Lesson 3 The Design of Houses
Objectives of this lesson are:
To encourage the students to find out different designs of houses when they go around
To help them draw the geometrical shapes of houses they have seen so far
Human beings live in houses. Types and designs of houses depend
upon many factors. These factors are climate, land features, presence
of construction materials along with the income and taste of an owner
of the house. Miss Sunita Choudhary, a Social Studies teacher, is
discussing about the designs of houses today in the classroom.
She enters the classroom. All the students of Grade One stand up and
greet her, “Good Morning, Miss”.
Teacher: Very Good Morning to all of you. Please, take your seat.
Namita: Animals and birds do not need houses like us. Miss, why do
we need houses?
Teacher: First of all, houses are shelter for human beings. Houses
give protection to us against harsh climate, natural disasters like
flood, rain, storm, and others. Houses give security for life. Houses
are place for growth and development of humans. Even animals and
birds need shelter. All the animals make (or choose) a place of shelter
such as nest, den and cave. Humans are intelligent beings and have
power to create big things. That is why humans are able to make big
houses and buildings.
Ajay: How do designs of houses vary from one place to another?
Teacher: A design of a house is chosen by an owner. Climate, popular
trend, culture, available construction materials and budget decide a
design of a house. For example, a house in a rural area is different
from a house in urban area. Similarly, a house in a Himalayan region
differs in design from a house in hilly or Tarai region in Nepal. Nepal
is an earthquake prone area. Houses must be built to resist the
earthquakes.
96 Nova Social Studies And Creative Arts Grade-1 >>
Earthquake resistant houses in Nepal.
Ram: What kinds of construction materials are used in making houses
in Nepal?
Teacher: Place and income determine the kinds of construction
materials used in making houses. In rural Nepal, farmers use locally
available materials like wood, bamboo, boulders, stones, thatch,
leaves, stems, rug, cow dung, mud and so on. People with better
income use cement, bricks and iron rod for making houses. Such
houses are seen in the towns and cities of Nepal.
Designs of houses in rural areas use locally available materials
Houses in towns and cities have enough space and modern facilities 97

Lesson 4 The Design of Schools
Objectives of this lesson are:
To help the students understand different geometric shapes which are used in constructing
building of school
To tech them how to draw the geometric shape of your own school building
My name is Shanjay Yadav. I live in Rajbiraj. There are 700 students in
my school. It is three storied building. It has 25 classrooms, assembly
ground, auditorium and a big play ground. There is a separate
parking area for vehicles, guard rooms and canteens. My school has
water taps for drinking water for the students. There are separate
bathrooms and toilets for boys and girls. School has been designed
into three block. Each block operates under the supervision of a block
head. For example, primary block takes care of students from class -1
to class-5 and secondary block includes the students from class-6 to
class-10. Higher secondary block includes the students of class-11 and
class-12.
Architecture (design) of a school-I Architecture (design) of a school-II
My school appears rectangular in design from outside. A design of
school students depends upon the climatic conditions, topography and
the amount of money spent to construct it. In Nepal, the schools need
to follow the architecture (building design) to resist the earthquake.
Teaching Guideline:
Help the children understand the design of a school. Draw different geometrical figures on the
board to help the children understand the size and shape of their school and other schools in
the region. Rectangle, square, oval, angular and others such shapes are useful here for make
them understand the design of a school building.

Ancestors lived in our community a long time ago. They lived in the
past and were our pathfinders. Nepal is the ancient land. In ancient
Nepal, King Janak ruled over Mithila. Janakpur was the capital of
Mithila Kingdom. Princess Sita, the daughter of King Janak, was
married to Prince Ram from Ayodhya. Sita is also known as Janaki.
Both Ram and Sita had divine qualities. Both of them inspire us to be
pure, honest and virtuous. Famous Ram-Janaki temple in Janakpur
is the evidence to this. Famous epics Ramayan and Mahabharat
mention about ancient Nepal. The Shakya kingdom was present
about 2500 years ago. Kapilvastu was the capital of Shakya kingdom.
Siddhartha Gautama was the Shakya prince. He became world famous
as Gautam Buddha. He was born in Lumbini. He preached peace and
non-voilence to all of us.
Ram-Janaki Temple in Janakpur Lumbini - the birthplace of Siddarth Gautam Buddha
Our ancestors were fond of arts and crafts. Ancient religious places
like Pashupatinath temple, Bouddhanath, Swyambhunath are proof
of it. Paintings, designs of building, dance forms, music, and language
are the gifts given to us from our ancestors.

do something or the other to earn money for his family. Economic
activities can be operated both from home and outside home. I am
Sonam Tamrakar and live in Bhaktapur. My ancestors used to make
copper utensils. My father continues the same work of casting copper
utensils and sells them. He operates from home. My home has a
workshop where my father works. My mother cooks homemade
items like pickles, curd and Newari food items to sell them. Both of
my parents conduct their economic activities from home. They earn
money by selling their home-made products. My neighbours make
pots out of clay at home to sell them to customers.

Lesson 4 Being Disciplined at Work
Objectives of this lesson are:
To inculcate the habit of being disciplined in student’s life
To make them realize the benefits of being disciplined in different situations of life.
Be disciplined while being on road driving and alert others to be so.
Every economic activity follows a specific pattern and a rule of
performance. It is necessary to train oneself in accordance with the
nature of work one does. This is called discipline. Discipline makes
a person conscious of his or her own act to perform it in a right way.
Discipline makes a person behave in an acceptable manner in a
particular situation. Discipline plays a key role to complete a work
in hand successfully. A student in a classroom cannot learn without
being disciplined. A careless student will never do well in school tests.
A disciplined student is always careful and not careless. Similarly,
mother will not be able to cook food and do other household work if
she is not disciplined. Discipline in our daily life brings success and
satisfaction. It helps us gain knowledge and develop our capacity to
do more work. Here are examples. If a farmer knows how to sow the
seeds and reap the harvest, he (or she) will never fail in getting good
140 Nova Social Studies And Creative Arts Grade-1 >>
results. Similarly, if a driver does not know how to drive a public bus
safely, he will meet with an accident. Discipline is the condition to
perform a task successfully. Discipline brings alertness and caution
in our life. Discipline is needed everywhere. It is needed both inside
and outside our home.
Manual work like knitting and weaving and rolling demands discipline inside home.
Teaching Guideline:
What is discipline? Why is it important in economic and non-economic activity? Explain its
meaning and scope to students through live examples in an interesting manner. Start from the
class situation itself, then extends it to outside world and then finally take them to their home
situations.
Words and Terms you would like to know:
Knit: to interlock loops of yarn, using either long needles or a machine, or make a garment or
other item by this method
Systematic: well organized; done in a methodical way
Essential: necessary
Performance: something that is carried out or completed
