2022 AFA CONVENTION | LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS 5

AFA President’s Welcome

WELCOME TO LITTLE ROCK, AFA AND FIA MEMBERS!

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 51st Annual AFA
Convention. Little Rock is a great town, and this is an outstanding venue,
and I hope you will enjoy yourselves both during and after all of our
daily events.

When I think about 51 years of AFA conventions, it makes me remember
the hundreds (maybe even thousands) of volunteers who make this
happen for us each and every year. We certainly have a great staff,
but we simply could not pull this week off without our numerous
Committee Chairs and Committee members, our Board of Directors, our
Host Chapters – the Arkansas Horseshoeing Association this year – and
our member volunteers who help out in so many ways every day we’re
here. So, to all of you who share your time with us both this week and all
year long – thank you. You are appreciated more than we can say.

It is my hope that you will all have a terrific week here in Little Rock,
that you will learn a great deal, enjoy watching some of the best
competitors in the nation, visit our friends in the FIA MarketPlace, and
most especially, enjoy your time with each other. Although we plan for
this event all year long, it passes quickly once we’re all here. So – make
the most of it, and let’s all take some time to appreciate where we are
and where we’ve been. Our Association, and its past, present, and future,
is special and is something we should all celebrate together.
Here’s to a GREAT week!

Respectfully,
Hank Chisholm, CJF
President, American Farrier’s Association

6 2022 AFA CONVENTION | LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS

FIA President’s Welcome

Great to see everyone at the 2022 AFA Convention! The 51st
Annual Convention is shaping up to be a great week. In my
opinion, this is the farrier’s NFR and Farrier Christmas. There will
be plenty of competition, some of the best competitors in our
industry today. If you spend time watching them, you are sure
to get some new ideas on how to forge and shoe the horses you
work on each day. There will be plenty of demonstrations on how
to do different techniques, new products for the old tried and true
farriers and the ones just getting started.
When the FIA MarketPlace opens, you will find a great place to
do your Christmas shopping, find new tools, products to try out
and plenty of time to talk to the business owners to learn how to
use new tools. The MarketPlace is a great place to meet up with
old friends and make new ones. Take advantage of the evening
festivities or go for a walk in downtown Little Rock to explore the
many restaurants available near the hotel.
As you are talking to fellow farriers and sharing your knowledge,
we as the FIA ask for your input on how to continue to develop
the MarketPlace- what new ideas do you have for how we can
continue to improve the trade fair, should we rename it and what
are your thoughts on a new tag line for the event?
Enjoy the week and please stop by the Texas Farrier Supply booths
and say “hello!”
Chuck Milne
Texas Farrier Supply
President, Farrier Industry Association

AHA Chapter President’s Letter

On behalf of the Arkansas Horseshoers Association, I welcome you to
the great city of Little Rock.
As the host for the 51st annual AFA Convention, our association
is privileged to have you as guests in Arkansas. When I say “our
association”, I really mean all of us. We are extremely excited to get
to be a part of this event. This Convention is an excellent opportunity
to increase our skills and network with other amazing hoof care
professionals from around the country.
There are several places to eat and explore in the downtown district
while you are here. Arkansas has a lot to offer, and we are honored to
be able to showcase this great state to you.
If you need anything during your time at the convention, please do
not hesitate to ask myself or any of our members for assistance. We
would be happy to help.

Thank you all,

Thank You to Our Volunteers

OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE SIMPLY EXCEPTIONAL Members of the 2022
There are an unbelievable number of volunteers that help us pull off this Convention Coordinating
very special week, and without them, we simply could not do what we do. Committee
Our staff is amazing, and they work hard all year long, but an event of this
magnitude – from the National Forging & Horseshoeing Competition to CHAIRMAN
incredible lectures, and Certification opportunities to the FIA MarketPlace Phillip Box, CJF
– requires an inordinate amount of hard work from our leadership, our RULES COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
committees, and our member volunteers. And we should all be thankful Justin Fry, CJF
that they share their time, talent and treasure with us, as they allow us to FIA MARKETPLACE CHAIR
have an incredibly inspirational and enjoyable week together every year. Emily Bull
Led by our Convention Coordinating Committee Chairman, Phillip Box, CJF, MEMBERS
our volunteers spend so many hours choosing renowned speakers that Pat Burton, CJF
will educate all of us and putting together a daily schedule that’s both Melanie Fransen (AFA/FIA Administration)
engaging and fun! Our Rules Committee, led by Justin Fry, CJF, works Martha Jones (AFA/FIA Executive Director)
hard to put together our National Forging & Horseshoeing Competition HOST CHAPTER
that continues to draw some of the best competitors and judges in the Arkansas Horseshoeing Association
nation. Craig Stark, CJF, our Certification Committee Chairman, alongside
his committee of Examiners, plan and offer a myriad of opportunities Committee Contributors
that allow both our certification candidates and those pursuing higher
education to achieve their goals. Pre-Certification Chairman, Lucas ACHIEVEMENT COMMITTEE
Gilleland, CJF, and his Certification Instructors work hard to produce Tim Koelln, CJF (Chairman)
hands-on demonstration stations and written workshops that allow AMERICAN FARRIERS TEAM
candidates to better prepare themselves during their certification Travis Smith, CJF (Team Manager)
journey. Essentially, whatever your goals are while onsite during CERTIFICATION COMMITTEE
Convention, our volunteers have made it happen. Craig Stark, CJF (Chairman)
And of course, our lectures go off without a hitch due to the substantial COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE
time and energy Tom Trosin, CJF and Lee Olsen, CJF put into preparation Heather Beauchemin, CJF, TE (Chair)
and planning ahead of time, and we are thankful for their many years of HISTORICAL & MEMORIAL COUNCIL
commitment and dedication to making our lecture hall experience the Eric Nygaard, CJF (Chairman)
best in the country. NOMINATIONS & ELECTIONS COMMITTEE
But beyond those individuals, there are many, many more who work Don Gustafson, CJF (Chairman)
tirelessly to ensure our Annual Convention is a success. From setting up PRE-CERTIFICATION COMMITTEE
the competition floor to planning and helping during the Grand Finale, Lucas Gilleland, CJF (Chairman)
and from coordinating our Achievement Awards to helping stuff attendee RULES COMMITTEE
bags, you’ll see volunteers everywhere dedicating their time to help all Justin Fry, CJF (Chairman)
of us have an exceptional week. This is noticed, and appreciated beyond
measure, and it is our hope you will take a moment to thank them for
what they do.
And of course, each year the AFA Host Chapter provides the local flavor
and assistance to help us enjoy a tremendous week. This year the
Arkansas Horseshoeing Association, led by liaison, James Butcher, has
stepped up to the plate for us once again, and we are grateful for their
efforts in providing all of the ‘extras’ that we need (and maybe didn’t even
know we needed!) to make our Convention run seamlessly.
To all of you who help both behind the scenes and in front of the scenes –
thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are simply exceptional.

INTRODUCTION
This year the American Farrier’s Association is introducing roundtable sessions.  Roundtable sessions are participant driven
discussions. Moderators will be present to introduce the topic, stimulate conversation, and assure that polite constructive
discussions are being maintained. All participants are encouraged to add to the discussion when they can. Please join us to
share your thoughts and take the time to learn from your peers in these exciting discussions. Each topic will go for about 50
minutes and will be held twice so you will have a chance to get to both.

2022 AFA Convention Speakers

Roy Bloom, CJF ROY BLOOM, CJF
Roy’s journey began in 1971, working for Rick Kreis. Rick encouraged Roy to go to North
CONVENTION SPEAKERS Texas Horseshoeing Institute, which he did and then graduated in May of 1973. Roy shod
for many years before finding the AFA in 1984. He completed his Basic Certification in 1985
and Journeyman Certification in 1986. In 1989, Roy was the alternate on the American
Farriers Team, then a Team member in 1990 and then he held a spot on the Silver Team in
2001. Earning a position on the Team changed everything for Roy. In 2002 Roy became the
Team Manager for the American Farriers Team and held that position until 2009.
In 2001, Roy was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award. Roy has presented at the
AFA Convention twice; Lexington, KY in 1994 and Rochester, NY in 1998, and judged
the National Forging & Horseshoeing Competition twice; Albuquerque, NM in 1997
and Lexington, KY in 2010. In 2004, Roy was honored to be invited to Australia to judge
the Australian Nationals in Perth. While in Australia, he traveled to 4 other provinces
giving clinics in each one. In 2007, Roy was honored to judge the World Championship
Blacksmith Competition at the Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Alberta. Roy has also been
honored to have judged 5 times for the WCB, including the World Horseshoeing Classic in
2011. Roy was inducted into the Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in 2001. Roy has given clinics
and classes in 40 states, 4 Canadian Providences and Australia. This journey has helped Roy
produce a great many articles for numerous trade magazines, and along with Dave Farley,
he has produced a number of instructional videos. In 2010 he was asked to be part of the
newly formed AAPF, and so his journey continues.
Topic: Every Day Basics for the Every Day Farrier
Roy is renowned for his creative yet simplistic approach to everyday basics. FUNdamentals
that you can put into your practice right away.

Ben Casserly, DWCF BEN CASSERLY, DWCF
Chad Chance, CJF Ben started shoeing horses at 16 years old, and was taught by his father, Andrew Casserly.
Andrew has built a very successful shoeing business, which Ben and his brother, Jack,
now run. The Casserlys have achieved success as a family and have competed as a team.
They have won competitions in the UK and have had some positive results at their favorite
competition of the year, the World Horseshoeing Classic in Lexington, KY.
Individually, Ben has competed on the England Farriery Team and won the National
Championship in 2015. Shoeing and shoeing competitions are Ben’s passion, but they
don’t come close to spending time with his wife, Becca, and daughter Darcy.
Ben says, “I am incredibly honored to be asked, and I’m looking forward to judging the
2022 AFA Convention”.
Topic: Discussing the Pros and Cons of Concave
Making every day shoeing a little easier using Concave.

CHAD CHANCE, CJF
Chad graduated from Oklahoma Horseshoeing school in 1984, before going on to earn
a master’s degree from Texas Tech University and furthering his education by becoming
a Certified Journeyman Farrier.  Chad is an active member of the American Farrier’s
Association, the Texas Professional Farriers Association, and the World Championship
Blacksmiths.
Chad’s journey as a farrier began by working alongside north Texas farrier, Danny
Anderson.  From there he continued his education by working with, and learning from,
many different farriers.  Chad has lived and worked in the north Texas area for the last
three decades, where he has had the opportunity to shoe many AQHA, Congress and
World Champions.  Chad has also shod open and amateur champions in the APHA, NCHA,
NRHA, AHA, APPHA and APRHA.  In 2003, he shod the National Reining Horse Association
Futurity Champion.
Chad currently shoes a wide variety of horses.  He was a member of the American Farriers
Team in 2015 and 2016, and a 2018 World Championship Blacksmiths Team member. Chad
states that, “Working through the process of earning my CJF and becoming an active
competitor shaped my farrier business and changed my life.”  Having to get outside of
his own box and allowing other people to judge his work has helped Chad realize that
you can never stop learning and developing your skills as a farrier.  Chad looks forward to
meeting and sharing with you what he has learned over the years.

28 2022 AFA CONVENTION | LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS

hear how! 29

NIGEL FENNELL, CJF, DWCF, AWCF
Nigel has 32 years of farriery experience and holds both Diplomacy & Associateship
examinations of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. As a dedicated competitor, Nigel
has 25 years of contest experience in the UK and abroad. His highlights include National

(2013, 2014). In 2016 and 2017, Nigel won the coveted title of the World Horseshoeing
Team Classic with his fellow legendary teammates Steven Beane, Darren Bazin and Derek
Gardner. Nigel won the Alberta Farriery Championships in Canada in 2019 and won a
straight heat WCB Match Play title in 2017.
Nigel has worked alongside some of the finest farriers in the world, all of which have
influenced his work at home in practice & competition. For 12 years, he has been an
appointed and approved judge by the Worshipful Company of Farriers. From 2012 until
2018, Nigel was the England Farrier Team coach and manager. He has been, and continues
to be, a clinician and judge, passing along his experience of shoeing and competing. Nigel
has given clinics in the US, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Austria, Denmark, Sweden,
Italy, and Germany.
Recently, Nigel found a new passion for full size steel equine sculptures. His last most
notable accomplishment was a full-size steel mosaic of Secretariat. Nigel and his wife,
Susie, now live in Irvine, Kentucky and provide unique postgraduate farrier educational
1,2- and 3-day courses at their facility, Foremans Forge.
Topic: Rock ‘n Roll: Forging Using Various Breakover Designs & Modifications
Shoe modifications aimed at all levels with key basic but effective skills for both everyday
applications and higher-level examinations.

CODY GREGORY, CJF, AWCF
A fixture at the shop since he could walk, Cody is now an instructor at the Heartland
Horseshoeing School. Cody trimmed his first pony and made his first shoe when he was 4
and shod his first horse all around on his own when he was 8.
As a small child, Cody began working toward his goal of being the youngest American
Farrier’s Association Certified Farrier, which he reached at 14. Not complacent with that
mark, Cody passed the American Farrier’s Association Certified Journeyman Farrier exam
at 15, shattering the previous record for the youngest to reach that mark.
In 2009, at the age of 17, Cody received a Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers.
He also achieved the amazing accomplishment of earning the Associateship of the
Worshipful Company of Farriers exam at the age of 19.
Winning his first buckle in a farrier competition at the age of 6, Cody has since competed
all over the US and in several international competitions. He was the first alternate on the
American Farriers Team in 2012, where he won first at the Internationals alternate class
at Stoneleigh. In 2013, 2014, and 2015 he earned a spot on the World Championship
Blacksmiths Team and was the WCB National Champion in 2015. He was also the top
placing American in Calgary at the World Champion Blacksmith Competition in 2013 and
has won the Capewell North American Challenge Cup at the American Farrier’s Association
National Forging and Horseshoeing Competition.
Cody gave his first clinic for the Iowa Farriers Association in 2008. Since then, he has
been added as a clinician for Mustad USA. Cody worked as an AFA Examiner for the first
certification held for the Association of Brazilian Farriers. He was a judge for the South
African Farriers Association national contest in 2008. Cody has served as a Tester for the

AFA 2022 Convention Speakers

CONVENTION SPEAKERS American Farrier’s Association and has helped many people achieve their certification
goals.
Tim Hoover, CJF Cody has written for the American Farriers Journal and has had his photography appear
in the magazine. He even had one of his photos appear as the cover art for the American
Jennifer Horn, CJF Farriers Journal. When his dad wrote Gregory’s Textbook of Farriery, Cody helped by doing
many of the anatomical drawings that appear in the book.
30 Cody provides keen insight that young shoers find easy to relate to and learn from. Former
students have commented how Cody’s input has accelerated their understanding of farrier
theory. His experiences from a young age put him in a rare situation of being able to see
things in shoeing that escape many others.
2013 marked his marriage to fellow farrier, Kirsty Ryzak, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
They live on their farm in Missouri where they raise some cows and teach at Heartland
Horseshoeing School. In his free time, Cody enjoys spending time at horseshoeing
competitions, working on his farm, and traveling to teach farriery.
Topic: For the Want of Anatomy
This lecture will uncover the mechanics hidden by the skin. These mechanics, when
studied, bring a new passion for something that is seen daily. Cody will go over things, from
the expansion of the foot to the suspension of the back, of this amazing animal that always
has something new to teach us!

TIM HOOVER, CJF
Tim Hoover began his horseshoeing career by helping his uncle at a very young age.  When
he got older, he shod part-time for 10 years while working as an ironworker, pipe fitter,
and pipe welder.  Tim achieved his CF in 1992 and began shoeing full time in 1994.  In
1998, he achieved his CJF, and he was awarded the best practical score for that year.  Tim
has successfully competed in many farrier contests winning the WCB Striker of the Year in
2010. Tim currently runs a successful farrier business shoeing a wide variety of horses while
having an eye for efficiency.  His goal is to have a good healthy hoof and happy customers.
With a wealth of knowledge, Tim enjoys sharing what he knows and having fun with
anyone who wants to learn. Tim lives in Emmet, Arkansas with his wife, Wendy, of 36 years.
They have two children and seven grandchildren.
Topic: Bar Shoe Basics with Hooter
Join Hooter as he walks through his process of forging and fitting bar shoes in a live
demonstration.

JENNIFER HORN, CJF
Jennifer Horn is a Certified Journeyman Farrier and Artistic Blacksmith. She attended the
Wolverine Farrier School under the tutelage of International Hall of Fame member, Robert
Reaume. In addition to her career as a farrier, she also is a creative Artist-Blacksmith. The
skills she has employed in her farrier business have allowed her to branch into the artistic
blacksmith world where she enjoys working with hot steel to create fun, beautiful and
functional works. Her blacksmith experiences have continued to develop and improve her
work in return. She operates Daisy Hill Forge in Sault Ste. Marie.
She is an active member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Horseshoers Association.
She also serves in many ways and other aspects of the farrier industry. She is a huge
supporter of the AFA Certification and farrier competitions, large and small! She is a
member and regular demonstrator for the Michigan Artist Blacksmith Association as well
as many other artist blacksmith groups including the Artist Blacksmith Association of North
America. Jennifer demonstrated for ABANA in 2018 under the Farrier’s Tent, sponsored by
FPD. In 2019, she taught several workshops and demonstrated for multiple groups around
the country. She loves learning, and continuing her education is important to further her
skills. She attends several classes and workshops annually herself. She has a long list of both
farrier and blacksmith mentors to thank, yet Clay Spencer is one of her biggest mentors,
and she loves learning about Francis Whitaker.
She is the mother of two wonderful boys, Brian and Jonathan. She enjoys the outdoors,
riding horses and her motorcycle. She loves to travel North America and abroad, meeting
new friends and seeing old ones too! And she loves to swing a hammer!!
Topic: Prepare to Perform: Points to Perfect Your Presentation
This presentation is about presentations and is designed to provide tips and tools
for making AFA Endorsement presentations or preparing to present for a group as a
guest speaker. It will cover gathering your information; assembling a demonstration,

2022 AFA CONVENTION | LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS

PowerPoint, or lecture; and then performing the presentation. Making presentations can be John McNerney, CJF CONVENTION SPEAKERS
challenging; get to this presentation to learn how to overcome the difficulties!  Lydia Mudd, CF, DVM

JOHN MCNERNEY, CJF Katie Panos, CJF
In 1997, John entered farrier school at Colorado State University.  He graduated in late
summer of 1998 and earned his Certified Journeyman Farrier certification. John now 31
resides in Milliken, Colorado with his wife and three kids. John has been married to the love
of his life, Megan, for 23 years. The pair are raising their boys, Wyatt, Samuel, and Cody, on
their small farm.  John started his business, Yukon Forge, after finishing farrier school and
has made farrier tools, shod ponies, commissioned blacksmith jobs and signs, amongst
many other items.  John’s farrier practice has mostly been in the three-day event and
dressage horse world.  Today, John maintains a small part time farrier practice in northern
Colorado.
John began his competition career during farrier school.  He competed in local contests
and became a member of the Rocky Mountain Farriers Association.  John has been
fortunate enough to have competed all over the US, Canada, Scotland, and England. He
was an American Farriers Team member for multiple years, competing on the team first as
an alternate, then later as a full member.  John has been blessed to have had some great
successes in his years of competing.   During and after his time on the American Farriers
Team he had the opportunity to give clinics and judge all over the US and Canada.
John named his business, Yukon Forge, after a nickname given to him by Mr. Jim Quick,
who he apprenticed under for many years.  As a military brat, John grew up in Fairbanks,
Alaska. Yukon Forge began with a focus on forging tools and farrier knives.  It soon
expanded into commissioned blacksmithing projects, fabrication, machining, and sign
making.  The last couple of years, John has been focused on custom knife making and
has had the opportunity to compete and represent farriers on the show, Forged In Fire, a
couple times.
Today, John is honored to Judge the AFA’s 2022 National Forging & Horseshoeing
Competition. John says, “I can’t wait to see the work done by the industry’s best, in one of
the best competitions in the world.”
Topic: 10 Things that Take NO Talent
The “10 Things that Don’t Take Any Talent” is a leadership class I took a few years ago.  This
was a very inspirational lecture to me, and I would like to pass it on to my farrier family.  I
will shape the lecture into how each of us can use these principles to be a leader in the
industry and community as a farrier.  It will be a PowerPoint lecture while I forge a shoe.

LYDIA MUDD, CF, DVM
Dr Lydia Mudd’s interest in podiatry was sparked while completing an equine field service
internship at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and spending time with
the hospital’s equine podiatry service. After two years at the university, she moved home
to the Midwest and has continued to learn thanks to the mentorship of the local farrier
community. She tries to give back to the farrier profession by serving on the Board of
Directors of the Indiana Farriers Association, hosting monthly vet-farrier round table
discussions, and being part of the AFA Therapeutic Endorsement examination panel. She
currently works at Janssen Veterinary Clinic, located just north of Indianapolis, where the
busy sport horse caseload allows her opportunity to further her passions for podiatry and
continuing education.  She is co-recipient of the 2021 AFA Research Grant and in October
2021 became an AFA Certified Farrier.
Topic: Diagnostic Imaging for Farriers: Radiographs and Beyond
Radiographs have become heavily integrated into the farrier world, but as diagnostic
imaging advances beyond x-rays, an understanding of new technology will become
increasingly helpful for the practicing farrier. But what really is the difference between a
bone scan and a PET scan? The goal of this presentation is to provide attendees with clear
explanations to build a basic working knowledge of current imaging modalities, from
radiographs to MRI and beyond!

KATIE PANOS, CJF
Katie Panos, BS, CJF has been around horses for over 20 years. She started her working life
in science, earning her bachelor’s degree in general biology followed by a job at Boston
Children’s Hospital. At Boston Children’s she was trained in all aspects of science and went

CONVENTION SPEAKERS Dr. Sammy Pittman, CF, DVM on to start a PhD program in translational medicine at Michigan State. She went to farrier
Doug Russo, CJF, AWCF school at Oklahoma Farrier School in 2014, starting out concurrently with her graduate
Tim Shannon, CJF, AWCF school studies. Ultimately, farriery won out and she quit her grad program. Since then,
she has been blessed to work with several great farrier hands leading to her CJF in 2019.
She and Doug Russo helped shape the current research committee’s grants program and
journal club options and she is thrilled with the progress and results of both.
Topic: Does Hind-End Soundness Improve when Shod?
Katie will discuss how her group found that horse’s hind limb gait quality improves with
shoes using two different lameness methods.

DR. SAMMY PITTMAN, CF, DVM
Dr. Pittman grew up in a ranching/farming community, having his first experience shoeing
horses at the age of 15. Throughout college and veterinary school, he continued to shoe
horses and spend summers in the Sierra Mountains of California shoeing pack horses.
After graduation in 2003, he met his mentor Dr. Ric Redden, of the International Equine
Podiatry Center, reigniting his interest in equine hoof pathology. In 2010 he and his wife,
Kellee, opened Innovative Equine Podiatry and Veterinary Services, LLC (IEPVS) in Tulsa, OK.
In 2015, the practice moved to Collinsville, TX. IEPVS is one of the few podiatry exclusive
veterinary practices in the United States. Dr. Pittman, Kellee and their daughter, Mesa, and
son, Ridge, all enjoy the intimate relationship created with clients and their horses.
Topic: Understanding the Spectrum of Biomechanics in Our Daily Practice from Low
Heel to Club Foot.
This lecture will dig into the anatomy and mechanics of the crushed heel/low foot and club
foot.  Example based discussion of how these hoof profiles exist and management from
foal to adult horses.

DOUG RUSSO, CJF, AWCF
Doug shod his first horse as a ranch hand nearly 30 years ago and the result looked a lot
like a train wreck on steroids. It was many years later that he pursued farriery as a career
through an apprenticeship with Richard Becker, CJF.
He served as president of the Michigan Horseshoers Association (MHA) as well as several
years on the MHA board of directors. He is a past board member of the American Farrier’s
Association, current approved Certification Instructor, AFA Examiner, President of the
American Farrier’s Association Foundation and Chairman of the AFA’s research committee.
He is an AFA Certified Journeyman Farrier as well as an Associate of the Worshipful
Company of Farriers. Doug has spent the last 8 years at Iowa State University’s College of
Veterinary Medicine’s large animal hospital. He works closely with ISU’s equine surgery
team in the treatment of lameness. He co-teaches a ½ semester lameness course for 3rd
year vet students and teaches a 2-week clinical rotation for 4th year vet students.
Topic: Static Versus Dynamic Balance
There has long been an argument within the industry - do we shoe horses to stand, or do
we shoe horses to move? I believe most farriers agree, horses sustain acute or repetitive
strain injury while moving. Based on my experience, I hypothesize that radiographs are not
appropriate for determining balance. I look forward to explaining my theory as well as how
we might determine dynamic balance.

TIM SHANNON, CJF, AWCF
Tim is a full-time farrier from Southern California, in practice since 1987. His practice
consists mostly of FEI Eventing and Endurance horses, with his clients having competed
across the US, Europe and the Middle East. As a clinician and a speaker, Tim has written
articles for multiple trade publications. Tim has competed in the Farrier Institute of
Dundlod, India. He received a Graduate Diploma of Equine Locomotor Research through
the Royal Veterinary College of London in 2020. Tim is committed to continuing education
and fostering productive relationships between equine practitioners for the benefit of the
horse.
Topic: What Defines the Modern Professional Farrier
There is an abundance of educational opportunities, tools, research, and modern materials
available to a farrier today. So how, then, do we define today’s professional farrier? I will be
going over the skills needed to be a professional farrier today, and why they are important
to today’s practitioner.

TRACY A. TURNER, DVM, MS, DIPL.ACVS, DIPL.ACVSMR Tracy A. Turner, DVM, MS, CONVENTION SPEAKERS
Tracy Turner began his professional career as a farrier and used those skills to help finance Dipl.ACVS, Dipl.ACVSMR
his education. He received his DVM degree from Colorado State University in 1978. He
served on the faculty of the Universities of Illinois, Florida, and Minnesota. At Minnesota, Andrew Wells, CJF
he was Head of Large Animal Surgery and attained the rank of full Professor before
leaving academics to join Anoka Equine Clinic in 2004. In 2016, he started his own practice 33
dedicated to Sports Medicine and Surgery.
Turner’s primary research efforts have focused on equine lameness with particular
interest in equine podiatry, back issues in horses, rehabilitation, and thermography. His
podiatry research has evaluated the radiographic and morphologic characteristics of
hoof imbalance, as well as the differential diagnosis of palmar foot pain (PFP) and the
development of PFP treatment strategies. He pioneered the use of thermography as a
diagnostic aid in lameness evaluation, as well as its use in horse welfare regulation. Turner
has extensively published on these topics and been invited to lecture nationally and
internationally. In 2004, Turner was inducted into the International Equine Veterinarian’s
Hall of Fame.
Turner is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, a Diplomate of the
American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a Fellow of the American
Academy of Thermology (AAT). He is an active member of the AVMA, AAEP, AAT and the
American Horse Council. Turner has served as chairman of the AAEP’s Farrier Liaison
Committee, served on the AAEP Foundation Advisory Council, the AAEP Educational
Programs Committee and the AAEP Board of Directors. He has consulted for United
States Equestrian Federation, the USDA Horse Protection and Federation Equestrienne
Internationale (FEI). He is married to veterinarian Julia Wilson and has two sons. He loves
the outdoors and rides whenever possible.
Topic: What Imaging Tells Us About the Horse’s Foot
This is a comprehensive discussion of the imaging modalities used to examine the equine
foot. The discussion details the need for an accurate diagnosis and therefore, accurate
imaging. Discussions follow on the difference between film radiography and digital
radiography. This is followed by a discussion of using ultrasound to examine the foot,
followed by discussing the added value that scintigraphy and thermography bring to
imaging the foot. Finally, a discussion of magnetic resonance imaging and how that has
changed how we look at the foot.

ANDREW WELLS, CJF
Andrew graduated from Samford University in 2008 and the University of Iowa in 2010.
He first learned about shoeing horses in 2010 as a dude wrangler in Colorado. In 2011,
he attended shoeing school at Five Star Horseshoeing School in Minco, OK. Andrew
apprenticed for several great farriers in Colorado and New Mexico before moving to
Alabama in 2015. He was a member of the WCB Category 2 team in 2015, 2nd alternate on
the AFT in 2016, an AFT member in 2017 and a WCB Team member in 2018 and 2019. He
currently resides in Auburn, Alabama and shoes for the Auburn University Equestrian Team
as well as horses for lessons and a variety of disciplines.
Topic: With Great Art to Copy All that He Saw: An Interview with Craig Trnka
Andrew Wells will interview Craig Trnka live on stage in the lecture hall. Topics of
conversation include the beginning of Craig’s career, his first experiences traveling
abroad to compete, and making a transition from being in competitions to producing
competitions. Beyond question and answer, there is sure to be storytelling along the path
to discovering Craig’s thoughts on making a life as a farrier.

AFA RESEARCH RAPID FIRE
AFA Equine Research grant recipients, Cody Bogard, CJF, TE, Scott Bushaw, CJF and Brian
Strelow, CJF will give attendees an overview of, and update on, their current research
projects. Cody is studying how various variables effect pour in pad hardness over a six-
week time period, Scott is studying the effects of bacterial load and moisture content
with copper sulfate under a pad versus not, and Brian is studying the measurements of
radiographs taken with limbs “evenly” loaded versus fully loaded. These summaries will
provide you insight on our grantees’ progress, as well as what you can expect when they
are complete!

Competition Judges 2022 COMPETITION

Ben Casserly, DWCF

Ben started shoeing horses at 16 years old, and was taught by his father, Andrew Casserly.

John McNerney, CJF

In 1997, John entered farrier school at Colorado State University.  He graduated in late
summer of 1998 and earned his Certified Journeyman Farrier certification. John now
resides in Milliken, Colorado with his wife and three kids.
