St. Katharine Drexel and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., have much in common, including A DREAM!
Martin, Jr.’s preaching was powerful in rallying the people to boycott segregated buses (Birmingham); to strike for fair wages; to participate in sit-ins; and to march for justice (such as the March on Washington and Selma’s march for voter registration). His leadership abilities and commitment to peaceful demonstrations led coalitions of Black community leaders to select him as spokesperson of the Civil Rights Movement. In spite of suffering from the bombing of his home and from spending time in a Birmingham jail, he remained firmly committed to nonviolence.
For her services to the Church and to works of justice through education, in 1941 Rev. Mother Katharine Drexel was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from St. Joseph University of Philadelphia. She died in 1955 and in 2000 was given world recognition by her canonization as Saint Katharine Drexel.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize (1964), was assassinated in 1968, and in 1983 the US Congress, passed the bill which made the third Monday of every January the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday.
Both St. Katharine Drexel and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lived a legacy of love and unity among all of God’s people.
The baton to live this legacy has now been passed on to us!
