliding doors hide the homeowner’s closets and laundry facilities.
A stone-floored steam shower is good for the feet and healing for the body.

The minimally landscaped backyard features an amoebic shaped pool, two
seating areas (one for lounging, the other for conversation) and a generous guest
house . . . which is both a teen hangout as well as the owner’s office and work
out area. Add a pool table and a trampoline and you can see why it’s the most
popular place on the property.

This is an artistic home that is both stylish and thoughtful with a number of
green features. There are solar panels, the wood floors are manufactured maple,
the insulation is denim, there’s radiant heating, LEED certified cabinetry and
low VOC paint. In short, it’s a great place to live. It’s Palisades living . . . open,
natural, simple, original, and yes, even whimsical.

This AIA award-winning home for residential design replaced
a small cottage built in 1923 on a part of Uplifters Ranch.
Today it stands as an eclectic contemporary, which forcefully
adds to the architectural showcase tradition of Rustic Canyon.
Guests are greeted by a young Sycamore tree at the front gate,
planted nine years ago in keeping with the trees of the canyon.

The house has seven levels as an ode to the architect’s Maine
farmhouse upbringing. Yet high ceilings with floor to ceiling glass and
clerestory windows allow an abundance of natural light, and direct
connections to the yard and easterly hillside.

The environs of Rustic Canyon had a lot to do with this design;
the steep slope of the adjacent hill, the long, narrow, flat area at the
front of the lot, the deep shaded tree cover and lack of sun at certain
times of the day, and the requirement for privacy for a home that is
raised up off the street. During construction, the property’s grades
had to be raised, lowered and engineered to accommodate the home’s
many levels.

From the main level, visitors view the backyard which houses a
heritage oak tree and a ceramic column art piece designed by the

33

architect’s late sister, sculptor Connie Leslie. In addition, there is a saltwater
swimming pool, hot tub, outdoor shower and vegetable garden.

A baby grand piano is stationed in a music alcove off the living room. The living
room television is hidden by a vertical grain Douglas fir panel on a stainless steel
track system. Bold, colorful, exposed steel structures frame the view of the living
room and dining room in an open floor plan. The home is furnished with eclectic
art pieces and modern pieces including Saarinen tables and an orange-red leather
banquette for casual dining in the kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with a “dog
station” complete with treats, water and toys. The glass windows and doors in
the home are custom made because of the many original shapes and sizes that
the design demands. Looking out over the pool, the architect designed a low
ceilinged cozy office with cantilevered bookshelves for an award winning local
news radio reporter.

Off the dining room, a spiral staircase leads to the architect’s office and the
family TV room which has as wallpaper the homeowners’ favorite historic collection
of record covers. These areas overlook a sunken garden formed by concrete
retaining walls repurposed from the original cottage foundation and filled with
multi-textured succulents.

The entry staircase in floating bamboo treads leads up to three different bedroom

35

levels. Adjacent to the stairs, the entire two-story north wall of the entry is built
in “burnished” concrete blocks. The first level accommodates the laundry room,
linen closets and son’s bedroom. The second level is a bridge to the master suite,
and the third is the guest room (“love nest”) perched like a tree house high into
the tree branches. This suite is secured by the original turquoise, board and batt
redwood door from the original Uplifters Ranch cottage that stood on the site.
Its balcony overlooks the pool, outdoor fireplace, and oak trees.

The house is an open, exciting and dynamic environment with clerestory
windows and skylights between levels, and displays comfortable spaces for indoor/
outdoor entertainment.
