St. Katharine Drexel Chapel reflects XU mission, faith, and core values

The new St. Katharine Drexel Chapel was built using architects, artists and artwork from all over the world. Archbishop Gregory Aymond dedicated the chapel at a special Mass on Oct. 6, 2012, followed by weeklong celebrations for Xavier University and its supporters.
Cesar Pelli, world renowned architect with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, designed the new chapel. At first glance, the unique architecture draws attention to its sloping entrance ramp; sharp, limestone angles and walls; and an octagonal-shaped roof covered in copper, topped by a cross wrapped in copper.
The $10 million chapel was privately funded. Walking into the chapel, visitors will see two, parallel stone walls. Each wall engraved by London architect John Nash, who also handcrafted the name of the building at the foot of the ramp.
The wall on the right is engraved with a quote from St. Katharine Drexel: “Oh, Lord, grant that we may love you in the way you deserve to be loved.” The wall on the left contains an engraved scripture from Matthew 11:28: “Come to me all you that labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.”
Natural lighting from skylights illuminates the sanctuary. Light-colored wooden pews will seat 450 people. A wooden, detailed sculpture of the Risen Christ contains African facial features. With hands extended, the back-lighted figure appears to be suspended in air but is attached to a wall behind the stone altar.
Beautifully handcrafted windows on the sides of the main chapel represent the “Stations of the Cross,” each depicting the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Other rooms in the chapel include the Sacristy, where the Mass celebrants dress and meditate before each service. A “sacarium” is also in the Sacristy, and is a sink used to drain holy water and oils directly into the ground and not into sewer pipes. In this section, there is also a confessional space and a smaller meditation chapel that seats 28 people.
The St. Katharine Drexel Chapel is not only important to the Xavier community, but it is also significant to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Sister Monica Loughlin, who serves in the Office of Academic Success, shared some of the sisters’ thoughts about the chapel to honor their order’s founder.
What does the new chapel mean to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacament?
Sister Monica:
“The prominence of the chapel on campus reminds and invites the whole Xavier community to take time to reflect frequently on God’s unconditional love and providence. The St. Katharine Drexel chapel will be a contemplative place where each member of the faculty, staff, and student body can experience silence, listen, find their center and express praise, gratitude, and petitions to God in the manner most comfortable for each.
In particular for the SBS and others who are of the Catholic Faith, the chapel will be experienced as a place where Jesus is present in a special way. In naming the community of women religious she founded, St. Katharine said that each SBS was to adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and in the people she served, whatever her duties might be.”
Can you explain the significance of a relic from St. Katharine being installed at the base of the altar?
Sister Monica: “Most frequently relics are tiny pieces of clothing or items like a holy book used frequently by the person. Whenever possible, if a church or chapel is dedicated to a particular Saint, a relic of that Saint is placed in a safe place as part of the dedication ceremony. It is important to remember that the church or chapel is a place to worship God and while the chapel will have a relic of St. Katharine Drexel and statues of her and other holy persons; these items are used to remember them and their good works and holy lives so we may emulate them.”
Do you think students should also look at the importance of the new chapel? If so, why?
Sister Monica: Everyone in the Xavier family is at an institution recognized as Black and Catholic. We are not all Black and we are not all Catholic but our roots our Black and Catholic. This is not just a historical reality, it is our unchanged identity and it is our legacy to pass on to future generations.
All members of the Xavier family need to remember our roots, we celebrate and give thanks for St. Katharine Drexel and all those who shared in her dream and on whose shoulders we stand. Our mission and core values are symbolized in this new chapel. All of us are invited to use the chapel as a place to reflect, a place to call on God as we face challenges and tough decisions, a place to seek God’s desire for our lives—to determine how we will lead and how we will serve others. Are you too busy? Really????? Don’t forget to feed your spirit, your soul!
