Lesson 2 Helping the Old and Weak
Objectives of this lesson are:
To help students understand different stages and situations of life
To cultivate right emotions, behaviors and attitudes towards people suffering with any
kinds of disability or old-age related problems
I am Sanyog and I live with my grandparents. My father met with
an accident few months ago. He broke one of his legs and his left
arm. He teaches at school in which I study. I help him arranging his
crutches. I accompany him to school and come back home with him.
I make sure that he walks safe with the help of crutches.
Crutches are used by those whose legs are weak Tapping stick for the blind
I see blind people crossing the road. My father asks me to help them
cross the road and make them sit in a vehicle safely. My father knows
such problems very well which cripples the man's life. My mother
takes good care of my old grandparents. Old age also brings weakness
in a person’s life. A person loses energy and muscle's strength in life
due to diseases in old age.
My friend Mahesh’s grandmother has a weak eye-sight. She struggles
to see the things properly. Mahesh holds her hands when she goes out.
She has a stick which she taps on the road while walking. Mahesh's
father is very kind and gives food to the homeless. Mahesh's mother
is a doctor and she gives free check up with medicine to the poor
people.

It is our kindness when we give food and medicine to the homeless and poor.
We need to be very supportive to the old and the weak people present
around us. Life is a cycle and we never know what will happen to us
tomorrow. Therefore, we must not laugh and mock at the old and the

Ask the students what kinds of feelings and thoughts develop in their mind when they meet
or spot out poor, sick and disabled people. Have they ever seen cruel behaviors towards the
people who we must care for and empathize with? Encourage them to share.

Lesson 5 My Duty and Responsibilities
at Home
Objectives of this lesson are:
To develop a sense of duty and responsibilities when children are at home
To develop in them healthy behaviours, co-operative attitude and loving manners towards
the family members.
My name is Bipin Tamang. Being a youngest member of my family, I
receive love and cooperation from all the family members. In return,
I fulfill my essential duties and responsibilities. My home has a set
of daily routine for every member according to their age and work.
This daily routine demands a set of duties and responsibilities from
all of us. I am school going boy and study in Grade One. I have my
own responsibilities to follow. I get up at 6 AM and go to toilet. Then
I go for yoga and light exercise. I brush my teeth every morning. I
clean my body daily. After breakfast I read the textbooks and then get
dressed up for the school at 9 AM.
Waking up at 6 AM, visiting the toilet and brushing my teeth are part of my daily routine.
I do yoga, take bath and then take my breakfast before I go to school.
I take my lunch in the school. I come back home at 4 PM in the
afternoon. I wash up my hands, legs and face to get ready for evening
food. After that I complete my home assignments before I go to play

in the evening. I play with friends who live in my neighbourhood for
about an hour. Then, I come back home and enjoy company of my
family members. At around 7.30 PM, I take dinner with my elders.

for one hour. I go to sleep at 10 PM greeting all of them “good night”.
I take the morning breakfast, prepare lessons for I play in the evening with friends
school then go to school in the morning. who live in my neighbourhood.
I take dinner at around 7.30 PM along with other family members, take help from my parents
in study and then go to sleep at 10 PM.
My parents and grandparents have trained me to perform my duties
and responsibilities everyday. I am really grateful to them.
Teaching Guideline:
Take this opportunity to teach healthy home behaviors amongst the children. Encourage them
to share their daily routine in the classroom and tell them to drop any unhealthy daily behavior

My Surroundings
Objectives of this lesson are:
To familiarize the students with different forms of land topography in their surroundings
To make them understand specific features of a particular land form
Pictures of different land features are on display in the classroom.
These pictures are of different ecological regions of Nepal: Himal
(mountains), Pahad (Hilly region) and Tarai (plains). Miss Sonal
Sharma, a Social Studies teacher, is explaining to the students.
Mountainous region is called Parvat or Himal
Hilly region includes both hills and valleys (popularly known as Pahad)

Plain land in the southern Nepal is popularly known as Tarai region
Sudeepti: Miss, my grandparents live in Dolakha and I was born
there. I have seen mountains, yak and needle-shaped trees in the
surroundings of my birthplace. What region is this, Miss?
Teacher: Very well Sudeepti. You live in the Himal. Top of the
mountains are permanently covered by snow in this region. Villagers
grow what barley and potato as main crops. People live in cold for
most of their life. Because, winter is long and summer is short. Trees
are conical in shape and short in size.
Gautam: Miss, my parents and grandparents reside in Pokhara. I
visit my birthplace during holidays. There are ladder shaped fields.
Pokhara receives a lot of rain. There are beautiful lakes, hills and
valley in my birthplace. I enjoy sunrise and sunset in the background
of Annapurna mountain range. One can also see Machhapuchhre
peak from Pokhara. Have you visited Pokhara, Miss?
Teacher: Oh yes, Pokhara is a valley just like Kathmandu valley
in Nepal. Valleys and hills exist together. Hills are shorter than
mountains in height. Hilly regions in Nepal grow the crops like rice,
wheat, potato, coffee and tea. Broad-leafed trees shed their leaves in
winter in this region. They get their new leaves in spring once again.
People living in this region domesticate animals like goat and cow in
hills.
Bishal: Miss, my parents and grandparents live in Banke district
of Tarai region. There are no mountains, hills and valleys in my

surroundings. My grandfather is a farmer and he grows paddy in
summer and wheat in winter. I like mangoes and visit my village in
summer to eat mangoes.
Teacher: Okay Bishal, you live in the Tarai region of Nepal. The
Tarai region is very fertile. Tarai region is fit for both agriculture and
industry. Trees are strong and sturdy. Woods of trees are used for
making furniture. Farmers domesticate animals like oxen, cows and
buffaloes.
Okay Children, this is all over for today.
Teaching Guideline:
Let the children develop a sense of land topography. Let the children understand the different
land features of Nepal. Also make them conscious or aware about their surroundings.

Lesson 2 Areas around My School
Objectives of this lesson are:
To familiarize the students with surrounding areas of their school
To encourage the students to know more about the geographical areas near to their school
My name is Pemba Tashi Sherpa. I study in a boarding school located
in Lukla. Lukla is the gateway to the Everest region. Many Sherpa
families live in nearby areas. So, there are many Sherpa students
in the school. Lukla is a town located in the Khumbu area. It lies in
Solukhumbu District of Nepal. It lies in the Himalayan region of the
east Nepal. Khumbu is also famous as the Everest region.
Lukla ( in the Khumbu area) gives a majestic view of Himalayan mountains.
My friends who study in my school located in Lukla (Khumbu area).
The word Lukla means a place with many goats and sheep.
Nowadays, not many goats and sheep are found here. Farmers in
Lukla domesticate yaks, cows and goats for their survival. It takes
just two days for travelers to reach the village Namche Bazar from
Lukla. Mount Everest, the tallest mountain of the world is clearly

seen from Namche Bazar. Lukla has a small airport connecting it with
Kathmandu.
We keep our school area clean. I enjoy cleaning the surrounding areas
of my school. We use dustbin to throw wastes in it and dispose it
later. Many tourists visit Lukla for trekking.
Students are picking up the wastes and cleaning the surroundings of the school.
Teaching Guideline:
Let the children understand the location and the surroundings of their school. Help them develop
a sense of buildings, roads, pathways, natural settings such as forests, rivers and mountains in
the surroundings of their school. Teach them a habit of keeping their surroundings clean by
organizing a cleaning program in the classroom and school.
