COMMUNITY SERVICE Avenue

Chronicle Edition 3 13 As the Rotary International year 2023/24 entered its third quarter, the Community Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya celebrated the successful completion of all four phases of Project "ස්වභා සමුද්‍ර”. This milestone marked not just the culmination of months of hard work but also the beginning of a new chapter in the avenue’s mission of service. The year started with the first virtual meetup of the avenue’s next biggest project. Project “Ignite ஸ்ரீ ලං කා ” is a long-term initiative aimed at uplifting the quality of life of rural communities across the country. This year, the project focuses on Kokmaduwa and Thammannawa, which are rural areas in the Giribawa division, in Kurunegala. The project addresses key sectors including economic development, clean water, agriculture, education, healthcare, youth and women empowerment. The Organizing Committee meetings of this project were scheduled to take place weekly to keep track of progress across the six sectors involved. This systematic approach ensures the project’s successful implementation. February brought exciting news as project ස්වභා සමුද්‍ර secured a title sponsorship from SGS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. The fourth and final phase, which included a Coral Cleanup, took place on the 15th of February 2024 in collaboration with the Dodanduwa Diving Center in Hikkaduwa. The day was not just about cleanup efforts; it was a testament to the shared commitment towards marine conservation. On the way to the destination, the team stopped by at the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Center to open the turtle tank donated to the center, as promised in Phase 01 and it was successfully done with the presence of the esteemed members of SGS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.

Upon reaching the Dodanduwa Diving Center, the participants engaged in a brief awareness session led by Mr. Chanaka Sooriyabandara, a Research Scientist at Blue Ocean Trust, who gave insights on the challenges faced by coral reefs. Following that, the participants actively took part in the coral cleanup and beach cleanup activities, showcasing their dedication to coastal preservation. To celebrate the hard work and contributions of everyone involved, the Organizing Committee members and the members of the Executive Committee were treated with a special beach camping experience. Following the completion of Project ස්වභා සමුද්‍ර, the focus shifted completely to Project Ignite ஸ்ரீ ලං කා in March. PR materials were shared to introduce the project and its various initiatives, while fund raising activities and efforts to seek sponsorships were carried out. The clean water and agriculture sectors also conducted field visits to the villages in the last two weeks of March for water testing purposes. Chronicle Edition 3 14 With over 100 participants, including club members and volunteers, making a collective impact on ocean and biodiversity conservation efforts, Phase 04 of project ස්වභා සමුද්‍ර was a resounding success. A heartfelt vote of thanks was extended to SGS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. for their sponsorship and to the Dodanduwa Diving Center for their collaboration.

On 20th of March, a farewell get-together was organized for the ස්වභා සමුද්‍ර Organizing Committee to celebrate the project’s success and appreciate all the members for their hard work throughout the project. The success of Project ස්වභා සමුද්‍ර and the ongoing efforts for Project Ignite ஸ்ரீ ලං කා are a testament to the unwavering support and dedication of the club’s members and volunteers. Their commitment paves the way for a promising future of impactful community service initiatives. With these remarkable achievements, the Community Service Avenue looks forward to embarking on new endeavors and accomplishing even greater milestones in the future. Together, we strive to create a better world, one project at a time. Chronicle Edition 3 15 Writer Rtr. Janooshikaa Kanapathy

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE Avenue

The globalized and interconnected world we reside in demands a spirit of understanding and collaboration that transcends geographical boundaries. In this context, the International Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya has played a vital role in fostering mutual understanding and respect for each other’s cultures along with building Rotaract companionship towards achieving common goals during the third quarter of the Rotary International year 2023-24. Through a series of impactful initiatives, IS Avenue has facilitated meaningful connections, broadened the horizons of its members, and actively pursued projects that contribute towards a more sustainable and developed world. The IS Avenue began the quarter with a virtual event titled "AmiSphere" on February 1st, 2024. Partnering with the Rotaract Club of Coimbatore Spectrum, this event solidified the avenue's commitment to building bridges across borders. "AmiSphere," translating to a virtual "sphere of friendship," fostered connections between Rotaractors from Sri Lanka and India. The evening commenced with welcoming remarks and an introduction to the program. Fun and engaging activities, including a guessing game, created a cheerful atmosphere and encouraged interaction. A charming performance by a talented Rotaract member from the Rotaract Club of Coimbatore Spectrum added a delightful touch, further fostering solidarity. By the end of the event, "AmiSphere" had achieved its core objective; creating a space for Rotaractors from both countries to find meaning in shared experiences and forge lasting friendships. Despite geographical limitations, the event fostered a powerful sense of unity and peace between the two clubs. Following the success of "AmiSphere," the Avenue organized another virtual event, "Anatolian Serendipity," on February 18th, 2024. This event marked a delightful departure from the usual South Asian focus of IS Avenue initiatives. Partnering with the Rotaract Club of İzmir Ekonomi in Turkey, "Anatolian Serendipity" celebrated the rich tapestry of Turkish culture and history. The Google Meet platform served as the bridge, effortlessly surpassing geographical barriers. Chronicle Edition 3 18 This project aligns with achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, bringing together Rotaract clubs from different districts to work on SDGbased initiatives. Project Dhaara 2.0 not only contributes to a more sustainable world but also fosters a network of youth leaders passionate about global development. Moreover, the IS Avenue is actively engaged in two ongoing projects that represent the spirit of international collaboration towards providing a service to an international community. The first, titled "Project Dhaara 2.0," is a collaborative effort with the Rotaract Club of PDEU in India. The initiatives of the International Service Avenue during the third quarter served as a demonstration of the unwavering commitment of the avenue to promoting international understanding, fostering Rotaract connections, and contributing to a more sustainable future. Through successful cultural exchange events, ongoing projects aligned with the SDGs, and the strengthening of existing partnerships, the IS Avenue has created a platform for meaningful collaboration and positive global impact. As the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya moves forward, the IS Avenue undoubtedly holds the potential to create even more impactful and enriching experiences for its members and the wider Rotaract community. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Avenue

Chronicle Edition 3 2\0 Additionally, we've received invaluable support from the Department of Statistics and Computer Science at the University of Kelaniya. They've provided us with a document containing sample sizes derived from quantitative data collected from undergraduates across all Sri Lankan universities, categorized by faculties. This data will serve as a foundation for our upcoming research in selecting the deserved individuals. The third quarter of the Professional Development was all about building partnerships for the Project Abhiman. We narrowed down our award ceremony to the Social Media industry. With the trend and influence of social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram, it has become increasingly important to acknowledge and celebrate the individuals and organizations making significant contributions to this industry. By focusing on these platforms, we aim to highlight the innovative content creators and influencers who are shaping trends, conversations, and connecting with people. By curating 20 main titles, we ensure that a diverse range of achievements and contributions are acknowledged, from viral content to innovative creators. This inclusive approach reflects the multifaceted nature of the social media landscape and ensures that individuals and entities from various backgrounds and disciplines have the opportunity to be recognized and celebrated. Ultimately, this award ceremony serves as a platform to showcase the incredible talent and innovation within the social media industry while also inspiring future generations to pursue their passions and make their mark in this ever-evolving digital world. We collaborated with the Department of Mass Communication of the University of Kelaniya. Their guidance and support in selecting nominees for each award category, alongside their expert panel, have ensured a fair and comprehensive selection process. To further fuel our project, we've organized bookmark and murukku stalls in public spaces, fundraising to support our initiatives. As we look ahead, we're excitedly planning for the award ceremony, for the fourth quarter of the year. With each step forward, we’re energized with the passion for the social media industry and our commitment to recognizing and celebrating excellence within it.

PUBLIC RELATIONS Avenue

Chronicle Edition 3 39 During the third quarter of our Rotaract Club, we saw a growth and unity surge that took us to new heights. We broke with traditional tactics and adopted a dynamic strategy that was focused on amplification and collaboration, creating an environment of empowerment and support. One measure of our accomplishment is the sharp increase in our YouTube channel subscribers, which has reached an impressive 2000. This accomplishment shows the growing reach of our message among wider audiences in addition to our growing digital footprint. We are constantly building a platform for the exchange of concepts, ideas, and inspiration through the creation of interesting material and targeted outreach. As the Public Relations Avenue, we were alive with action as Rotatomorrow materials stoked excitement and eagerness among our members. Working in unison with RotaTomorrow teams and other avenues, we made initiatives more widely available, which in turn stimulated outside funding and support. Our group's efforts had an unforeseen impact that extended beyond borders, creating deep bonds and gathering resources for significant change. Our avenue members' invincible passion, which selflessly dedicates their time and energy to attaining our collective vision, is the driving force behind our accomplishments.
