In every matchday programme this season, we’re inviting our fans to
reminisce about their first-ever Spurs game to refresh the memories
of those momentous occasions! If you’d like to appear in this feature,
drop us an email to [email protected] with a few
details of the first time you saw the mighty Spurs play!

from watching all the games I am
able to get to in our great new
stadium and on TV, I have also made
it a parallel hobby to collect all
Spurs programmes.
It was back in 1960 that I began
following the team regularly and
passionately, listening on radio and
watching them on black and white
television on Saturday nights.
Occasions when I saw them live were
sparse, as only brief highlights were
shown during late evening on the one
BBC station available then.
In those days, Spurs were top of
the table and the excitement being
generated during the glory days
meant it was a really good time to be
a fan! I was naturally at school around
this time and most of my friends
were fellow Tottenham supporters.
I later travelled consistently with
one fellow home and away, thor-
oughly enjoying seeing other teams
and grounds throughout the country.
I remember I started getting a
real desire to attend a live match

KANE’S
CLINCHER
The pivotal moment of our Premier League clash
with Newcastle United at Wembley in May 2018, as
Harry Kane fires a beauty into the top corner past
Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka for the only
goal of the game.
It was a big moment of our season as well, as
Kane’s goal – his 27th in the league in 2017/18 –
clinched a top four finish for us as Chelsea could
only draw against Huddersfield Town on the night
we beat Newcastle.
Harry’s strike came five minutes after the inter-
val when he played a one-two with Heung-Min Son
on the edge of the area and then hit a first-time shot
which gave Dubravka no chance. The Magpies put
us under some severe pressure late on, but we held
out for three huge points. Kane went on to score 30
Premier League goals that term but it wasn’t enough
to secure the Golden Boot, won by Mo Salah with
32. It was Kane’s best goals haul in a single Premier
League season though!
The England international has scored seven PL
goals against the Toon now, however this is his only
home goal with the other six all coming at St James’
Park.

Tony Marchi
MEMORIES OF MARCHI
The recent passing of our former player TONY MARCHI was a sad
moment for followers of Spurs everywhere, but for supporters of
a certain generation, Tony’s death was even more heartfelt. The
Edmonton-born former half-back holds a unique place in our history
as the only player to be at the Club when we won First Division titles in
1951 and 1961, and his passing prompted two long-standing Spurs fans to
write their own memories of a player who served us with distinction for
the best part of 14 years.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
One of our greatest-ever goalscorers, JERMAIN DEFOE, brought his
illustrious playing days to an end last week when he announced his
retirement. The scorer of 143 Spurs goals in 363 appearances, JD sits
sixth in our all-time list and to mark his retirement, we asked him for his
memories of a series of snapshots from during his Spurs career…
A DEBUT GOAL,
7 FEBRUARY 2004
(V PORTSMOUTH)
“I was always so focussed and always thought about
scoring on debuts. Leading up to my first game (right), I
just wanted to do so well. I always knew I’d get a chance
and every time that chance came, I was able to stick it
away. I signed for a big fee at the time, and I couldn’t wait
to get started. I was delighted the game came around so
quickly. I didn’t have much time to think about it, a couple
of training sessions and we were into it, bang. I got the
goal and I’d arrived, buzzing!”
ALL SMILES IN
TRAINING,
11 NOVEMBER 2011
“I really like this photo (left). Gareth always used to give it
to me. I used to say, ‘okay, no problem’. To be fair, it looks
like he’s done me there! You know what, we had such a
good dressing room at that time. Everyone was really
together. We trained hard, but we always had a laugh. I
look back at that group of players and think ‘unbelievable’.
That’s why I scored so many goals. I was always getting
chances, it was up to me to finish them off.”
A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE THFC
GOALSCORER,
25 AUGUST 2010
(V YOUNG BOYS)
“I loved that goal (right). Do you know why? The ball came
up to me, they thought I’d handballed it, but I didn’t. It was
all about my body shape, and I turned with my shoulder
and finished it. The shot hit the inside of the post and went
in. I just remember all the white flags, a European night at
the Lane, that all-white kit. I loved it. I was on a high at the
time. I’d just come back from the World Cup (2010) where
I’d scored, then I’d scored a hat-trick for England against
Bulgaria at Wembley. That was an amazing time.”

A FIVE-STAR
SHOW, 22
NOVEMBER
2009
(V WIGAN ATHLETIC)
“As soon as the game finished
(left) it was like, ‘where’s the ball?’
I remember waving up to my mum,
all my family were there. It was such
an unbelievable feeling. During the
game, I knew. I knew when I scored the
fourth goal that only Alan Shearer and
Andy Cole had scored five in a game
in the Premier League. When I scored
the fifth…Crouchy thought I was
going to square it to him, no chance!”
SCORING ON THE
WORLD STAGE,
23 JUNE 2010
(V SLOVENIA)
“I wanted this World Cup goal (right) so much. I’d
wanted it before, in 2006. You always want your
goals to stand for something, and that was a big
goal. If we’d have lost that game, we would have
been out at the group stage. I felt like I was thrown
in at the deep end, as well, because I didn’t start
against USA or Algeria and before Slovenia, Fabio
Capello asked me, ‘are you ready?’ and I knew I
was going to score. I felt so sharp in training. He
probably looked at me and thought, ‘right, I need
to play him’. I knew I needed to make an impact. I’d
been waiting for the chance for years and there
was no way that game was going to pass me by.”
A GREAT
CAMARADERIE,
19 MAY 2009
“That’s the Crossbar Challenge from Soccer AM,
when Jermaine Jenas hit the bar (left). You can see
all the boys in the background. I remember JJ hit
it and we all piled on. I loved that kit as well. Look
at the players there, Gaz, Modric, Lennon, Gio,
Keano, Daws. I’d fancy that squad back together
now! So many leaders in there as well. Great, great
days.”
