Floral faffery

WITH JANE
JANE SCOTT is a renowned floral designer. Her simple,
stylish ideas are beautiful, easy to create and don’t cost
a fortune. This month, she makes an early summer wreath

are simple, stylish and quick to make.
BirthAdasyim’ phleeat‘hHearpwpyreath
So, grab your scissors and some garden twine
and follow my simple steps to a wallet-friendly
wreath you can love all year-long. I’ve chosen
flowers, greenery and twigs that either last for
ages out of water or dry well and stay put.

First, decide on your base material. My top
three are made with stems of pussy willow,
virginia creeper or forsythia. Check your own
stems are fresh and bendy, then gently shape
one into a hoop, binding the ends firmly
together with twine. Weave a few more lengths
around the first hoop, tucking the ends in and
checking you are keeping to a circle.

Now for the decorations. I’ve used foliage
gathered from the garden or foraged while
out walking the dog. The roses are bouquet
leftovers. Snip all your stems so they’re about
10-15cm long and gather them up in bunches of
three or five. Plan your final design by laying the
bunches out in a line.

Bind your first bunch tightly to the base with
twine. Lay the next bunch over the stems of
the first and bind. Keep going until you have
covered about a third of your base. Be sure to
tie the final bunch on securely with a double
knot. To finish, tie a strip of fabric around the
top. In true upcycling style, I used an offcut
from an old pillowcase. Your botanical beauty
is now ready to hang wherever you fancy. And
if the word wreath sounds a little too stuffy and
formal, then how about seasonal flower ring?

colourful plants will add a lovely vertical dimension with
their tapering spires rising from whirls of finely pointed
leaves. Get up close and you will notice the blooms are
dusted with pretty maroon and claret speckles too.

SO EASY TO GROW

Fans of a shady spot, foxgloves can be planted at the
back of a bed or border to form a drift of colour then
just left to get on with it. They are low-maintenance
plants that are hardy and can cope with any soil. The
common foxglove freely self-seeds so if you are lucky
you will end up with a patch of pretty pinky-purple
blooms springing up en masse where you previously
had just one plant. Cultivated foxgloves come in a
wider range of colours from pastel-creams and
pale-yellows to deep pinks and reds.

with heavily spotted petals in shades of mauve, pink,
yellow and white. It adds a spectacular presence at the
back of borders, where it will reach a height of 150cm
(£9.99/15 garden ready plants, thompson-morgan.com)
✽ A good variety for a smaller garden is the
strawberry foxglove, which has lovely pink flowers
and soft greyish-green leaves. It flowers from mid to
late summer, reaching 75cm (£13.95/3 x 9cm plants,
claireaustin-hardyplants.co.uk).
✽ If you’re looking for a white form to brighten up a
shady spot, the quick-growing white-flowered foxglove
is a lovely plant that grows up to 1.8m, with pure,
ethereal-white flowers (£4.99/9cm plant, crocus.co.uk).

POT THEM UP

Foxgloves can sometimes falter when grown in
containers if you don’t give them enough room, so
always choose a large pot. Remember how tall they
grow so plant them in the deepest pot you can find and
offer support with bamboo canes or a frame so they
don’t flop. Since container-grown foxgloves are so tall,
they can be planted very effectively surrounded by
shorter trailing plants, serving as the ‘thriller’ element
of the ‘thriller, filler, spiller’ effect. Use a rich
multi-purpose compost such as John Innes No 3
(£3.99/10L, waitrosegarden.com). Make sure the soil
never dries out. ‘Primrose Carousel’ is a new variety
that comes in creamy-yellow with large claret speckles
