Annual Report 2023-24

Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya | Annual Report 2023-24 99 Project Chairs Date of Completion: 13th of April 2024 Rtr. Taniya De Silva Rtr. Dilakshi Thilakarathna Project එ ව The background for project එ ව was based on how to build peace in the Sri Lankan social space and how practical steps can be taken in this regard. With the main aim of finding sustainable solutions for this matter, the team made all their planning and executed the project by relating to the Sustainable Development Goal 16 and the Rotary Focus Area 01. Several social groups were identified that have the potential to bring about a positive change in society, and focused on the possibilities of engaging those social groups with this project. For that, the team worked to engage lecturers, lawyers, journalists, child rights activists, human rights activists, prisoners, and finally, children who are the foundation of society and could easily grasp the message of living harmoniously with other ethnicities. The first phase aimed to raise awareness about human rights through the YouTube space by launching a podcast series. It was decided to publish five different podcasts featuring five different resource persons from various professions through the official Rotaract UOK YouTube channel. With an approximate number of 850+ views, the podcast series was a sustainable solution to promote peaceful communities in Sri Lanka. The second phase focused on fostering a positive mindset among prisoners to ensure they don’t revert back to their old ways. The counselling session and music therapy program conducted for the inmates of Wataraka Open Prison Camp constituted the second phase of the project, aligning with the noble notion that "Prisoners are also Human Beings." In collaboration with the Prison Commission of Sri Lanka, more than 40 inmates were engaged, including child inmates from the Suneetha National School under the Watareka Open Prison Camp. Mr. Tharindu Dhananjaya, a Counselor and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Human Resources Management, University of Kelaniya, led a counselling session aimed at instilling positive attitudes. To amplify the impact of our efforts, TV Derana, Sri Lanka Rupavahini, and ITN channels collaborated with us, enhancing the reach and success of our program. The third phase of the project involved a cultural event that brought together children from schools representing various religions in Colombo. Over sixty children, accompanied by their teachers, participated in this event. It's crucial to instill good values in children from a young age, fostering respect and cooperation towards others. This event provided them with an opportunity to interact and enjoy activities with students from different religious backgrounds, including Buddhist, Hindu, Islam, and Catholic. Through targeted initiatives such as awareness campaigns, counselling sessions, cultural events, and engagement with diverse groups, the project contributed to building bridges, promoting understanding, and nurturing a culture of harmony and cooperation among different segments of society.

The second phase focused on maternal health and infant care. An awareness program was conducted on the 9th of March 2024, at the Pugoda MOH office to educate expectant mothers on healthy pregnancies and newborn care. The program included activities such as meditation and musical therapy to support mental well-being. Dr. K.R.N. Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya | Annual Report 2023-24 The Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya undertook an ambitious community service project titled <හÐÀ ම=, aimed at instigating positive behavioral changes in waste management practices among Sri Lankans. This multi-phased project adopted an innovative approach to tackle the pressing issue of plastic pollution in the country. Phase 1 involved creating an informative documentary showcasing how plastic bottles are transformed into fibers and threads by Eco Spindles (Pvt) Ltd. This engaging film, featuring an interview with the company's CEO, successfully raised public awareness about this sustainable solution and its potential economic benefits. Building on this foundation, Phase 2 provided practical facilities for proper waste disposal. In collaborations with partners like CocaCola and Cleantech (Pvt) Ltd, plastic bottle collection bins were strategically installed at the University of Kelaniya premises, railway stations, schools, and other public spaces. An e-waste collection drive was also successfully conducted within the university. The final phase culminated in an artistic triumph - the construction of an eye-catching decorative item made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Installed within the university premises, this creative piece inspired undergraduates to explore recycling solutions while serving as a lasting symbol of the project's vision. The "හÐÀ ම" project exemplified the club's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The club has significantly expanded its social media presence and reach, utilizing new platforms to stay up-to-date with modern trends. To ensure high standards, guidelines were given to designers and writers at the start of the year, requiring all content to be approved by PR Directors and Editors before publication. In the era of the "New Normal," the focus of PR Avenue is primarily on online public relations. Each and every organizing committee for the projects consisted of designers, video creators, and content writers, who worked together to effectively communicate our message to the target audience. Building upon the previous Rotaract year's efforts, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok were identified as the most effective platforms to engage with the desired audience. Consequently, priority was given to establishing a strong image for RACUOK on these platforms. All the Project flyers, videos, and blogs were shared on Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, and Instagram, while LinkedIn posts were reserved for unique posts. Furthermore, YouTube and the Club Blog were utilized to connect with the audience on those specific platforms. In the fast-paced realm of social media, the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya encountered a dilemma. Thereafter, a set of guidelines were implemented, ensuring equal access to these coveted peak hours for all initiatives. By incorporating these guidelines into their PR calendar, they strategically scheduled the release of captivating flyers, granting each project a fair chance to shine.Through this harmonious approach, RACUOK levelled the playing field, allowing every PR material to captivate the public's attention. The club's message echoed across social media platforms, fostering an environment of equal opportunity and genuine engagement.
