A Chronicle Of an Experience
“OP KosiPrahar”

Maj Mahesh Varma

It was one sunny Sunday morning in Amritsar and I was enjoying my breakfast in the
Officer’s Mess when the duty clerk chipped in with an urgent log message – “Flood relief
column to marry up with Infantry Battalion immediately for move to Bihar”. We were to marry
up with an Infantry Battalion and move by air to the devastated districts of Bihar in short
notice. There was one thing different about this task. It was a kind of exacting operation with
no opening narratives nor any recce parties. We were completely unaware of the extent of the
flood, the destruction and the lives in danger. It was not a normal flood, but a catastrophe.
Our flood relief column, composed of 3 Offrs, 4 JCOs and 100 ORs, took off from Raja Sansi
Air Force Station, Amritsar on 01 Sep 2008 at 1400 hrs for Purnia Air Force Station, Bihar.
The torrential floods had washed away roads, closed public transport and isolated
people in their homes. Over 400,000 people marooned by flood waters were living on roof
tops, railway tracks and river embankments without food and drinking water.

Pedaling Through “ Raj Pun”

Capt Anuradha Singh

‘Hamesha A One’undertook a cycling expedition through the warrior land of Rajasthan
and Punjab named as “Pedaling through Raj Pun”. Commencing from Jaipur, the expedition
went through village of Devthala, Khandela, Leela Ki Dhani, Jhunjhunu, Bairasai, Dhani, Dpbhi
Darba Kalan, Talwandi, Sabro & Bathinda covering a distance of 543 Km over a pd of 11 days.
On occasion of ‘234th Corps of Engr Day’, the expedition was ‘flagged off’ by Maj Gen
Suresh Sharma, CE HQ South Western Comd at Jaipur on 19th Nov 2014. There was no
pre recce of the route carried out and it was only based on Google Map and inputs by
locals. With the team confidence, concentration & physical strength we found our way. The
team undertook all the activities that we aimed at commencing with the interaction with the
students of school and colleges and delivering motivational talks on women empowerment
and awareness about Indian Army. Finally the expedition was ‘flagged in’ by Lt Gen PM Hariz,
SM, VSM, GOC Chetak Corps on 29th Nov 14.
The journey through 11 days was not just about cycling through the route, hill patches
and taking cross country rides in the simmering heat of Rajasthan, it was a fun filled ride
which included halts for camel rides, visiting ruined forts, stopping by the field and having
lunch under a tree near a tube well and to be greeted by children. All such special moments
shared by all the team members would remain an unforgettable moment for the life time.
