People news By Gareth Costello, Store Manager, Macclesfield

Since November, the Macclesfield store have undergone a complete refit and
have filled 2 floors of mezzanine space along with a new ground floor layout.
Work started on Monday 9th November, which meant the team had to
temporarily relocate nearly 30 customers and vacate over 5,000 sqft of larger
commercial business customers. The refit also included the reception area
and therefore the team had a nice 10 week stay in a portacabin.
Once completed, the works will add approximately 18,000 sqft extra space
that was urgently required given the store have been constantly around
90-95% for nearly 12 months with domestic customers taking multiple rooms
as they had no units available over 50sq ft.
At the time of writing the work is being completed, with only Concept
Cleaning left to visit to deep clean the store and minor bits of snagging left.
The team are amazed at the difference it has made and how good the store
now looks. They believe that it is the largest Armadillo refit the Company has
ever undertaken.
Gareth Costello, Store Manager, took pictures over the 14 week period and has
kindly shared them with us. I think you'll agree that the store looks amazing!

People news On a very cold January day, the Area Managers attended the second part
of their 'Fresh Perspective' programme in Oxfordshire.
When they arrived they were given their challenge - herd 10 very lively
sheep into a pen. Simple you might say!
Well, these sheep had other plans on that day, none of which involved
going into a pen. The Area Managers soon realised this was going to be
a greater challenge than they originally thought. Several hours later,
after trying many different strategies, the team came together and finally
managed to get the final sheep into the pen.
The second part of the day took part in warmer surroundings, consisting
of group discussions within a workshop facilitated by Two Bald Blokes.
Overall another really worthwhile (and fun) day for each member of the
team.

from a customer who didn't want
storage, but who was looking for
ideas and ways to make the
weekend fun for the children.

The customer had a daughter that
loved pretending to be a princess
so he visited the Balham store to
collect some boxes to make a
castle.

At the Hanger Lane store Caroline
Wyszynski and Kritika Sharma go
above and beyond when it comes
to customer service! Duties
recently stretched as far as looking
after a customers' child, who
happily sat colouring in the Big
Yellow colouring book, whilst her
father popped upstairs to his
storage unit.

store. Children love them!

On 9th February, some of Adam Berry's team went out for a chilly night of competitive
golfing at Topgolf in Watford.
Firsttimersinstantlyturnedintoprosandawholelotoflaughswereshared. Although
the conditions weren't ideal, with the skies trying to show us their best efforts at
making it snow, we still had a lot of fun with our frozen Rudolph noses.
Paul Regan from High Wycombe and Ben Gould from Twickenham showed us that
they have a lot more power in them that you would expect with golf balls flying to
the far side of the field and even over the course barriers. This was slightly worrying
as Paul mentioned this was his first time golfing - really?! That said, a few first timers
walked away with medals and even trophies, the Coronas were on tap and everyone
felt like a winner in the end with keepsake goodies to take home.
All in all it was a great night of fun and healthy competition. Looking forward to
visiting again in the warmer months for sure!

Tuesday 7th February, saw Gino Cacioppo's area head back to Team Sport Go Karts in
Edmonton for a third year running with some staff attending for the first time and a few
returning veterans, all keen and eager to reignite the competitive streak!

Pre race entertainment included a Domino's pizza feast at the Edmonton store prior to the 14
brave members taking to the track across 7 teams. All were wanting to compete and see who
could prevail victorious and take the coveted 1st place on the winners podium. The teams
were pre-set and were as follows:

Team 1 - Gino Cacioppo and Mark Randall
Team 2 - Almas Ali and Martin Doyle
Team 3 - Darren Naylor and Mitesh Patel
Team 4 - Mark Woodley and Joe Moxom
Team 5 - Jonny McConnell and Edwin Murwera
Team 6 - Jason Simpson and Robyn Kirk
Team 7 - Kyle Smith and Akos Pantya

Like previous years, a team challenge ensued with the only rule that each member of the team
was to drive once and you could pit as many times as you like, but with the goal to finish the
45 mintues drive, as the team to have completed the most laps. There would also be a silent
battle for each person to set the fastest lap.

It was an enthralling race, with the track still containing an elevated section which would see
the drivers ascend a ramp, race through a few chicanes and then descend back down to a sharp
hairpin whilst at all times trying to navigate and keep that smooth racing line. There were a
few crashes leading to the race stopping whilst drivers were spoken to or have the kart turned
to face the correct way after undercutting and spinning out. Most teams would find the right
line and were getting faster and Kyle even came prepared with this GoPro which Edwin

Each team competed competitively, trying to pull off the fastest lap they could and edge their
team closer to the finishing line by completing the most laps. There was however, always
going to be three teams finishing on the podium, but who would get the coveted 1st place?
Who would finish on the podium and which team would finish in the humiliating last place!?

The chequered flag waved and the race was finished, as teams entered the pits, the results
were being finalised and all gathered by the podium! Finishing last was team Luton (Jonny and
Edwin), albeit due to being unable to carry on 14 laps before the end due to an injury (from a
crash).

In third place, team Watford (Kyle and Akos), team Milton Keynes (Jason and Robyn) and the
winners taking 1st place - team management (Gino and Mark) - congratulations!

Lap time top three winners were:
Akos - 39.132 secs
Mark W - 39.995 secs
Mark R - 40.307 secs

Congratulations to Joe Moxom from the People news
Finchley North store who won Gino's area
Extra Mile Award.
Joe won his Extra Mile Award in recognition of
managing the Finchley East store whilst there
was no team at all in Quarter 3, with great
success. This resulted in a trip to the Shard on
3rd March.
Mark also joined Joe and Gino at the Shard, in
recognition of all his efforts as Area Support
Manager whilst also building his team and
delivering some solid results in his Watford
store.
Well done to you both!

Congratulations to Samantha Denham-Jones from the Barking
store who entered her first Judo competition on 12th March
and won a silver medal in her weight class and a silver medal

Charity news By John Laffey, Edinburgh Store Manager

As some will recall I am passionate about fundraising for good causes and for
the last two years I have been raising funds to further research into Multiple
Sclerosis and other neurological conditions. This is close to my heart as my
sister lives with the challenges of Progressive MS on a daily basis.
I had intended to take a year off but having been 'encouraged' by a friend to
raise more money this year, it is time to inflice some more pain on myself!!
MS doesn't stop and neither does the research. So, deep breath and here I go
again.
2017 will see me take on three Full Marathons including two brand new events
in Brimingham and Stirling, as well as two half Marathons.
There is some incredibly exciting breakthrough studies currently taking place
which will give hope to thousands of people around the UK but this needs
continuous funding. If you would like to make a donation it would be massively

Salvation Army Ilford.

One of the things the charity do is help young
families that are struggling financially with
food parcels, clothes and essential baby
items that they give out at their baby bank
events.

I am taking in collections at the Ilford store
for the below items. If you have any of these
bits left at home or would like to donate
anything then please let me know and I will
arrange collection from your store.

On 24th February, some of Matt Trevillion's area tookCharity news
part in a quiz night to raise £123 for the area charity,
Macmillan.

It was a great success and the team had lots of fun and
lots of pizza.

The quiz ran from 7.30 - 10.30pm and it was a big well
done to Sammy, Dave and Rob who were the winning
team at the end of the night. They all received £30 of
high street vouchers.

Matt also awarded Jabril with £10 for being player of
the night.

Big thanks to Matt for volunteering to be quizmaster
and organizing a new set of questions appropriate for
everyone's knowledge range (although it is reported
that the 11-16 year old quiz questions were still too
difficult for some)!

On 16th December, Mark Price's area held a ChristmasCharity news
jumper day.
Poppy Deakes from the Stoke store, asked each person
to donate £2 for the area charity, Multiple Sclerosis.
The store also managed to get some representatives
from their local MS branch to come in for a photo and a
cup of tea.
Below is a photo of Poppy Deakes and Nina Blackwood
with some members of the MS local branch. They were
also joined by Gary (the one in the snowman jumper)
from Martson & Price, who are the removals company
the store recommends.

Charity news Jeff Banks of Big Yellow Chester &
Chester FC at the Countess of Chester
Hospital

The Big Yellow Chester Christmas Toy Appeal 2016, once again proved a huge success,
in what is the 10th year that the Chester store have run the appeal.
Over £10,000 worth of toys and gifts were donated by the public, sports clubs, schools
and businesses across the area from November onwards, as well as key retailers like
Argos, the Co-Op, Morrisons and Royal Mail all taking part for the first time and helping
to swell the numbers of donations to four local charities.
Cheshire Buddies, Save the Family, Local Solutions and the Babygrow Appeal based at
the Countess of Chester Hospital all benefitted from the donated items, helping to give
under privileged children and families Christmas presents that they may not have had
to open, had it not been for the Toy Appeal run by Big Yellow Chester.
Jeff Banks, Business Development Manager at Big Yellow Chester was delighted with
how the Toy Appeal had turned out, “Once again, the appeal has been a great success
with a phenomenal amount of toys and gifts being donated. The feedback received
from the various charities that have benefitted has been that all of the children and
families loved their gifts and were extremely grateful for them. I know that Big Yellow
has played a vital part in their enjoyment of Christmas, which is something we all tend
to take for granted. Thanks also to the other Big Yellow and Armadillo stores that donated
some toys to the appeal as well, they were very much appreciated.”
Part of the Toy Appeal campaign saw Chester FC take Big Yellow boxes full of toys and
gifts to the Children’s Ward and Neonatal Unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital, and
it’s safe to say all the Santa’s made a great impression on those in the Hospital as they
posed for pictures inside the main reception and also in the Wards themselves.

Charity news BIG YELLOW CHESTER REWARD UPTON HIGH SCHOOL WITH CHESTER FC
VISIT

Big Yellow Chester’s Christmas Toy Appeal raised over £10,000 worth of
gifts for local under privileged and sick children, and staff wanted to reward
one of the largest contributors to the appeal – Upton High School.

Jeff Banks, Business Development Manager at the Chester store arranged
with National League football club Chester FC to provide an impromptu
training session for students at Upton High School.

Chester FC Manager Jon McCarthy and first-team players ran the session,
which helped to develop the skills of the 12 and 13-year-old students from
the school’s Year 8.

Jeff said, “I would like to thank Chester FC and the Community Trust for
agreeing to come along and reward the students for their part in doing so
much for the Toy Appeal. They have been fantastic, so it was great to give
them something back for helping those less fortunate than themselves.”

Jim Green, CEO of the Chester FC Community Trust was delighted to be able
to help facilitate the session, “Upton High School really got behind the Toy
Appeal and we were only too happy to reward their generosity with a
football session and the chance to pick up some tips from our first-team
squad.”

Jon McCarthy, Chester FC Manager ran the session for the youngsters along
with first-team players, demonstrating the club’s commitment to the local
community, “It was great to take the lads to reward Upton’s students as they
had really contributed to helping make Christmas special for many children,
and we wanted to thank them on behalf of Big Yellow for such a gesture.”

Karen Smale, Head of RS at the School, also thanked the club and Big Yellow
for delivering the surprise training session, “All the students in Year 8 loved
their training session with Chester FC. We do a great deal of work for the
community at the school so it’s fantastic to have them rewarded for their
contribution to the Big Yellow Toy Appeal, of which we are great
supporters.”

Jeff also took part in a challenge of his own at the end of the training session
to prove that Big Yellow staff are the bravest, when he invited 10 players to
take a shot – at the same time – with Jeff in goal in an unusual goalkeeper’s
kit…his Big Yellow uniform! Thankfully, Jeff came out unscathed although he
was caught by a thunderbolt by Chester player Sam Hughes, who is being
targeted by clubs at the Championship and Premier League level this
season.

On Friday 6th January, the Sheffield Bramall store took part in a CycleCharity news
to the Moon event to raise money for the Sheffield Churches Council
for Community Care (SCCCC).
The SCCCC is a local voluntary organisation that works closely with
the statutory agencies in Sheffield to provide a network of support
for mainly older people, their carers and families.
The team pledged to cycle 500 miles toward the charities total,
formed of a mixture of miles cycled in personal time plus using the
exercise bike that was within the store for two days on 17th and 18th
January. On these two days the team worked a rota where there was
at least one person on the exercise bike between the hours of 10am
and 4pm.
The event started on Friday 6th January and ended on Thursday 9th
February. By 17th January the team had cycled 292 miles and raised
£482!! Well done everyone.

Charity news On Wednesday 21st December, Bagshot employees took part in their
5th charity christmas raffle, to raise funds for Phyllis Tuckwell.
In the build up to the day, Andrew Watson and his helpers co-
ordinated the event and took control of raffle ticket selling.
There were some incredible prizes including 8 exquisite hampers, a
beer box, a wine gift box, 5 boxes of chocolates and 96 (!!) bottles
of wine.
In total, Bagshot raised £357 for the charity and had a very merry
Christmas!
