emergencies to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable
people. We do so with impartiality as to nationality, race, gender, religious
beliefs, class and political opinions.
Guided by Strategy 2030 – our collective plan of action to tackle the
major humanitarian and development challenges of this decade – we are
committed to saving lives and changing minds.
Our strength lies in our volunteer network, our community-based
expertise and our independence and neutrality. We work to improve
humanitarian standards, as partners in development, and in response to
disasters. We persuade decision-makers to act at all times in the interests
of vulnerable people. The result: we enable healthy and safe
communities, reduce vulnerabilities, strengthen resilience and foster a
culture of peace around the world.

BASIC RULES DECEMBER 2021 | RESTRICTED FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY

In using the red cross, red crescent and red crystal emblems,
the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement has a responsibility
to ensure that its principal significance as an internationally
recognized symbol of protection during armed conflict is
upheld. Here are some basic rules to follow when using the
emblems (red cross or red crescent or red crystal). All points
are depicted in this guide.

1. The cross, the crescent and the crystal must always
be in plain solid red. Their shapes must not be
altered.

2. The cross, the crescent and the crystal must always
appear on a white background. No variations, not
even beige or grey shading, are allowed.

3. No lettering, design or object should be superimposed
on the white background or on the cross or crescent
or red crystal itself.

Article 44 of the First Geneva Convention (12 August 1949) DECEMBER 2021 | RESTRICTED FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
makes the distinction between the protective use and
the indicative use of the emblems and outlines the
general rules governing the two uses.
Protective use – The use of the emblem for protective
purposes is a visible manifestation of the protection
accorded by the Geneva Conventions to medical
personnel, units and transports.
Indicative use – The use of the emblem for indicative
purposes in wartime or in times of peace shows that a
person or item of property has a link with the International
Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The importance of the distinction between the protective
and indicative uses of the emblems cannot be
overestimated.
In addition to States, it is the responsibility of all members
of the Movement to protect and respect the emblems and
to guard against their misuse.

TYPOGRAPHY MALAYSIAN RED CRES
BULAN
Adrian Frutiger designed Avenir in 1988, after years of CENT
having an interest in sans serif typefaces. In an interview
with Linotype, he said he felt an obligation to design a DECEMBER 2021 | RESTRICTED FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
linear sans in the tradition of Erbar and Futura, but to also
make use of the experience and stylistic developments of
the twentieth century.

The word Avenir means “future” in French and hints that
the typeface owes some of its interpretation to Futura. But
unlike Futura, Avenir is not purely geometric; it has vertical
strokes that are thicker than the horizontals, an “o” that is
not a perfect circle, and shortened ascenders.

These nuances aid in legibility and give Avenir a
harmonious and sensible appearance for both texts and
headlines.

Avenir is the official core typeface of Malaysian Red
Crescent. It provides all the flexibility of expression
required for our visual communications.

Keep typography simple by using the minimum number of
sizes and weights necessary. Use all-caps and justified
copy sparingly.

Other fonts are permissible for co-branding purposes and
particular marketing campaigns, but Avenir should always
be used when representing Malaysian Red Crescent itself.

These typefaces should be used by all staff for all
correspondence, including emails.
