Growing together 31 Dear Friends, I would like to offer my most sincere thanks for elec ng me as FCBM President. FCBM has made me immensely responsible for our members' well-being. I am conscious of the very high honour bestowed on me and will do my best to fulfil all expecta ons and du es of this august post. The Federa on of Corrugated Box Manufacturers (FCBM) of India is a leading & vibrant organisa on. Over the last five decades, FCBM has rendered yeoman's service for be erment of its members and promo on of Corrugated Box usage & the corruga on industry. Throughout our great history of 50 long years, my predecessors have toiled hard to make it one of the premier trade associa ons in the country. They have given us high ideals and shone light on the path to greater heights. I will do my humble best to follow in their footsteps. My vision starts with strengthening our hands with more members. By the most conserva ve es mates, there are about 15000 big and small corrugated manufacturing units in our country. Our membership hovers at about 2500. I have revived the Membership Drive commi ee this year and the commi ee will brainstorm ideas to get more of our brethren into the Federa on. I firmly believe “The Future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine in the crea ve ways”. Hence, we'd be planning training programs including topics like right cos ng for be er profits, business automa on, management programs, industry best prac ces, all tuned to build healthy eco-system for semi-automa c and manual plants business. We will also be addressing a major gap in our industry – trained manpower. We are planning an all-India Incuba on and Training centre, which would definitely cater to the issue. We want to bring awareness of MSME schemes from central government and its updates for our members' benefit. Addi onally, an interna onal grade exhibi on in India for our industry will be planned. India's economy is growing gradually but consistently. The Gross domes c product (GDP) had grown 8.7% in FY22, boosted by the pandemic-induced low base of FY21. India's economy is likely to grow 7% in the current fiscal year. Taking advantage as well as contribu ng our own bit as the Indian Corrugated Packaging Industry to the Indian Economy, we must turn to innova on, technical efficiency and quality consciousness to help our business flourish. We as industry stakeholders are aware of mul ple challenges that we all face, coming together and standing united will surely help us overcome those challenges over me. FCBM has been striving con nuously for long to create new bridges with not only their customers but also suppliers. At the associa on level, FCBM has been working on the issues of quality & standardiza on of paper supplies for over 30 years. There has been considerable improvement in some parameters with a lot s ll to be achieved. In my tenure I wish to use every single minute of mine for be erment and holis c growth of our members benefi ng our federa on and our na on at large. Jai Hind ! P eople are con nuing to switch to waterac vated tape (WAT) for the several benefits it provides the packaging industries as well as the receivers. Because this tape provides such a strong bond to the corrugated carton, the sender can rest assure the package makes it to its des na on safely and the sender will be pleased with the professional packaging. Another added benefit from WAT is that the material is made from paper, which makes for eco-friendly recyclability. Not only does WAT provide a permanent bond to the corrugated carton but also helps protect the environment, which is a common quality that people require when purchasing from specific brands. How can water-ac vated paper tape provide sustainability? Check out the ar cle below for more informa on about how sustainable paper tape can benefit you as well as the environment. Know The Carton Sealing Tapes Available Sustainability may not seem like the most significant element but it's important to know that switching to WAT not only saves money, boosts produc vity and helps to market your brand but it also considerably protects the environment. Other carton sealing tapes such as plas c tape gather around 580 million pounds clogging U.S. landfills every year and this tape doesn't even offer a tamper-evident and a guaranteed secure seal. Landfills have led to some of the most heated, acrimonious ba les over pollu on in the public commons that have ever been seen. Too much plas c ends up in landfills where it may take up to 1,000 years to decompose, and poten ally leak pollutants into the soil and water. It's es mated that there are also 100 millions tons of plas c debris floa ng around in the oceans threatening the health and safety of marine life (Source). So if this isn't reason enough to switch than maybe saving money from sustainable paper tape will be. Saving Money On Material Costs With WAT, you only need one strip of tape versus several strips from plas c tape to securely seal your package. This will evidently save money on resources needed and reduce the amount of hazardous materials. Packers tend to use several strips of plas c tape to try to secure their cartons. To avoid this issue a lot of companies make the mistake of buying cheaper tape in an effort to reduce plas c tape costs. However, this can lead to poor sealing and higher risks of tampering due to the thinner material with less adhesive. While on a “per foot” basis, plas c tape is o en less expensive, because packers use so many strips of tape for closure, the cost advantage quickly disappears and ul mately WAT is less expensive, not to men on, more effec ve. Be er Packages | Water-Ac vated Tape Water-ac vated tape has several benefits and sustainability is just one of many. What else can water-ac vated tape do? Check out some of the other benefits below: The : WAT discourages the because it is difficult to remove without leaving obvious signs of tampering. It literally bonds to the carton. The during the shipping process usually occurs because it is easy to do and difficult to get caught. With WAT, easy, undetected entry is not possible. Cost-effec veness: On a per-foot basis, WAT is o en more expensive than plas c pressuresensi ve tape (PST). However, since you only need one strip of tape to securely seal a carton, the per foot differen al usually disappears as packers o en use two to three strips of plas c PST. Companies derive addi onal cost savings from the lack of the associated with WAT. Clima c Condi ons: WAT performs well under the extreme condi ons of cold, heat, light, humidity and dirt, maintaining its bonding proper es and the carton's seal. Branding: Branding is a cri cal element for businesses growth. By using water-ac vated tape, a company is easily able to print its logo or a message right on the tape in either full color or black and white. This keeps your brand front and center when your carton arrives at your customer's home or office. Source: Be er Packages How Can Water-Activated Paper Tape Provide Sustainability? S caling up your manufacturing business is an essen al part of growing a profitable company. However, the manufacturing sector faces a unique scaling challenges that require a strategic approach to processes, planning and implementa on to create a sustainable business model. Kapil Davda discusses the tension between growth and scaling, the risks of falling behind, and how manufacturers can progressively scale t h e i r w o r k i n g prac ces to target long-term, efficient growth and adapt to market changes. Scaling vs growth Scaling is a key element of growing any business, to t h e p o i n t t h a t s o m e m e s t h e terms 'growth' and 'scaling' are used interchangeably. However, in prac ce there are subtle differences that dictate how you approach each. l Growth is an output-focused metric, looking at what your manufacturing business is producing. This could be in terms of produc on volumes, run rate, customers, warehouse space or revenue – growth is the process of increasing these outputs for the benefit of the business. l Scaling is an input-focused metric, looking at what needs to be done in order to produce these growth outputs. This can include the number of employees you have, the number of machines you use, the raw materials you buy or the me required to make a par cular product. l The act of scaling a business involves regularly re-evalua ng exis ng processes, systems and working prac ces to ensure that they are able to at least keep up with, if not drive, the growth of the business. This is because a growing business requires a different approach to a smaller opera on. A key example of this in prac ce is produc on volumes: in order to increase produc on capacity by 100%, you could double your amount of machines, or the amount of me you run them. However, these will require more space and more staff, respec vely, and at some point you may hit a ceiling on these two resources, preven ng your growth. The answer is to regularly reassess your capabili es in order to ensure that they can con nue to enable your growth, without risking profits, customer sa sfac on or employee reten on. Scaling challenges in Manufacturing Scaling a manufacturing business presents several challenges that can limit your growth if not addressed proac vely. How to scale your manufacturing business October - December 2022 | The Corrugator 39 CORRU-GROWTH
Sourcing raw materials or components Your supply of materials and components is the most basic limiter of your produc on capacity. It's essen al to ensure that you can not only source enough of these, but also at the right price and me frame. High transport costs and long lead mes can eat into your margins or reduce produc on capacity. Scaling will require riskproofing your upstream supply chain, via contrac ts, di versifica on or transport agreements. Talent The next main limiter of your produc on ability is human resources - ensuring that you have both the right number of people and the right skills. In a ght labour market it may take longer or cost more to hire new staff, risking cu ng into your margins or slowing produc on. Proac ve planning requires a long term plan for training and upskilling employees, as well managing reten on to minimise hiring needs. Talent can also be augmented with addi onal technical capacity. Costs and infla on Over me, the cost of produc on is likely to increase. This can either be a steady increase as in the case of general infla on, or spikes in energy prices or commodi es due to global events. These increases are difficult to pass on to consumers, so while the la er can be difficult to an cipate, it's essen al to consider mi ga on of price increases in your processes. This can include inves ng in more efficient machinery, regularly reviewing suppliers for compe ve pricing and reviewing your pricing in the market in line with compe tors. When is it the right me to scale up Scaling your opera ons should always be considered in line with growth. Depending on your planning cycle and market condi ons, this may be done in an cipa on of growth or on review once growth has happened. Key scenarios to consider scaling your processes include: Introducing new products or services l Adap ng to new compe on in your market by increasing output or efficiency l Taking advantage of a new market opportunity l In line with a regular review of pipeline – if you see business increasing steadily, budget me for scaling in advance Focus areas of manufacturing scaling When reviewing your scalability, there are three key areas to consider: your technology, your people and your customers. By proac vely assessing your performance in these areas in line with your projected growth you can mi gate some of the challenges described above. Technology Technology is a core part of every manufacturing business, but its impact goes well beyond the produc on process. Given the rapid advances in hardware and so ware available, I recommend to my clients to regularly review all their processes, both technology and human-based to ensure they're opera ng at peak performance. This can include: l Produc on: AI tools a ren't just for interna onal manufacturing giants – they can also have a significant impact on produc on costs and efficiency for smaller businesses too l Ba c k-offic e proc e ss e s: Cloud-ba s ed technology is now an essen al tool for managing data across your organisa on, from spending and accoun ng to business intelligence. Modern so ware can be integrated across all your core systems, inc luding stoc k , ERP, budge ng and manufacturing to help you track performance at scale and produc vity. l Marke ng and visibility: Compared to marke ng strategies used a decade ago, the way manufacturers market their business has changed drama cally. Your clients are increasingly using the online space to research and evaluate their op ons. How to scale your manufacturing business CORRU-GROWTH business has invested in a digital marke ng strategy or you will be risking not being found by your future customers. With the right digital marke ng strategy, and a reliable digital marke ng partner, manufacturers can strengthen their brand awareness, differen ate themselves from compe tors, create a voice for their brand, and posi on themselves as experts. There may also be scope to claim valuable Research and Development tax credits if the manufacturing business is inves ng in innova on. This can help fund investment in new technology. People and resources Despite the technology focus of manufacturing businesses, all your machinery is useless without the right team. Tracking your staff's performance and managing their needs is a key part of building a scalable business, but it requires careful a en on. Key considera ons include: Staffing strategy: Just as you would match tools to products, it's important to match the right people to the right processes. Your payroll is one of the biggest contributors to your produc on costs so making the best use of your team's skills can help bring down produc on costs and improve your margins. For more experienced team members, leverage their experience to support newer hires or manage more responsibility. Reten on and sa sfac on: It's always more expensive to hire new staff than to retain exis ng team members. Work with your team to build progression pathways that feel rewarding and that balance their needs with those of the business. Recruitment: When you bring on new team members, make sure your recruitment policies are se ng you up for future success. Balance the short term needs of the business with an idea of how individuals might contribute in future and offer training and technology that can help them grow with the business over me. Customers Not all customers are created equal and finding the right audience to sell to is key to building a scalable opera on. While many manufacturers just look to sell to as many customers as possible, a strategic approach can yield significant advantages. Managing risk: Serving fewer, larger customers is simpler from a produc on point of view, but leaves you more open to risk a customer leaves. Being reliant on a par cular customer can also leave you in a weaker posi on when nego a ng terms and prices. Work to build a mix of customers that provides opportuni es for growth and building value-driven rela onships. Input vs return: While most customers will be paying the same price for your goods, not all will be as valuable as others. Those that bring extra demands, frequently return goods or pay late are actually cos ng you more in me and stress, and may in the end not be worth their business. How we can posi on you for scalable growth Scaling your business is a unique and exci ng challenge, but the right support can make a significant difference in your results. At Haines Wa s, our High Wycombe team can help manufacturing businesses move from their first customers to becoming interna onal players. From cost analysis to assis ng with claiming Research and Development tax credits, we partner with you for every step of the way to make sure you're making the right decisions for your future.
