explained that, although goals are always desired,
it is not exactly what Antonio is looking for him to
necessarily provide.
“I want to arrive in the box and score goals but,
in the last few games, I haven’t had the luck that
strikers sometimes get,” he reflected. “For the
manager though, whether you score or not, that
is not important.
“The problem is when you are not generating
the chances to score the goals, when you are not
arriving in the box to score – that is the problem
for the manager, not if you score or not. He always
tells me that is not the problem.”
“WE KNOW
THAT WE
HAVE A LOT OF
MATCHES IN
A YEAR AND,
IF YOU WANT
TO FIGHT FOR
EVERYTHING,
YOU NEED A
BRILLIANT
SQUAD”
This season, Sergio has also faced competition
for his starting berth from Ryan Sessegnon.
Our 2019 signing from Fulham has come back
into the fold this term after a loan spell last year
at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim and has made
an impression in our left wing-back spot. It has
certainly been an intriguing battle between
the pair thus far and it is one that our Spanish
defender clearly relishes.
“I speak a lot with Ryan. He’s a lovely guy,” he
smiled. “I remember when I started in football, I
had a team-mate older than me. He helped me; he
gave me so many tips. I loved that and so I try to do
the same for Ryan.
“We know that we have a lot of matches in a
year and, if you want to fight for everything, you
need a brilliant squad. You have to have 20 ready
players. Competition is the most important thing
for me in football because, if you think in your mind
that you will play every game, maybe you relax and
that is not the way to be.”
20
THFC Sergio Reguilon
Another hurdle Sergio has had to overcome
this season is COVID-19. Missing our 3-2 victory
at Manchester City in February due to the illness,
the Spain international admits it has been tough
to recover fully from it and he is still feeling some
of its effects.
“For me, it was difficult and still it is a little bit
difficult because, after COVID, my feeling is that
I didn’t recover 100 per cent. After COVID, when I
came back, it was very tough for me. It is still a bit
tough, but this is football, this is life, you have to be
ready for everything.”
What will have helped Sergio’s battle for full
fitness though is the international break as, over
the last two weeks, those players who remained at
Hotspur Way were put through a series of double
sessions by Antonio – challenging drills that
demonstrate the squad will not be allowed to rest
with a huge final nine games ahead of us.
“IN THE
INTERNATIONAL
BREAK, THE
PLAYERS THAT
REMAINED
HERE IN
LONDON
NEEDED
TO WORK
HARD AND
“They are tough, really tough,” he reflected on
the double sessions. “For the manager, you can
rest after the end of the season, not during it.
“Our work in them depends on the day, but it is
tactical, technical and in the gym - that’s the worst
for me. And it’s also run, run, run, run. I think it is
necessary for us though.
“We know that in the international break, the
players that remained here in London needed
to work hard, stay fit and for that, we did double
sessions. Not only one either; we did a lot. Our
team-mates were playing games, working hard for
their national teams, but we had to be ready for
when they came back so we could be at the same
level of fitness.”

GOOD PERFORMANCE GOES RILEY OWEN IN ACTION AGAINST VILLA
UNREWARDED AGAINSTVILLA
Our Under-18s were left frustrated in
front of goal as Aston Villa escaped
with the points at Hotspur Way last
Saturday (26 March).
Lining up without a number of
regular campaigners due to the
international fixtures taking place,
our young side gave a good account
of themselves and created several
chances but ultimately succumbed
to a 2-0 defeat, Todd Alcock netting a
90th-minute goal on the counter-at-
tack to finally stamp out our spirited
efforts to mount a comeback after
Dewain Sewell’s first-half strike had
given the visitors a slender lead.
