for the readers to understand as much as possible. He also wants the readers to save the time in
reading the new. He, thus, tries to summarize the main points of the news, so the readers will
know at a glance what the new in about.
1.2 Parts of a new article
The news article consists of these parts:
1.2.1 The topic
The topic is always written at the top of the news article. It is the subject of the
news written in one word phrase. There are many topics as there are life experiences. The topic
is what the news is about, such as, environment, drugs or drug suppression etc.
1.2.2 The headline
The headline is the most important part of the news story. It is printed in large
letters to attract the reader’s attention. The size of the letters determines how important the news
is. The most important story had the largest headline, and the least important has the smallest
headlines.
The news write summarize the main point(s) of the news in the headline, in order
to make the new easy understand and save the readers time in reading the news.
1.2.3 The sub-heading
The sub-heading’s purpose is to give a little more information that the writer thinks
is important to a clearer understanding of the headline.
1.2.4 The writer of the news
The writer’s name is usually written below the headline or the sub-heading. In
some news article writers of the news are not mentioned, and in other the writers are mentioned
in groups or team.
1.2.5 The origin of the news or the place where the news happened
The origin of the news is usually the name of the city or town or country in which
the new occurred. Sometimes it is followed by the agency’s name which distributes the news. In
4
Business English PSRUlocal new where the place the new occurred is the same place where the newspaper is printed, the
name of the place of origin of the news is not mentioned.
1.2.6. The lead
The lead is the first paragraph of the news article. It is usually a one sentence
summary of the news articles. It gives more information than the headlines.
The lead answers these questions:
Who did what to whom, when, where, why, and how?
Or, What happened to whom, when, where, why, and how
1.2.7 The body
The body of the news article is the rest of the paragraphs of the news. It contains
facts and details and statements of people in the news. Sometimes there is a conclusion the
paragraphs at the end of the article.

Lee warns media on dangers of ‘Singlish’
Singapore, AP : A former prime minister of Singapore say the country’s own brand of English, which
is know there as “Singlish” prevents less educated citizens from bettering themselves and should
not be popularized (What is “Singlish” like?)
Singlish incorporates elements from the three main population bases, namely Chinese,
Malay and Tamil, and often drops English prepositions and pronouns.
Lee Kuan Yew, who was prime minister from 1959-1999 and who remains Singapore’s
highest paid public official, said in comments published on Sunday that the more the media spreads
the mishmash of English and Asian languages, the more the disadvantaged Singapore’s
uneducated would become.
“Unfortunately, if the less-educated half of our people end up learning to speak only
Singlish, they will suffer economically and socially,” Mr. Lee was quoted as saying in The Straits
Times. He was speaking at a National Da dinner on Saturday. “we will see a difference in one
generation,” he said.
Mr.Lee said the name approach his government took to standardize the Mandarin
language, which is spoken by most ethnic Chinese in Singapore, should be taken with English.
“Twenty-five years ago, we decided that we would not speak special Singapore Mandarin,”
he said.
“Because we used standard Mandarin on television, radio and with teachers in schools, we
now have a generation of young Singapore able to speak more of a standard Mandarin. The
Chinese-speaking world outside Singapore can understand us.”
The influential former premier appeal to the media only to use Singlish for humour , in a way
that make people want to use standard English.

Food exporters anxious to have samples tested
Requests indicative of growing concern
Ploenpoch Attakor
The National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Biotec) has
been asked by exporters to check more than 200 food samples and certify they
contain no genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) since it opened one month ago.
Biotec director Sowong Tragoonrung said the high number of requests
indicated a growing concern among businesses about genetic modification.
“Most of the samples come from food exporters who are required by their
foreign customers to produce evidence that their products are GMO-free. We did not
expect the number would be high because each sample represented a shipment.”
Soybean and corn topped the samplings.
There are requests for rice and fruit testing. In fact, I don’t that is necessary.
There is also an increasing demand for testing. Seasoning sauces,” he said.
Debate over the introduction of GMOs has become heated, with academics and
environmentalists expressing concern their possible effects on human health and the
ecology.
It was reported that a shipment containing soybean supplied by DoiKham,a
royal project company, was rejected by the German importer.
Mr. Somwong said Biotec was not yet qualified to issue certificates.
“We simply produce laboratory results. We will be able to give certification only when we
can examine the production process, which mean we have to know exactly whether the
tested samples are really used in production, and we’ll do this on a random basis.”

Business English PSRUGiving Information on Interesting Places
PHITSANULOK
Phitsanulok, a town of the excellent Phar Buddha Chinnaraj,
the birthplace of King Naresuan the Great, raft community, delicious dried
banana as well as fantastic caves and waterfall
Covering some 105,815 square kilometers, Phitsanulok is 377 kilometers north of
Bangkok. It borders Uttaradit Province on the North, Phichit Province on the South, Loei and
Phetchabun Provinces on the East, and Kamphaeng Phet and Sukhothai Provinces on the West.
Situated on a strategic location dividing Thailands Central and Northern regions, and connecting
to the Northeastern region, Phitsanulok is undeniably an important hub and an ideal base for
travelers wishing to explore the lower North and western Northeast. Phitsanulok, however, is not
just a stopover for tourists, but is a province with promising tourism opportunities.
Phitsanulok City spans the banks of Maenam Nan and has Maenam Kwae Noi running
through it. Therefore, it is locally known and historically referred to as Song Kwae City (song
means two and kwae means a river). Most of Phitsanulok's terrain is flatlands, with one third of
the area being mountain ranges on the north and the east. Its unique natural endowments
including natural parks and waterfalls make a trip to Phitsanulok worthwhile.
Apart from its exceptional natural charisma, Phitsanulok provides visitors with an
opportunity to explore notable chapters of Thailand's history. For example, remains of an ancient
community dating back between 2,000-4,000 years, including old stone axes, was found here. In
addition, the old temple of Wat Chula Mani, situated 5 kilometers south of the city, was built
even before the Sukhothai Kingdom burst into power.
Phitsanulok is also the birthplace of King Naresuan the Great (reigned 1590-1605) the
legendary King who declared Ayutthayas independence from Burma in 1584. King Naresuan the
Great is known for his victorious and honorable single hand combat on elephant back Yutthahatti
against a Burmese Crown Prince. His heroic power and strong dedication to expelling the
invaders from his motherland saved the country, and truly united the Kingdom which later was
known as Siam and currently known as Thailand.
