Laila Pakalniņa je rođena 1962. godine u Letoniji. 1986. godine je FESTIVALI/FESTIVALS
diplonirala televizijsko novinarstvo na Univerzitetu u Moskvi, a 1991. 2020 Visions Du Réel International
filmsku režiju u Moskovskoj školi filma (VGIK). Njen kratkometražni Documentary Film Festival
film The Ferry nagrađen je FIPRESCI nagradom u Kanu, kao najbolji
kratkometražni film.

Laila Pakalniņa was born in 1962, in Latvia. In 1986, she graduated from
the Moscow University, Department of TV Journalism, and in 1991 from
the Moscow Film Institute (VGIK), Department of Film Direction. She
won the FIPRESCI prize in Cannes for the best short film with The
Ferry.

up studies at the Faculty of Economics. In 1996 he attended one

and began studies of film and television directing at the Ljubljana
Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television. Since 2002, when
he graduated from the Film Academy in Ljubljana, Marko Naberšnik
has been working as an assistant professor at the Academy, and as a
director of films, documentary films and various TV shows.

MLADI DUH EVROPE uključujući nagradu
UNDERGROUND SPIRIT OF EUROPE

Kao i prošle godine, Mladi duh Evrope sastavljen je od četiri programske celine kratkih filmova po mom
izboru uz uvažavanje mišljenja kolega sa Palićkog festivala ali i u saradnji sa prijateljima sa poljskog festivala
ZubrOFFka i naravno laureatom Underground Spirit nagrade italijanskom rediteljkom Sarom Fgaier. Mladi
duh je čarobno istraživanje veoma ambicioznih filmskih radova, koji se kreću u okviru ali i izvan etabliranih
margina umetničkog delovanja, što podrazumeva umetnički film, muzički video, animaciju kao i najnovije
filmove dokumentarnog i igranog formata.
Rad Sare Fgaier je je sjajan primer nadmoćnog talenta i kreativnosti angažovane u profesiji montaže, koja
je često podcenjena na tlu medija gde dominiraju reditelji, glumci scenaristi, snimatelji. Dobitnica Evropske
filmske nagrade za kratki film GODINE, Sara Fgaier je čuvena po brilijantnoj upotrebi arhivskog materijala, koji
se u njenim rukama transformiše u magično putovanje kroz vreme. Kratki filmovi u Mladom duhu Evrope ne
mogu se lako svrstati po sadržaju ili temi, ali su im zajednički preciznost i ekonomičnost što znači da niti jedan
frejm nije protraćen.

Like last year, Young Spirit of Europe comprises four “regular” programmes of eclectic shorts chosen by myself Film
in consultation with EFF colleagues, alongside a “carte blanche” collaboration with an outstanding film-festival
-- this time selected by our friends at “ZubrOFFka” of Białystok, Poland -- and of course the tribute-section to our Festival
Underground Spirit of Europe honoree, namely the acclaimed Italian editor and director Sara Fgaier. Young Spirit is Palić
a thrilling survey of the most ambitious cinematic work, operating on and beyond the established “margins” of the 2020.
art-form, which encompasses artists’ film, music-video and animation as well as fresh takes on the documentary
and fiction formats.
Sara Fgaier’s work is a great example of a superbly talented creative presence operating in a profession - editing -
which too often gets overlooked in a media landscape which is so dominated by actors and directors, followed by
screenplay writers and cinematographers. Winner of the European Film Award for her short film GLI ANNI, Sara
Fgaier is renowned for her brilliant manipulation of archival materials, which in her hands transform the medium
into a magical form of time-travel. The short films showcased in Young Spirit of Europe can’t be easily classified
together in terms of content or theme, but do have in common a concision and economy which means that not a
single frame is wasted.

In A RADICAL FILM, Canapa experimented with thin slices of black radish
on unexposed film, a reference to film’s roots. FURTHER RADICAL is the
same material taken to its logical extreme on an optical printer. A veritable
explosion of light goes right through the dark photochemical emulsion.

Suprotno tome THORAX podgreva adolescentsku iracionalnost i
znatiželju, kao kinematska crvotočina koja vodi iza slika, gde je tromo
ljudsko oko predmet igre zaslepljujuće svetlosti.

Children are told not to look into the sun, to prevent their childish visual
urge to discover from being limited by damaged eyesight. In contrast,
THORAX fuels adolescent irrationality and curiosity, as a cinematic
wormhole leading behind the images, where the sluggish human eye is
subject to a play of dazzling light.

takođe oslikava borbu pojedinca sa kolektivnom hipnozom i njenim
uticajem kako napojedince tako i na gomilu.

THE RAIN is a simple animated film on collective consciousness. It talks
about how no accountability for our actions pushes us to thoughtlessly
follow the crowd, which may lead to a tragedy. The film also depicts a
struggle of an individual with collective hypnosis and its impact on both
the individual and the crowd.

VUKOVI ODOZGO je meditacija na temu čopora vukova snimljenih
iz vazduha. Ove divlje životinje naseljavaju tiha prostranstva gde se
zvukovi igre, režanja, njuškanja i lizanja čuju čudnovato blizu. U filmu
se dešava mnogo interakcije. Evidentno je da vukovi komuniciraju, ali
mi kao posmatrači nismo sigurni šta se zapravo dešava.

WOLVES FROM ABOVE is a meditation on a pack of wolves filmed from
the air. The elusive animals inhabit a tranquil space where sounds of playful
growling, sniffing, and licking feel oddly nearby. Many interactions take
place in the video – it is evident that the wolves are communicating, but
we as human viewers are not sure what is happening.

Fedor is a young locksmith in Murmansk, a frozen city in the obscurity
of the Russian Arctic. Client after client, he roams through the alleys of
concrete animated by a fantasy that isolates him from the city and its
population. His dreams corrode his relation to reality and open the door to
a phantasmagoric universe; a second sun is rising above the Russian Arctic.

da uvek ostaje izvan njegovog domašaja. Osvrće se prema nama, dok
za njim ulazimo u njegov polako raspadajući univerzum, vođen željom
za nečim u sebi što možda nikada nije postojalo.

Wandering through fields and forests in a desolate landscape, a solitary
boy heads further towards the unknown at every step. Observant and
patient at times, bored and restless at others, he searches for something
that seems to remain out of his reach. He looks back at us as we follow him
into his slowly disintegrating universe, driven by a desire for something in
ourselves that perhaps never existed.

Festival, koji je evoluirao od malog intimnog događaja do najvećeg filmskog događaja u severoistočnoj Poljskoj, je
otvoren i bez granica, poštuje različitosti, i predstavlja mesto susreta stvaralaca otvorenog duha, sa smislom za humor
kao i onih koji cene prirodu i njene tvorevine.

Važan deo festivala su takmičenja – filmovi se prikazuju i ocenjuju u osam kategorija. The Eastward Window i Whole
Wide World su takmičarski programi koji predstavljaju najzanimljivije kratke filmove snimljene van Poljske, dok su
Feature.pl, Animation.pl i Documentary.pl programi filmova režiranih od strane poljskih reditelja. Ostale tri selekcije su

ŻUBROFFKA International Short Film Festival for several years has been building a cultural bridge between East and West,
North and South, thanks to which creative energy from all over the world meets in Bialystok and Podlachia. Festival

The festival, which has evolved from a small intimate event to the largest film event in north-eastern Poland, is open and 2020.
borderless, respects diversity, is a meeting place for open creators, with a sense of humor and those who value nature and its
creations.

An important part of the festival are competitions – films are presented and evaluated in eight categories. The Eastward
Window and Whole Wide World competitions present the most interesting short films made outside of Poland, while the
Feature.pl, Animation.pl and Documentary.pl competitions are directed to Polish filmmakers. The other three competitions
have an open formula for both national and foreign filmmakers, and are as follows: On the Edge – competition for the best
experimental film and video art, Music Video – competition for the best music video, and Kids – competition for the best film
for children.

2020. Sara je prva italijanka koja je primila Rolex Arts nagradu 2012. Režirala je mnoštvo filmova od kojih je poslednji kratki
film GLIANNI (Venecijanski međunarodni filmski festival 2018, Horizonti), dobitnica je i Evropske filmske nagrade za
Najbolji evropski kratki film 2018 kao i Srebrnu lentu za Najbolji dokumentarni kratki film. 2013 režirala je kratki film
DOLAZAK, potom film srednjeg metra ARTURO (2014) i film SKROMNA ITALIJA prikazan u Veneciji 2014-te u programu
Dani reditelja. Autorka je videa za predstavu PRIČA O PRIJATELJSTVU od Fanny & Alexander.
Zajedno sa Pjetrom Marčelom, sa kojim sarađuje preko deset godina, osnovala je nezavisnu filmsku produkcijsku
kuću Avventurosa. 2015 je montirala i producirala film IZGUBLJENA I LEPA, prikazan u takmičarskom program Lokarno
filmskog festival, koji joj je doneo nagradu za Najbolju montađu na Spelo filmskom festivalu. Montirala je i film TIŠINA
PELŠAJNA (Venecijanski filmski festival - Horizonti, 2011), zatim bila prvi asistent režije, istraživač arhivske građe i
montažer filma USTA VUKA iz 2009-te, koji je pobedio na Torinskom filmskom festival, a nagrade osvajao u Berlinu
i mnogim drugim festivalima. Takođe bila je prvi asistent režije i montaže filma PRELAŽENJE CRTE iz (Venecijanski
filmski festival - Horizonti, 2007).
Montirala je VOZ ZA MOSKVU (2013) reditelja Frederika Feronea i Mikela Mancolinija, film koji je 2013-te prikazan u
glavnom takmičarskom programu na Torinskom festivalu 2013-te a Sari Fgaier doneo nagradu za Najbolju montažu
na Međunarodnom filmskom festivalu u Riju de Žaneiru. Sarađivala je i sa Đanfrankom Rosijem na filmu SVETI GRA iz
2013-te koji osvaja Zlatnog lava na 70-om Venecijanskom filmskom festivalu. Odgovorna je i za arhivska istraživanja u
Italiji i Engleskoj za novi film Aleksandra Sokurova SMEH KROZ SUZE potpuno sačinjenog od arhivske građe.
Pored navedenih filmskih radnika sarađivala je još i sa Mauriciom Braučijem, Alinom Maraci i Frankom Mareskom.

Sara was the first Italian to receive the Rolex Arts Prize for Film in 2012 and she worked under the mentorship of Walter Murch
in New York for one year.
She directed the short-film GLIANNI (THE YEARS, 2018, Venice International Film Festival-Orizzonti), winner of the European
Film Award (Efa) as Best European Short Film of 2018 and
The Silver Ribbon as Best Documentary Short Film. She also directed the short-film L’APPRODO (THE ARRIVAL, 2013), the
medium-length film ARTURO (2014) and L’UMILE ITALIA (HUMBLE ITALY, 2014 Venice International Film Festival - Giornate
degli Autori) together with Pietro Marcello within the anthology film 9 x10, produced by Istituto Luce. She is the author of the
videos for the play STORIA DI UN’AMICIZIA (HISTORY OF A FRIENDSHIP, 2018) by Fanny & Alexander.
She started Avventurosa, an independent film production company, with Pietro Marcello ,with whom she has worked
for over 10 years: film editor and producer of BELLA E PERDUTA (LOST AND BEAUTIFUL, 2015) presented at the official
competition at the Locarno Film Festival, which won her the Prize for Best Editing at the Spello Film Festival; film editor
for IL SILENZIO DI PELEŠJAN (THE SILENCE OF PELEŠJAN,2011, Venice International Film Festival - Orizzonti); first assistant
director, researcher for archival footage and film editor for LA BOCCA DEL LUPO (THE MOUTH OF THE WOLF, 2009), winner
of the Torino Film Festival, The Berlin Film Festival and many other international prizes; first assistant Director and assistant
editor for IL PASSAGGIO DELLA LINEA (CROSSING THE LINE, 2007 Venice International Film Festival -Orizzonti).
She curated the editing of ILTRENOVA A MOSCA (THE TRAIN TO MOSCOW, 2013) directed by Federico Ferrone and Michele
Manzolini (2013 Torino Film Festival, official competition), wich won her the prize for Best Editing at the International Archival
Film Festival in Rio de Janeiro. She also collaborated on Gianfranco Rosi’s SACRO GRA’S (HOLY GRA,2013) editing, Golden
Lion at the 70th Venice Film Festival.
She is responsible for the archival research, for Italy and England for director Aleksander Sokurov’s new film LAUGHTER
THROUGH TEARS, entirely composed of archival material.
She has also collaborated among others, with Maurizio Braucci, Alina Marazzi and Franco Maresco.

Zajedno su režirali film MERICA 2007. godine, nakon čega su niz godina radili kao reditelji i producenti u Al-Jazeera-i. U saradnji sa Frančeskom
Ragacijem i Magdalenom Szymkow, 2010. su osnovali produkcijsku kuću Vezifilm, gde su producirali film ANITA (zvanična selekcija festivala u
Torinu, Doclisboa) i THE TRAIN TO MOSCOW.
Together they co-directed the documentary flm MERICA in 2007. In the following years they worked as directors and producers for the Al-
Jazeera network. Together with Francesco Ragazzi and Magdalena Szymkow they created the production company Vezflm in 2010 with which
they produced ANITA (offcial selection Torino Film Festival, Doclisboa) and THE TRAIN TO MOSCOW.
