FRAGRANCE AND ANXIETY REDUCTION
Physicians at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York have found that fragrance
can be used to lessen the distress patients undergoing a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
procedure. The anxiety associated with this procedure can cause up to 10% of patients to
terminate their scans before completion. The 40 patients who were exposed to a sweet vanilla
fragrance while undergoing MRI scans experienced approximately 63% less overall anxiety than
the control group, which was not exposed to fragrance.

FRAGRANCES AND MENOPAUSE
Analyses of a study completed by Dr. Susan Schiffman at Duke University Medical Center on
menopausal woman showed an improved mood using fragrances, whether the subjects even
liked the fragrance or not. When subjects liked the fragrances, which was 83% of the time, all
six Profiles of Mood States (tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, and confusion) and the
total mood disturbance score numerically improved.
