Golden Jubilee Raising Day Gp Photo 2015

50 It was a sheer coincidence that the Regt got
The Golden Milestone 74 inducted in HAA after five decades in the 50th yr
of its raising; that too in the same sector where the
Regt had been raised. Thus, after a tremendously
satisfying and a rewarding tenure in Bhatinda, the
Regt moved to the new loc in HAA. Another historic
and unique coincidence of this move was the fact
that the GOC of the fmn was one of our own hard
core ‘267er’ none other but Maj Gen Manoj Pande,
VSM, AVSM. Imdt after indn and mandatory accln,
the Regt got into action with rigorous PIT for almost
a month. On culmination of PIT, the GOC vis the
Regt which was a proud and an iconic event for
the Regt and a ‘homecoming’ for Gen Pande. The
Regt was also privileged by the visit of Lt Gen M
M S Rai, AVSM, VSM, Col Comdt, The Bombay
Sappers. The Regt also had the privilege of hosting
numerous dignitaries to incl Lt Gen Sanjiv Talwar,
AVSM, E-in-C, Maj Gen P P Malhotra, VSM, CE NC
the GsOC of the fmn - Maj Gen Gopal Gurung, SM,
AVSM, Maj Gen C P Cariappa, SM, VSM and CEs
- Brig A K Ramesh and Brig Sunil B Moharil. The
Regt did tremendous amt of op tasks which were
applauded by one and all for its quality and timely
exec. The range of tasks extended from 1274 Kms
snow clearance, 70 Kms of op tr constr and 316
Kms of op tr improvement, 40 Kms of AT Tr constr,
exec of over 500 op wks assets including fd defs,
demining to include detection and in situ destr of
276 mines and 106 Unexploded ordnance of Op
VIJAY Vintage, route sanitisation of over 1100
Kms, close sp tasks to the fmn including extensive
sp during Kargil Vijay Diwas. In the field of trg and
sports also, the Regt achieved a lot in terms of
excellence during courses and sports events. The
offrs of the Regt led from the front with three offrs
having cleared Staff College / M Tech entrance, six
offrs having excelled in JC / ECC Course, three
youngsters having excelled in YOs course and one
offr excelling in EOCEI Course. Capt Rohit Uniyal
was selected as Pl Cdr in RMPL dply in Bhutan.

The Regt secured second posn in Inter Regt
Volleyball in 2016, Spr Sachin Patil of the Regt
secured Gold Medal in Northern Comd Wrestling
Championship and Nk (L) Jitender Singh secured
Gold medal in World Chess Boxing Championship.
In a short span of over a year, the Regt has created
a niche for itself in the fmn.
The Regt celebrated its actual Golden Jubilee on
01 Dec 2016 – albeit under fd conditions wherein
we had the honour of hosting one of our dare devil
veteran Col S K Bhatia who graced the occasion
and presented a prized memento in form of
periscope of a Paki Sherman Tank which he had
destroyed during the 1965 ops. During this tenure
till dt the Regt has been awarded with two COAS

Spr (OEM) Tukaram Vasantrao Jadhav, SC

During the snow season in 1985, Spr/OEM Jadhav Tukaram Vasantrao was deployed for snow clearance operation
on Srinagar-Leh road at KM 147 in Zozila Sector. Working in this sector involves the use of most sophisticated machines
under hazardous weather conditions in temperatures ranging from -20°C to -40°C.

On 23 March 1985 during snow clearance between Mushkoh 1 Glacier and Gumri, operator Vasantrao alongwith
Capt Rastogi, who was sitting in co-driver’s seat, got completely buried under a free rolling avalanche. Undaunted by the
condition he was in, he extricated himself from the machine buried under the snow alongwith Capt Rastogi. Though tired
and exhausted Spr Vasantrao without wasting any time started retrieving the most valuable and expensive machine. He
not only did this against all odds but after having done so, he immediately started the snow clearance in utter disregard
of his personal safety. On the 29th March, 1985, in a similar operation at KM 119 Spr Vasantrao with his superb and
adroit handling and operation of the Schmidt machine, cleared a 18 meter high and 210 meter long slide by continuously
working for 22 hours. Again on the 09th Apr 1985 during snow clearance at KM 103 he alongwith his team mates, were
hit by an avalanche. The team and the machine were partially buried under the snow. Undaunted and undeterred, Spr
Vasantrao without losing his nerves extricated himself, his colleagues and the machine to safety and brought one his
team mates Shakal Dev, who had collapsed under stress and strain on his shoulders to the camp reaching there at 0200
hrs. Spr (OEM) Jadhav Tukaram Vasantrao thus displayed exceptional courage and devotion to duty of a high order.

The Golden Milestone 86

Lt Col R K Sharma, YSM

Lt Col R K Sharma after assuming command of an ’Inland Water Transport Operating Company’ was inducted into
‘Operation Pawan’ in Sri Lanka on 20 Aug 1988. The officer took personal control of a detachment at Trincomalee which
consisted of one barage, two landing crafts mechanised and two ten men boats. The Inland water transport craft are not
designed for operating in open sea owing to their basic fat bottom structure, lack of chemical treatment required for steel
hull, navigational aids, safety equipment and communication systems. It was with a deep sense of dedication to duty
that the offr ensured that the craft, inspite of the basic constraints, operated across open sea and constantly used for
the maintenance of the Infantry Brigade, thus saving a great amount of troops effort. At times water would seep through
the bottom of the craft while in open sea, he personally supervised the successful plugging of leaks while on high sea.
On a return voyage from Muttur to Trincomalee a landing craft mechanised lost its rudder. He manoeuvred the craft to
safety, using very high order of organisational and technical skills. He retrieved the rudder from the sea bed with the help
of naval divers and then went on to repair the craft in Trincomalle itself, a task which would have required dry docking
of the craft in a port having proper repair facilities. He ensured that all the crafts were always serviceable despite their
deteriorated condition. He completed the herculean task of shifting five crafts to Madras and their overhaul in a record
time of 30 days which would have taken three to six months normally. For his exceptional devotion and dedication to
duty during Operations, IC-28639 Lt Col RK Sharma was awarded with YSM on Republic Day in 1991.

Brig (Then Capt) R K Sharma, SM

On 25 Jul 89 a column comprising of (1, 1, 21) moved out of BEG and Centre, Kirkee and was deployed at Shivaji-
bridge (Kolhapur city) for evacuating the people who were marooned in the flooded area and had taken shelters on the
trees. IC-47938Y Capt Raj Kumar Sharma, OIC of the column, without bothering about his own safety got into the BAUT
along with three more sappers and manouvred deftly to a tree on which five persons were precariously hanging. The
current being high, he could not move the BAUT till the trees, but to save the marooned persons, he jumped into the
flood water and reached the tree with a rope tied to his waist. He brought, one by one, all the five individuals, in his own
hands and swam to the BAUT which was kept close. During all this time he operated with utter disregard to his personal
safety and health and displayed exemplary bravery and courage in saving fifteen precious lives. He also organized the
regular flow of dry food materials, cooked food, kerosene oil and medicines alongwith doctors to the marooned villages
of Kolhapur district for a period of five days. The works done by him and his team had been highly appreciated by
Collector and District Magistrate of Kolhapur, and all the local leaders of marooned villages and Kolhapur City, alongwith
the local pers. For his courage, bravery and high sense of selfless duty, he was awarded ‘Sena Medal’.

and fearless leadership, he was able to save 300 crores worth of equipment, and by his engineering feat he enabled
the take off of 10 MIG 27 aircraft from the airfeld. For his dedicated and distinguished service of a high order, he was
awarded the ‘Sena Medal’.

He suddenly heard a noise and saw huge boulders sliding down the hill side. With utter disregard to his personal safety,
he warned his co-workers and other casual labourers to move away from the site. Although the landslide was severe but
Spr Budhu Khan displayed extremely high degree of camaraderie, esprit-de-corps and ensured that he saved the life of
all personnel deployed at the work site. As the landslide continued, Spr Budhu Khan now attempted to save his Dozer
(the Govt. machinery worth Rs 80 lacs) which was under imminent danger of being swept away. It was then that he made
the supreme sacrifice but not before saving life of his fellow co-workers (Army and civil personnel) and the valuable eqpt
entrusted to him for duty. For exemplary display of courage under adverse situation, esprit- de-corps and placing duty
before self, Spr/OEM Budhu Khan was awarded Shaurya Chakra posthumously.

chased them while firing and shot dead one of the terrorist. For his boldness, raw courage and high degree of initiative,
Spr Harpreet Singh was awarded SENA MEDAL (GALLANTRY).
