work just fine if placement and general size are correct. Make
closeup diagrams for things like carpal/tarsal bones, sesamoid
ligaments, and hoof wall-bone junction. After a few of these,
try doing the whole diagram from memory alone and see how
well you do. Reference the textbook and correct any mistakes.
With enough repetition, you will find yourself making fewer
and fewer corrections. Every time it becomes easier, add more
details or layers.

Explaining: 5 – 20 mins. per session Explain topics while driving to appointments
Describing limb anatomy or how a specific disease works to
someone who has no horse experience is a great next step
to practice what you have been learning. Significant others
and family members can be good options, but talking directly
to someone may be uncomfortable when you don’t yet feel
confident in your knowledge. It turns out, the steering wheel
of your truck is a great listener. It doesn’t judge or correct you,
and it has nowhere else to be. In addition, rather than having
to carve out specific time before or after work to practice you
can utilize time that would normally only be used for driving.
Once again, start with the basics. Describe the bones in the
forelimb, or the main tendons and where they are located. Use
the textbook and diagrams (when not driving) to check facts.
As you become more comfortable talking, start adding more
details and delving into more complex subjects.

Quizzing: 20 – 45 mins. per session Draw and label
Taking practice quizzes or using flashcards will normalize Practice quiz
expressing the information that you know in a test-like
format. You can create your own questions and flashcards the
traditional way on paper, or utilize an online format like Quizlet
or Flexiquiz. Materials made by someone else are a great option
to consider as questions will be written and presented in ways
you may not have seen before, just like you will experience with
the real exam. EducatedFarrier.com is a great resource for this
and has an entire pre certification section, with practice quizzes
and lectures for all major units of the test. Whichever method
you choose, run through the first time without checking
answers and see how you do. Review the material after, and
again before the next time you attempt.
As previously mentioned, these study methods are all very
useful by themselves but are exponentially better when
combined and repeated. A typical “study day” might look
something like this:
• Explain 2 – 3 topics while driving to appointments
• Skim textbook section after work to check explanations
• Draw and label forelimb bones, add and label tendons + check
ligaments on top of bones
• Do 1-2 practice quizzes

CLINICPRTEH-ECVEALRUTEIOFFITCHAETAIFOA N
By Julia Lundeen, CF

All across America before AFA certifications, pre-certification
clinics are organized by the AFA to help candidates prepare for
the trials ahead of them. Each clinic is its own, having a different
set of instructors with their own unique skills and knowledge.
Of course, all pre-certification clinics are not equal, but they are
created with the interests of the candidates in mind. The clinics
happen well before the upcoming certification in the area, which
gives the candidates just enough time to go forth and finish their
preparations. I had the opportunity to attend the pre-certification
clinic in Minnesota this August, and I am happy to share why
I think that event was so helpful in preparing candidates for
the exam. The two clinicians were Justin Frank, CJF, and Mark
Thorkildson, CJF, AWCF, both of whom are Certification Instructors
and Examiners.
The primary takeaway I got from the pre-certification clinic
was knowing what to expect at the certification event. This was
accomplished by the instructors reviewing the certification guide
comprehensively, with room for the clinicians to interject their
thoughts and observations. Attendees asked questions about
everything from the proper study materials to interpretations of
the wordings within the guide. It provided a more thorough and
easy-to-understand explanation of how things go at certification,
and helped the candidates know what certification looked like

from the Testers’ perspectives - a very helpful way to remove
the mystery that surrounded the event. There was also an
element of study help in that portion of the clinic, where the
clinicians discussed the concepts that are included in the
written exam, approximately how each section of the exam
was weighted, test-taking strategies, and topics that tend to
cause candidates problems or are frequently overlooked while
studying (such as the phases of the gaits).
There were also a few useful demos that both directly and
indirectly helped with certification. The beauty of those
demos was that there were several useful tips that one could
also easily apply to their daily work, and not just passing
certification.
One such demo was helpful for the CF shoe board, the CJF
barshoe, and also had plenty of lessons that could be used in
the field. Justin Frank showed us all how to “play the numbers”
and pass the barshoe by aiming for a score of 7 in every
category. He cut the wrong amount of steel to begin with,
and then made more intentional mistakes, but he still kept his
eye on that score of 7 in each category and made a passing
shoe. We also learned from Mark Thorkildson how to sharpen
knives by removing the bulge in the middle of the blade. This
was useful not only for tool maintenance purposes and having

2022 AFA CONVENTION | LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS 69

better knives on a daily basis, but also for improving our
trimming efficiency during the exam. We similarly saw demos
on some difficult shoe modifications, how to tune up our
punches, and the types of steel we use as farriers.
A major portion of the clinic involved a live shoeing, where
one instructor shod a foot to a CF standard, and the other
shod a foot to a CJF standard. Along the way, there were
many learning opportunities. Plenty of questions were asked
about time management, the biggest problems that first-
time test-takers face, where to draw the line with your work
and move on, and so forth. It was super useful to see one foot
that was shod to just barely pass the nailing/finishing section
of the CF practical test, and then redone in a way that would
achieve a higher score. Little tips and tricks like that can add
up when you’re getting ready to do your run at certification.

“The primary takeaway I got from the
pre-certification clinic was knowing
what to expect at the certification

event.”

However, it wasn’t just the nitty-gritty details that made
the event worth attending. Even more importantly, we
got to meet other people who were on the road towards
certification. Every person in the room had some sort of
interest in certification, continued education, and sharing
knowledge. Those of us who went to the pre-cert clinic and
then the certification a month later had an extra layer of
support and accountability around us, too. When we showed
up to the certification, we were all following up on what
we started a month ago, and had worked to improve since
the last time we worked together. I know it gave me a huge
morale boost, knowing that there were a bunch of people
there who were trying to achieve something meaningful
together, and all at the same time. But even before the
certification, when I was driving home from the clinic, I had
that extra motivation to get myself ready and not let those
guys down on the big day. Farriers don’t get to work as a
team very often, but through that clinic we were a team,
trying to help each other to better ourselves. It was quite
inspiring.
I had a great experience at the pre-certification clinic, and
would definitely say that everyone who attends will learn
something at the event. It is by far the most useful way
to prepare for certification, and it’s a load of fun, as well.
Between the great instruction on how to be a better shoer,
and the motivation that comes from working alongside other
farriers who are trying to learn and improve, I left with more
passion for my work and a higher standard for the quality
of work I produce daily. The connections you make at these
clinics help you stay on track to get certified, get more advice
on questions you have while you’re working or prepping for
the exam, and feel more connected to the wide network of
farriers out there. I cannot recommend it enough.

Xavier
The following case was presented at the 2021 AFA Convention as a portion of the Therapeutic Endorsement exam.

By: Cody Bogard, CJF, TE 73

Xavier, a 14-year-old Norwegian Fjord gelding, was bought
back in August after having been sold 8 years previously. The
horse was shipped to Indiana from Washington state sight
unseen and without a prepurchase exam. Upon arrival the
horse was lame on the left front (LF). The owner had a lameness
exam performed and radiographs of the front hooves taken.
The initial radiographs revealed mineralization in the stratum
medium of the LF, indicative of what is commonly known
as white line disease (WLD). The toe of the LF was partially
debrided by the veterinarian, confirming the diagnosis. An
appointment was set for the horse to be hauled to the clinic for
a joint appointment with myself and a veterinarian specializing
in podiatry.
Written about in 1884 by Lungwitz, though called hollow wall at
the time, the pathology commonly known as white line disease
(WLD) has gone by many names through the centuries such
as seedy toe, hollow hoof, and onychomycosis. As this disease
does not actually affect the white line but rather the zona alba
of the stratum medium, white line disease is a misleading and
incorrect term. Keratolysis, or more accurately keratolysis of the
zona alba or keratolytic disease of the zona alba (KDZA) would
be far more appropriate names.
While Lungwitz was not sure of the cause at the time he wrote,
we know now that keratolysis of the zona alba is an infection
caused by a combination of fungi and anaerobic bacteria that
attack and digest the unpigmented portion of the stratum
medium known as the zona alba.
Keratolytic disease can be separated into two types, systemic
and structural. Systemic cases generally involve nutritional
deficiencies and/or environmental issues. These horses
generally have poor quality horn in all feet and may not be
sound without shoes. Structural cases are due to some type of
mechanical defect in the foot such as a separation caused by
imbalance, a flare, or a crack.

2022 AFA CONVENTION | LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS

While the systemic type can be more difficult to treat,
structural keratolytic disease can be treated by removal of
affected tissue and treatment with an antimicrobial such as
strong iodine or copper sulfate. Depending on how much
of the wall is affected, specialized shoeing may be needed
to support and protect the compromised foot.
At the initial appointment the equine was lame on the left
front. The foot was radiographed and the area of infection
debrided. The debridement extended roughly 2/3 of the
way up the hoof wall from quarter to quarter. Once all
infected areas were removed, the area was treated with
a strong iodine and the hoof shod. A glue-on cuff style
shoe was selected with the toe of the cuff removed to not
interfere with the debrided area. After the shoe was on, a
firm pour-in pad was used to provide axial support. The
right front (RF) was found to have no significant areas of
infection.
Upon examining the hinds, the right hind (RH) was found
to have a significant area of infection on the lateral and
dorsal aspects; however, the equine was unwilling to lift
the RH for any length of time. The defect was cleaned and
packed with a mixture of copper sulfate, venice turpentine,
and okam. The hoof was placed in a boot as the left hind
(LH) was of greater concern for the time being. The LH had
a sizable defect from the widest point of the foot forward.
A radiograph of the LH showed a complete separation of
the stratum internum and abaxial portion of the stratum
medium as well as rotation of the distal phalanx due to the
lack of structural integrity of the hoof capsule. This rotation
was not considered to be caused by laminitis as there were
no other symptoms present and this was the only foot
affected.
After debriding the LH, a reverse glue-on cuff shoe was
glued on. The reasoning for the reverse shoe was due
to a lack of choice in glue-on shoes on the day of the
appointment. The shoes that were available on the day
were wide-webbed and would be directly under the solear
margin of P3. A firm pour pad was used in the plantar
portion of the foot while a soft pour was used in the dorsal
portion.
A week after the initial appointment a venogram was
performed on the LH revealing a proximal displacement
of the circumflex artery compared to the distal tip of P3.
At this time Xavier was demonstrating lameness and an
unusual gait in the LH while the original lameness in the LF
had subsided. The reverse shoe was removed from the LH
and an aluminum rocker shoe made from a Morrison shoe
was nailed and glued on. The rocker type shoe was chosen
to relieve stress of the foot during motion and to allow
the horse to stand with his foot rocked forward in a rested
position while still retaining some stability. A firm pour pad
provided axial support while a piece of Play-Dough was
used to unload the area distal to the tip of P3. Due to the
soreness of the LH it was elected to leave the RH in a boot
for an additional week.
The following week the RH was partially resected and
a glue-on cuff style shoe applied with a firm pour pad.
Copper sulfate was packed into the remaining cavities. This

74 2022 AFA CONVENTION | LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS

setup, cuff shoe on LF and RH and rocker style shoe on LH 75
was used for 2 5-week cycles.
Roughly 3 months from the initial appointment 2 concerns
came up. First, the owner was increasingly concerned with
the cost of treatment. Secondly, while the horse was now
sound, though with an unusual gait in the LH, we were not
seeing the progress we wanted with regard to sole depth of
the LH. During this appointment a seroma was found in the
sole under the tip of P3. Rather than resetting this foot it was
bandaged for a few days and then shod with a hospital plate
made from a Sigafoos series 1 shoe with impression material
used as a packing. The other 3 feet were reset the same as
they had been done before as they were progressing well.
The decision was made to make the next appointment for
10 weeks to both save the owner some money and in an
attempt to allow the sole depth to improve before the next
reshoeing. This proved serendipitous as this was the last
week I worked before I was injured with a cut resulting in not
being able to use my hand. The next appointment 10 weeks
later would be the first day I was able to work on my own.
After the 10 weeks in a hospital plate, sole depth had
improved however the quality of sole had not. The sole
of the LH was disorganized compared to a healthy sole,
wanting to flake away and exfoliate very easily. At this time
the LH was placed in a series 1 with a frog support pad,
copper sulfate, venice turpentine and okam were used for
a packing. The RH and LF were glued one last time. By the
next appointment all but the LH were able to have shoes
nailed on. Xavier was reset with nail on shoes on 3 feet and
a glue-on with a frog support pad on the LH multiple times.
13 months after the original appointment the sole of the
LH was healthy and at an acceptable depth. At the time of
writing Xaiver is in a full set of shoes with traditional open
heel shoes on 3 feet and a glue one with frog support pad on
the LH. He is sound and in full work in dressage. Xavier will
continue to be shod in this fashion until the LH has resumed
a normal structure.
