Visual artist, living in Oslo, Norway. My starting point are the colours. I paint intuitively in lay-
ers, scraping off, building structures. Something turns up, speaks to me, and I help it emerge.
Then fantasy takes over and guides me further to the finished painting. To me, this is magic.
I have been painting all my life, but the past twenty years actively. 4 years training at local art
school, plus many courses with renowned artists. Toril S. Kojan is also a trained Art Therapist.

Coming from a fam-

Kagan, PhD. was al-
ways fascinated by the
left and right brain re-
lationship. A holistic
therapist and artist, she’s
been developing her
unique technique and
style in “Healing Arts”
which reflects her own deep view on life, a
desire to bridge realities and heal the Past.
A refugee from Russia, Helen believes that art as
a powerful form of self-expression is a vehicle for
emotional, physical, mental and spiritual well-
being and can enhance healing to those in need.
She believes in mind-body-spirit connection and
her passionate art is a statement of her beliefs.
“...The light as the apex of Helen’s art is so strong
that it reminds us of the sunshine that breaks
through the closed window of our visions and
compels us to finally open it... for self-healing
and self-discovery. “ – Maya Ellenson, PhD.

Artist’s Statement Although my early
training focused on a study of the old
masters, my recent work has become
more abstract. I am exhilarated by the
challenge of evoking ideas in the view-
er from the forms that escape from my
fingers. Just a brushstroke on a canvas
gives me the freedom to do anything I
envision; there are no limits other than
the dimensions of the canvas itself.
I enjoy exploring the canvas, plumb-
ing its depth and dimensions to create
a piece that challenges the intellect,
invites curiosity, and creates pleasure.

That is beautiful which is produced by the inner need, which springs from the soul.
-Wassily Kandinsky.

With a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York and an MFA from the University of Iowa, Bill
Stamats shows his work extensively in the US. Bill sees his work as a continuous flow of
images, shapes, marks, and patterns built from years of creating a visual vocabulary that
resonates with him. It is tied to nature, which is also a continuous visual flow of images,
shapes, marks, and patterns. All the forces and particles of nature are one, just different rip-
ples in the ocean of consciousness. Bill finds that the more tangential the imagery, the more
it becomes metaphorical and open to the viewer’s own interpretation. Ultimately, Bill’s
desire is that the viewer’s interpretation of his artwork relates on a level that connects the
viewer to nature and to a spiritual sensibility that is innate.

Born in the Thetford-Mines area in 1978, Sophie Ouellet has always been interested in visual
arts and creativity. She got her multidisciplinary bachelor’s degree from the Université Laval
in 2005 in order to run creative workshops. The power of creation in one’s personal journey,
as an introspection and expression tool, as a way to express one’s life experiences and to
transform one’s wounds, and as an empowerment tool is what this artist’s calling is all about.
Sophie Ouellet’s medium of choice is acrylic paint, but she will never hesitate to use other
media in her paintings to depict her inner thoughts. Sophie Ouellet’s approach is a very in-
tuitive one, in touch with her inner feelings. She lets material come to life under her hands.
Shapes appear through a touch of randomness, as feelings come and go.

I am completely self taught, but passionate and full of love being busy with it. I really paint
out of my heart and soul and always begin with a clean sheet and mind; let colours, shapes

although I like all kinds of music and begin with my work/passion/hobby with nothing but a
white canvas… My mind is working while I’m busy with my pallet-knives and mixing colours
and making some kind of performance in my own little town (my canvas), never know where
ending, always sudden finishing and
satisfied about the result without some
definitely and immediately explanation,
then I start thinking… Every painting has
a reason to exist and I always find in my
paintings a kind of same structure that
I can recognize as my own kind of style.
It’s always returning in horizontal and
vertical stripes or lines, I think they give
me structure in my busy, and sometimes
chaotic art of living, I should define it
as “meridianism”, a new kind of art be-

emotion and expression as compensa-
tion. An entire city is reduced to a single
piece of iconic architecture, yet through
pictorial pattern, color, and dynamic
composition the atmosphere and person-
ality of the whole is perfectly conveyed.
The trick is Adka’s ability to maintain an
ordered chaos among the competing ele-
ments: she always finds just the right ori-
entation for her tilted ground, the precise
angle at which one three-fingered hand A Loyal Paw
should grasp another, and the threshold acrylic painting
of stylization that prevents a pared-down 18x24 inches
object from becoming unrecognizable. 2013

Born in Antibes in 1956, Jean-Yves
Paugam grew up in Senegal before
moving back to the French Riviera,
where in 1998 opened his own gal-
lery/art studio in the Old Town of
Vence. After many years working
with acrylics and experimenting
with mixed media, he now paints
exclusively with oils. Particularly
aware of environmental degradation,
his pictures depict pollution of the
seas, smog in big cities, unauthor-
ized dumps, and the proliferation of
nuclear plants. Portraits of long-gone
clean-up workers are a logic devel-
opment of his artist statement. Pessi-
mism about our planet’s fate and its
irremediable damages are nonethe-
less aesthetically rendered.

Art is her life, fun, sense of life. She likes to work with any mediums-oil, acrylic, watercolor,
pastel. And she likes to use different styles for each subject. She never entirely knows what a
finished peace will be. When she starts out, she usually has an idea of what she is trying to
represent, but during the process she could get absolutely different picture.

The set of works presented here comes from the art project: BONEHEAD/BORDERLINE, cen-
tering on the body, its relationship with power and the mutations induced by this relationship.
The body is the only venue for experimentation common to all of us, universal and personal.
It is the language when language is dead, it is the tool when power must be destroyed. This

artwork is attached in particular to
the notions of texture and move-
ment through a series of creature
portraits, the development of which
is a survival strategy.

Ambiguity and ambivalence are at the heart of Bresson’s work. In his pictorial approach and
process, all tends to cultivate an uncertainty left to the discretion of the viewer’s eye. His com-
positions also make space for that which is immediately visible: the movement, the painting
as pictorial matter. An archaeology
of colour, Bresson’s work represents
a substrata, a layered fertile ground
from which the weight of the subject
matter is derived by contamination.
François Bresson (1981) lives and
practices in the south-west of France,
Aquitaine. He studied at the École
des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux.

The Zen-aesthetical gaze of his paintings, scanning bodies and the

environment, enables to feel the ‘superluminous darkness’ of reality,

this paradoxical metaphysical texture, which is the constituent ele-

ment of our sensually perceivable world, while also adding something

absolutely supra-sensual, which is simultaneously brightness and

darkness, existence and non-existence. And there is no lust for pow-

er, pansexuality or political economy – the only generative principle

seems to be an absolutely primal fiat, an act without bounds or rules.
