Preface

‘Social Studies and Creative Arts for Grade One’ has adopted practical approach
in order to guide the students towards effective learning in a playful manner.
Right from the first lesson till the end, students have creative involvement with
different kinds of arts, drawings, tricks besides traditional patterns of questions
and answers. This book follows the patterns of emotional and perceptive growth
of students at Grade One level. At this stage of life, children are deeply connected
with family. School is not a very interesting place for children if they do not find
it full of fun, play and care. Every exercise here in the present book has created a
situation to get the children involved in the creative art, fun activities, discussion
and role playing under the able guidance of teachers. Children will become more
expressive and will develop more capabilities at cognitive and emotional level after
they gradually proceed with each exercise. Since social interactions happen both at
home as well as school, this book has dealt with topics related with family, home
and school with great concern keeping in mind the specific situation and purpose
children experience while growing up. Children at this age develop the ability to
defend their choices inform of their likes and dislikes. The exercises at the end of
every lesson make them much more capable to reason with anyone who confront
them. They share their emotions with friends, family members and teachers. They
have feeling of empathy. This book has taken care of all these elements which a
development psychologist will agree with and stand for. I expect the teachers to
be cooperative and patient with the children in dealing with each and every lesson
along with the exercises given there. Parents and guardians have again equally
important role to play assisting a child. They are advised to find enough time to
explain the exercises for encouraging the participation of their ward in learning
activities.

Lesson 1

Me and My Family

Objectives of this lesson are:

 To relate oneself with one’s own family
 To understand the nature of different relationship within a family
 To learn more about other relatives and different aspects of a family

My name is Rupesh Acharya. I
am 8 years old. I am the student
of Grade Three. I got enrolled
in this school when I was just
six years old. I belong to a large
family. My family members
include grandparents, parents,
elder brother and younger
sister. Family is a group in
which members are connected
by blood and love.

My grandfather is 70 years old
and he is a farmer. My grandmother assists my grandfather while
working on farmland. She is sixty five years old but still very active.
She keeps herself busy with daily house works. My family gets all the
cereal grains for entire year from the farmland. My grandfather also
sells the cereal grains in a local market of a village. My grandparents
take care of me. They guide me on how to do daily work in proper
manner. Thanks to my grandparents, I have learnt how to welcome
guest and be respectful to others. My grandfather has taught me to show
courtesy to other farmers whom he meets daily. My grandmother tells
me interesting stories. Her stories carry moral values and important
lessons of life. I like her stories. She also trains me in doing some
easy works like washing my own clothes, cleaning a plates, table and
chair, folding my own beds and polishing shoes etc.

My parents work outside. My father is 35 years old and he is a banker.
My mother is 32 years old and she is a nurse. My father goes to work

2 Nova Social Studies And Creative Arts Grade-3 >>

in a bank from 9 AM to 5 PM. He is always available to me. I keep in
touch with him on phone. I ask him to buy whatever I need. He buys
the things for me. My mother works in a hospital and she works in
different shifts. She also works in night shift. I think her job is more
challenging because she serves patients even during the night. I
admire my mother because of her dedication to patients who look for
her help. I am proud of her. She never minds to take me to her work
place in a hospital. I learn so much when I see her working in front
of my own eyes. She also buys me all the things which I need for my
study and play.

My elder brother is in Grade Five. I have one younger sister who is in
Grade One. All of us go to same school together. We take care of each
other. I take care of my younger sister. We are one family with a total
of seven members.

Lesson 2

Helping Family Members in their Work

Objectives of this lesson are:

 To understand a true family spirit
 To learn the importance of care and cooperation with a family
 To develop helping behaviour towards each other within a family

Family is a group of people connected by blood and love. Family
members take care of each other. They celebrate in good times and
support each other in bad times. They stand for each other. It is the
duty of each and every family member to help others who are in
distress. Sometimes family members do not feel well or are in need of
something. In such a situation, family stands by his or her side. This
is how family gives love, protection and cooperation to its members.

Kamala Giri is my classmate.

I am Ratna Tuladhar and I am

the student of Grade-three.

Kamala Giri has younger

brother who is five years

old. She helps her mother in

keeping the younger brother

safe. When her mother gets

busy with the household work,

Kamala guides the younger Kamala is teaching her younger brother.
brother in study. She plays

with her brother and follows the necessary instructions given by her

own mother. I too help my grandmother in arranging the food for

other family members. I offer a glass of water to my family members

when they ask me for it. I take the things from one place to another

place in my house at the advice of my elders.

Umesh Karna, another classmate, is also very helpful. He has a younger

sister studying in the same school. He never leaves his younger sister

alone on the way to school. He waits for her after the school is over

and takes her safe back to home. His parents work outside during the

<< Nova Social Studies And Creative Arts Grade-3 5

day. So, Umesh serves the food to himself and to her younger sister
as well. He eats together with sister. He never fights with his younger
sister. He shares his pencils, eraser and sharpener with her.

Sugandha Shrestha, my

another classmate, has a

beautiful garden in front of

her house. She waters the

plants when her grandparents

work in the garden. She

keeps the basket ready when

grandmother collects the

green vegetables grown in the

garden. She helps in lifting the

and gives and carry supports

it to the house. She Helps in lifting the basket full of green vegetables

and gives supports to carry it to the house. She supports her old

grandparents when they fall sick.

Each and every family member helps and cooperates with other
members according to their age and capacity. This is called family spirit.
True family spirit is all about love, affection, care and cooperation.

facilities if I neglect my duty of taking proper care of my own room,
study table, personal clothes and other such things. Locally made
Pirka, Gundri, Mandro and Khat are used in my house. All of us in the
family never spoil these items and use them for sitting.
My grandparents use Doko, Dalo and Nanglo for collecting, cleaning
and carrying cereal grains, vegetables and fruits. My grandmother
has told all of us not to misplace these items. Therefore, we keep them
at fixed place and in proper order. In time of need, we easily find
them.

Locally made items used in daily life activities within a family

My father and grandfather use kamij, Kurta, Dhoti, Daura-Suruwal, Coat-
Paint, Cap and Topi etc as daily wear. My mother and grandmother

Lesson 1

Hospitality to Guests

Objectives of this lesson are:

 To impart the lessons on manners and courtesy shown towards the guest
 To teach the students about our culture where guests are given due respect
 To learn the duty of being host and responsibilities of being guest

Guests are most welcome. Nepali culture gives importance to the
guests. Hosts take the greatest possible care of their guests. Saran
Singh recalls the incident of his own house when guests come and
stay with his family members.

Saran: Namaste Rahaman uncle and Shabnam aunty! Please come
inside and have a seat.

Rahman uncle: Namaste! Where is your father? I have come to meet
him from Birgunj with my wife. What is about your mother?

Saran: Yes uncle, I know that. My father was talking about your visit.
He has told me to receive you at home in his absence. All of us were
expecting your arrival. My parents have gone to attend a Bratabandh
ceremony of my cousin brother. They will come back within an hour.
I am here specially to receive both of you.

Saran is receiving guests from outside. 19

<< Nova Social Studies And Creative Arts Grade-3

Shabnam aunty: Okay Saran……..I will first take shower because it
was so tiring journey from Birgunj to Kathmandu.

Saran: Yes aunty…I understand. My mother has already cooked food
for both of you. With your permission I want to serve the food to both
of you.

Rahman uncle: Oh, thank you very much…but wait for a while. First
I want to take bath and change my clothes.

Saran: Sure, uncle.

Salman uncle and Saran’s father are childhood friends and they grew
up together studying in the same school. Their friendship is still fresh
as it was then.

Shabnam aunty: Saran…you should not bother about our comfort
and things related with food. We are all right and we shall wait for
your parents to come back. All of us will have food together.

Door bell rings………Shabnam aunty herself takes a lead and open
the door. My parents arrive…and they express their joy after seeing
Shabnam aunty and salman uncle. My mother greets them with
‘Namaste’. In teturn Shabnam aunty gives a bear hug to my mother.

My mother: I am sorry to keep you waiting. Please, feel free to share
your likes and dislikes so that we can offer our hospitality and adjust
accordingly.

Shabnam aunty: My goodness…you are jewel amongst the hosts. I
will be helping you in your kitchen and serve the food together with
you.

In meantime, there is a knock at the door. This time, I rush to the door
and receive local area health assistant, Miss Saroj Giri.

Miss Saroj Giri: Namaste to everybody. I am health assistant newly
appointed here in a nearby health post. Children below 5 years in every
house have to be fed with Vitamin-A capsules and other necessary
nutrients. Are there any children in your family or neighbourhood
deserving to be helped.

Saran’s mother: Namaste sister…thank you for the service offered on
behalf of the government. Please be seated and have tea with us.

(All the guests take seats. My mother offers tea to all the three guests
along with water and snacks.)

My father: Saroj sister! is it all about distributing Vitamin-A tablets
only? What is about vaccination for children to protect them against
other diseases? I have my own son who is four years old and other
such children in my neighbourhood.

Miss Saroj Giri: Sir! Vaccination is also continuing there. Please, visit
the health post with your child. Thank you very much for tea and
your hospitality. Now, it is time to go to other houses.

Lesson 2

Language and Dress of Locals in Villages

Objectives of this lesson are:

 To know the traditional dress (attire) of different ethnic communities of Nepal
 To understand the linkage between traditional dresses and self-respect of the ethnic

community

The Rai are ethnic groups of Nepal living mainly in the eastern hilly
region of Nepal. My name is Manish Tuladhar and I am the student
of Grade-Eight. My classmate Sangeeta Rai has her own language
and specific dress code. Her family members wear specific ethnic
dress at special occasions like Dhannach. Her mother wears flower
printed phariya (loin cloth) and cholo (blouse) of dhaka (a kind of
fabric). After that she ties patuka (long folded cloth) in her waist.
She uses dori (thick thread) in her hair, wears dhungri (big earrings),
bulaki (nose pin) and put chandrama (gold plated ornament in moon
shape). She wears jantar (spiritual ornament) around her neck and
bangles in the wrist.

Women from Rai community are wearing their own ethnic dress.

Sangeeta’s soaltee (cousin brother) puts on daura suruwal and jwari
coat over it. He wraps patuka around his waist and places khukuri (a
sharp knife as weapon) in it. He puts dhaka topi on his head. Rojan
Dhimal is a classmate of mine. He comes from Dhimal community
of the Tarai spreading in Morang and Jhapa districts. Dhimal
community has its own language and dress code. Rojan’s mother

23<< Nova Social Studies And Creative Arts Grade-3

wears Bohana -- the traditional ethnic dress. Bohana is an everyday
dress Dhimal women wear. Bohana is generally woven by Dhimal

women themselves.

Newar woman Sherpa woman Dhimal woman

Manasree Newa is a friend of mine and her ancestral home is in
Kathmandu valley. Her family speaks Newari (also known as Nepal
Bhasa) as mother tongue. Newari ethnic dress is still popular within
the community. Newari men wear a long shirt (called tapālan) and
tight fitting trousers known as suruwā. A waistcoat and coat may be
worn over the shirt as a choice. Newar women are seen wearing hāku
patāsi (a black cotton sari with a red border) and misālan (a blouse).
Some Newar women also wear plain or printed saris known as parsi.

Apa Sherpa from my class follows the Sherpa culture. His ancestors
lived in the Tengboche (or Thyangboche) village in the Khumbu
region of northeastern Nepal. Sherpa language is still spoken in the
Solukhumbu district of Nepal. Sherpas reside in mountainous region
of Nepal. Therefore, the clothing and costumes of the Sherpa people
are generally made from yak and sheep wool. Both men and women
wear a long inner shirt over a pant-like garment. They wrap a thick,
coarse, robe (Bakkhu) around their body. The length of Bakkhu reaches
below their knees. They fasten a Bakkhu at the side. Sherpa women
use the multicoloured striped aprons to cover the front and back of
the bodies below the waist. Sherpas are good in mountaineering and
live in the mountains permanently covered by snow. Therefore, they
wear specially made shoes to protect their feet from snow bite called
Docha (or snow shoes).

Lesson 1

Cooperation with the Disabled

Objectives of this lesson are:

 To know the limitations with which disabled people live the life
 To develop sensitivity and empathy amongst the students for those who suffer with

disability of one or the other kind

A person with disability suffers with a physical or mental problem
that limits at least one major life activity. Disability is a challenge to
face and not a curse to get defeated. My name is Anish Tiwari studying
in Grade Three. I have a live experience of disability. My both the
legs were broken when I fell down in a field while playing football.
It happened only ten months ago. My legs were plastered and I was
on crutch for six long months. I was not able to do daily activities
like any other normal human beings. I used to take help from my
family members, neighbours and friends. All of them readily offered
help to me. I wrote my annual examination and passed it with flying
colours. I was proud of myself to fight disability with will power
and determination to overcome it. No doubt, it was all possible due
to continuous cooperation, help and motivation received from my
family members, friends and
other helpful people. I was in
temporary disability. But, I know
many people are in permanent
disability for their entire life.

My neighbour Basanti Giri has
lost her eyesight and she cannot
see. She walks with the help of
special white stick. She walks
alone with the help of that stick
even if there is nobody around.
She is 30 years old and motivates
others without eyesight to not to
be helpless in their life. She tries

37<< Nova Social Studies And Creative Arts Grade-3

to do her daily activities on her own by using her power of smell,
touch and intuition. She cooks her food if required, washes her clothes
and maintains cleanliness without any power of seeing. She does it all
due to her determination to live the life. She also listens to important
debate and discussion with full attention and gives her wise advice
if required. She is true inspiration for all those who always complain
and demand more.

Sometimes my elder brother

Manish Tiwari goes into depression

when he gets low marks in class

test. He is in Grade Ten. He feels

nervous and avoids people. He

becomes nervous before a group

of people when asked to speak.

This kind of problem is common

and we overcome them with

understanding of life. Life poses

failures and difficulties. My father

says that there are people who

need to take maximum care of them and treat them with love and

affection.

Teaching Guideline

Sensitize the students regarding people with disability and encourage them to be helpful
towards them. Stage a drama in the classroom so that students develop compassion and
understanding towards such people suffering from disability.

Lesson 2

Help the Poor and Helpless

Objectives of this lesson are:

 To develop the inner quality of being helpful attitude and behaviour towards those who are
poor and helpless

 To understand that all of us are dependent upon each other and therefore must be
compassionate towards others

In human society not everyone is rich and well to do. There are poor
people around us. Poverty prevails in Nepal. What is poverty or who
is poor? Those people who do not have enough money for the basic
things (like food, shelter, clothes, healthcare and education) are called
poor. Poverty is the condition of being deprived of essential needs of
life. My name is Aash Gurung and I am the student of Grade Three.
I think everyone has seen or experienced poverty. The Poor people
are helpless but all the helpless people are not poor. It is because all
of us feel helpless or become helpless at one or the other occasions in
life. We became helpless for short or long period of time in life due
to disease, disaster or disability at individual and societal level. A
helpless person lacks protection or support and is unable to act or
react according to demands of a situation of life. A helpless person
has no control over situation he or she is in and this is why he or she
needs help from others.

Extending the helping hand and emotional support to the helpless

I have seen helplessness within my family and outside. I have also
experienced helplessness when I fall sick or I am not able to reach
home because of sudden strike and violence on road. I feel helplessness

41<< Nova Social Studies And Creative Arts Grade-3

when heavy rains chokes the road while coming back from school.
Old people gets caught into bustling crowd while crossing the road.
Persons without visions are bullied by miscreants and anti-social
elements. Ambulance is stopped because of long traffic jam and
some political protest. These are examples of helplessness. What are
the ways to come out of state of helplessness? I asked this question
from my father. My father explained, “Full care and support must be
given by family members, friends and others to the helpless people.
Financial, medical and emotional support helps them come out of
the condition of helplessness. Poor people should be given skills and
opportunity to earn money. Those who are capable and rich should
make contributions for the welfare of the poor people”.
My school collects clothes, food, old books, stationary items and even
money to distribute amongst poor people and orphan children. My
school takes us to meet children who live in orphanage and child care
centre to interact with them. I meet so many children of my own age
who have lost their parents and guardians in a disaster. I feel great
when I find them happy under the care of sincere caregivers.
