i Sustainable, Environment, Exploration and Design Showcase (SEED SHOWCASE) is an annual project exhibition of Industrial Design students (IND) from the Faculty of Design and Architecture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The purpose of the exhibition is to promote students' designs and young designers to public and private organizations, thereby exposing the role of the field of Industrial Design to the public. Before being known as SEED SHOWCASE, the year-end exhibition of IND students previously was known as Degree Show. Lately, in 2015, it has been converted to SEED Showcase. SEED Showcase has its own identity as a light bulb represents the idea and small seed leaves symbolize young designers in the logo. SEED Showcase is fully run by the final year students as a member of the committee, with guidance and advice from lecturers. These products with marketing potential will lead to collaboration with the industries in producing products to meet market demand. The exhibited projects have the potential for commercialization. This will lead to the potential collaboration with the industries, while at the same time promoting the young talents in the field of Industrial Design. SEED SHOWCASE HISTORY
WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL SEED SHOWCASE 2023? International SEED Showcase is an annual Degree Show by the Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Design and Architecture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The showcase exhibits the outcome of 39 Final Year Projects (FYPs) from the Bachelor of Industrial Design UPM, through a synergic collaboration with 17 companies. International SEED Showcase features three international universities - Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University (SSRU) from Thailand, Telkom University, from Indonesia and Tatung University, from Taiwan as part of the exhibitors. This year’s SEED Showcase is themed "Enhancing Hyper Customization through Circular Design”, which commences significant step forward in our commitment to sustainable practices and the pursuit of a better, more environmentally conscious future. ‘Hyper customization’ refers to the practice of leveraging advanced technologies through data analytics, automation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to create highly personalized products and experiences for individual customers, while maintaining the efficiency and scalability of mass production processes. This includes the use of "Industry 5.0" with the emergence of human-robot collaboration or "cobots". ‘Circular Design’ is the holistic approach to design that considers the entire life cycle of a product or system, from its creation to its disposal. It is based on the principles of the circular economy, which seeks to minimize waste and maximize the use of resources by keeping materials and products in use for as long as possible. The chosen theme challenges the students to solve the current issues related to the circularity and sustainability through industrial design solutions, as a requirement to fulfil their FYPs. It ultimately challenges them to find ways to combine the best of both worlds: personalization and sustainability. The event is open to the public from 4th of July until 6th July 2023, in support of WIDD2023 Satellite Events by PEREKA MALAYSIA.

1 The Final Year students from the Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Design and Architecture, UPM are in charge of organising the International SEED Showcase 2023 under the guidance of the lecturers. The showcase features the outcomes of 39 Final Year Projects (FYPs) - the results of the university-industry collaborations with 17 companies, which majority of them are startups from UPM's InnoHub programme. Three international universities are also featured in this event as exhibitors: Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University (SSRU) from Thailand, Telkom University from Indonesia, and Tatung University from Taiwan. This year’s FYPs is themed "Enhancing Hyper Customization through Circular Design”, in support of our commitment to sustainable practices and the pursuit of a better, more environmentally conscious future. In conjunction with the showcase, which aims to present innovative projects and cutting-edge concepts that adhere to Circular Design principles. Besides, by placing consumer at the centre of the design process, we can achieve unprecedented levels of personalisation without compromising our environment’s well-being. The ultimate challenge presented by this theme is how to successfully blend customization and sustainability. It is an opportunity for us to challenge conventional norms and explore innovative solutions that blend creativity, technology, and environmental responsibility. Thank you all for your hard work in successfully organising the International SEED Showcase 2023, and especially to the committee for their great efforts. COURSE COORDINATORS FOREWORD
It is an interesting approach to explore on this year’s FYP and International SEED Showcase theme, although some may disapprove. The chosen theme provides rooms for ideas that can be explored and extended towards many fields of applications in solving issues created by environmental issues. The proposed designs and artefacts from the students’ FYP imply that the solutions do not only address the main issues related to circular economy, but also the inclusive exploration on everyday needs. This has proven that the students worked hard to successfully create the sustainable solutions that can be applied with circular design. We must understand that these graduates are not the people we train to suit the market, but they are the ones who will create the market needs. The exploration of this topic is not only relevant to the current environment, but it has the potential to create a new market for a new audience. It's been a meaningful experience having this cohort to be supervised. I hope that they will be the engine that shapes the new landscape of design in Malaysia. TS. DR. SAIFUL HASLEY RAMLI PhD (Co-Design), Sheffield Hallam University, UK 3
International SEED Showcase 2023 exhibits 39 design projects from the Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) UPM, an outcome of collaboration with 17 sustainable and green technology-based companies, where most of are the startups from UPM’s InnoHub programme. The chosen theme for both FYPs and the showcase is “Hyper Customization Through Circular Design”. The theme supports the sustainable practices and the pursuit of a better, more environmentally conscious future, while highlighting the concept Circular Design. Both personalization and sustainability aspects are best to be combined to ultimately achieve the theme. We are delighted that this event is conducted in a hybrid mode – both physically and virtually again this year. In addition, it was a huge challenge for the International SEED Showcase 2023 committee to execute this showcase, alongside the completion of their FYPs. However, each one of the committee members has put tremendous effort and shown the great determination, passion, and team spirit in successfully completing both demanding tasks. As the Coordinator of International SEED Showcase 2023, I couldn’t be prouder to witness their achievements, despite all the challenges they had to go through. For that, I would like to applaud the committee for the great works. Now it’s time for you to face the real working world and all the best for your future endeavours. TS. DR. ROSALAM CHE ME PhD, Design (Industrial/Engineering Design), Politecnico di Milano, Italy 4
